April 2017 Bulletin Hau i Fedi
Once again this year, as year 13 students start deciding on the next step in their academic career, many have been successful in receiving scholarships. Congratulations to Elain Rhys and Emyr Owen. Emyr received a Bangor University scholarship as well as the School of Computer Sciences scholarship with Elain Rhys receiving a Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol scholarship. Well done and good luck for the future.
Kieran Jones from year 11 is beginning to make a name for himself in the world of sports. Kieran played an instrumental role in ensuring Anglesey s silver INSPORTS award. Kieran has had considerable success in wheelchair basketball and contributed to the film created by Môn Active encouraging young people to take up sports. Congratulations to him on his success and good luck for the future. Here s Kieran receiving his award at Plas Arthur with Francesca Antionazzi and Tom Rogers.
One of Kieran s strongest attributes is his ability to work as part of a team and on April 4th, Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern s wheelchair basketball team- Sean Cai, Harvey, Gemma, Keiran and Thomas won the gold medal in a national IZB Wales competition in Cardiff. Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern will therefore go on to represent Wales in the British competition on the 26th April. Congratulations and thanks to Gemma Thomas for training the team.
For those of you who follow the school on Twitter, you will have seen drone photos from Huw Evans of 10 year recording the development of our sports grounds. We are able to carry out this work because of the generosity of a substantial grant from Thomas Howell Trust. Thanks to Mr. Tom Williams for his tireless work with the grant application and to Professor Carol Tully and Mr Richard Bennett of the University of Bangor for your support. Thomas Howell Grant officials, Professor Carol Tully and Mr Richard Bennett with Mrs Catrin Jones Hughes, Mr Tom Williams and Mr Tom Bradley of the Bradley's company.
There have been a lot of hustle and bustle on the rugby fields recently, as the under 13 rugby team played against Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr. Although the Bodedern team played very well, the final result was a 10-0 loss. It was a pleasure to welcome the team and especially to welcome an old friend, their teacher Mr. Dai Long. As we discuss old friends, remember that we are approaching an anniversary of the school's 40th birthday. In September 2017 it will be 40 years since the school was established. If you are a former pupil or a former member of staff, we would love to hear from you. Our intention is to create a booklet to remember and celebrate so get your stories and pictures to us. For more information please contact the headteacher by pennaeth@bodedern.ynysmon.sch.uk or call
As 2017 is passing by quickly, the school is looking forward to the Eisteddfod which will be held a short distance from the school. The school is busy preparing to be part of the festivities. More information will be available on our website after Easter. See the latest news about the Eisteddfod, on their website: Video
As usual there was overwhelming support from the school to a wide range of competitions in the Urdd Eisteddfod- from singing to artwork. Well done to everyone who took part and congratulations to the following pupils. Many will now go on to represent the school at a national level in the Urdd Eisteddfod in Bridgend. On the night 73 of our pupils received awards for their achievements in the clubs. Many thanks to all the coaches and organisers for their hard work. During the night there was a word of thanks from the council's leader Ieuan Williams and among the speakers was Ms. Llinos Medi and Rhodd Alaw- former pupil. 13 Once again, the school has been recognised for the tireless work helping pupils to make career decisions. Thanks to Mr Withers for his work to win the Careers Wales Quality Mark which recognises excellence in the field. Below is Mr. Keith Withers and Mrs Catrin Jones Hughes accepting the certificate by representatives of Careers Wales Bethan Crowe, Sue Legge Hughes and Mr Phil Jones.
The exams are approaching for year 10, 11, 12 and 13. This may be a difficult time for our young people and their families. The school offers full support for our pupils an extra lessons in many subjects as well as pastoral systems where concerns can be discussed with members of staff. Some pupils will begin their external examinations in early May, and the best way to reduce stress is to prepare. Every pupil should have started revising by now. Further help is available from the subject teachers or by visiting the below websites. = Methods for revising k_exam_stress?gclid=cnyqj9cyitmcfuqw0wod1dua4q = Methods for coping with stress
On the 5th of April, girls from 7E had the opportunity to be part of a blogging workshop from the Welsh children's poet Anni Llyn. The purpose of the workshop was to: 1) raise aspirations 2) build confidence 3) high-risk behaviour prevention in women aged The girls had the opportunity to voice opinions and views on current and common issues The generosity of Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern pupils continues. Thanks to members of the school council. The school raised as part of the BBC s Red Nose Day. At the request of the school council, 240 was given to a charity supported by the school to build a toilet block at a school in Uganda. The rest of the money goes to support vulnerable people through local Red Nose charities. Congratulations to Huw Evans year 10 for representing Anglesey at the public speaking finals with the young farmers and also to Miss Sioned Haf Williams from the Maths Department who was involved in the organising. Thanks to Mared, Rhydian and Thomas for organising a great evening to raise funds for Mared s visit to Patagonia with the Urdd. The three worked together to organise the concert as part of the BAC Community Challenge. 200 was raised. Many thanks to the Brothers Magee, Mr Richard Edwards and Gwen Edwards for the entertainment. It was a great idea to show the football game between Ireland and Wales as the artists performed.
