3 AUGUST 2002 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA RADIO CONTROL CLUB PAGE 3 BY MIKE PEIZER The meeting was called to order by DCRC president Jim McDaniel at 8:09 PM. Jim opened the meeting by announcing that we have a special presentation so we will do the business portion of the meeting rather quickly. As usual, visitors and new members were asked to introduce themselves. George Matos, Howie s uncle introduced himself. Eduardo Valencia, a friend of Dan Mintz was visiting from Brazil. A host of members of Fred mark s family were in attendance for the presentation. Next Jim reported on a meeting he attended at the field last Sunday with the Department of Recreation. Among the issues discussed was who has responsibility for the field. The meeting went very well despite the rain and the early hour. County appreciation day has gotten a lot of positive feedback. Thanks to all those who helped to make the event a success. Newsletter/Membership: Andy Kane was unable to attend so Jim gave his report. We now have 254 members. 173 copies of the newsletter were mailed out. Flight Instruction: Kevin mentioned flight instruction is tomorrow and we need help. If you have time please come out. Events: Andy Finizio reminded the members that Bealeton is coming up. It is on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th of August, and is the clubs biggest event. If you can only come down for one day, come down on Saturday and enjoy the Bealeton experience. Field Maintenance: Fred Nielsen reported that new shelters were put up in one day. Enjoy the shade. Jim thanked Fred for all the engineering work. New Business: Bob Aberman stated there are a lot of park flyers owned by people who don t really know what they are doing. It would be nice for the club to offer a service to trim the planes and help people get the most out of their flyers. They aren t ready to commit to the expense of a full-blown trainer. Bob Yount announced he is not out at the field often enough these days to properly administer the SAD awards. He is turning over this important responsibility to Ron Bozzonetti, who wasn t able to escape in time. Dan Mintz reported a problem he is having with the Futaba SkySport 6 VA. Where the handle enters the back there are hair- line cracks that have developed near the handles. You can pick up the transmitter by the handle and it will break and fall off. He informed Futaba and received three new backs at no charge. All had hairline cracks near the handles just like the ones they were supposed to replace. Dan recommends anyone with this particular model radio inspect it on a regular basis. Raffle: Jamie Marks announced the raffle prizes, which were furnished by FMA Direct. A half peck of peaches was donated to the raffle by Todd Butler. An FMA Co-Pilot was won by Ron Bozzonetti. An Einstein XL Battery Charger/Cycler was also won by Ron Bozzonetti. He turned it back to the club to be raffled at a later date. A $50.00 FMA gift certificate was won by Charlie Calvert. After changing hands a few times in a rather complicated set of transactions, the peaches went home with someone. I lost track. Enjoy them. I hear they re good. Model Shop: Ron Bozzonetti showed the Phaeton Biplane from Balsa USA. Ron modified it by fairing in the cowl and adding an enclosed canopy. He lightened the balsa sides and tail to avoid adding nose weight. Don Gray showed a mechanics creeper from Harbor Freight. It weighs 8 or 9 pounds. He believes a ZDZ 80 should make it fly. Program: Charlie Calvert has had many opportunities to say many things about many club members during the long history of DCRC. We have had a number of very accomplished individuals as members over the years. They joined the club in order to fly, so you probably don t know much about many of them. Fred Marks is an engineer and electronics expert. He developed the original Ace RC radio system. Fred wrote a book titled Getting Started in RC. He was instrumental in securing 70 new RC channels in the early seventies. Fred developed a dual conversion receiver which weighs 4 tenths of an ounce and costs $ His accomplishments are many and varied and too numerous to mention. Congratulations, Fred on your induction to the AMA Hall of fame. Charlie presented Fred Marks with a Certificate of Appreciation and an AMA Hall of Fame T shirt. It was obvious that Fred, and his wife, Patsy, and his kids Jamie, Tim and Dianna, were very moved by the presentation. Next Fred was invited to comment on any new products under development by FMA. Fred started out by describing the Fanger, which is used when covering a model aircraft with heat shrinkable covering. It is like a seam roller for wall paper with a bunch of pin points sticking out of it. Lay down a few sheets of newspaper, place the covering material on the paper and roll the Fanger the covering material. It punches microscopic holes in the material, making it very easy to cover an airplane with no trapped air pockets. The holes become invisible. At this point Fred digressed for a bit and spoke about his first recollection of DCRC in He remembers attending an annual meet every year and how much fun it was. Things were quite different in the earlier days of R/C, and he told of memories of people and events over the years. Fred wrapped up his digression by stating that DCRC is one of the oldest, one of the largest, and one of the preeminent R/C clubs in the nation. Fred has always wanted to fly an electric airplane with the performance parameters of a.40 powered airplane. He wanted something that could be flown off a runway. FMA has an electric plane in development that will fly like a.40 glow powered plane. At it s heart is a Lithium-Polymer battery. It weighs six ounces (Continued on page 4)

4 PAGE 4 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA RADIO CONTROL CLUB AUGUST 2002 (Continued from page 3) and produces three amp hours of power. Each cell produces 3.2 volts. It is manufactured by a company in Korea. It has a Speed 600 motor with a 2:1 Astroflight gear box, turning a 12X6 prop. It will fly for 34 minutes on a charge, and it can be recharged by connecting it directly to a car battery. Next, Tim Marks took the stage and thanked those assembled for honoring his Dad. He then talked about some new FMA receivers. One new item is the M5 receiver which is 22% smaller than the Extreme, full range full performance receiver. They are hard at work on the next generation of Co-Pilot. If you take the fully programmable interactive fail-safe programming of the new receivers, and combine that with Co-Pilot technology, you get the world s first truly fail-safe technology. It has been tested all ready and the results are very promising. Lastly, Fred wanted to leave us with one thought. No matter what technology FMA devises, modelers are very creative people. They will find a way to crash an airplane. The meeting was adjourned at 9:48 PM. ~ DCRC Board Meeting 7/24/02 The meeting was called to order by Jim McDaniel at 7:28 PM. In attendance were Mike Dooley, Scott Davies, Andy Finizio, Jeff Mervis, Jim McDaniel, Andy Kane, Walt Gallaugher, Kevin Jackson and Michael Peizer. Jim opened the meeting by stating that elections are coming up in October. Andy Finizio, Scott Davies and Kevin Jackson s terms will be ending. Consider any nominations you might want to make. Treasurer: Scott Davies reported eight expenses over $ Field Maintenance: Mike Dooley would like to construct work surfaces at the back of the shelters so people can maintain their aircraft in a relatively shady area. Andy Finizio said he would not put anything at the back of the shelters. Jim McDaniel added that last Saturday, a few people mentioned the shelters are a nice addition. Jim said he got one comment at the general meeting that the shelters get very hot in the afternoon sun. The Board agreed to look into the situation and consider remedies to make the shelters cooler. Newsletter/Membership: Andy Kane reported there are currently 239 members. The number he gave to Jim to report at the general meeting was a mistake. Sound & Safety: Walt Gallaugher reported we have scheduled the set up of the corner marker pole for the first training session in September. Walt also mentioned he has noticed that, on occasion, instructors tend to let students fly too close to the pit area during take off and landing attempts. Instructors need to be a bit more mindful when allowing students to take off or land. Some aircraft are coming a bit too close for comfort. Old Business: Kevin Jackson said that he spoke to Bob Aberman about his idea of inviting park flyer people to DCRC to fly without becoming members of DCRC or AMA. Kevin told Bob the county stipulates that to fly anything at our facility, the flyer must be a member of AMA. All Board members present agreed that to allow anyone to fly anything at the field without being a member of AMA would go against the county stipulation. Additionally, Kevin remarked that any student learning to fly at DCRC must be a member of DCRC. The discussion turned to park flyers and the potential for frequency conflicts and interference. Jim said Fred Marks told him that the AMA frequency committee is working on the issue. DCRC has sent a letter to Don Cochran informing him of the park flyer frequency issues. Someone mentioned the Gude Drive site is an electric site and Bob might approach them with his idea. Andy Kane reported the Bealeton event is on track. New Business: Jeff Mervis has a friend who has opened a car wash at Routes 118 and 355. He might be willing to give a car wash discount to members. Andy Kane suggested Jeff s friend take out an ad in the newsletter and offer members a 10% discount for a car wash. Andy Kane is scheduled to host the August Board meeting, but he won t be in town on that Wednesday. Andy proposed we have the board meeting at 6:00 PM before the regular general meeting. The Board agreed. Andy will give a Power Point presentation on IMAC judging and/or show the Joe Nall 2002 video. BB&T has six tickets for DCRC members who want to attend the Wings of Freedom air show at Frederick, MD. The helicopter guys asked about putting in an off-road track at the field. The Board will discuss the issue and study the possibilities, but finding a safe location away from air traffic is a big problem. Kevin mentioned there is an issue of frequency coordination as well. The meeting was adjourned at 9:31 PM.~ Welcome to New Club Members in July Jim Hammond/Gaithersburg Eric Monnig/Gaithersburg Thu Phan/Rockville Jack Simmons/Inwood WV Ian McAllister/Laytonsville Congratulations to our new Proficient pilots for July Michael Diaz Sergei Gaidamakov Robert Aberman Todd H. Butler Edward Ramsay James Bonbright Jr. Zachary Baum REMINDER ABOUT THE FIELD USAGE LOG BOOK: DC/RC has agreed to collect field usage information for the County and has placed a Field Usage Log Book in the transmitter impound. Take the time to note when you arrive and depart in the logbook. The log book is only a temporary mater and will be removed once sufficient information is collected. It is very important that we show our support of the model airpark by using the log book.

5 AUGUST 2002 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA RADIO CONTROL CLUB PAGE 5 THE GOOD STUFF BY DON GRAY Despite the rather hot and humid weather of late, a good number of pilots and spectators have visited our field to enjoy the unique thrill of R/C flying. And also, a number of pilots have been certified in recent weeks. I recently spoke with Fogle s (the nice people who service our portable toilet) to ask that they please leave us a couple of the puck-shaped deodorizers after each weekly cleaning. I m making up a hangar to hold them up by the vents, which hopefully will help us get through to the next cleaning without holding our breath on the six and seventh days. If you see one loose, please don t place it in the actual toilet because it can stop up their suction hose during cleaning. Enough of this bathroom talk! Thanks to the design efforts of Fred Nielsen and the construction and labor skills of several other hard working club members, we now have two effective shade structures in the fixed-wing pits for all to enjoy. I understand that a third structure is being planned for the helicopter pit area in the near future. Our hats are off to all who helped make this happen. This month s picture gallery starts off with Jim Blanchfield holding his beautifully modified Hobbico Extra 300S. Jim didn t like the covering detail on the fuselage and tail of this AWARF so he removed the original stickyback material and replaced it with Monokote. The model is powered by an OS.91 Surpass 4-stroker and flies like it is on rails using a Hitec Flash 5X guidance system. The next picture captures Mike Peizer preparing his Carl Goldberg Bucker Yungmann Bipe for a flight. The aircraft has a wingspan of 65, weights 12 ½ lbs. and is powered by a 25 cc Cheeta gas engine. Next up is a photo of Saeid Garzan posing behind his Raptor 30 helicopter after enjoying several good flights. The next picture captures Jerry Ramsey cleaning up his Goldberg Eagle II after making some very pretty landings. And the final picture this month catches Marvin Napier holding h i s OS.46- powered Tower Hobbies Kaos 40. Also shown in the foreground is his 40-size Great Planes Cub, which flies very well on a Magnum.61. That s it until next month. See you at the field, and don t forget to help your fellow pilot. ~ AUGUST: 3 DCRC Training session 3-4 Warbirds over Penn. 6 PAGE 6 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA RADIO CONTROL CLUB AUGUST 2002 Dr. Walt Good Walter ("Walt") A. Good, past AMA president and considered by many as the father of the modern Radio Control (RC) model aircraft, died July 20, He was 86. When I was AMA president in 1963 at a time when AMA needed a new Executive Director, Walt Good was one of the key AMA leaders who helped persuade me to move to Washington to accept the position. I made the move and stayed on for 27 years, during which time AMA grew from less than 20,000 members to about 150,000. Practically all that growth was in the form of RC modelers so it is reasonable to credit Walt with helping to establish the basis for attracting so many new members." John Worth His death followed a little after a year of that of his twin brother, Bill, who shared Walt s pioneering RC efforts. A Life Member, Hall of Fame member, and AMA Fellow, Walt s considerable achievements spanned three principle areas aeromodeling, AMA administration, and a distinguished career in scientific research. Born in Hillsdale MI, Walt is best known for his work with brother Bill, to design and build their first RC aircraft, the Big Guff, and their own radio equipment in Their model placed first the following year at the RC Nationals in Detroit. The Guff was used extensively for demonstrations, one of which included a spectator by the name of Henry Ford. Later accounts recalled that the model nearly struck Ford, "but Ford never batted an eye," Walt said in an interview many years later. Walt s success carried over into the classroom and in the workplace. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1941, and took his first job at the Johns Hopkins Physics Laboratory near Washington DC. His research there included top-secret work to develop the VT Proximity Fuse during World War II. Walt received several awards for his work in this area. Following the war, Walt resumed his aeromodeling activities, winning first place with an updated RC Guff at the 1947 AMA Nationals in Minnesota. In 1952, flying a new RC design, the Rudder Bug, Walt set a new Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) RC World Duration record flight of just over 40 minutes at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington DC. A few years later he was honored by the FAI with the prestigious Tissandier award for his pioneering work in model aviation. Another of Walt s model airplanes, the Multi-Bug, set an FAI altitude record in 1963 assisted by the piloting experience of another AMA Hall of Fame member and past AMA president, Maynard Hill. In 1965, Walt helped pioneer another form of aeromodeling, successfully launching an RC model glider from atop a RC-powered model in flight. This event helped inspire the concept used 10 years later by NASA for the 747/ Orbiter "piggyback" flights during the test phases for the US Space Shuttle program. As an AMA member, Walt became active as a volunteer shortly after World War II. He served as AMA Contest Board chairman , and as chairman of the AMA RC Rules Committee He was a member of the AMA Frequency Committee , serving as the first chairman Largely as a result of Walt s early leadership, this committee went on to obtain from the FCC the many RC frequencies we enjoy today. In 1999, Walt was made an honorary member of the Frequency Committee. He served as AMA s 11th president Walt remained active as an aeromodeling competitor, functioning as RC team manager of the Dr. Walt Good was a very quiet, soft-spoken man who made a tremendous impact on modeling, Radio Control, and all who knew him. His charm was that he treated everyone he met with grace and respect. After knowing Walt for forty years I, for one, will sorely miss him. Norm Rosenstock US team at the first RC World Championships in Switzerland in He also continued to fly RC Sailplanes for many years, until within a few months of his passing away. Honors from AMA include a Fellowship award (1953), the highest honor AMA can bestow on an individual. Walt was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in Walt was inducted into the Vintage RC Society Hall of Fame in 1975 and was accepted into the Society of Antique Modelers Hall of Fame in Walt retired from the Applied Physics Laboratory, Johns Hopkins University, where he worked for 35 years, in Most recently, he lived in Port Richey FL. Survivors include his wife, two children, Terry Good, and Ginnie (Good) Warner, and two grandchildren. Perhaps his legacy is best defined by the fact the Smithsonian Institution recognizes his achievements in aeromodeling and its important place in aviation history. Walt and Bill Good s Big Guff has been on permanent display for many years at the Smithsonian s National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. In 1999, the Smithsonian created a traveling exhibit on model aviation, chronicling the biography of a number of famous aeromodelers, to include the Good brothers. A special Walt Good memorial program is being held at 2 p. m., August 22, at the St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 7922 State Road 52, Hudson FL Mrs. Joyce Good has suggested that any memorial donations, in accordance with Walt s wishes, be made to the church and/or to AMA.
