3 3 Greetings Storm Students and Families! Thank you for attending our Back to School Event Tuesday evening. It is always a challenge to create a structure to meet with families that works for everyone and yet worth the effort because it is so helpful to connect. We appreciate you taking the time in your busy lives to hear what it is we are doing and how we are structuring our classes. Please don t hesitate to contact your students teachers, counselor or one of the administrators with any questions or concerns you may have. We are looking for multiple ways to live the Bellingham Promise. Our continued partnership with parents is the best opportunity for your students to enjoy a positive, supportive experience here at Squalicum. One of the strongest voices at Squalicum is our student voice. We have a superb leadership program and enjoy an incredible relationship with our students leading much of the great work to connect students here. It s not just about celebrations. It s also about how we care for one another, work together, and work to include each other. We have an extensive club program where students were able to sign up this Wednesday. Please talk with your students about their interests in any of our clubs or activities. If there are any questions, don t hesitate to contact our Activities office. Building opportunities to connect and sponsoring ongoing involvement is incredibly important and linked to continued academic success. One of the great traditions of high school is Homecoming Week. Ours starts tomorrow with the hall decorating competition and continues all next week. We will have a kickoff assembly Monday at 9:20 am, dress up days, competitions at lunch, and conclude the week Friday with another assembly at 1:30 pm, a tailgate activity at Civic Field and the football game against Oak Harbor at 7:00pm. And the dance, of course, Saturday evening! There are more activities and competitions throughout the week. Homecoming is an opportunity for our students to celebrate each other and Squalicum, while also honoring our SQHS alumni and our great community. Thank you for your involvement and support. And, please join us. It s going to be a great week! Storm Pride is State Wide! Principal James Everett
4 Clubs are a great way for students to get involved at SQHS! 4

6 6 Three Dark Crowns By Kendra Blake Every generation on the island Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the lions. But becoming the Queen Crowned isn t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it s not just a game of win or lose it s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown. Lab Girl By Hope Jahren Lab Girl is a book about work, love, and the mountains that can be moved when those two things come together. It is told through Jahren s stories: about her childhood in rural Minnesota with a mother and a father who encouraged hours of play in his classroom s labs; how she found a sanctuary in science, and about the inevitable disappointments, but also the triumphs and exhilarating discoveries, of scientific work. Yet at the core of this book is the story of a relationship Jahren forged with a wounded man named Bill, who becomes her lab partner and best friend. Their sometimes rogue adventures in science take them from the Midwest across the United States and back again, over the Atlantic to the ever-light skies of the North Pole and to tropical Hawaii, where she and her lab currently make their home.
