October 2018 Principal s Message The first 2 months of the school year have flown by. We are just a few days shy of the end of the 1 st term. Penny advanced to the provincial cross country meet held in Delisle on the 13 th of October. Best of luck Penny! The Jr. Girls Volleyball team and the Sr. Girls Volleyball team have continued their winning ways playing teams from much larger centers. The Sr. Football team has completed a perfect regular season. The team will host Sandy Bay in the first round of provincials on Saturday, October 27 th. Kick off is at 1:00pm. The Jr. Football program wrapped up their season finishing in first place with a 7-0 record. Congratulations to both teams on your perfect regular seasons and best of luck to the Sr. Football team in provincials. 2 Kindergarten News October was a busy month in Kindergarten. The children welcomed Lyndon back to school and our new student Leah, to our class. Blake brought his pet bunny, Rainbow, for share time. The children are learning about numbers and letters and how to eat healthy foods. We have focused on otters and what we otter do in terms of rules and behaviour at school. The students are very excited about the Halloween Carnival being put on by the SRC on October 31 st. We also attended a Fire Safety presentation by Wakaw Fire Department and the children got to see the fire trucks after the presentation. There is never a dull day in Kindergarten! Have a great month! Ms. Jennison Grade 3 News October has been a very busy month in Miss Mellesmoen s grade 3 classroom! During CAFÉ we ve been discovering new reading strategies, having book talks, sharing thoughts and connections and getting excited about reading. A fun activity that we have been doing during free time is writing books with partners. We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Dunville spend extra time with us and help us grow as writers in writer s workshop. Our writing folders are so cool! A highlight of our month was when we had a fire safety presentation. It was very exciting to hop in the fire trucks that were parked outside! Stay tuned for more updates about our grade 3 adventures!
Grade Four Classes attend Harvest Presentation at the Western Development Museum The Grade Four classes of Wakaw School traveled to the Western Development Museum to attend a harvest presentation on September 20th. Approximately 3000 students attend the annual Grade Four Threshing Demonstration at the Saskatoon WDM. The event has been a WDM tradition since It recreates harvests of years gone by, with a focus on highlighting the progression of harvesting methods over time. This event was fantastic! The Grade Four classes had an awesome time. This September program marked the 44th year that the Saskatoon WDM has presented the Harvest Demonstration to Grade 4 students from around Saskatchewan. Nearly 100,000 Grade 4 students from Saskatchewan have attended the program since it began. WDM volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly every fall to ensure the Museum can continue to share this important part of Saskatchewan history with students. We also had the opportunity to tour around Boomtown. A special thank you to our parent volunteers that helped lead our students around Boomtown. The Grade Four class had a wonderful time class had a wonderful time.
Mrs. Godart s Grade 4 s News The Grade 4 s have been busy at school this October. In Math, we finished our Patterns unit. The students are currently learning about whole numbers up to 10, 000. In Social Studies, we continue studying Saskatchewan. We currently have focused on the Geography of Saskatchewan and the impact of the land. In Science, the students just finished their light unit. In Language Arts, we are working on our Narrative Stories. We continue to read the Tunnels of Time. We are currently on our first book in the series. Amongst the many writing assignments, cursive writing and spelling lessons we are busy bees in Language Arts! In Art, we have created some beautiful pumpkin pictures. Be sure to stop by the Grade 4 classroom and take a look at them in the hallway. In computers, the Grade 4 s have been playing on Mathletics, Prodigy and Typing club. This will come in handy when we type out our stories. The Grade 4 s have also had the opportunity to use the Chrome Books and ipads. We use Classroom and Class Dojo weekly. In Physical Education we have spent our playing soccer, dodgeball and Volleyball skills. Also, in Character Counts we have learned about Empathy, Respect and we did a scavenger hunt. In October the Grade 4 s attended a Fire presentation and participated in their Walkathon. The walkathon was a huge success. We had great weather and had a wonderful time. A special thank you to Green Grove for letting us use their beautiful grounds. It has been a fantastic and productive October. Walkathon Update The Grade Four to Grade Six classes were finally able to complete their Walkathon, which was originally scheduled for Friday, September 14 th. Due to the weather in September, this event was indefinitely postponed. On Wednesday, October 17, students enjoyed walking a total of 9.6 kilometres to Green Grove Camp and back, on a beautiful fall day. During the first week of school, students went out and collected pledges from family, friends, and community members. The money collected is used to help pay for Division 2 activities such as year-end trips, educational excursions, motivational speakers, and the annual trip to the Cudworth Swimming Pool. We are very fortunate to have the support of our community. Thank-you for your continued support of our school fundraising.
News from the Grade 4/5 Classroom The warm October weather has been an incredible blessing. The Grade 4-6 classes were able to finally go on our Annual Walk-a-Thon, and the next day we participated in a Character Counts Scavenger Hunt. Both activities were enjoyed by the students. In Science we constructed our homemade weather instruments, and we went outside to observe and measure weather patterns. We will be completing our unit with learning about Severe Weather events, and making a Pic Collage poster to represent what we have learned. In Language Arts we will be starting a Heroes Old and New Unit and the 4/5 s will be able to write their own Comic Strip, and create their own hero. In Social Studies we are learning about the 10 Canadian Provinces, 3 territories, and the 3 oceans that border Canada. We have been labeling maps and naming Capital Cities. I feel like we will blink and it will be Christmas. Mrs. Mourot The kids playing some competitive crib against each other.

I am so excited to see all the books and great gift items that will be coming in our shipment. Please see the attached poster for the dates and times of the Book Fair. Can t wait to see you there!! On September 21st, Wakaw School held a Brain Walk for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. The Brain Walk is a program brought to us by the Acquired Brain Injury and SGI. It is an interactive walk through the brain that helps students learn about the different functions of the brain and about how to keep their brain safe and healthy. The grade 12 students ran the stations all day for us and many stayed during spares to help out. Station 8 was about Alcohol, Drugs, and your Brain, it was very popular! Students and teachers got to try out the impairment goggles which simulated your vision with different levels of alcohol and drug use. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the Terry Fox Walk and sent in donations! As a school, we were able to send $ to the Terry Fox Foundation!
My name is Stasia Loeffelholz-Yuzak and I did Encounters with Canada 2018, week 20, theme Global Affairs. Encounters with Canada is a one-week program where teens ages 14 to 17 from across Canada can come together and learn Canadian culture. Every week the theme changes. Week 20 of Encounters with Canada was Global Affairs where we learned about how Canada works together with other countries. There was about 93 kids in total, and we were then split into six groups of 13 to 15 with one teacher monitor. During the entire week we were always be busy! Monday we went to Parliament Hill and got a group picture and a tour of Parliament. For Global affairs week we went and sat in on question period. Monday was activity night. We picked our activity off the overhead screen and matched the number to a table. Tuesday was a bus tour of Ottawa and Wednesday depended on your week theme, so we went to a Cold War museum called Diefenbunker. It is an actual bunker but it will not withstand a bombing these days for how out of date it is. Thursday we were able to do an unguided visit of the Canadian War Museum. Thursday was also Cultural event night, so I chose to go to the Ottawa Senators game. And finally on Friday, the busiest day of all, we got to go downtown for three hours to do some shopping or just hanging out with the people we met. The banquet, final group photo, variety night, packing of your bags and finally the dance occurred after that. Encounters with Canada is a great way to meet new people from different provinces across Canada. This whole experience does help you to see Canada in a whole new way. I honestly had more fun than I thought I would. If you would like more information on how to get involved, go to Back to School BBQ On September 13th the SCC hosted the annual Back to School BBQ for staff, students, and community members. Despite cold weather, many people came out to enjoy burgers, sign up for community groups and watch the high school students take on some of the Wakaw School staff in a volleyball game.
EVERY DAY COUNTS If you want your child to be successful at school then, YES, attendance does matter! SRC News The SRC students are busy planning the Halloween Carnival on October 31st. The carnival games are 25 cents to fifty cents each. Please send your child s money in a bag or wallet, clearly marked with his or her name. Parents and siblings are welcome to attend this event. We will also be having a spirit week beginning Monday, October 29th. Monday is PJ Day, Tuesday is denim day, Wednesday is orange and black day, Thursday is mismatch and neon day and Friday is school colour and free hat day. We will be having a Remembrance Day Presentation on Thursday, October 8th, so this will be a formal day for staff and students. The SRC is also taking part in the We Scare Hunger campaign, to help fill up our local food bank. Reminder that Fridays are hat days so for $1.00, students can wear a hat to class. All proceeds from hat day go to Telemiracle.

Sr. Girls Volleyball The Sr. Girls Volleyball team continued their strong season this month by competing at tournaments at the University of Saskatchewan, St. Joes, Humboldt, and Mount Royal. At the U of S tournament, the girls started off slow dropping their first two games, but they bounced back in a big way by winning the next 6 games and finishing the tournament in a respectable 9 th place. They were able to defeat long time rivals Lanigan and Wynyard along the way. The October 12 th /13 th weekend saw the girls compete at two tournaments. The team that headed to Humboldt played hard against teams from across our school division such as Annaheim, St. Brieux, and Quill Lake, but were unable to qualify for the playoffs. The team that travelled to St. Joes in Saskatoon played very well at a strong tournament. The defeated strong teams from Swift Current, Weyburn, and Lloydminster on their way to the semi final where they met up with Bishop James Mahoney. This is where the tournament ended for the girls as they lost a hard fought battle in the third set. The next weekend saw the girls compete at the prestigious Mustang Volley tournament at Mount Royal in Saskatoon. This tournament featured many of the top teams in the province and the girls showed that they belong by giving these teams all they could handle. They defeated St. Mary, split with St. Joes, and lost a close game to Weyburn in pool play. Even though they played well, the girls ended up on the consolation side. The girls went undefeated through the consolation round defeating Regina Campbell, Warman, Virden, and Caronport. This set the table for a rematch with Regina Campbell in the consolation final where the girls came up just short. The month of November brings the provincial run that starts with conference playoffs on Nov. 3 rd. The girls hope that the tough competition that they faced throughout the year has prepared them for what will be a difficult road to provincials. Senior Football The Warriors senior football team completed the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record with wins of over Rosthern on Oct. 11 th, and over Birch Hills on Oct. 18 th. With number one in the conference wrapped up with the win over Rosthern, all the players got time on the field in the Birch Hills game. The Warriors are now preparing for provincial playoffs, which start on Sat. Oct. 27 th with a home quarter final game against Sandy Bay. Junior Football The Warriors junior football team completed their season by winning the league championship by a score of over St. Brieux on Wednesday, October 17. The team went 6-0 during the regular season, as well as winning 2 exhibition games. It was a very successful season for the Warriors, as the older players have become an integral part of the senior team, and the younger players gained valuable football experience. Thanks to all the players and parents for your dedication! Jr. B Girl s Volleyball This year we are so lucky to have such an enthusiastic group of young athletes to make up our Jr. team. Our season has been a year of growth and development, and the girls have shown improvement since our first practice. We participated in 3 successful tournaments that allowed us to further practice our skills. We have placed 1 st in our Division, and the next step is Play offs, and then Pre-Districts, and possibly Districts. I would like to send out a special thank-you to Bonnie Anderson, Koralie Gaudry, and Halley Newman for their coaching expertise, guidance, and patience in helping make this year a great success.
