3 Page 3 DCRC October Club Meeting BY DOUG HARPER The meeting, held at the County Office Building, was called to order by President Jim McDaniel at 7:37 PM. Jim asked for the introduction of any new members or guests. None were present. Jim took the opportunity to present a "State of the Club" assessment. Jim, though not personally in County politics, was very involved in issues surrounding Boyd's, where he lives. He then became President of the Boyd's Civic Assn where he was heavily involved in many Boyd's issues around a quarry and then a landfill. Neither every happened and Jim by then had developed a close relationship with key County people including the director of Maryland Capital Park and Planning. As the County started to develop what is now South Germantown Park and Soccerplex, we needed to move to another flying location. Our current McMap location had been a designated model airpark location for many years but there was not money to build out the facilities. Many of our Club members worked with the County to configure the field but things were not moving too quickly. Fortunately, there was a way found, with much credit to Jim's connection with the County, to support building our current, world class model airpark. There were many complications, not the least of which was the fact that our field sits squarely between two streams that feed into the Bay. In spite of this, we received overwhelming support from Montgomery County to complete our current facility. Jim is very proud of what was accomplished for DCRC and we can all thank him for the fine facility we have today. We all agree it is one of the finest model facilities we have seen. Jim finished by asserting that our Club and flying facility are in fine shape and we should be proud. He also reinforced that we are fiscally sound as a Club. County Liaison: No report. Events: Octoberfest was a great success again this year. Food was outstanding and a nice crowd was present. Many thanks to Andy Kane for cooking. Jose announced that he plans to manage the holiday party again this year and would like all to let him know if they are coming. There will be a "gift exchange" again this year. Training/Community Outreach : Joe Pauley reported that tomorrow is the last flight training session of the year (if enough instructors show up). Field Maintenance: Gate lock has been lubed and seems to be working well. Dave Garrison reported that our solar chargers have served 29,000 amp hours. Membership: Jose Sanchez is collecting dues. He will certainly accept checks but would prefer members to use PayPal. Safety Coordinator: Walt Gallaugher had no report. Raffle: Doug Hinken has a Viking Model 12 BNF biplane (donated by David Garrison) as well as a Duet RTF (donated by Andy Kane) for tonight's raffle. The winning ticket was held by Talia Jambi who is all of 5 years old. She promised to have the plane in the air next week. Steve Davis won the second kit and received an appropriate recognition. Treasure s Report: Doug wrote three checks in excess of $100 this month. He had a copy of the YTD Budget Report for anyone who cared to see it. Web Site: Jose Sanchez. No report. Newsletter: No report. New/Old Business: Andy Kane reported that DCRC received the AMA Award of Excellence again this year. This comes with a patch for each member. Jim announced that tonight was election of new Board Members. There was a quorum present to support tonight's election. Jim then asked the candidates for the Board if they would like to say a few words. Jose Sanchez went first and indicated that he has been on the Board for 6 years. He would like to continue helping the Club in areas like the web page, membership, and flight training. He also felt all the candidates are worthy of the job. Jim Fisher indicated that he has gone through some scheduling issues this past year but feels he will be able to come back to help the Club in the future. Joe Pauley has been a member for 5 or 6 years and has been active in the Club as flight instructor and as ground crew for flight training. He is also assistant Sound and Safety officer. Bob Sparks has been a member for a little over a year and has been very active in Club events. He feels he is in a position to help the Club and has the time to do it. Guy Riso has been in the Club for 5 or so years. He is very active in flight training, especially in the ground support and construction and maintenance of Club trainers. He is willing to take on any job the Club asks him to do. Doug Hinken has been in the Club for about 5 years and graduated from the flight training program. He has found our Club to be very supportive of his efforts to learn to fly. He enjoys the hobby and has been active in flight training support. He is willing to help in any way needed. Jim McDaniel reinforced the idea that we have an excellent group of members running this year for the Board and the Club appreciates their willingness to run. He also stressed the idea that, all members can help by supporting Club activities, even those not on the Board. Jim announced the election of the following members to three year terms on the Board: Guy Riso, Jose Sanchez, Bob Sparks. Jim announced that there will be a Board Meeting at his house next Wednesday. Model Shop: Tonight's model shop was presented by Walt Gallaugher who presented his Hangar 9 32cc Ultra Stick finished in beautiful green and white. He installed an OS gas engine in it for power. He has been moving the batteries around to get the proper CG and finds it flies very well. Walt added carbon rod reinforcements to between the horizontal and vertical stab just to be sure the plane could take aggressive maneuvers. He also installed the tail servos in the back rather than in the middle of the fuse. The wings are set up for "crow" to aid in certain maneuvers. He likes this plane a great deal. Walt also showed some very fancy wing bags (procured by Andy Kane) that perfectly matched the color of the plane. The meeting adjourned at 9:30PM.

4 DCRC October Board Meeting BY DOUG HARPER The meeting, held at the shop of Walt Gallaugher, was called to order by President Jim McDaniel at 7:06 PM. In attendance were Jim McDaniel, Walt Gallaugher, Andy Kane, Doug Harper, Guy Riso, Ed Leibolt, Bob Sparks, John Petley, Jose Sanchez, David Garrison and guest Allan Hoffman. Many thanks to Walt who provided light fare for the board members as well as a wonderful venue for the meeting (a well stocked model airplane shop). Jim welcomed previous board member Allan Hoffman to tonight's meeting. He also recognized the contribution of past board members Andy Finizio and Jim Fisher for all their contributions over many years. Committee Reports: Public Relations & County Liaison: Jim McDaniel Sound & Safety: Walt Gallaugher Field Maintenance: David Garrison Flight Instruction/Awards: Jim Fisher Events: No report. Treasurer: Doug Harper reported that he wrote three checks over $100 in the last month. He presented a YTD Budget report to the Board for their consideration. Doug also presented the tentative 2018 DCRC budget that was approved by the 2017 board last month. After much discussion, the 2018 board unanimously approved the budget. Membership: Jose Sanchez. No report. Newsletter: Andy Kane. No report. Web Master: Jose Sanchez.. No report. Old Business/New Business: Jim welcomed new board members Guy Riso and Bob Sparks to the board as well as the return of Jose Sanchez for another three year term. Jim then proceeded to accept nominations for officers for the coming year. The current President, Jim McDaniel, was nominated for President as well as Walt Gallaugher for VP, Jose Sanchez for Membership Sec'y and Doug Harper a s T r e a s - urer/recording Sec'y. All accepted and the vote was unanimous. Jim then went around the room so that each board members could indicate which duties they would like to do in the coming year. John Petley and Ed Leibolt indicated an interest in flight training with Ed as the lead and John as his assistant. Ed indicated that he will call a planning meeting to hash out the Flight Training for next year. David Garrison will continue as Field Maintenance coordinator. Bob Sparks volunteered to be David's assistant. In addition, Bob agreed to phase into Membership Secretary with Jose's assistance. Jose Sanchez agreed to continue as Webmaster. Guy Riso agreed to take the Sound and Safety coordinator job with help from Joe Pauley. Andy Kane was asked to take on Events Coordinator, Page 4 which he agreed to, as well as continue as Newsletter Editor. Andy stated that he hopes to make DCRC events self sustaining except for Opening Day and Octoberfest. Bob Sparks agreed to take a look at club awards this year. Jim did note that we need to work at increasing participation at the club meetings and asked Walt Gallaugher to focus on that task as Meeting Program Coordinator. Jim will publish a list of assignments for the board's use. He also asked board members to select a meeting date where they will host the club meeting program. Andy Kane asked each board member to write a newsletter article about their duties on the board. He would like to publish these articles to help members understand what the board does for the DCRC club. Jim has secured the Soccerplex indoor flying site again this year from November thru February. The only blackout date is Dec 27. Jim received a request from a commercial UAS company who has asked if they could use our field to do some testing of their products. The board, after much discussion, decided this was well outside our MOU with the County and not something we want to get involved in. The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 PM..

5 Page 5 Applying Scale Aerobatic s to everyday flying By Andy Kane Excerpts from Article by David Scott I would like to pass along some information about scale aerobatic basic maneuvers. I have seen at the field more interest in learning aerobatic maneuvers and I have always believed that scale aerobatics is the gateway to improve your precision flying, whether its, trainers, foamies, warbirds or jets. This understanding can be very helpful to all pilots. One of the hardest maneuvers is WINGS-LEVEL ENTRIES A wings-level entry obviously ensures that the airplane will at least start out tracking vertically during looping maneuvers and prevent other maneuvers from initially veering off to one side. While I ve addressed the importance of wings-level entries before, it is so crucial to overall success that it cannot be overstressed. I can tell you that roughly 10 percent of the effort expended during any aerobatic training session is spent reinforcing the necessities of wings level entries and proper positioning. Another 10 percent of the time I m pointing out that the reason an attempt failed to go as planned was that one or both of those elements were neglected. Ultimately, those who learn to prioritize wings level entries and proper positioning prior to entering each maneuver avoid having to make a lot of corrections and, thus, use fewer brain bytes compared to those who loosely fly around. As a consequence, more attention can be paid to recognizing ways to further improve their maneuvers. Conversely, if the wings are not level at entry, you could try to correct during the maneuver. Progress will inevitably grind to a crawl, however, as a result of exhausting most of your brain bytes fiddling with the ailerons (Figure 1). Which would result with inconsistency it would also make it nearly impossible to identify the plane s tendencies in order to rapidly improve the maneuver, or it may even cause you to misdiagnose your plane s tendencies. In short, like everything else in life, it s far easier to do things the correct way and avoid problems than it is to try to correct them after the damage is done! Figure 1. a Loop Entering a loop without the wings level tilts the loop. Attempting to fix it puts the loop off - kilter and requires several additional adjustments to complete the loop on the original heading. In addition to greatly complicating the maneuver for little gain, the corrections tend to draw more attention than the original error, thus causing the loop to appear worse than if you would have simply performed a tilted loop. The solution is not to get better at fixing the deviation resulting from the wings not being level but, rather, to make certain that the wings are always level at entry. Figure 2. Maintaining a consistent parallel line back and forth reduces the number of corrections needed before, during, and after each maneuver. As a result, more attention can be paid to further improving the maneuvers. Start by picturing the comfortable viewing distance out in front of yourself where you would like to perform your center maneuvers. Then project that distance out to your left and right, parallel to the runway centerline, and pick some landmarks to mark your parallel turnaround points. Note: Whether the turnaround landmarks are directly below the airplane or miles away is not important. The objective of the landmarks is simply to have something to shoot for as the plane approaches the horizon to maintain consistency. Figure 3. Failing to start each maneuver along a consistent parallel line significantly increases the number and degree of corrections needed between attempts, and it hampers how many maneuvers can be attempted and abolishes consistency. Inconsistent positioning is, Half Cuban Eight Loop Half Cuban Eight

6 Page 6 therefore, chiefly responsible for the plateauing of the skills of many pilots. Parallel Positioning Consistent positioning plays a supremely important role in how easily and rapidly pilots improve. In fact, it is so instrumental that you could even get away with entering a maneuver without the wings level (not that you d want to), thanks to the wiggle room that proper positioning affords. Consider this: If the plane is positioned correctly when a maneuver is begun, a pilot can actually afford to make a mistake (e.g., input the wrong rudder) or encounter wind drift or turbulence and still complete it near the preferred path. Murphy s Law dictates, however, that if the plane is out of position and/or the wings are not level to start with, a pilot mistake or wind will quite often end up compounding the original flaw. It s a lot like when you become distracted while driving on a twolane road and the car starts to veer. It s not a problem as long as the car was in the middle of the lane to start with. It s a different story if the car starts veering left when it was already hugging the centerline (i.e., has no margin for error). In short, the single most important thing that you can do to ensure that each maneuver finishes on or close to the preferred flight path is to start the plane on the proper line to begin with (Figures 2 and 3). The first step is to walk out on the runway and survey your surroundings. Locate the landmarks in line with the extended centerline of the runway. Next, picture where you would like the airplane to pass out in front of you. With that as your starting point, visualize the plane s flight path back and forth parallel to the runway centerline. Then, identify some landmarks on the horizon in the areas where you intend to perform your turnaround maneuvers (e.g., half Cubans, Immelmanns, hammerheads, etc.). Once in the air, fly the airplane toward those landmarks, execute your turnaround maneuvers, and fly back to the same point in front of yourself. If you don t intend to perform an aerobatic turnaround, then, after the airplane passes out in front of you, fly wide of the parallel landmarks so that the subsequent turn will exit over the landmark and, thus, on a parallel track back out in front of you (Figure 4). As a result of prioritizing positioning, fewer corrections will be needed between maneuvers. Consequently, the plane will seem like it s flying slower and, therefore, afford you more time to reflect on the last attempt, anticipate the next maneuver, receive instruction, introduce more maneuvers, anticipate wind corrections, or simply relax. Furthermore, since the principal effect of wind is that it tends to exaggerate deviations, wind won t seem to affect your flying nearly as much as it used to.
