Kane Technical Information/Cooling Your Machine This is the business end of our 40% Extra W150B2SS. You can notice the baffles that have been added for better air flow too and over the cylinders. Always remember, you must make the air go where you want it to go. Otherwise, it will take the easiest route in and out of the cowl. It will cool your mufflers great but will bypass the cylinders or give them very little cooling, at the most. Everyone has an idea how to cool. Just ask or look around at your local field. Everyone is an expert. What I am showing you in the photo is the same way full scale aircraft engines are cooled. It is a misconception that you just put a ring around the cyl.'s from the air intake holes. All this will do is again, let the air take the easiest route out of the cowl. It is imperative that you cool these engines in high heat maneuvers (Torque Rolls, hovering and other 3D flight). With correct baffling, you can lower your engine temp by as much as 100 deg.! The material you use is not important. In an emergency at a meet I have used anything from cardboard to 1/16" balsa. I do suggest using 1/16" balsa, light cloth, glassing it (laminating epoxy) and painting for good looks. On the 3W you will need to bring the horizontal baffle 1/4 above the port at the base of the cyl. but no more than 1/2. You will glue this baffle at the front (bottom) of the air intake on the cowl. It will be brought back to within 1/16" of the fins. Making sure you cannot see through the fins but only see the barrel of the cylinder. It will extend from the crankcase where the structural webbing is all the way out to the cheek of the cowl. Next, you will take a piece of 1/16" balsa and go vertical from the very top of the cowl (enclosing the cheek to the spark plug but not over the cooling fins on the top of the cyl.). These fins are functional and help cool the cyl's. This piece of balsa will be at about a 20 deg. angle depending on aircraft style (cowl). It will be glued to the horizontal piece. Keep in mind, you do not want the air to escape under the fins. You will use the top of the cowl as the top of your air box. Doing theses simple steps will make your engine a happy camper and not so prone to over heat and quit at a most inopportune time.

3 December 2002 District of Columbia Radio Control Club Page 3 The Club meeting was called to order by DCRC president Jim McDaniel at 8:05 PM. Guests: Several members of the Local 4H Aeronautics Club. New members: Frank Meer, who is still learning to fly. Jim s opening remarks recapped the election results of the last meeting. At the last meeting the members voted to reelect all the outgoing Board members who were running for re-election. Some of the committee assignments and other jobs were changed at the last Board meeting to distribute the workload and thereby increase efficiency. Treasurer: Scott Davies reviewed the budget items for last year for the benefit of the members present. Walt Gallaugher audited the books for the last fiscal year and found everything to be in good order. The club has done very well from a fiscal standpoint. Many of the events either broke even or made a little money. This is rather unusual for a club like ours, and is due in no small part to careful management by certain Board members and event organizers. Andy Kane has saved the club a large amount of money with his skillful handling of events and by finding ways to cut costs for producing the newsletter. Walt mentioned the raffle prizes Andy Kane has procured at no cost from Hobby Works, FMA and Doug s Hobby Shop. Once again, this has made a big difference to our bottom line. Newsletter/Membership: Andy Kane reported we have 100 renewals at this time. We are well on the way to signing up 250 dues paying members again this year. The member roster will be mailed out with the membership renewals. Andy is again, taking pictures for membership cards. The newsletter is going well. Flight Instruction: Kevin Jackson reported flight training has been a victim of its own success. We usually have twenty students or more at a training session. Kevin wanted to thank all those who helped out with flight instruction this year. We plan to do it all again next year so please plan to help out as often as you can. Michael Peizer added we will be acquiring three new training aircraft, and new support equipment. We have chosen the Hangar 9 Alpha Trainer. Sound & Safety: Walt Gallaugher reported new more accurate sound meters will be purchased for the club very soon. Kevin Jackson and Michael Peizer have been researching which sound meters to purchase and are close to a decision. Events: Andy Finizio said he should have all the dates for next year s events set sometime after Christmas. New Business: Walt will be coordinating the programs for the meetings again next year. He really needs your help in putting together new programs that are fresh and interest- by Mike Peizer ing. If you have an idea for a program please let Walt know. Old Business: Jim said he is amazed and pleased at how well this club operates. Last month, Paul Savage contacted Jim and said he wanted to make a gift of an airplane to a worthy individual or organization. He wanted Jim s advice. DCRC is currently working with a couple of schools and at least one organization, so the decision is not an easy one. Jim and Paul decided to donate the plane to the 4H Aeronautics Club. Joseph McDaniel, Rachel Harris and her son, Ryan, Willie Harrington, and his dad, Pete were all present to accept the airplane. Paul Savage came forward and presented a beautiful Sig Kadet Senior to the 4H group. Jim publicly thanked Paul for his very generous gift. Raffle: Tonight s raffle prizes were furnished by FMA Direct An FMA R/C System, complete with servos, receiver, transmitter and batteries was won by Scott Davies who immediately donated it to the 4H group. An FMA Micro Flight Pack was won by someone who got away before I could get a name. A Magnum 8 receiver was won by Scott Davies who decided to keep it this time. An Xtreme 5 receiver was won by Fred Nielsen An FMA Einstein XL Battery Charger/Cycler was won by David Harris An FMA Razor 400 Kit was won by Walt Gallaugher A Great Planes Accuthrow control surface deflection meter was won by someone else who got away. Model Shop: Todd and Matt Butler showed an Armadillo Sport.40. It was easy to build and is supposed to be very crash resistant. Next, Zack Baum showed a Cap sized model. It s not quite finished but should be done in about a week. Zack thinks it will be underpowered with the current engine. That can be taken care of at a later time. David Harris showed an SE-5 by Top Flight. It is a very old kit, which he had lying around. He started it in 1999 and finished it in It is powered by an OS.48 four stroke engine. The wingspan is 53 inches and it flies great! Bob Aberman showed an FMA Razor with an interesting story to go with it. It flew away from the old Gude Drive flying site a few months ago. Today at about 2:00 PM Bob got a call from HobbyWorks telling him they had his Razor. Someone had found it and brought it to the store. The engine is a mess but everything else seems to work. Bob added a bit to Jim s assessment of the club by saying in the 60 s the people in the club were as helpful and dedicated and friendly a bunch as they are today. Fallilou Sylla has a.40 powered plane and other equipment and tools he is selling because he is traveling too much to get up to the field. Anyone interested can pick up a (Continued on page 4)

4 Page 4 District of Columbia Radio Control Club December 2002 (Continued from page 3) flyer after the meeting. Program: Andy Kane presented a slide show of pictures he had taken at the 2002 Tournament of Champions held in Las Vegas, NV. The meeting was adjourned at 9:53 PM.~ The Board meeting was called to order by Jim McDaniel at 7:10 PM at the home of Walt Gallaugher. In attendance were Mike Dooley, Scott Davies, Jim McDaniel, Andy Kane, Walt Gallaugher, Jeff Mervis, Andy Finizio, Kevin Jackson and Michael Peizer. Jim started the meeting by asking each member what he wants/needs/desires for the club in Andy Finizio wants a new kinder gentler safety fence that won t tear up airplanes as much if they should hit it. He also would like to see it moved back about twenty feet from where the safety fence is now. Jeff Mervis wants a gazebo. Jim said it is in the pipeline as part of the recreational improvement budget. Mike Dooley wants to construct a bench or tables at the back of the shelters. Newsletter: Walt asked about distributing the newsletter on CD ROM. That way the current year s newsletters could be archived on each CD sent out. That would result in an additional savings on printing if we could get 70 or 80 more members to accept the newsletter on CD ROM. The Board will study this suggestion. Kevin suggested zipping the newsletter to save space. This is a method of compressing the information in the newsletter so it takes up less space and downloads faster. It would download in half the time of the current pdf. format. The Board agreed this was a good thing to try. Sound & Safety: Walt said there is a rumor circulating that individuals have been deputized to keep an eye on people flying at the field. No one has been deputized and there are no field marshals at Walt Good field. It is the responsibility of every member to be sure that operations are conducted in a safe manner, period. We all need to fly safely in order to keep our flying site. Kevin Jackson passed around literature on the sound meters we propose to buy. Sound levels at the field will be a continuing issue. The ability to take accurate sound measurements is vital if the club intends to continue operations at the field. The meters Kevin and Michael Peizer recommend cost about $14.00 more than the Board authorized. Both meters are very accurate, and one of them can log measurements and download them to a PC later. After some discussion the Board decided to buy two of the logging meters with National Institute of Science and Technology certification. Scott Davies moved we amend the amount we can spend on sound meters to no more than $1, Jeff Mervis seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Events: Andy Finizio asked the Board if they wanted to have County Appreciation Day on a Saturday or a Sunday. Andy prefers Saturday because those who attend can stay around longer and not worry about going to work the next day. Saturday June 21st is the tentative date. Opening Day is Saturday April 26 th. Bealeton is scheduled for August 22,23 & 24 th. OctoberFest is Sunday October 5 th. Andy Finizio asked if we wanted to do a war-bird event in July or early August. It could be open to war-birds of any size. The Board will consider the question. The idea of a flea market was discussed. Andy Finizio suggested that we have tables at one of the club events, maybe Opening Day. It is possible that one or two of these dates may change as information of other club s events becomes known, simply to maximize attendance. New Business: Kevin said that he was approached by a member of the Society of Technical Aeromodel Research. This is Maynard Hill s organization, which was founded to help fund his trans-atlantic flight attempt. They have lost their web space and are looking for someone to host the site. Kevin would like to roll the STAR website into the DCRC site. The STAR people would still be responsible for providing content. Maynard s continued attempt to cross the Atlantic with a remotely piloted model airplane is a potential landmark in R/ C history, and Kevin believes the club should support him whenever and wherever we can. Kevin moved we donate space on the DCRC website for STAR. Andy Finizio seconded the motion. The motion passed with one abstention. Walt Gallaugher asked Andy Kane if he would have a use for a color laser printer. Andy said it would be useful for badges, membership cards and other small items he prints out as membership secretary, and it might be useful for the newsletter. It turns out Andy uses his own printer and ink to print many things on behalf of the club. Outside of the expense for color ink jet cartridges, the resulting images smear easily if they get damp. There was much discussion comparing reimbursement vs. the cost of purchasing and operating an inexpensive laser printer. Jeff Mervis moved we authorize Andy Kane to purchase a color laser printer for the club. The cost is not to exceed $1, Kevin Jackson seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM.~~

5 December 2002 District of Columbia Radio Control Club Page 5 A Single Wing Biplane By Bob Yount In the history of Aviation a lot of wild designs have been attempted. Many were total failures and there were a few which actually worked but were never really implemented. The Russian NIKITIN-SEVCHENKO IS-1 is an example of the latter. In 1939 the designers were trying to combine the maneuverability of the bipe with the speed of a monoplane. This effort resulted in the design shown in the illustrations. The quite normal looking biplane was fitted with an 1100 h.p. radial engine had a top speed of about 285 m.p.h. and 180 m.p.h. in its two configurations. The IS-1 wasn t large with a 28.6ft wingspan. The idea worked but it was considered to complicated to maintain in the field. In operation, the inboard section of the lower wing, with the retracted gear, folded into a recess in the side of the fuselage. The remaining portion of the lower wing fit into a recess in the top wing. The pilot must have had an exciting time while all of this transition was taking place. Certainly the airflow over the tail surfaces must have been turbulent enough to make for some unstable moments. 6 Page 6 District of Columbia Radio Control Club December 2002 THE GOOD STUFF By Don Gray Too Good To Be True? Last year I was flying an oldtime (1938) model called the Kloud King. Some of you may recall seeing it towing the American flag at the 2001 Oktoberfest. Well, one afternoon while flying it and doing a series of inside loops, I lost all radio contact [I ain t got it!!!]. The model first appeared to go into a stall and then started doing OUTSIDE loops all on its own and above the line of famous trees. The loops slowly kept getting lower and lower as the model drifted eastward behind the trees and toward the creek. But as the model disappeared behind the trees, I could still hear the engine rpm undulating up and down as in a loop. I stood still and waited to hear the dreaded crash and echoing sound of balsa wood being ripped into smaller pieces by trees or mother earth. Well, to my surprise, there were no crashing sounds. Instead, the engine began to run at a constant rpm. As I started down the bank, I looked at my stopwatch and figured that there was enough fuel for about another five minutes. After crossing the creek, I took a bearing on the engine noise and soon ended up in the sticker bushes. My pace slowed at that point as I moved closer to the location where the engine was heard. Finally, I could see the model setting upright in the sticker bushes with engine running and the prop making light contact with a sapling! I pinched off the fuel line to stop the engine. I could not believe that this potential flyaway ended up the way it did. It took several attempts to remove the model from the sticker bushes. But, after looking it over, there was no real damage to the structure or covering! The cause of the problem was the battery pack was not securely fastened down, came loose, disconnected and ended up in the aft end of the fuselage. Wishing happy holidays and great new year to one and all!
