1 Treading the Boards The Rockhampton Grammar School Dance & Musical Theatre Academy Newsletter Issue No. 8 December 2018 Presentation Showcase It was a wonderful afternoon of entertainment on Saturday 17 November when each of our DMTA classes presented short items to parents, family and fellow DMTA dancers. The afternoon was split into two sections with our juniors performing first followed by our intermediate and senior students. The afternoon featured students aged from three years up in the various facets of classical ballet, tap, jazz, Highland, hip hop, contemporary, musical theatre and drama. The afternoon also gave everyone the chance to get together as an Academy and share our love of performing. The showcase was followed a week later with our break-up party at the RGS pool which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The staff of the DMTA wish all our students, parents and families a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday break. Classes resume on 4 February To those students and families who are moving on, we thank you for your time at the DMTA and wish you all the best for the new chapter in your life. 2 Life s a Musical! DMTA students are always heavily involved in productions and musicals outside of our own Academy and 2018 has been no different. Several of our students were heavily involved in the RGS Secondary Musical Production of Strictly Ballroom and the RGS Primary Musical Madagascar A Musical Adventure Jr. Stephanie Fernando was also involved in Heights College s Production of The Little Mermaid and a large contingent of our students, including staff member Lita Hegvold, were involved with The Rockhampton Musical Union Youth Choir s production of Shrek the Musical. These students included Xavier Connor, Elsa Connor, Shannon Dalley, Tayah Ellis, Isabella Hanson, Ines Hayman, Trinity March-Hoolihan, Mia McDonald, Roxy McDonald, Mollie Merry-Simpson, Wesley Muir, Millie O Brien, Olivia Offord, George Pentecost, Shannon Smith, William Smith and Cadence Wone De-Rungs. It was a pleasure to watch our students excel in these shows whether it be in the chorus or in lead roles. As an Academy we were very proud of them all and congratulate them on their achievements. In 2019, the Academy will present Disney s Beauty and the Beast Jr as part of our Showcase production at the Pilbeam Theatre on 7 September. We also look forward to seeing some of our Academy members as they perform in Rockhampton Venues and Events 2019 Musical, Kinky Boots. Ari and Georgia Pay a Visit Ari Thompson and Georgia Swan, both professional ballet dancers with the Queensland Ballet, visited our studios on 27 October to run three hours of workshops with our classical ballet students. This is the third year that Georgia has visited us as part of the Queensland Ballet s Adopt-a-dancer programme. In the past David Power has accompanied her, but as he was in Western Australia, we were lucky to meet Ari Thompson who also worked with the students on some technique and repertoire work. The students enjoyed the chance to work with these two professional dancers who share their love of ballet and dance in general. The RGS Dance Council looks forward to subsidising future Queensland Ballet workshops in 2019 for the students of the DMTA. Pictured (top row) Millie O Brien (Mort), Trisha Saini (King Julien) and Medha Koduri (Maurice); (second row) Lily Cooling (Marty) and; Ella Plumb (Gloria); (third row) Millie O Brien (Old Lady), Ava Roche (Zookeeper Zelda); (fourth row) Miss Hegvold and DMTA members who were part of Shrek the Musical ;and Isabella Hanson, Wesley Muir, Madison Schneider and Fynn Moran in Strictly Ballroom; (fifth row) Elyena Belonogoff (Fran) in Strictly Ballroom and Trinity March-Hoolihan and Wesley Muir, also in Strictly Ballroom.
3 A Taste of Gladstone As a new initiative for our competition groups, the Academy travelled to the Gladstone Eisteddfod for the first time, taking seven of our groups to compete. This was a wonderful and enjoyable experience for our students and families, not only to dance our groups once more but to experience competing against other dance schools from around the region. Held during one day at the Gladstone Entertainment and Convention Centre, our junior jazz, tap and ballet groups, intermediate jazz group and senior tap, contemporary and jazz groups performed in some very large sections. We came away with one second place, three third places and two highly commended placings. The Academy intends to take its 2019 groups to this competition again. Summer School Countdown The 2019 advance Summer School kicks off on 14 January and students are already getting excited to work with four amazing professionals over five full days of dance. Kat Hoyos will lead the Musical Theatre workshops whilst Peta Anderson will tap up a storm in the Rhythm Tap classes. We can t wait to meet Aimee and Neale Whittaker who will teach Contemporary and Hip Hop respectively. The Summer School will also feature informative, practical sessions with physiotherapists, psychologists and a nutritionist. Students will also enjoy a pool party, pizza lunch and have the opportunity to show off what they have learnt at a Showcase event on the last day. Some of our senior students will also have the opportunity to work with these tutors on some eisteddfod solos and our new senior jazz and contemporary groups. Places are still available, especially in the junior grades, so don t miss out on your child s spot. Register on the Eventbrite website.

6 Top Results in Examinations Each year the Academy enters students in RAD Classical Ballet, NDAA Highland, AMEB Speech & Drama and ADA Tap and Jazz Examinations. This year saw a record number of entries and a very high standard of results received by students in both student and teacher examinations. These amazing outcomes are due to the hard work and determination of the students, support of their families and the professionalism and standard of the DMTA teaching faculty. Congratulations to all students on these remarkable achievements.
