July was everything that one could hope for: sunny days, hot weather and great opportunities for outdoor family time. The holiday weekend kicked off with the first of five "Movies by the Lake". More than 300 people gathered by the Gazebo at Lake Quannapowitt to watch The Lego Movie on a giant, inflatable screen. The Savings Bank and Wakefield Recreation Department, our partners for this summer series, are as excited WCAT is to provide (for free) familyfun entertainment to the greater Wakefield community. Of course, the big event this month was the return of Wakefield s famous July 4th Parade! Marching bands from all over the country, dancers, clowns, local athletes and horses thrilled the crowds. Hats off to organizer Pat Sullivan! In other July news, WCAT began its first of three, one-week, Kids Video Club camps. For this week, we had planned to film on the football field, but rain forced us inside for plan B where the middle-school-age students created 10-minute videos around their favorite movies. Meanwhile Steve Maio and David Watts, Jr. filmed an episode of the Town Administrator s Report, and Wake Up (Wakefield Unified Prevention) and WAAV (Wakefield Alliance Against Violence), groups committed to making Wakefield safe and healthy, held their monthly meetings. By the end of July, WCAT had edited and posted all of our mobile shoots and we brought a second movie to the lake, Back to the Future! This event, bringing in a crowd nearing 300, offered a special attraction a replica DeLoren Time Machine, replete with wax Marty McFly and Doc Brown and many of the movie s props. Many visitors took advantage of photo ops, with the proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Next up on the movie playlist is Jumanji on August 13th, 8:30pm.

Subcommittee 4th of July Despite a drizzly start, the 2015 return of the Famous Wakefield 4th of July Parade was a terrific event! The diligence, commitment and organizational skills of Organizer/Parade Committee Chairman Pat Sullivan, who happens to be in his young 20s, certainly paid off. From the viewing stand, emcee Betsy Sheeran announced each participant -- marching bands, dancers, sports teams, etc. -- in entertaining fashion! WCAT captured the event from a number of angles: we operated a camera from the top of the truck, a second cameraman moved amongst the crowds, and two more at either end of the reviewing stand. We placed microphones in key places and Dan Benjamin and our Executive Director Tom Stapleton narrated events from a commentator s table. Dan, a long time Parade Committee member, has worked on this event with WCAT in the past; it was great to have him back in this role. Wakefield Native Natalie Joly even had her own float, gracing the crowds with her musical talents. After the Parade, the crowds dispersed although many headed toward the lake to set up for the evening s fireworks and sample foods from the many vendors at the Lower Commons. This year s fireworks display was terrific! The crowds cheered and sang all the way through the grand finale! Throughout Wakefield, you could see other fireworks light up the sky, adding to the excitement of this holiday. Town Administrator Steve Maio estimated 70,000 people attended! 4 Fresh On the Horizon P A G E 4 From May to now, everyone at WCAT has been busy filming and editing outdoor and indoor productions. Check out our videos on Relay for Life, Festival by the Lake and the 4th of July. All can be found through out website at; wcatwakefield.org. You can also find the program schedule to see when particular shows will be airing throughout the week. August promises to be just as busy as June and July. We will offer our second and third weeks of Kids Video Club. Students are introduced to cameras, audio equipment, reading scripts and get to film their own movie. Each group of students coming in is so different, even when we have a script pre-written, we never really know how the end product will look. Our classes sold out early this year. The word about the fun kids have in this program is getting out there! On August 8 th and 9 th, David Watts, Jr. will teach a comprehensive digital photography workshop. We ll hold two more movie nights, this time with an even larger screen! The first is Jumanji on Thursday August 13, the second, Saturday August 22, The Princess Bride, follows Wakefield s daylong Italian Festival, which is a huge event for downtown Wakefield. Main Street is blocked off to all traffic, so visitors can wander freely from vendor table to table, shop to shop. Many retailers love this foot traffic, and welcome visitors with air conditioned stores and restaurants. There will be live entertainment and a classic-car show. So don t forget to secure a seat by the Lake to watch the sunset before our movie. Also in August, we will film two more segments of Health Minute, a series of short PSA s for Hallmark Health. The focus for these videos, are Diabetes and Weight Management, respectively. Host Kristin Perfetuo will discuss different types of Diabetes, ways to help prevent and treat the disease, and methods for maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. We have already filmed several Health Minute PSAs and the feedback Hallmark Health has been great. Most of these PSA s can be seen on our Facebook page the same day the Hallmark Health posts them. It is an honor to work with such wonderful people and help spread the word about common health risks and ways to prevent and or, treat them. Movies by the Lake Movies by the Lake is getting a second mention since the event has become larger than anyone anticipated. After the success of the first movie, The Lego Movie, friends of WCAT requested more! So we added two more to make this a five-movie series. For the July 23 screening of the classic, Back to the Future, we invited car enthusiast (and huge BTTF fan) Bill Shea to bring in his customized DeLorean Time Machine and other movie props. While he was unable to join us, his son, daughter-in-law and grandson, were knowledgeable representatives. They encouraged selfies and took special photos for modest rates of $5 - $10. The proceeds from the pictures were donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Coming August 13, is Jumanji, a favorite for Robin Williams fans, and on August 22, we ll show The Princess Bride. Closing out the series on September 2, is Guardians of the Galaxy. We are happy to bring this last-gasp-of-summer family event, before the students head back to school. Maybe we ll get a chance to catch our breath, then, although I doubt it. We have a great deal in store for the Newest movie poster with added dates!!! Autumn. Stay tuned.
