Photo by A. Kane My Paper Airplane Story By : Ken Blackburn I have always liked airplanes - when my first grade teacher asked each student what they wanted to be when they grew up, I replied "aeronautical engineer". At about 10 years old at the Kernersville, NC public library I discovered some paper airplane books with good flying planes, they flew like the balsa planes but without the cost or construction time. I began trying to design my own paper airplanes based on the aerodynamic principles in books about real airplanes. At 13 I came up with a paper plane that flew great, I could launch it straight up outdoors, and it would level off and glide slowly. In good conditions the wind and air currents would result in really long flights (up to 1/4 mile, over 1 minute airtime). I really liked that design, so I kept refining it. At 15 my parents bought me a Guinness book. The time aloft record was 15.0 seconds. My planes were close, so I had a goal. Eventually in collage, with the help of my friends, I set the record at seconds. In 1987 Together Again Productions was filming segments of The Amazing World of Guinness Records, and asked if I would reset the record. Sure. This is my throw for the 1987 record of seconds at the Mecca convention center in Milwaukee, WI. I again reset my record in 1994 for a Guinness show in New York City (JFK airport, American Airlines Hanger #10) at seconds which is the current record. Later that year I had a flight of seconds in Raleigh, NC in Reynolds Coliseum, where I originally set the record. It was disallowed due to a rule requiring continuous video tape of the flight, I had a video, but the camera guy didn't follow the plane. In March 1996 I flew to London for a contest to defend my record. I got 17.3 seconds, not enough for a record, but at least I beat the competition. I can obviously do better than 20 seconds, so I'd like to make it official. It takes me 3 months of working out and airplanetweaking to prepare for a record (1-2 hours daily), so a record attempt is no easy thing, but I might give it a shot later this year. THE GUINNESS RULES FOR THE TIME ALOFT RECORD In September 1998 I received a revised set of rules for the time aloft record from Guinness. These rules are shown here as I received them. RULES The record is for the duration of a flight of a paper aircraft flown indoors, in a closed air environment, where the general public may view the event. Outdoor flights are not eligible for the record. Two independent scrutinizers must be appointed. The scrutinizers must be persons of good character who shall be responsible for the proper application of these guidelines within the spirit of (Continued on page 7)
FEBRUARY 2002 PAGE 3 The meeting was called to order by DCRC president Jim McDaniel at 8:04 PM. Jim started off by describing an educational activity that took place recently. Last Saturday several members of DCRC met at the field and gave a demonstration and some flight instruction to about 15 students from the Wooten High Aeronautical Club. The session was a big hit. Thanks to all those who helped out. It was well worth the effort. Reports: Newsletter/Membership: Andy Kane was not in attendance. Jim gave his report. We have 150 members to date. A PDF version of the newsletter is in beta testing. It is being ed to those members who express an interest in receiving the newsletter in this form. Distributing the newsletter in this way saves a great deal of money, however, there is an indefinable something about being able to hold the newsletter and turn the pages, which is missing in the electronic version. Flight Instruction: Kevin Jackson needs a volunteer to rebuild the club trainer, which met with a rather unfortunate accident due to mechanical failure. During the break Ron Bozzonetti volunteered to do the job. The web site will be back on line very soon. All the pieces are falling into place. Sound & Safety: Walt Gallaugher reported the far corner marker will go up in the spring. A more complete first aid box will be permanently mounted in the transmitter impound. Lastly, Walt is working to obtain an aerial photograph of the flying site so he can mark the boundaries and post it on the transmitter impound. This will give flyers a very good image of the flight box complete with physical boundaries. Field Maintenance: Mike Dooley was not in attendance so Allan Hoffman gave his report. A new portable toilet that is handicapped accessible will be delivered any day now. New Business: Walt Gallaugher brought up the list of potential topics for presentations at the club meetings. He is looking for someone in the club who could give a presentation in battery technology. He is also looking for someone to give a presentation on web sites having to do with RC. Don Gray got a call from a member who said he saw someone flying a trainer on a ball field across Schaeffer Road from SoccerPlex. The flyer is not a member of the club or AMA. He flies on channel 36. This is dangerous in many ways. The area is populated with homes. People use the ball fields on the other side of Schaeffer Road all the time. Kevin Jackson added that a transmitter at SoccerPlex can interfere with flight operations at our new field. The issue of noise when someone is flying 200 feet from your house is obvious, and DCRC could be blamed by angry residents even thought the club is not at fault and does not condone such flying. Once the boat club is up and running they may be able to help keep an eye out for people flying in inappropriate areas simply because of their proximity. Fred Marks said the park flyer issue is a major concern of the AMA. He suggested we go to the county and have them put up a sign to discourage model RC flying in that area. It was also suggested that the local residents be enlisted to keep an eye out for dangerous flying and report it to the proper authorities. Don Gray complimented the board on the idea of putting pictures of the board members in the newsletter. He had some suggestions about how to improve the photographs. These will be passed on to the photographer. Raffle: Tonight s raffle prizes are provided by Hobby Works, in Rockville. O.S. Max.46 LA was won by Gus Ladas Hangar 9 Expanded Scale Volt Meter was won by Bob Aberman Model SPORT Video Magazine videocassette was won by Don Gray (Continued on page 5) BY MIKE PEIZER The meeting was called to order by Jim McDaniel at 7:12 PM at the home of Scott Davies. In attendance were Jeff Mervis, Walt Gallaugher, Scott Davies, Andy Finizio, Jim McDaniel, Fred Nielsen, Kevin Jackson, Michael Peizer, Andy Kane and Mike Dooley. Jim mentioned to Andy Kane the pictures of the board on the back of the newsletter. Andy replied that s why he s moving. Next Jim reminded the Board it is time to renew the liability policy for the Directors and Officers of DC/RC. In this day and age, in the world we live in it is only prudent to have such coverage. Jeff Mervis moved to continue the insurance coverage. Walt seconded. The motion was passed unanimously. Ralph Prior, The Deputy Director of Recreation for Montgomery County Parks is retiring in March. He has been a friend of the club for many years and has gone out of his way to help us many, many times. Ted Wroth will be taking over for Ralph. There will be a three way meeting between Ralph, Ted and Jim sometime in the near future. Ted is aware of the relationship DC/RC has with the county and kindly disposed toward us. Ralph is a good friend to DC/RC and he will be missed. Jim has received a reply from the county about the noise complaint filed by a near by resident. The county is asking us to keep track of who uses the field and when. The key to our success in staying at this site is to maintain the sound requirements and the hours of operation. The noise issue could delay the building of the gazebo and any tree work. After much discussion the Board agreed the club is in complete compliance with all the stipulations and regulations the county has set forth. Andy Finizio suggested that the club continue to reduce the sound levels whenever possible. The Board asked the Field Committee to study the issue and come to some conclusions and make a report at the next Board meeting. Fred Marks has been inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame. We have had a couple of requests for the club to acknowledge Fred s accomplishment. The Board agreed to acknowledge Fred s accomplishment in an appropriate way. Andy Finizio suggested we change the agenda at the general meetings and present the program before we do the business. Jim replied he tries to get through the business quickly and then go on to the program. This order assures the most members for the actual business, which is an important part of the club meetings. Jim also said he accommodates guest presenters when they come to do a program. Scott suggested we let the person in charge of the program make the decision about the agenda. The Board agreed with Scott s suggestion. Reports Treasurer: Scott Davies gave the president a written report for January, There was one expense over $ for postage for the newsletter. Newsletter/Membership: Andy Kane reported 20 extra newsletters were printed and distributed this month. The March newsletter will be abbreviated because Andy will be out of town. As membership secretary Andy reported 178 paid members so far this year. Flight Instruction: Kevin Jackson is going to write a letter of thanks for the trainer Fred Marks donated to the club. We need to begin to scout for flight training personnel for the next training year. The web site is in the process of being transferred. Access to the domain name will arrive any day now. Kevin is going to set up an (Continued on page 5)
PAGE 4 FEBRUARY 2002 Sound and Safety Corner BY WALT GALLAUGHER Flight Training at the Field BY ANDY KANE The noise issue seems to never go away. I am convinced that most people living near a model airfield complain about the pitch of the sound not necessarily just how loud it is. This offers a huge challenge to the model aviation community because the sound reduction has to be significant enough to make the noise generated by the airplanes imperceptible to the neighbors. To reach this level of sound reduction, the model aviation industry has to change the way the kits, engines, props and accessories are integrated. The current generation of pattern planes offer a good road map to improvements. There are three areas that standout in my mind as the reason that pattern planes are so quiet. Realistically, it is hard to hear the engine of a pattern plane in flight. If you do hear them, the sound is much more muffled and not so whiney. First, pattern planes have incorporated baffled tuned pipe technology to control the noise from the engine exhaust. We all know that a 4- stroke glow engine with a tuned pipe is very quite. From what I have heard, the same is true for 2-stroke glow engines as well. Pattern plane manufactures have incorporated the use of tuned pipes into their kit designs. The pipes are completely concealed within the fuselage. Sports, aerobatic, and scale plane manufactures should start designing their kits to incorporate tuned pipes or canisters as well. It is extremely difficult to modify a fuselage for a tuned pipe that wasn t designed for one in the first place. Tuned pipes should be included with the engines when purchased. ARF trainers should have tuned pipes right out of the box. If tuned pipes were widely adopted, the extra cost would be negligible. The second reason I believe pattern planes are quiet is that they use vibration isolating engine mounts. The most popular and effective is the Hyde Soft Mount. The use of the Hyde Soft Mount prevents noise due to vibration being transmitted from the engine to the fuselage. The only problem with these mounts is that they are fairly expensive. The final reason that pattern planes are so quiet is that they use engines that supply more torque at lower RPMs. This prompted the switch from 2 stroke to 4 stroke engines. Lately, I have noticed manufactures changing the bore and stroke to offer high torque 2-stroke glow engines to the pattern plane community. Increasing the torque at lower RPMs allows one to use a larger prop which reduces prop noise. We have found that lowering the prop RPM significantly reduces the noise generated by the larger gas powered engines. The large IMAC gas powered planes are moving to incorporate either tuned pipes or canisters to reduce the engine exhaust noise. They are also adopting 3-bladed props to reduce the prop noise. These two changes result in major sound reduction for these planes. Getting back to my original point, we have to find ways to make our planes quieter but also make the sound less annoying. Most of the attention is always given to the loudest of the planes. Pattern planes use to be among the loudest, now they are among the quietest. Large scale gas powered IMAC planes are currently in the process of addressing this issue. These groups changed because they had to to survive. In many ways I think the model aviation community has missed the point. All planes, big or small, gas or glow, 4-stroke or 2-stroke should be difficult to hear in flight. Any noise that is generated should have a tone that is not whiney and annoying. Until the community wakes up to this realization, model airplane clubs will continue to receive complaints or worse. The technology exists, but it is also up to the industry to adopt and make it readily available to the model aviation community to easily incorporate into the models. Saturday, January 12, 2002 turned out to be a beautiful day, The Wootton Aeronautics club had planned a field trip that day and the weather did really cooperate. The DCRC Club had both of its demonstrators at the field and the aero club showed up with 12 new pilots. They had never flown an RC plane and all very anxious to get at the controls. Having 12 new green pilots at the field was a challenge in itself, but we made it through. Thanks to the help of Kevin Jackson, Jim McDaniel, Doug Harper, Charlie Calvert, Fred Nielsen, Jeff Mervis, Ed Chidakel, Terry Lamb, Walt Gallaugher, David Fepelstein, Scott Davies, Andy Finizio. The Wootton Aero Club members present were: David Chen, Daniel Change, Stephen Gao, Andrew Huang, Michael Lee, Chris Innis, Peter Zhang, Fei Teng, Kathy Cheng, Bhararth Tois, and Mom s Anne Gao and Ruth Lee. Look for these young flyers this season. Wootton High School Aeronautics Club Jim McDaniel giving great instruction on the club buddy box
FEBRUARY 2002 PAGE 5 (Continued from page 3) Model Shop: Walt Gallaugher showed his 1.20 size Hangar 9 Edge 540 ARF equipped with an OS stroke gas engine. It will be his practice plane. He was really disappointed in the fit of some of the assemblies. Walt is also experimenting with NiMH batteries. From what he has read they are becoming more popular for receiver and transmitter use. He also showed a new way to make control rods from aluminum tubing, which is tapped for threaded rod. Program: Scott Davies introduced Tim Marks who gave a presentation on the new FMA product called Co-Pilot. Tim is very excited and proud to talk about the new aircraft stabilization system. There are four infrared sensors looking out in four directions that pick out the horizon. The Co-Pilot is always trying to keep the plane level so the pilot winds up actually steering the aircraft around the sky. Tim said it is like a video game when the sensitivity is set high. The sensitivity of the Co-pilot can be adjusted. Bill Creitz, a technical writer and member of DCRC, spent a lot of time writing the manual which is clear and concise. Tim Marks said it is the best manual he has ever read for an R/ C product. The co-pilot can be installed on a helicopter. In calm conditions you can hover hands off! Tim showed how the Co-Pilot is installed in a fixed wing aircraft. Then he demonstrated its operation and how to do the setup and calibration. Fred Marks came up front and asked Kevin Jackson to come and join him. He then presented the demonstration aircraft, radio and Co-Pilot to the club to be used in flight training. Fred said the response they have gotten from the Co-pilot is the best he has ever seen in all his years in RC. FMA has other projects in the works. They are working on an 8 model memory transmitter that is extremely simple to program. They are working on a very powerful digital servo. Poquito is a 2 oz park flyer/indoor flyer under development. The last thing he mentioned was a true fail-safe receiver in combination with Co- Pilot. The meeting was adjourned at 10:02PM. MUSEUM TOUR DCRC is sponsoring a tour of the Paul Garber facility of the Air and Space Museum in late March of this year. A March 23 or 30 date and a 10 AM start time have been requested. When confirmation of one of these dates has been received it will be announced in the Newsletter. The tour will be open to DCRC members, their family and friends. The tour lasts 3 hours. The Garber facility is where the restoration work is done for the Air and Space Museum. In addition to touring the site where the actual restoration work is done we will visit some of the buildings housing planes that have been restored and those waiting to be restored. The tour will be conducted by docents who will be providing commentaries on the various planes in the collection. One of the nice features of this facility is that you will be able to get real close to all of the planes unlike the National Air and Space museum on the Mall. So, make time on your schedules for this tour as it will be well worth it. You will have to reserve a spot for this tour. Contact Ron Bozzonetti on or ronbozl@juno.com to let him know how many people will be in your group. (Continued from page 3) address for each member of the Board. Kevin mentioned he went into Hobby Works recently and one of the people who works there stopped him and said the way DCRC treats the helicopter guys is not good. They are also considering rescinding the DCRC discount. The Board is continuing to work on the helicopter flyer participation issue. The DCRC discount issue at Hobby Works will be checked out as well. Sound & Safety: Walt Gallaugher reported he will write a letter to the county outlining DCRC stand on the issue of unsafe R/C flying near SoccerPlex. He will make it clear DCRC members are not involved in this, and we advocate putting a stop to this unsafe practice. The corner marker will go up in the Spring. Walt asked about the aerial maps and when he can expect to see them. Jim said they will come in their own good time. Field Maintenance: Mike Dooley brought the Board up to date on the issue of new tables for the field. Jeff Mervis is going to ask a contractor he knows if he would build the tables. He should know something soon. New Business: Walt asked for any additional program ideas. Next Walt brought up the issue of access to a video/lcd projector. At least a few times a year one is needed for presentations at the general club meetings. He suggested maybe we should think about buying one for the club. Mike Peizer will research the acquisition of an LCD projector. Andy Kane recounted his experiences in Florida last weekend at a judging seminar conducted by the TOC judge, Fred Johnson. He was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the seminar. He thought it was very informative. Rob Sarlan and Andy are planning to do a similar judging seminar this spring in this area. The JR Challenge is going to be a big event. Andy has over forty competitors preregistered. IMAC knows they have a sound problem and they are doing something about it. The sound measurement protocol stipulates the sound level be measured at 25 feet from the engine in line with the prop. The limit is 96 dba over grass and 98 dba over pavement. An added point system will be devised for those who do better than the stated maximums. Kevin found a firm in Texas that refurbishes and sells sound measuring equipment for a fraction of the new cost. In light of the current sound complaint, he suggested the club consider buying a sound level meter, to ascertain without a doubt, the day-to-day sound levels our flying produces. The model the Texas firm sells is the same model the county used to measure the sound levels at the field. Walt moved that Kevin be authorized to spend up to $ to buy a high quality refurbished sound meter. Mike Dooley seconded the motion. The motion was passed unanimously. 6 PAGE 6 FEBRUARY 2002 CESSNA/ONR STUDENT DESIGN/BUILD/FLY COMPETITION BY ROY DAY Each year Cessna Aircraft and the Office of Naval Research sponsor a college student competition in the design, build and fly of a model aircraft. Each college puts together a team of about eight to fifteen engineering students who have the experience of writing a proposal, then a design report, building an aircraft to the parameters set for that year and finally competing it a flight competition. Each team may have an advisor but the students have to do all the work. Each team earns points for each phase of the project. Cash prizes are $2500 for first place, $1500 for second place and $l000 for third place. The flying competition is held in April of each year alternately at Cessna Wichita and the Pautaxent Naval Air Station which was the site for I had the opportunity to work as a Technical Inspector for the April 2001 flying competition at Pax River. Twenty-two teams from Oklahoma State University (Black Team). OSU flew this sleek plane of carbon fiber and foam to 3rd place. A similar plane entered by the OSU-Orange Team took first place in the competition. amount of payload carried on each sortie. A sortie requires a takeoff within 200 feet, fly around a pylon, do a 360, round the downwind pylon, land on the runway and roll to a stop. Two types of payloads must be carried: a "weight payload" consisting of steel blocks and a "volume payload" made up of tennis colleges in the US, Canada and Turkey flew at Pax River. The flight scores are determined by the number of sorties flown in a 10 minute period and the A clean airplane designed by Cal Poly also made of carbon fiber and foam for the flying surfaces. They placed 2nd in overall points. balls. The team declares in advance of their flight how much payload of each type they will carry. The two payloads are carried on alternative sorties, i.e., one sortie with the weight payload and the next with the volume payload. Change out of payload is only allowed when the aircraft has come to a full stop. Since the object is to make as many sorties as possible in the ten minutes, each sortie is flown as efficiently as possible and the change out of payload must be done quickly. Usually the An unusual configuration from Utah State that took 5th place. It's sort of a cross between a lifting body and a flying wing (with a tail). It was a beautiful flyer and very fast. payload bay has a quick release and both types of payload are fitted in an identical carrier which slips handily into the payload bay. Once the aircraft has rolled to a stop, the ground crew of two races to it with the alternate payload and quickly does the change out. Only when the ground crew has returned to their "box", is the pilot allowed to begin his takeoff roll. The change out is something to see--usually done in about 10 seconds. This entry from Queen's College, Canada, was the only ducted fan. Beautiful airplane that flew well but unfortunately stalled and crashed rounding the downwind pylon. All of these aircraft are electric powered so unless the power is efficiently managed the flight duration is shortened and lower points are earned. The configuration is open to the design team as long as the broad parameters are met which have been set in advance for the competition. The 2001 competition had biplanes, high and low wing monoplanes, a lifting body type and a ducted fan. The aircraft may have single or multimotors. The major design parameters were: 1. Maximum wingspan of 10 feet. (Naturally, all designs had wingspans of 10 feet) 2. Electric powered using commercially available Astro or Graup ner brush motors 3. Motors are limited to maximum of 40 amps current draw motors, usually in the 60 to 90 sizes. All types of construction were used: foam, balsa, fiberglass, carbon fiber. The teams with the final top three scores were: 1. Oklahoma State University -Orange Team 2. Cal Poly 3. Oklahoma State University - Black Team The flying competition for 2002 will be held at Cessna Wichita, Kansas. It will return to Pax River in What's that old saying about "a good looking airplane usually fly s good". Well, this ugly "Monster" from the Naval Academy sure didn't fly well. They crashed it on the first day, repaired it overnight and crashed it again on the second day. Here is a biplane from the University of Arizona that is certainly no beauty b u t i t f l e w w e l l. 4. Over the counter Ni- Cad batteries must be used; max weight of battery pack is 5 pounds. 5. Pilot and aircraft must be AMA legal. Aircraft weight must be less than 55 pounds. 6. Team must present proof that the aircraft has flown, photo or video. This an excellent learning experience for these engineering students. The photos show some of the variety of aircraft flown.
FEBRUARY 2002 PAGE 7 (Continued from page 2) fairplay and shall take and authenticate the time measurements. Each scrutinizer shall use a digital stopwatch. The scrutinizers shall have the power to call a foul where the guidelines have been breached or the duration cannot be reasonably or feasibly measured. Ten attempts at the record are allowed. A foul shall be recorded as an attempt but shall not be valid for setting the record. Attempts declared or rendered void under guideline 7 below shall not be recorded as an attempt. The aircraft must be constructed from one sheet of paper only (using either a sheet of A4 or 81/2 inch x 11 inch quarto sized paper). The weight of paper must be no more than 100 gsm. The paper can be cut, but any piece of paper cut off cannot be rejoined. The use of standard light-duty clear cellulose adhesive tape of width 25 mm and total length 30 mm is permitted on any one aircraft. The tape may be cut up into smaller pieces but shall be used to hold down folds only and shall not be layered, joined together, used as a weight, used for laminating a surface nor used as a control device such as a trim-tab or flap. Glue, paperclips or staples are not permitted. The aircraft must be launched by one person (the thrower) throwing the aircraft unaided from a reasonably static position. A run-up or fast walk as part of the launch is not permitted, nor the use of ramps or like devices. The thrower must endeavor to keep both feet on the ground during the launch. The aircraft must not be launched from a balcony or any other area that is higher than the main floor level. The launch height is dependent upon the height of the thrower. Reasonably flat footwear must be used. The floor on which the thrower stands during the launch must be level with or lower than the point where it first lands. The aircraft must not go below the main floor level and then rise again, for example by flying down into a pit or basement area and up again to the main floor level. The duration shall be measured by the scrutinizers from the point in time when the aircraft leaves the thrower's hand to the point in time when the aircraft first touches the floor or is subject to guideline 8. The duration record shall be measured to a tenth of a second but scrutinizers stopwatches shall measure to a hundredth of a second and times shall be rounded up or down in accordance with the following example: times from to seconds round down to 20.9 seconds; to round up to 21.0 seconds. The scrutinizers each shall compare their times measured to determine jointly a fair or average time. Where the average of two time measurements generates a time to two decimal places, the time shall be rounded up or down in accordance with the above example. If the two scrutinizers cannot agree on a fair or average time, then the time shall be disallowed and the throw shall be void as an attempt. If the aircraft hits any object such as a wire, lighting etc. during the flight, the duration should only be recorded until the point of contact. Additionally, should any object, flying or fixed, benefit the aircraft in flight, or is deemed so to do by a scrutinizer, that scrutinizer shall call a foul. It only requires one scrutinizer to call a foul; with the attempt being counted and time stopped or lost. So specifically, to paper size, 8.5 x11 inches is acceptable. Ten attempts are allowed in any one day. As to venue, given that for authentication purposes the media is required, i.e. press and TV, their attendance is likely. The venue needs to be accessible in this way. It also needs to be accessible to the independent witnesses. For you information, our new address is as follows: Guinness Publishing 8th Floor 338 Euston Road London NW1 3BD The World Record Paper Airplane Book: In 1992 on a ski trip with my friend Jeff Lammers, we were discussing possible projects. I had started research on writing a book (thanks to my sister, Jackie Tyson). We decided to give it a go. I did most of the writing and plane designs, Jeff organized it, created illustrations and art work, and found a publisher. In 1993 Workman Publishing signed us to a contract and more work started to polish the book. The book came out in June 1994, and has sold over 750,000 by the summer of Its available at most book stores, and at many national store chains, like May stores. I understand it has a display at the gift store at the Smithsonian (I always wanted to have a plane of my own design there - but thought it might be a little larger). The Kids' Paper Airplane Book was introduced the fall of '96, with sales to date (10/98) of 230,000. This draws on experience from the first book, and has planes, games, and educational activities specifically for kids A teachers guide is available from the publisher for this book to help schools and youth groups prepare educational and fun activities. New paper airplane stuff A new Book - Pocket Flyers - should now be in a store near you. A 1/2 size book with 1/2 size paper airplanes calendar is finished and in stores, and work has begun on the 2000 paper airplane calendar.
