3 JULY 2002 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA RADIO CONTROL CLUB PAGE 3 BY MIKE PEIZER The meeting was called to order by DCRC president Jim McDaniel at 8:03 PM. Reports: Newsletter/Membership: Andy Kane reported the newsletter is now posted on the DCRC web page. If more members elect to subscribe to the newsletter in electronic form it could save the club $800 or $900 a year in printing costs. The newsletter is available sooner in electronic form because there is no wait while it goes to the printer. All the photos are color in the electronic version. Andy also reported 244 members. Flight Instruction: Kevin Jackson reported he is looking for photographs of the different events for the web site. If you have something interesting and would like to see it in the newsletter, get in touch with Kevin. Sound & Safety: Walt Gallaugher had one safety issue to bring up this month. It involves a fear some of our neighbors have of our planes flying over their property. Walt has written an article for the newsletter about the flight box and staying inside it. If all flyers stay inside the box the problem disappears. The north end of the runway has a line of trees about 1500 feet away. We need to use the trees as the boundary line. The neighbors who are concerned are trying to work with the club to solve their problem. We need to make an effort to stay a bit closer in. Andy Finizio said the planes that stray over the line are mostly trainers. Students tend to get far out and the instructors give them as much time as they can to get back on their own. He believes we were only a small distance over the line. We can fix this easily. If you are out at the field and you see someone over the line remind him politely. Walt is going to send pages out of the field usage log to Park and Planning. Remember to sign the usage log when you are up there to fly. There are copperheads in and near the trailer so be careful. Someone mentioned the incident involving the children playing with the frequency board and the cards and mixing them up. Jim said we will monitor the situation from now on especially during events. Events: Andy Finizio reported County Appreciation Day was a huge success. Kim McDaniel and her kids worked like dogs all day long. Without her and the kids we could not have done it. Andy singled them out for a special and well deserved thank you. Andy also thanked Don Gray for helping with the set up, Terry and Paul for managing the parking, and Doug Harper for helping set up tents. Charlie Calvert helped in his unique fashion, as well. 53 planes up there that day. We had over 500 attendees at the event. We made money unless Andy Kane bills us for the raffle prize. Doug Harper reminded the members of the hard work that Andy Finizio did on behalf of the club in running the event. Field Maintenance: Jim polled the members on the height of the tables. Dan Mintz likes the tables lower. Jim responded that the center tables are lower and we will leave them that way. Dan Mintz commented the size of the tables is great because you can get two planes on the table at the same time. Fred Nielsen has the design for roofing over the existing poles. We need help constructing the covers. The Board will decide when this is to happen and notify the members when it is time to organize a work party. New Business: Kevin Jackson warned anyone who flies on the ham bands to watch out this weekend. Montgomery College will be operating two monster transmitters, which could interfere with airplanes on the ham bands. Bob Yount presented a SAD patch to Terry Lamb for crashing three expensive airplanes and blaming it on the planes. Old Business: Andy Kane noted that Bealeton is coming up on the 23rd, 24 th and 25th of August. As usual, it should be a lot of fun. If you ve never been, plan to attend. Charlie Calvert mentioned we need more positive response for the mentor program. A sign up sheet was sent around and at least ten names were added to the list. The Wooten Aeronautics Club is building a trainer with the help of a few DCRC members. They will need more help, in time, so if you can help please let Andy Kane know. The students are looking for guidance, not someone to do it for them. They will be working on it during the summer. Jim noted several schools are planning to do this. So we can expect more calls for people to help out. The 4H Club has over 30 people signed up for their program and it has not been publicized yet. Andy Kane took the opportunity to thank Mary Catharine for building the Easy II at the field one morning during flight training, and for writing the excellent article for the newsletter on her experience. Bob Aberman asked about people who bought park flyers. Does the club have a policy? Andy Kane said the law states no one is allowed to fly a radio control airplane on park property in Montgomery County. Jim said we do not have a policy, however, if Bob would like to take a stab at writing something up, the Board could help him out. If someone wants to learn to fly at DCRC, they have to become a member of AMA and DCRC. Raffle: Tonight s raffle prize is provided by Doug s Hobby Shop in Waldorf, MD. A Saito FA-56 4 cycle engine was won by Roy Day. Model Shop: Andy Kane showed his Hangar 9,.60 sized Ultra Stick ARF. It weighs 5 lbs. 15 ozs. It took 3 ½ hours to finish. Andy believes almost anyone could use it to learn to fly. Bob Droege showed another beautiful old time aircraft (Continued on page 4)

4 PAGE 4 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA RADIO CONTROL CLUB JULY 2002 (Continued from page 3) he built. It weighs 5 lbs. 4 ozs. Part of it is covered with dress liner. Bob found out dress liner does not shrink at all. Needless to say this made the project more difficult. Bob Aberman showed a recycling project from used parts. It is and electric powered foam aircraft. The largest component is called a Teddy. It has a motor from a deceased Firebird. The model has not yet flown. Program: Roy Day updated the group on Maynard Hill s effort to fly a model across the Atlantic. They plan to make the first attempt in early August. They will have four planes to launch. Only one will be in the air at a time. If the tracking signal from the plane is lost another will be launched if and when weather conditions permit. The meeting was adjourned at 9:51 PM. DCRC Board Meeting 6/26/02 The meeting was called to order by Jim McDaniel at 7:45 PM at the home of Jim McDaniel. In attendance were Mike Dooley, Andy Finizio, Jeff Mervis, Jim McDaniel, Fred Nielsen, Andy Kane, Walt Gallaugher, Kevin Jackson and Michael Peizer. Jim McDaniel opened the meeting with a suggestion from Jim Beasley, who works with the Montgomery County Department of Education. He was surprised to find how much land the school system has for future use. Mr. Beasley suggested we look at properties up county for a potential flying site for the educational programs like Wooten High School. The Board will take the matter under advisement. Field Maintenance: Mike Dooley and Fred Nielsen showed a model of how the roofed over posts would look, at the field. Mike Dooley moved we order the materials and construct the covering. Andy Finizio seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. The 10 th of July was set up as a tentative date for construction. Public Relations: Jeff Mervis has been in touch with Fred Marks about attending the ceremony at the July meeting in recognition of his induction into the AMA hall of fame. Events: Andy Finizio reported County Appreciation Day was a hit. Total income from County Appreciation Day was $ Profit was a negative $ Flight Instruction: Kevin has once again updated the web site. Sound & Safety: Walt Gallaugher sent the logs for the last two months to Don Cochran. Many people are forgetting to sign in. Walt asked all members to please sign in every time you go up to the field. New Business: Michael Peizer reported he took the powered speaker from the PA system in for repair. He is touch with the JBL representative about warranty is- sues. Andy Kane asked if it would be ready for Bealeton. Michael replied it would be ready well before the Bealeton event. Jim McDaniel brought up a suggestion from Ron Bozzonetti who suggested that the club should consider providing a trainer to a deserving individual if they can t obtain one on their own. The Board discussed the issue and decided it would be almost impossible to draw the line on who is deserving and who is not. Andy Kane suggested the club provide all the equipment and support for all flight students for a fee. This would assure all aircraft used for training are airworthy and make training more efficient. Andy Finizio responded by saying that a big part of learning to fly is building the plane and learning about how it works, and he does not want to see that aspect of flying disappear. The Board will continue to study and debate the issue and see what develops. Jim McDaniel remarked that since the head of the flight training program has such a difficult and complicated job, he should have the final say as to how the training program progresses. In other words, the final decision concerning whether the club or the students furnish training aircraft should rest with the person or persons heading up the training program. The meeting was adjourned at 9:26 PM. Welcome to New Club Members in June Charles Spears, Gaithersburg Stephen Palmer, Gaithersburg Philippe Roemer, Rockville Daryl Wayne Shifflett, Damascus Steve Davis, Germantown James Cokinos, Gaithersburg Sergei Gaidamakov, Rockville Reza Shahabadi, Chevy Chase Congratulations to our new Proficient pilots For June Walter Rubino Jorge Nunez

5 JULY 2002 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA RADIO CONTROL CLUB PAGE 5 THE GOOD STUFF BY DON GRAY What a great turn out at County Appreciation Day last month and the weather was just great to boot! Now it s officially summer time and we have the three H s once again with us as the dog days quickly move in. A few of us are flying later in the day to avoid the direct sun and resulting mid-day heat. I have been messing with model engines for about fifty years my first engine was an OK Cub.049. And then came the big Fox.35 s to power the Sterling Ringmasters, Yak 9 s and P- 51 s. And except for the occasional small cuts and blood blisters on the flipping finger, I have been very lucky until recently. Yes the odds caught up with me and my left forearm received three good gashes from a Top Flight 10x6 prop. Zero stitches! I waited too late to visit the ER folks at Montgomery General; but they treated me great anyway and Zero wait Tim Miller time! Arm is doing fine and I would just like to thank Jerry Ramsey and Chi Lin for acting so quickly and performing First Aid at the field. Another good reason not to fly alone. Safety IS no accident! The first photo this month captures Tim Miller, our resident chopper pilot and certifier, setting up to fly his Falcon 50. The Falcon really moves out with the OS 50 FXH onboard. Tim is also doing some fix-wing flying now that he has finished up his redwood- stained lowboy table/platform just behind the safety fence (not to be out done by the Finizio s lowboy Yeller!) Next up is a photo of Roy Roy Day Day holding Ampex, his original electric-powered design. The model has a 56 Wing Span and is powered by a geared Astro 15 Cobalt motor on 12 cells. Francis Person likes to build and fly small R/C models and in the next photo Francis Person is holding Biplane a sharp-looking dieselpowered sport model with throttle, elevator and rudder controls. Our last photo this month captures one of the DC/ RC Dawn Patrol Bob McGowan Pilots, Bob McGowan, holding his 60- size Stick. Bob told me recently that he has replaced the tired OS 60 shown in the photo with a new Tiger Shark 61. Until next month, fly safe, stay cool and take lots of water to the field if you plan on staying out for any time. Ken Troxell REMINDER ABOUT THE FIELD USAGE LOG BOOK: DC/RC has agreed to collect field usage information for the County and has placed a Field Usage Log Book in the transmitter impound. Take the time to note when you arrive and depart in the logbook. The log book is only a temporary mater and will be removed once sufficient information is collected. It is very important that we show our support of the model airpark by using the log book.

6 PAGE 6 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA RADIO CONTROL CLUB JULY 2002 Sound and Safety Corner BY WALT GALLAUGHER The club has received several recent complaints from a local resident about planes being flown over or too near their property. This seems to be a continuing complaint voiced by different neighbors at different times. The last complaint I received, the person indicated that they were willing to allow DC/RC to resolve this problem, but warned if the problem continued that they would feel compelled to take this issue directly to the County. I need your help to resolve this issue now! Please take the time to educate yourself about the boundaries of the flight box. I have posted a satellite photo showing the flight box boundaries on the bulletin board attached to the impound. Study the photo and note the flight box boundaries using the prominent tree lines as visual reference. No one should ever fly beyond the first tree line that is about 1000 feet off to the left end of the runway! Stay on the runway side of those trees! No one should ever fly more than 400 feet beyond the large row of trees that stand in front of the runway! No one should ever fly behind the back edge of the runway into the pit area or into the parking area. I know it is hard sometimes to fly the plane and keep the flight box boundaries in perspective. Depth perception is also a problem. If you see a pilot flying outside the flight box, I need you to walk over to the pilot and let him know. We have a chance to police ourselves and resolve this issue before someone in the neighborhood tries to shutdown the field. I am depending upon your support. Off the Internet The Nicad batteries that we use in our Transmitters and Aircraft wear out with time. If you have a battery pack that is more than 3 years old you should be keeping a close check on it by cycling every month. If it is 5 years old or older you should replace it and be sure to properly dispose of the old cells. So - how do we tell the age of our batteries? Most Futaba battery packs and individual Sanyo battery cells (which most OEM radio manufactures use) have a 2 letter date code stamped somewhere on the pack or cell. The first letter of the code is the year of manufacture and the second letter is the month of manufacture = "A", 1997 = "B", 1998 = "C", 1999 = "D", 2000 = "E", etc.. January = "A", February = "B", March = "C", etc So - if you have a battery or pack with a date code of "CB" it was manufactured in February of probably still OK but keep a close check on it. The pack in my 8UAF transmitter was "ZF" or June of 1995 so I replaced it. I found one pack with a date code of "WC" which translates to replace that one without question. Happy flying Ted Brindle Basic Loop The first, and most simple maneuver is the LOOP. 1. First, fly into the loop with a good airspeed, usually full throttle, and then pull back on the stick to put the plane in a quick climb. 2. When the airplane becomes inverted, ease off the elevator just enough to round off the top of the circle. 3. When the airplane starts the dive down, cut the throttle. This will keep your engine from gaining too much RPM and it will also round off the loop. 4. Pull back on the stick more like in step Ease off the stick and add throttle until the plane is flying straight and level. You have just completed the loop. Basic Roll The second maneuver you will learn is the ROLL. 1. Add full aileron to either side, continue doing this until step As the plane becomes inverted, add down elevator to compensate for the drop in the angle of attack. 3. Ease off the down elevator as the plane rolls back over on its side. 4. Ease off the aileron and straighten out the plane. You have just completed the roll. Inverted Flight The third maneuver you will learn is INVERTED FLIGHT. It is just like a paused roll. 1. Add full aileron to either side and roll the plane inverted. 2. When the plane is inverted, stop giving it aileron, and start adding down elevator. 3. Keep the plane straight and level, and keep flying inverted as long as you wish. 4. When you are finished flying inverted, ease off the elevator and give full aileron in the same direction as in step Ease off the aileron when the plane is straight and level. You have just completed inverted flight. Developed by Geistware of Indiana., Scratched Canopy? There s a great product made by Meguiar Co. Their clear plastic cleaner... it works... and polishes your canopy at the same time... The product is sold by NAPA auto parts stores... Meguiar's inc. Irvine CA USA I hope you try this, I was truly amazed... Happy flying Chris Allen Poor Idle You can get the idle problem solved simply. Put a one way in line choke valve (a couple of $ in any hobby store) between the muffler and the tank. That way, when the engine is at full throttle and there is good back pressure in the muffler, that pressure is also in the tank. When you idle, the choke prevents the air from the tank to go back to the muffler, therefore maintaining the same high pressure in the tank as before. This WILL solve any fuel draw problems at idle. Happy flying George Brod
