1 The P ATRIOT P RESS Patriot Oaks Academy Newsletter November 9, 2018 Principal s Post Dear Patriot Oaks Families, In my home I have a sign that reads, There is ALWAYS, AL- WAYS, ALWAYS something to be thankful for!: I truly believe this. IN THIS EDITION: Important Dates As we are in the midst of this Thanksgiving season, we are thankful to you, our wonderful POA community, for the support and care you show the teachers and staff at our school. We are so blessed to be a part of your children s lives and are grateful each day for the opportunity to team with you in raising good kids that will do amazing things in this world. Thank you for your support of our Holiday food Drive to support our sister school, Southwoods Elementary. I had the opportunity today to help deliver the truckloads of food to that school. There were tears of gratitude as they saw the generosity of our Chargers. Many of the children that attend Southwoods rely heavily on the two meals a day that the school provides for their daily nutrition. Having multiple days off for a holiday break often means that children go hungry until school resumes. Your donations will ensure that the Southwoods Eagles eat this coming weekend. Our hearts are full and we are grateful. Enjoy your holiday weekend and remember all that you are blessed with. Look for things to be thankful for! We are thankful for you. Sincerely, Mrs. Olson Good Chargers Counselor Corner 1st and 2nd Grade Winter Concerts Café News Charger Band News 8th Grade Graduation Field Trip Middle School Hoodies Media Center News District News ESE Parent Advisory Committee Meeting Vision: At Patriot Oaks Academy, we are a community that fosters character development, independence and a lifelong love of learning. 4 CHARGER BAND NEWS John Hermann to represent Patriot Oaks in FMEA All-State Honor Band. On January 9-12, 8th grade tenor saxophone player John Hermann will travel to Tampa, FL to represent Patriot Oaks Academy in the annual Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA) All-State Honor Band. John will be among 120 middle school student musicians to participate in the prestigious wind ensemble. FMEA encompasses the entire state of Florida. This festival affords the likeminded band students the opportunity to interact and perform high -level literature. The students will enjoy 3 days of intensive rehearsals culminating in a performance at the prestigious All-State concert at the FMEA Conference. This annual event is attended by thousands of music educators from all over Florida, ranging from the kindergarten to University level teachers. Patriot Oaks Jazz Ensemble and Chorus Perform at Icemen Hockey Game On the evening of November 2nd, the Patriot Oaks Jazz Ensemble and Chorus traveled to the Jacksonville Memorial Arena to perform before the Jacksonville Icemen game. The jazz band played in the lobby for 50 minutes as the crowd entered. Playing tunes from The Beatles to Chicago as well traditional jazz songs, the band drew such a crowd that the arena attendants had to ask the hockey patrons to move along more than a couple times. It was a nice tribute the efforts and talents of our jazz band students. Additionally, the Patriot Oaks Select Chorus sang the Star Spangled Banner on the ice surface before the game. With the entire crowd and both teams watching, the 12 chorus members tuned and sang the patriotic arrangement totally a Capella in front of crowd of 5300 people. It was indeed a proud night to be a Charger! The chorus performance can be seen here at
