Evidence of this can be found at our field with many flyers in attendance on any given day. I discovered many years ago that attending meets and flyins around the area added much to our hobby and was just plain lots of fun. You get to fly at different fields, meet many new people, and get to watch very interesting models in action. All in all a fun thing to do. Over the weekend of August 6 thru 8, there were no fewer than three flyins available in Pennsylvania. First was the jet rally in Lebanon, PA, attended by Andy Kane, Andy Finizio, and Tony Masseiella. Another was the warbird flyin in Quakertown, PA, outside Pilly. Several DCRC members intended to attend this meet but, upon arrival, found the field and parking areas too wet. The local club, with much regret, had to call it off. Too bad since, as I have found in the past, this is a great meet if you are into warbirds. The last meet, and the one I want to let you know about, was the Wings Over Piper in Lock Haven, PA. Lock Haven is a small town in the mountains of north-central PA about 4 hours from Rockville. Lock Haven sits right on the Susquehanna River and the drive up there skirts the river for miles. It is a beautiful, scenic drive and worth the effort. Fred Nielsen and I set out Friday morning with three Cubs in the van. The drive honestly passed quickly due to the beauty of the scenery and the chance to talk airplanes nonstop. Lock Haven is where the Piper Aircraft Corp manufactured many famous planes from 1937 to 1984, the most famous being the J-3 Cub of which I think over 20,000 were made. The runway and buildings of the Piper Co are still there but sadly Piper now operates out of Vero Beach, FL. The town still has a soft spot for Piper even though the company and the jobs are gone. They named the airport the William T. Piper Municipal Airport and the flyin was on the grassy area next to the runway. You could almost see the Cubs lined up around the plant site and hear the 65HP engines rev up as they took off. We discovered right away that the people in Loch Haven are very friendly and out to provide hospitality to all visitors. We arrived around noon and found many flyers, some of which we knew, already in the air. Turns out that Dave Fepelstein, Rod Jagger, and Terry Lamb were already there having driven from Quakertown across Pennsylvania after the rain-out. Amazing what we modelers will do to fly our planes. We were glad to see them and, later Dave McQueeney, and his dad Hank, and Allan and Andrea Hoffman joined us. At that point DCRC had to have more attendees than any other club. We clearly had the best selection of models. Dave and Rod brought their amazing Composite-ARF P-51s. Probably the best flying warbirds I have ever seen. Rod also had his B- 25 and Corsair with him. Dave McQueeney had his T-6 and Yellow Zero. Dave likes those warbirds. Terry had his beautiful silver USMC Waco. Weighs 50 pounds and is starting to get dialed in. Allan, Fred and I of course had a covey of Cubs which was the most prevalent model at this meet. Flying continued all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The weather was just about perfect, cool and dry, and every now and then a full-scale would use the main runway causing us to land for safety. The sponsoring club was very eager to please and welcomed one and all. A very laid back, fun time. The mayor of Lock Haven gave a short welcoming speech followed by the Star Spangled Banner on Saturday. One of the highlights was the appearance of William T. Piper, Jr., who still lives part of the year in Lock Haven. Mr. Piper is a very spry 93 years of age. He was signing autographs and was the hit of the show. A very nice touch. There were several full-scale J-3s who did a beautiful flyby followed by a perfect landing. They became the backdrop for a group picture. You can see many DCRC planes and folks in the accompanying pics. Fred and I stopped at the Piper museum on the way out Saturday. The museum is small enough to see in a couple of hours but we could have undoubtedly spent much more time. Lots of pictures and information about the Piper company. There are also 4 or 5 planes on display. This museum is worth seeing and easy to find since it is right on the airport grounds. One of the more interesting events in Piper s history was the flood caused by hurricane Agnes in The water destroyed some $50M worth of planes parked around the plant. The town now has a levee built around the whole area to hopefully keep the airport form suffering that problem again. In summary, the ride to Lock Haven is scenic, the people are friendly and the planes, both model and full-scale, kept flying all weekend. A great time was had by all and the consensus of the group was that we would go again next year.

September 2004 District of Columbia Radio Control Club Page 3 Club Meeting Minutes The meeting was called to order by DCRC president Walt Gallaugher at 8:00 PM. Guests: Irv Hecker, who used to fly with DCRC, came to the meeting tonight with Dan Mintz. Walt opened the meeting by notifying the members that Bob Droege lost an airplane a few years ago, but he recovered the landing gear and he still has it. He brought it to the meeting tonight and is offering it, at no charge, to anyone who can use it. Next, Walt thanked Jim McDaniel and Allan Hoffman for all their hard work on organizing and building the new shelter for the helicopter side of the field. He also took the time to thank all those members who came out to help construct the shelter. The shelter looks great and is a fine addition to the field. Several members of the Monday, Wednesday, Friday Club painted the roof of the shelter at the south end of the field, to block out more sun and make it cooler. The one at the north end will be done later in the year when the weather turns cooler. Walt wished to express thanks to them on behalf of the club. If you leave the field and you are the last one there, please remember to lock the gate when you depart, no matter what time of day it is. The gate has been left open recently on more than one occasion. This is an invitation for trouble. Dan Lewis, from the National Capital Astronomers group has approached the club to see if they could use our field for astronomical observations. Walt will bring up the issue at the next board meeting. If the response is favorable, the request will be passed on to the county. Walt reminded those present that September is the month for nominations for positions coming open on the Board of Directors. Newsletter & Membership: Andy Kane located the club brick in the AMA Walk of Fame in Muncie, IN on a recent trip there. AMA has a beautiful building and a nice facility. They recently hosted the World Control Line Championships. Next weekend is the Bealeton Fly-In and he hopes to see everyone down there. A ¼ scale cub from hangar 9, a JR 8103 radio and an RCS Roto-35 gas engine will be raffled at Bealeton. Flight Instruction: Michael Peizer reported he received an from a concerned member about some safety issues. He hasn t had time to read it completely yet. He will give it a careful reading and respond. Community & Public Relations: Jim McDaniel reported that last fall the club was contacted by Park and Planning asking to use our location for their dear management program. The dear have moved onto our site because the area around us is being managed. Jim remarked it was kind of them to ask since they really didn t need to. Up until now it has always been done at night. This year they want to do it during the day. Jim is a bit concerned about safety issues because our site is in the middle of a rather narrow park. He has been assured the people doing the hunting are professionals and trained in safety matters. Jim will bring it up with the board next Wednesday. Park and Planning would like an answer as soon as possible. If anyone has any objection to the management program at our site, please notify the Park and Planning Commission. The report last month that STAR had produced a DVD and VHS program on the transatlantic crossing and donated two copies to DCRC was erroneous. Joe Foster and Les Hamilton donated the two programs to DCRC. Events: Andy Finizio reported that OctoberFest is scheduled for September 26 th. This will be the last event of the year. OctoberFest is designed to be an informal members only event. Food will be provided free to members, so bring a plane or just come out and have some fun. Old Business: Don Gray asked about the combat event that was supposed to happen in September. Walt replied that the combat group needs some more time to get things together, and they will reschedule the event for sometime in the spring. PGRC is having an aerobatics event this weekend. Andy Kane was approached by Bliss Teague to be event coordinator for AMA District 4. New Business: Kevin informed the members present that Bob Yount has decided not to rejoin the club. Kevin thinks it would be an excellent idea to offer Bob an honorary membership as a way for DCRC to show its appreciation for all Bob has done and continues to do for DCRC. Kevin asked for a show of hands of those who would like to see this happen. All hands were raised. Kevin asked if there were any objections. None were forthcoming. Kevin has talked to Bob about his intentions and offered him the opportunity to decline this offer before it was formally made. Kevin has heard nothing from Bob, so he assumes there is no major objection. Raffle: tonight s raffle prizes were furnished by Doug s Hobby Shop. A Seagull Models, Harrier 3D ARF, for.90 to.120 engines was won by Walt Gallaugher. Walt gave it back to the club to auction off. Chi Lin won the auction with a bid of $ Model Shop: Ron Bozzonetti showed his newest airplane. The mid-wing airplane was designed around an OS.52 four stroke which he saw and really liked. The Wing is covered with Oracover, and the tail was doped. The wingspan is roughly five feet. Next, Ed Leibolt showed a Chaos.40 built from a kit. He modified it slightly by moving the canopy a bit forward, for aesthetic reasons. Ed kept a log as he built the kit. He tried to apply the Monocote so it would look wet. It looks pretty good. It has not flown yet. Program: Andy Kane presented the program for tonight which was a DVD of the latest JR Challenge in Punta Gorda, Florida. It has aired on the outdoor channel three or four times. The JR Challenge is an IMAA event in its third year and growing rapidly. The program gives the viewer a taste of what its like to attend an IMAA sanctioned event. The meeting was adjourned at 9:22 PM.

Page 4 District of Columbia Radio Control Club September 2004 DCRC Air Show Team Bealeton Virginia BY DOUG HARPER The DCRC Air show Team has a long history flying at the Bealeton Flying Circus in Bealeton, Virginia. We have lost track but I believe DCRC has flown at the Flying Circus for close to 30 years. The Flying Circus is a wonderful venue with many full-scale Stearman, Cub, L-4, Ryan, and Waco aircraft in attendance for the Sunday afternoon air show. AST 103 was honored again this year to kick off the full-scale show with our model show. Of course, we are at Bealeton for our annual 3-day IMAA fly in. We were further honored to have our AMA District IV VP, Bliss Teague, in attendance. We changed the format a bit this year since we have some new members and a few different acts from previous years. We started the show with yours truly flying Andy Kane s Stunt Cub to demonstrate the controls and get the show off to an exciting start. The Stunt Cub is a 30% Hostetler design set up to do wild maneuvers (for a Cub) and also has air-show smoke. A real crowd pleaser made all the more interesting by the always informative running commentary of our announcer Charlie Calvert. The Stunt Cub was followed by guest flyer Bob Klenke and his always helpful son Louis. These gentlemen flew with us last year and came back for more. Bob and Louis flew a giant scale Sopwith Pup to show the crowd how a WWI-era aircraft performs (very slow and graceful). Next we moved to a WWII-era warbird with Dave McQueeney flying his Yellow Aircraft A6M Zero. This plane flies exceptionally well and demonstrates just how agile and fast the full-scale aircraft was. Dave and his family have returned to Maryland after several years in Europe and New York. We are glad to have them back. Next Bob and Louis Klenke returned with their Kangaroo jet model. They flew this model in the show last year and we were pleased to have them bring it back again this year. Louis, age 5, is very involved in the act since he helps his dad get the jet positioned for takeoff and by removing the auxiliary fuel tank. The crowd loves it and were more than enthusiastic watching this jet aircraft go thru its paces. Very impressive! A special treat came next in the show. Team Manager, Jim McDaniel, and his son Joseph, age 12, launched a pair of 40% aerobatic planes one a Russian YAK and the other an Extra 330. They are both painted in red, white, and blue color schemes and looked great doing formation aerobatics in the sky. Jim landed and let Joseph have center stage for a solo routine. The crowd was very appreciative and applauded loudly as Joseph went thru his act. Joseph has become quite an accomplished flyer and can be seen flying at our home field on a frequent basis. We then launched a gaggle of giant-scale Cubs, three in all, to show the crowd how formation flying appears. Fred Nielsen, Walt Gallaugher (DCRC President), and Jim McDaniel launched their Cubs into the beautiful blue sky. The crowd loved the formation touch-and-go s performed by these planes and their pilots. Charlie kept promising that the Cubs were really going to land but somehow they had to make one more circle around the field. At this point we moved to the highlight of our show Andy Kane premier aerobatic pilot flying his 42% Yak with air show smoke. Andy, as usual, had the crowd cheering wildly as each maneuver out performed the one before. Hovering with smoke on is always dramatic and gets the crowd going. Andy has been flying most of his life and just keeps getting better. Andy and Jim McDaniel co-cd ed the Bealeton Fly in this year. As a fitting wrap to this great show, we launched a pair for ¼- scale Stearman biplanes. The first, flown by Andy Kane, is a perfect reproduction of the full-scale wing-walker Stearman 450 that just happened to be parked on the grass apron waiting for the full-scale show to start. The second, flown by Allen Hoffman, is another ¼-scale model painted in Navy yellow with red fuse band. Both these planes were scratch built by Marion Mecklenburg and are just superb models. Since the Stearman is the plane of choice at the Flying Circus, these models are always a crowd pleaser and get the crowd ready for the show to come. We always have a great time at Bealeton and want to again thank the Flying Circus for allowing us to spend the weekend there. They are always hospitable to us and provide a fantastic venue for celebrating our love for model aircraft. We look forward to returning next year and doing it all again!

September 2004 District of Columbia Radio Control Club Page 5 Board Meeting Minutes By Mike Peizer The meeting was called to order by president Walt Gallaugher at Walt Good Field at 7:09 PM. In attendance were Jim McDaniel, Andy Kane, Walt Gallaugher, Allan Hoffman, Kevin Jackson, Jeff Mervis and Michael Peizer. Walt reported that Dan Lewis, from the National Capital Astronomers group has answered several questions Walt posed to him concerning how they operate. After some discussion the Board agreed the idea of a trial period to see how things work would answer the few questions remaining. The next step would seem to be to bring it up with the county. Next, Walt reminded the Board that the terms of Mike Dooley, Michael Peizer and Jeff Mervis are due to expire and nominations for these positions will be accepted at the meeting next month.. The Bealeton IMAA Fly-In is coming up soon. The Saturday night dinner is lined up and the movie is set. Jay Stargel will arrive at Bealeton tomorrow to mow the grass. Someone is leaving the gate open all night on a regular basis. Andy Kane has been asked to put a notice in the newsletter. Hopefully, this will alert the errant member about following procedure when they are the last one to leave the field. If this fails to correct the problem other actions will be taken to rectify the problem. Reports: Field Improvement & Awards: Jim McDaniel and Allan Hoffman reported that the helicopter shelter is complete except for some trim paint. The trim color is supposed to be the same as the green on the transmitter impound and they are trying to locate the spare paint. Robby Gladhill Services, Inc. drilled the six holes that formed the foundations for the shelter supports. They were perfectly placed and expertly done and made construction go very quickly. Jim and Allan had high praise for Mr. Gladhill. The container will be removed shortly, and the shingles for the transmitter impound roof will be procured and installed. Royal Flush, the company providing the portable toilet and servicing is doing an outstanding job. Several members have noticed it and are extremely appreciative. Old Business: The Blue Crab Boat Club has an agreement with the county, according to Jim McDaniel. DCRC will keep in touch with the boat club as they commence operations at the SoccerPlex pond. Bob Yount is over the moon about being named an honorary member, according to Kevin Jackson. He will be presented with a certificate of honorary membership at the September meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 8:07: PM. At the board meeting held on July 21, a request was made to consider granting Bob Yount honorary membership of DCRC. Bob has given extensive help to new members of the club over many years. He turns out at every training session and has written some very helpful guides for newcomers that feature on the DCRC web site. He has become the main stay of checking out students models and running in new engines. If there is a problematic engine Bob is always there to help. Bob has not renewed his membership in 2004 but still comes out every training session to help Mike and the team. The members as per our constitution must agree any honorary memberships. Please consider the conferring of honorary membership on Bob Yount and at the meeting in October we will ask you to vote on this by a show of hands. AMA Presidential Election Statement from our Member Maynard Hill I strongly support the reelection of Dave Brown. During several visits that Dave has made to this area in connection with awards about our transatlantic flight, Dave spent several extra days visiting government organizations dealing with security issues, airspace issues, and frequency issues. I know he worked very hard during those meetings. He has established personal relationships with key people. This is a valuable resource for all of us. I am happy he is willing to continue in this demanding position. Maynard Hill Local Club Nominations: At the September regular meeting of the DCRC Club, the floor will be opened for nominations to serve on the board of directors for the DCRC club. The board consists of nine members, each serving a 3 year term. Our board of directors run the day to day operation of the club. Each year 3 board members finish their term, and this year the three are, Mike Dooley, Mike Peizer and Jeff Mervis. Please be prepared to nominate a qualified candidate at the September meeting, elections will be held in October.

September 2004 District of Columbia Radio Control Club Page 7 THE GOOD STUFF BY DON GRAY From time to time I still see some members who are still starting their models without either having someone holding them or using another sort of restraining device. So a few months back I asked if anyone knows of a simple inexpensive restraining device to let me know. Bill Creitz responded with a few devices he found on the web. Because of limited space, I have selected only a couple to share with you. The first, shown in the two photos below, is a simple design called the Helping Hand that can be used either on the ground, preferred, or on a table. It is made out of PVC pipe and insulation. If you don t want to make one, JMD Enterprises sells them for $10. A larger ground version for up to ¼ scale models is also available for $15. Some members use a starting stand as a restraining device. However if you don t like standing in front of the propeller, you may want to consider building the starting stand shown in the next two photos. As you can see, an electric starter is mounted on the stand so you can hold the model from behind during starting. I would add a foot-activated starter switch, which I don t see in the photos. The legs are made from inexpensive 1 PVC pipe. Thanks Bill for sharing these with us. This month s field report starts off with a photo of Ed Leibolt holding his Ace All Star Bipe. Ed built this from a kit, designed back in the late 70 s as I recall. The wings are foam covered with TowerKote. Ed added the optional ailerons to the lower wing. The model is powered by an OS 10FP. The radio is a Futaba Conquest 4 channel with standard servos installed. Hey Ed, is this actually one of your potential UAV designs? Tim Yeung, one of our newer members is shown in the next photo with his Thunder Tiger Raptor 50 v2 helicopter. After not flying for about four years, Tim started back again earlier this year. He is using an OS 50SX-H for power and a JR XP783 radio with a Futaba 401 gyro. Tim also has a Humming Bird, a small electric heli, that can be flown both indoors and outside, in calm conditions. He has also been seen lately flying the park flier-size electric airplanes. The final photo captures Bert Matos posing with his GWS Tiger Moth. He is using a Hitec Flash 5X radio with their Feather Receiver and two HS-55 servos. The model is powered by two 830 mah LiPo s in series, and uses a 9x7 prop geared 6:1. The model flies very well with lots of endurance with the LiPo batteries. Hey Bert, any plans to build a ¼ scale version? See you at the field. Come out to Oktoberfest and enjoy a great day of flying and food! Please remember if you are the last one out of the field lock the gate
