BVYC Additional Appointees: Carl and Sue Pedersen, Christmas Angels Ron Smith, By-Laws Committee Laurie Irvin and Noreen LeBlanc, Club Store Art Night s Fun and Frolic group, Social Brainstorm Team Noreen LeBlanc, Audit Committee Welcome, Kim and Travis! At our October general meeting, Kim and Travis Carpenter were sworn in as new members. Their current boat, Wundorstar, is moored on D dock with the cool crowd! Travis and Kim have been contemplating joining the club for quite awhile and decided it was time to sink or swim. Say hello to them at the next club function they are really enjoyable to talk to and have many stories of traveling via land AND sea stories that are quite inspiring! Welcome aboard, Kim and Travis! The port is replacing the yacht club deck during the month of November ~ November 1 st through the 15 th. Please be mindful when trying to access the clubhouse. Sally Hass, Port of Brownsville club liaison PJ Party and Movie Night Mary Asla is hosting a PJ Party and Movie night at the clubhouse on Friday, December 1 st. All are invited. Bring snacks and beverages. Mary promises to run an oldie-but-goodie movie (or two) that will be family-friendly. But it just might end up girls night if the guys don t like sweet Loretta Young-type movies :) November 2017 Page 2

Holiday Harbor Staycation You are all invited to the Brownsville Yacht Club s holiday potluck and boat lighting on the weekend December Please see the fleet report in this newsletter for more information. Commodore s Report Fall season is upon us and leaves are dropping! And, as I write this, it is 32 degrees outside! Snow is falling too! WOW! Time to make sure the boats are winterized and ready for the cold! WIth so much going on, this edition of the newsletter is already sure to be chock-full of information and news about past and upcoming events! So I will keep my inputs very brief so you can focus on all the good stuff that has been submitted by our hard-working and devoted club members. I do want to give a shout out to Carolyn Thomas and Jill Jones, and shine the spotlight upon them both for doing an awesome job organizing and setting up for this year s Haunted Harbor Scare Away Hunger event! Of course, they couldn t have pulled it all off without the help of the many members and supporters who brought boats to the breakwater, decorated them, and gave out a ton of treats to the huge crowd of trick or treaters! I heard that nearly 600 people came out to enjoy all the lighted decorations, trick or treat, and to be greeted at the ramp and mildly(?) frightened by a silent, strange looking creature (powered by Terry Asla inside!) with flashing eyes, freaky clothing, and unexpected movements! A tip of my oversized glowing halloween hat goes to: Rich and Laurie, JR and Tina, Terry and Mary, Kim and Mike, Liz and Mark, Ron and Noreen, Johnny, Travis and Kim, Troy and Sue, Bob and Nancy, Paul and Laurie, Paul and Jill, JT and Carolyn, Sally H, Sally S, Cheryl, Mary J, Fiddler s Dream s crew, and guest boating couples: Whiteheads, Hallfmans, and Yeiks.Well done to all, your boats looked terrific you did great! Please be sure to read all of the other inputs the next two months are full of holiday activities and fun! Happy Thanksgiving! Robert Bale, Commodore, M/V Bobbin Antsy Please consider bringing items for the food bank... there is a donation container conveniently located inside our clubhouse. November 2017 Page 3

Vice Commodore s Report Well, I hope that you all had great fun at Haunted Harbor. Mary gave me the two hour run-down and stated that the club took in a bunch of food and the kids doubled again. Jill reported that it took her 45 minutes to walk to the end of the boats and I believe back again. So I am simply guessing here that the kids had a safe and awesome Halloween. The weather is great again today, Saturday the 28 th, as I have been commanded to write something for the November newsletter. So hi-de-ho and away I go. We had a great executive board meeting, and we all decided that one hour is not enough time to great it all handled. The strides are huge, however, and it continues to look like a great year coming up. I just kept hearing Thanksgiving dinner on the 14 th with people already wanting to get involved. We had a great fest last year, so I am truly looking forward to this year. Also, we have a December event planned. Then the Boat Show and people will start to think spring. Sorry for those of you that are thinking snow and skiing this year but: THINK SPRING. This last summer was great, but I think that it caught some of us off guard as we all expected a wet summer. So get that engine work done early and we will see what the March cruise brings us. Jill is really working hard but, as happens every year, she and Paul could use the help if anyone is thinking that way. Let her know and let s try and host a cruise this year. I learned years ago in a management class that if you want to complain you just might want to have a suggestion in how to go a different direction. This is your club so pitch in and help! Oh, just a quick note. As we are trying to update memberships if you still owe dues please let us know when we can expect them. Also if any information has to be updated let us know. I understand that not everyone goes through boats like Mary and myself but try to let me or Bob know where you stand. Dues are a big part of the yearly budget and we sort of need everyone to catch up if you have not paid up! Please! Also, as usual we are looking for new people. Let them know to come out for FREE and hang with us for a evening or event. We all will do what we can to let them know they are loved and wanted. We have cheap (or inexpensive) club house rentals, and I believe we have reciprocals with almost every club around including some in Canada and Hawaii. Sue Pederson said they cruised this summer for almost free with the different clubs welcoming them in. This is too cool to pass up. Let s use our club s recips and stay for almost free. We offer a lot for a new person or the experienced seaman. I have even heard that some folks are stepping up to talk at meetings and offer some extra information that just may help us all. OH yea, again for free. This is all too neat so let s get involved and take ownership of the club and use what we have: a really nice facility! Rich Johnson, Vice Commodore, M/V Lani Kai Kingston Cove Yacht Club... has issued an invitation to our club members to join in The Port of Kingston s holiday festivities. The opening event is on the same day as our Christmas Party (December 2 nd ), but their harbor is lit up from dusk to dawn from December 2 nd to January 7 th. Come on down and enjoy the 500,000 lights! November 2017 Page 4

Rear Commodore s Report Happy Egg Nog season! It's pumpkin-everything time as fall is finally showing up. I hope most of us have our winter checklist nearly knocked out for our vessels. Haunted Harbor was a blast as usual. Those of you on the breakwater did an excellent job decorating and once again made for a great experience for the local community. I want to extend a big thanks to our housing committee, especially Paul and Carolyn, who have come up huge maintaining the club before and after rentals come in. Some of you may have noticed that the lower handle on our front door wasn't working properly. Paul has replaced it for now, but we're looking into an entirely new lock system we'll discuss in the upcoming meeting. We've talked about kitchen improvements for as long as I can remember, but for now, our budget is lacking. The executive committee is in a bit of a scramble to get where we need to be, so for now things like new cabinets/stove have taken a backseat as we catch up. Happy Thanksgiving, Daniel Bural, Rear Commodore, M/V Lani K Too Fleet Report For next year's cruises, I have added an extended stay option for those that can make it on our July cruise. After the Fishermen's Terminal cruise, July 20-22, Tyee Yacht club has been added for July for those that want to stay a few extra days in Lake Union/Lake Washington area. We have a reciprocal with them and they have room for around four boats. Holiday Harbor boat lighting/potluck December 8-10 : Join us in the fun!! Let's see if we can get everyone 'lit' for the holidays. Friday: bring your boats over to the breakwater or A dock, depending on boat size. Saturday: decorate your boats (contest with prize for the winner), at 5:30 pm light up your boats and come up to the clubhouse for pizza and BYOB. Paul and I will be the judges since we are not bringing our boat. (I won't take bribes, but Paul might!!) Contest winner will be announced. Sunday 10 am: Come up to the clubhouse for coffee and a potluck breakfast, bring a dish to share. "A" dock has a size limitation of about 32 feet according to the port, but if the weather is stormy the best bet is the breakwater. December 16 th Poulsbo Yacht Club s Lighted Boat Parade: This year for those interested we will be joining Poulsbo Yacht Club for their boat parade. Bill Whiteley is organizing the event. If anyone would like moorage for the event, contact their dock master, Linda Loux at branwen.linda@gmail.com or (206) M ake your own reservations for this if you are interested in mooring at Poulsbo for the night. I am waiting to hear back on what route they are taking and where to meet them and will let November 2017 Page 5

you know. I will have a sign-up sheet at the November meeting, so I can let them know how many boats will be joining them. If you aren't attending the meeting but would like to join the boat parade, me please. Jill Jones, Fleet Captain, M/V Oceana Kingston Killick [ kil-ik] noun 1. A small anchor or weight for mooring a boat, sometimes consisting of a stone secured by pieces of wood. 2. Any anchor. Wow! This cruise was fun! We all really enjoyed the kibitzing up at Kingston Cove Yacht Club. The margaritas really got the convos flowing, and the cheeseburgers were to die for! Kudos to KCYC for a wonderful night! It was noisy, crowded, and fun! Fleet Captain Jill did a wonderful job facilitating a great gathering on Saturday night up at the Filling Station and that place is aptly named. Jill s calzone alone was large enough to feed a whole table. The Hawaiian pizza was super yummy, and everyone who didn t order the prawns and chips were lusting after their neighbor s plates. We had a total of EIGHT boats: Finesse, skippered by Liz and Mark, Sea Hound, skippered by JR and Tina, Bobbin Antsy, skippered by Bob and Nancy, Last Waltz, skippered by Carl and Sue, Lani Kai, skippered by Rich and Mary, Tove Marie, skippered by Jeff and Johnny, Emerald Isle, skippered by Rich and Laurie, and Dream Weaver, skippered by John and Laurie. Our club s Keurig served us well for the Saturday and Sunday morning coffee hour, plus an impromptu Sunday morning breakfast was a sight to behold. Yummy frittatas, egg dishes, pastries, bacon, sausage, etc! It is amazing what our boaters can come up with last minute from their larders. We had a great time wandering up the main street and visiting the end-of-year farmers market. What a wonderful way to end our year of cruising. A big thank you to all who have joined in this great cruising year. Ok! Ok! OK! Everyone has googled, questioned, and rumor-mongered long enough! Our very own Love-Child states that this cover picture was taken actually five years later than the actual Woodstock festival and, to boot, it was with a nearly-nude fellow who beat her at monopoly one day prior. Can t figure out whether it should be shame on the nearly-nude aspect or shame on the beating of her at monopoly??? Ahhhh, college. Who knew? Who Knows? Her name is written SOMEWHERE in this newsletter!!! November 2017 Page 6

Haunted Harbor: Scared Away Hunger: The 3 rd annual Haunted Harbor, held on Friday, October 27 th, was once again a HUGE success. Our Brownsville Yacht Club sponsored this amazing community event supporting the Bremerton Food Line. There were a total of 14 boats decorated, lit up, and having loads of fun. Thank you to all the BVYC member and guest boats participating: Kujira, Buddy!, Emerald Isle, Sea Hound, El Solteron, Solitude, Finesse, Reel Time, Reely Ours, Wundorstar, Halff Time, Artemis, Dream Catcher, and Fiddler s Dream. The Port of Brownsville staff assisted and ensured that the event was ready with lifejackets, cones for the car club, and stations for crowd control. The Anubis Hearse Club arrived with four antique hearses, and provided goodies for trunk-and-treat. At the over-the-water pavilion, Art SLAM Studio members provided coloring and pumpkin carving demonstrations. Captain Safety JB again did an incredible job informing the attendees of the safety rules and lifejackets while the Kitsap Maritime Heritage Foundation played spooky music and had a puppeteering display on Fiddler s Dream. An event like this cannot happen without the Fantastic Volunteers that stepped up to help with: directions, life jackets, information, guiding, and counting. Even the WEATHER cooperated the rain held off and there was no wind to spoil the occasion. At this family friendly event even The Tooth Fairy was present and enjoying her time and pleased with the outcome of this evening. It is estimated that this year s Haunted Harbor played host to over 600 attendees. Bremerton Food Line s board president, reported that roughly 500 pounds of food and another $80.00 in cash donations were brought in. The night ended with a social gathering in the clubhouse. Thank you to ALL that made this Haunted Harbor #3 such a success. Carolyn Thomas, The Tooth Fairy Jill Jones, Fleet Captain November 2017 Page 7

Art Night at the Club Club member, Barbara Reasons, had a great turnout at our first Art Night of the season on October 17 th. Members came and colored, crocheted, felted, beaded, and one even assembled a miniature sailboat. Still another member cleaned out our silverware drawers! Whew! Industrious! Out of this great evening, a casual team was formed to garner ideas for social events. This team, aptly named, Fun and Frolic, has already come up with a few social events for the near future. Check out our club calendar! BTW, two more Art Nights are set for November 7 th AND November 29 th. Art Night is a great time to gather, create, and socialize! All projects are welcome even if it is just storytelling and drinking wine! Enjoyed at the Installation Dinner If you weren t there, shame on you! Sweet Sue s Perfect Peas from the files of Sue Pedersen 2 pkgs frozen peas 1 pkg frozen pearl onions 2 cups white sauce, recipe below Mix together in casserole and heat til nice and hot. White sauce 4 tbls butter 4 tbls flour 2 cups milk ¼ tsp salt Dash pepper In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour, salt and pepper until smooth. Gradually whisk in the milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Use immediately or refrigerate. Next month: Daniel s meatballs!!! Isaac s favorite! Thank you to Carolyn Thomas for the excellent treats at the October general meeting November 2017 Page 8

Christmas Angels Each year our club sponsors 3-4 needy children who are given to us by Kitsap Resources. This season, we have a baby girl, two 3 year old boys and an 11 year old girl. These children need to receive at least three gifts from their want and need lists. Many of the requests are simple: winter coats, shoes, some books, art supplies, and so on. But we also have a need for a twin bed, a toddler bed, a stroller, and a book case. If any of you know of some gently used furniture, that would be fine. Please give us a call to discuss. The sign-up sheets were passed around at the last meeting, but there are still plenty of items needed. We will bring the sheets to the November meeting, too. However, since our deadline is the first week of December, some of you may want to have a head start. No need to wrap, but please remove price tags. The child's ID # and name MUST be firmly attached. Our club members have been very generous of their time and money in past years and the families have greatly appreciated our efforts to make their holidays so wonderful for the kids! Send us an or give us a call now if you can help out. lastwaltz2@hotmail.com, (360) Thanks in advance for all the help! Carl and Sue Pedersen, Christmas Angels November s Our wise (and, we must say, very witty) JR Leaman advises to make sure that when you are coming into any dock, make sure that the dock power pedestal breaker is turned to OFF before you plug in your power cable this prevents any shocking event that could ruin your boat vacay. Plus, remember to UNPLUG your power cord before pulling away from the dock an ANONYMOUS boater (or two) has experienced this Bayliner Spring Line phenomenon. Thank you, JR, for this month s boating tip! Yay! You DID remember to protect your pet on the water We knew you really weren t a Pork-Chop!!! November 2017 Page 9

Here we have Liz Mackall and Mark Horowitz on a short cruise to LaConner and Anacortes with a couple of pals. They reported that they had a great time, good weather, and wonderful fellowship. C h r i s t m a s Party Our annual Christmas party will be held on Saturday, December 2 nd. It starts off at 6 pm with tree decorating and a social. Then, at 7 pm, our white elephant gift exchange starts. This is a real blast! Each person who wants to participate brings a wrapped gift. The gift can be re-purposed or new, it doesn t matter! It can be delightful, or just plain silly. Mark it as Adult or Child according to what the gift contains. Also, if the gift is gender-specific, mark that as well (i.e., Adult Male, Adult Female, Child Male, Child Female ). Be creative! The more folks joining in this zany exchange, the better! Plus, we hear that Santa is supposed to be dropping by to help! Carolyn Thomas is kindly hosting this event please contact her at cthomas3616@gmail.com for further information. So, plan on bringing: Willing hands to decorate the club for the holidays Holiday treat to share Beverage of your choice Wrapped and labeled gift for the gift exchange Donation for the food bank Christmas Angel gifts (if you signed up) We know that the holiday season is always jam-packed with activities, but please try to make room for this special event. This gathering is always a joyful time of fun and fellowship. November 2017 Page 10

Three dear members of our club family have recently passed away: Doreen Miller, past commodore Bob Pittelli ( ), and Shorty Garoutte. They brought much joy to our lives and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to all their families. Upcoming Events Don t forget to mark on your calendars: two art nights in November, Thanksgiving Potluck, Wild Plunge presentation, PJ Party and Movie Night, Christmas Party, Holiday Harbor Staycation, marine composting toilets presentation, etc. Please check out the club s website for updated info!
