2 President s message Welcome to the culmination to what I believe has been another very successful albeit wet season for our club. We have spent our second season at Merici College and while it is a brilliant venue for Little Athletics, it is just too small for a club our size. We thank Merici College for accommodating our club over the past two years but with the work completed at Dickson we will be returning there in September/October this year. Building on our growth last year we have grown further this season, with our numbers increasing from 194 to 212 (up from 175 the previous year). Interestingly we are only one of three established Canberra and district clubs that have grown in the past 12 months, and the only one that has grown in each of the past two years. With the London Olympics to be held later this year, we are expecting a further spike next season, making the move back to Dickson a necessity. Speaking of the London Olympics, we are absolutely delighted to have two of our former athletes representing Australia. Well known to our club due to her actively providing training to our older athletes and previous successes, Lauren Boden is competing in the 400 hurdles. Anna Flanagan is part of the Australian Women s Hockey Team. We congratulate them on their selection and success so far and wish them the very best of success in London. I believe a lot of the success we have achieved during the season has been down to our hardworking Committee and pleasingly, our increasing number of coaches. I would like to publically acknowledge the sensational efforts of the following (in order of tenure): Nerys Jones Nerys has been one of our two hardest and quietest workers. Not only has she been our Secretary, she managed the website (until Catherine Brady stepped up), rewrote our Constitution (certainly not the most interesting job in the world), developed our three-year Strategic Plan and prepared, submitted and secured a $6,500 grant from the ACT Government to assist with the upgrade of our three long jump runs up at Dickson. Lucy Boom Lucy as Registrar is another who does an enormous amount of work behind the scenes. Until you have been involved in the running of the club you do not appreciate how much work she does. Not only does Lucy manage all the registrations, she records EVERY athletes performances every week into the database, ensuring that the records and awards are all spot on. Chris Bacchus Chris, our On-Track Guru and Chief Cheerleader, is very much the face of Corroboree for our youngest athletes. The amount of time and effort he has spent devising an On-Track program that is both instructional and fun is rewarded each week by the enjoyment our U6-U9 athletes have and improvement they demonstrate each session. Of course it would be remiss of me not to also acknowledge Ruud who has taken on some of the on-track responsibilities as well as be a very valuable helper and coach of the club. Tony Marks Treasurer. Tony has overseen the vast improvement in our financial position over the past two years and we are is now in a far stronger position after being all but broke three years ago. In addition to having to spend significant sums on our long jump run-ups we will have sufficient funds to ensure our return to Dickson will see us with the best equipment available. Tony also picked up managing the BBQ when Lori went away with work. Ingrid van Takken Vice President. Ingrid and the rest of the family have been tremendous helpers to the club. Ingrid is always happy to help, whether it be working on the Constitution, attending ACTLAA meetings, helping set up on each Saturday morning, timekeep etc etc. While not on the Executive the following Committee members have played a key role in the running of the club and their contributions should also be acknowledged: Bernard Nutt Equipment Officer and our ACTLAA representative as Equipment Officer Lori van Dore BBQ Manager Ben Laffin First Aid Officer (unfortunately having a reasonably busy year) Selina and David Canavan Publicity Officer

We, as a Committee, have been very conscious of the need to provide an environment that encourages good sportsmanship, supporting each other at all levels, and balancing the competitive nature of Little Athletics with having a go, having fun and achieving personal bests. Under the tutelage of our wonderful Head Coach John Hunt, we had a regular group of between 15 and 30 each Monday and Wednesday who took advantage of John s experience and dedication to improve the performances of athletes. The results of this training were there for all to see at the Championships. Supporting John at training were Ming and Ruud, our latest Level 2 Coaches We also ran a couple of short programs before and after Christmas with Lauren Boden and had guest appearances from Val Chesterton and others join us to assist coaching the walk, as well as Kevin Graham (grandfather of Patrick) who assisted particularly on Saturday mornings with hurdles and high jump. We do, however, know that we are not perfect and we have had some minor problems over the year, and the Committee will continue striving to improve all aspects of the club and its operations. I would certainly welcome your thoughts on how we can improve and then encourage you to join the committee to implement your thoughts. We still need to focus on increasing numbers for the older age groups as well as maximising parental involvement on Saturday mornings to alleviate the pressure on Age-Group Coordinators. Speaking of Age-Group Coordinators, to all the parents who stepped up and acted in this capacity on a regular basis; those who regularly helped on the BBQ; setting up and putting things away each week and for going above and beyond the call of duty at the ACTLAA Carnivals and Championships, a big thank you. Thank you also to our sponsors Ainslie Football Club and The Tradies Group who assisted us financially, and especially Athlete s Foot Belconnen, who both provided financial and personal assistance throughout the year. The biggest thanks must, however, go to our very special group of athletes. We, as a Committee, are absolutely delighted with how our wonderful children performed at weekly meets, and at the ACT Championships, the Multi-event Carnival as well as a small groups who attended the other club carnivals, held during the season, not only in their efforts on the track and field, but with their sportsmanship regardless of how they performed. Congratulations on all your efforts throughout the season, but a special well done to those who secured medals at the ACT Championships as well as who achieved personal bests. It was just a shame we had such a high level and unprecedented level of injuries that impacted on our overall performance. To those heading off to Hobart next month for the Australian Little Athletics Championships Clare, Shannon,??????????, all the very best wishes to you. Finally, the Committee and I are very proud of our club and we feel we have a wonderful platform to continue to improve in years to come. We certainly adhere to LA s motto of Family Fun and Fitness and this was demonstrated at the Christmas party (apologies for the shaving cream relay) and throughout the season with lots of encouragement for each other to achieve the goals of faster, longer and higher. As always we are looking for further assistance from additional Committee members, age-group coordinators etc and ask you to put your hand up to nominate when the elections come up to join those staying on the Committee into the next year. I can speak from personal experience that it is extremely rewarding to be actively involved. Thank you and see you all again in September/October back at our spiritual home at Dickson.
