1 1 Squalicum High School May 26th Direct Line to the Attendance Office: SQUALICUM SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS! At the Whatcom County Dollars for Scholars Awards presentation on May 9 th 2017, 24 Squalicum Seniors received 32 scholarships!

2 Latino Education Summit 2 Shuksan Middle School hosted the third annual Latino Education Summit on May 20. The summit was sponsored by the Family Engagement Department for Bellingham Public Schools. The free event included a complimentary meal, entertainment and guest speakers. Students and families attended to celebrate and learn more about opportunities and supports for all students. The Bilingual event met the Promise by developing and supporting multilingual readers and speakers. Mrs. O Brien from the SQHS Career Center took a group of students to visit Williams Northwest in Sumas on May 10 th. This was one of several school to industry field trips offered to Squalicum students this spring meeting the Promise by developing trades people and skilled uses of technology. Career Field Trip

3 A Message from Principal Everett Greetings Storm Families & Students, 3 It is amazing to me that when we return next Tuesday, we will have less than three weeks left in this school year. And yet, it s time. The weather has turned, we are done with AP exams, state exams are taking place right now and we just concluded our last assembly the Character Awards! As a staff, we are honored to teach and work with your children. The Character Awards are an opportunity to recognize students who demonstrate outstanding integrity, kindness and selflessness that is present in our entire student body. These students are selected by staff members and celebrated by the whole school. Staff speakers, Mr. Wolverton and Mrs. Gribble, set the context and our student musicians performed superbly. Congratulations to our new Character Award winners! We have amazing talent at Squalicum and we work hard to support students passions. In fact, our band just visited Victoria this past weekend. Ms. Kay Reilly, our phenomenal band director, has provided a brief summary of their time in Victoria: This past weekend, the Storm Band went to Victoria, BC for our spring trip to march in the Victoria Day Parade. Our band did a tremendous job in each performance, including a concert at the Inner Harbor for the public, the Parade of Bands, and then the actual parade itself. What our incredible group of kids accomplished, with mental and physical endurance and teamwork, was simply outstanding. They fought through the heat (nearly 80 degrees plus wool uniforms on), in the direct sun, playing and marching in the parade for over an hour, and they sounded great. We had a few students who experienced heat exhaustion by the end, and one injury, and the other students around them pulled through and supported them by playing out and carrying them through, even when they weren t sure they had any more to give either. Our Drum Majors leading the band in the Victoria Parade were Audrey Goo and Corina Lindsey, and our Drumline Captain was Spencer Thulin. I am so proud of my students, and I am grateful to them and our amazing chaperones for such a wonderful trip!

4 4 While we are very proud of our over-45 clubs and strong athletic and fine arts performance programs at Squalicum, the talent doesn t stop there. We have students engaged in many other endeavors outside of school. I m excited to share about Jordan LeCompte and Eliza Hardin, two 9 th grade Squalicum students. They ride with Ferndale s competitive Equestrian team. A couple of weeks ago they competed in the Washington High School Equestrian Team competition in Moses Lake. Both Jordan and Eliza qualified for the regional tournament in In Hand Obstacle Relay and were first alternates in Drill. Jordan was also first alternate in Trail. They will be competing in Redmond, Oregon over the June 3 rd weekend. It is a testament to these two Storm students as they are challenging themselves at a highly competitive level and making us proud! Congratulations and Good Luck, Jordan and Eliza! When it comes to the character, integrity, compassion, commitment and dedication of our students we have a lot of reasons to be proud! Thank you, parents, for your continued participation and support of your students as we near the end. We want every student to finish strong engaged and active! Storm Pride is State Wide! James Everett Principal GRADS Students visit WWU! Squalicum High School GRADS students visited Western Washington University last week. Our GRADS students had the opportunity to tour a four year university and get a taste of what college life is like. They learned first hand about the importance of being College Ready!

When these are completed the student may pick up graduation tickets and purchase honor cords in the ASB office. June 14 & 15 finals June 16 th Senior Breakfast/Mandatory Graduation Rehearsal- 8:00 am for breakfast in the commons are, Rehearsal to follow. Please make your requests directly with the school. Seniors Turn in Gratitude Forms Seniors, do you have someone that has helped you become the awesome person you are today? The Senior Tea on June 5th is all about letting those people know you appreciate them. We need you to fill out your Gratitude Form and turn it in to the white basket in the Main Office. Lose your form? No problem! There are also blank forms you can use in the white basket at the main office. Get your form turned in by May 31st or you will loose this chance to spread the gratitude. Remember to invite this person to the Senior Tea June 5th at 6:30 PM in the Squalicum Commons!

6 Senior Gratitude Tea June 5 th, :30pm This evening is for the senior students to invite an adult (coach, parent, grandparent, teacher, counselor or other) that has made a lasting impression or word of encouragement in their life to help them reach graduating high school. We ask that the student write out their words of gratitude to this special guest prior to the evening and turn it in to the Tea Committee. Extra forms are in the main office to fill out. Please come and enjoy the first of many graduation traditions. 6 Photos needed for Senior Celebration Tea MEMORY WALL We need photos of GROUPS OF STUDENTS from past activities over the years such as clubs, teams, dances, field trips, school time, performances, fund raisers, picnics, etc. Please label photos (on the back) with time frame (pre-school, grade school, middle school, high school). Also please send 1 BABY PICTURE of your senior with name written on the back Please submit prints or copies as photos will not be returned. Of course, you can retrieve them from the displays after the Tea has concluded on June 3rd. DO NOT send photos or submit CDs as we have no budget to print them. Drop off photos in the colorfully decorated photo box in the SQHS Main Office as soon as possible or at the latest on or before FRIDAY, May 19th (we need time to mount them on poster boards for the Tea). 7 7 Dark Dude by Oscar Hijuelos In Wisconsin, Rico could blend in. His light hair and lighter skin wouldn't make him the "dark dude" or the punching bag for the whole neighborhood. The Midwest is the land of milk and honey, but for Rico Fuentes, it's really a last resort. Trading Harlem for Wisconsin, though, means giving up on a big part of his identity. And when Rico no longer has to prove that he's Latino, he almost stops being one. Except he can never have an ordinary white kid's life, because there are some things that can't be left behind, that can't be cut loose or forgotten. 9 Community Service Opportunities 9 Volunteering within your community is one of the best ways to learn something new, meet people and support a cause that is important to you. Let s not forget how great it looks on those college applications too. Whatever your motivation, check out these events and opportunities to become more involved with your community. They are recruiting for volunteers (16+ years old or in partnership with parent/older sibling) to be at all 8 of the destinations for the racers. Also seeking volunteers for set up on the 27 th. Be a part of this great community event! Common Threads seeks garden loving volunteers to help with afterschool garden and cooking clubs at various elementary school settings. Come help our students learn and grow! Volunteer Chore Program provides supports to help the seniors (60 and over) and adults with functional disabilities remain independent in their own homes. 16 16 Are you going to college next year? Then you need to complete your Financial Aid (FAFSA) application asap! All seniors planning on going on to any type of college (Community or Technical Colleges, 4 year colleges and Universities, Art Schools, Technical programs etc) need to apply! You can complete the application at home. Go to: Get your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID to start the process and follow the directions online. Problems or Questions? Contact your SQHS counselor.
