PHOTO BY JUNIOR LOPEZ D.O.G.S Show Dayton Ohio Giant Scaler s By Andy Kane This year I had the pleasure to attend the Dayton Ohio Giant scale fly in, located at the Wright Patterson Museum. What can I say, the weather was perfect, the flying site is wonderful, the Air force museum is educational and entertaining, and most of all the friendship between modelers lives on. The 420 mile trip to Dayton was very easy. We left MD at 5 am on Friday arrived at the field at 1 pm was able to get many hours of flying in. Dave McQueeny and Doug Harper also joined Junior Lopez and I at the event. In abundant attendance were IMAC style aerobatic planes and Giant Scale war birds. There were also the occasional turbine powered jet to take the skies and dazzle the crowds. I would guest-i-mate that on Friday thru Sunday there were over 15,000 spectators that came in to visit the model activity. With the model field located just behind the museum and within earshot of the museum parking lot, many attendees came thru the museum and then came over to check out the models. Demonstration Air shows were performed each day form noon till about 2 pm and many facets of the hobby were shown. From 10 war birds in the air at once to 6 40% hovering aerobat right over the edge of the run way. World class performances by Quique Somenzini, (of TOC fame) and Greg Hahn (Mr. Top Gun), with his stunning B-25. The museum was open to all modelers from 6 to 9 pm and the IMAX theater showed a NAS- CAR movie. Many prizes from the attending vendors were also given away to the participants. Don t miss this one if you can. The Air Force museum and the Presidential hanger with retired air force ones are worth the trip. And of course all the great model flying is fun too!

3 Volume 53, Issue 9 Page 3 August Club Meeting Minutes BY DOUG HARPER The meeting was called to order by President Andy Kane at 7:42 PM. Andy apologized for missing last month s meeting and thanked Dave McQueeney for doing a fine job of filling in. Andy asked for introduction of any guests or new members. He also apologized for not publishing a newsletter last month. Apparently there was no material submitted for publication. Andy asked Andy Finizio to discuss upcoming events. Andy F. began by showing a spread spectrum radio that will be given away at Oktoberfest on September 29. All members and guests in attendance will get a ticket, fliers will also get tickets when the fly, etc. If that isn t good enough, there will be free food provided by Andy Kane. There is a chance there will be a fun fly that day. Andy F. then discussed the past County Appreciation Day. Andy expressed his opinion that the day was very successful. There was a sizable crowd which was enthusiastic about the whole event. Many expressed their pleasure. Over 60 kids were given stick-time on the cubs (until one unfortunately lost a wing). The food was good and the help was more than ample. Andy F. expressed his appreciation to the club for a great event. Andy then welcomed any new members, visitors or guest. Brian Hitzeroth is a new member and has attended several training sessions. He already has his own plane. Mike Borgman is another new member and has started training. Jan and Tim Pakulski are just getting into the hobby. Tim has attended the summer camp and is ready to build his own plane. Dave Drazian presented an award in commemoration of the summer camp. This year s camp was a total success. Eleven kids attended, the youngest being 8 years old.. This year s camp was named in memory of Al Anderson. Al was described to the kids as a member to look up to. The weather was great this year. Each child was given many flights per day in addition to build time on the ARFs. Many club members, Terry Lamb, Ron Bozzonetti, Don Gray, Mel Swerdloff and others helped. Ed Liebolt is to be thanked for pulling this all together. Also, many moms and dads provided much help. Matthew Warren, Sabrina Sanchez, Noah Dinardi, Kyle Dinardi, Chloe Dinardi, Jasper Dinardi, and Tim Pakulski were given awards for completion of the camp and declared to be Student Pilots of DCRC. Others who completed the camp were Luke Liebolt, Nate Liebolt, Nathan Radko and Zachary Zweig. Tomorrow there will be an Electric Fly at the field starting at 10AM. Andy Kane will be cooking lunch for all in attendance. No competition so everyone bring their electrics and fly. Jim McDaniel next discussed Wings Over Piper that many of our members attended two weeks ago. We had a great time and found the hospitality more than welcoming. If you like Cubs, this is the place to go. In this spirit, we are planning our upcoming Bealeton Fly in during the week of Sept 7-9. Food will be available Friday and Saturday at Fife's Café. Saturday evening, we will have a nominally priced cookout with a movie under the stars. There will be a flying demo on Sunday immediately before the fullscale show. Plane rides will be available. Bealeton is about 8 miles south of Warrenton, VA. We plan a great weekend. Andy Kane next discussed a turbine fly in in Libertyville, PA, Three members of DCRC attended, Andy Kane, Andy Finizio, and Nir Schweizer. Old or New Business: Don Gray clarified a comment he had made last month regarding how we should handle missing monthly newsletter. He suggested that we make the next month s newsletter cover two months when we skip a month. Walt Gallaugher made note of Tom Pfarr s contribution to the web page. Tom has greatly improved the content and format. Tonight s raffle is for an electric 540 Edge model. Model Shop: The Spad-to-the-Bone website discusses many coroplast models. Francis Person showed one design he decided to build. It is good at low speed but begins to flex at higher speeds. He used a K&B 40 for power and kept it very simple. The model gives great performance. Andy Kane presented a Hangar 9 Extra 260 that used a brushless 480 motor. It weighs 26 ounces and takes about 2 hours to build. Andy uses a 3- cell 2100mah Lipo with a 12X6 electric prop. It flies well but is not great in high wind. It will do 3D maneuvers. David Harris presented a Great Planes ARF SE5 WWI fighter model. It comes precovered but David didn t like the covering that came with the plane. So, he completely recovered it to his liking using Litespan. He also makes the markings out of Litespan. It uses electric power and is only flown in dead calm. Dave used the motor and speed control that Great Planes provided. Dave also has the Fokker but likes the SE5 better. David Fepelstein asked Jasper Denaldi to pull the raffle ticket for this evening. It was won by Ira Glickman who promised to stay up all night building this model. The program for tonight consisted of an in-model video recorded at the Joe Nall fly in about 4 years ago. The model used was Andy Kane s 40% Cub using a 3W 120 engine. The second video was from the dedication of our field in It was narrated by Mike Peizer and consisted of shots during the dedication day. Andy Kane was featured in a question and answer format where he provided information about our new field, about the hobby, and particularly how to get started in the hobby. No Board Meeting in August The meeting was adjourned at 9:05PM.

6 Volume 53, Issue 9 Page 6 Model Mixing Machine By Ron Bozzonetti If you're saying to yourself that this thing will never fly you would be 100% right. This model mockup was conceived as a way of visualizing the results of programming the mixing features on my transmitters. and taking up a lot of my workspace. Also, by using a small mockup such as this I do not have to confine myself to working in the workshop as I can now do my experimenting anywhere in the house. I built this mockup from 1/8" lite ply. The servos are standard size ones that I had on hand and was not using. The control surfaces are attached with pinned hinges that are epoxied in place. Alternatively one could use hinges made from tape or the CA types. Painting the mockup was a little luxury touch that I indulged in which doesn't add anything to its functionality but it made me feel better. Not shown in these images is the receiver and battery. These I intend to place Both of my transmitters have mixing features of which I have only used the pre-programmed "V" tail option. I decided that I wanted to go beyond this and utilize some of the other mixing capabilities that these transmitters offer. It was obvious that just reading the manuals was not going to work as I needed to visually see the results of what happens when I mix "A" to "B" and "C" to "D", etc. Of course I could hook up one of my models to see the results of my mixing efforts, but, I didn't like the inconvenience of having to put a model together in the center of the wing and hold in place with 'hook and loop' tape. Also, I have only made one cutout for the throttle servo. There is room for a second throttle servo if needed. For anyone interested in making one of these mockups I can furnish a drawing showing the dimensions that I used. This is a project that can be made in a cou- FOR SALE ACE 4-40 Kit. 7 Volume 53, Issue 9 Page DC/RC Al Anderson Radio Control Airplane Flying Camp By Ed Leibolt This year s flight camp was as great as last years! We had great weather all week long(maybe a bit hot). This year s enrollment was 9 students ranging in age from 9-14 years old. We started the week with 5 trainers that I provided and two club trainers. By the end of the week, we had only lost one plane. There were some hard landings, but no crashes. A rough estimate was that 100 flights were made, almost 3 gallons of fuel was used, and about half of the campers had landed a least once during the week. Club members came out and gave a lot of their time/ experience and effort to make this camp such a success. We had 3-4 flight instructors each day. Ron Bozzonetti gave the students great instruction and stick time as well as others. Terry Lamb brought in some of his great airplanes to show the kids and flew one of his big birds for them. David Drazin help the students build the ARF that flew on Thursday of that week. Bob Yount helped with the engines. Don Grey gave a lecture on flight that was informative and fun. We had help from the parents also. One father, Greg Dinardi brought in a lap-top computer to run the flight simulator, when my failed. Student Sabrina Sanchez brought in Alpha Trainer that she was training on with her father, Jose Sanchez. Sabrina s mom, Julie helped police the students, brought in a recycling bin and had homemade cookies on the last day. Other parents also stayed during the day and helped out. Some even got a chance to fly. This year we had sponsor, DURALIGHT, that gave us Lithum Ion battery packs/ regulators/ chargers for all 5 trainers. If you are interested in helping with this effort for next year or have any questions please let me know by either contacting me at or at Edward.Leibolt@navy.mil
