What I mean by that is as I write this it is not yet Thanksgiving. By the time, I write another installment it will be right past Christmas. Nevertheless, it is the quintessential ramp up of the holiday season. By the time you hear from me again we will have turned the page into 2019 or at least almost. Can you feel me about my angst? Perhaps I can best describe some observations I have had recently that bring some sentimental issues to the forefront. The past couple of months I have been wandering through the range catching a glimpse of Norman Rockwell images which stick with me pretty indelibly. For those of you under the age of say sixty Norman represented in his sketches in the Saturday Evening Post moments of time that represented the joy of being alive. One of the most memorable was the little boy with his run away satchel on a stick sitting next to a police officer at a soda fountain. The boy was in no running away and the Cop was not suspicious about his surroundings. That probably in some ways earmarks a certain time of innocence in our society and culture that no longer exists. I beg to differ. You see what I observe here at Kenmore is a little more like that time which is pretty enjoyable to me. Let me give you a couple of examples. So, I am sitting in my truck facing the uphill paved road that leads to the archery range. I guess I was focused on some text message. Fortunately, I happen to look up and what do I see. It was a huge man or a burly boy as my friend would refer to him skipping with his son down the hill in syncopated rhythm. What a sight to behold. It was a feel good for me. On another occasion, I am observing a father instructing his daughter at the rifle range. I don t know what he s saying but I could see her listening with those eyes of admiration at her father and their interaction. Then just recently, I am showing some out of state resi- dents around the range. We walk into the archery session at the club house. The positive energy that transcended that room was incomparable. The sheer joy of working with the youth shotgun class that Mark Silver and Dave Levinson facilitate is another example of what I am referring. To watch the first broken target of a novice young shooter really is gratifying. If you think these things are insignificant think again. This is what we do at Kenmore and in my opinion need to do even more to insure our longevity. Have you ever heard the term APROSDOKI- ANS? I keep trying to pronounce the word but have given up at this time. The definition are figures of speech in which the later part of sentence is unexpected. Winston Churchill loved them: Where there is a will, I want to be in it. Sadly, there is another that recently may affect us negatively unless we insist and resist so to speak. When we watched the evening news. They begin the evening news with Good Evening then proceed to tell you why it isn t. With the passing of 1639 we law abiding gun owners are facing the reality of gun right restrictions directly in the face. Alan Gottlieb warned us not to long ago about being passive observers to this insidious wave of gun right restriction. So, here is my Holiday wish. Be vigilant. Don t stand by passively and let the politics of restrictions deprive the next generation from the joys of safe shooting sports activities. Much like the DODO bird we are in the cross hairs of extinction. Happy Holidays to you all. SAFETY IS JOB ONE!

Discussion topics: Dan Barton s report on the baffle and range repair projects Still working on the baffle project. Dan was looking for volunteers for a range 3 work party on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to reroof part of the target line cover with donated used steel roofing and cleanup the wood. Steve Reed volunteered to help procure s and otherwise send out the word to members who might want to help and to help at the work party. Wood cleanup should be to primarily remove the old board hangers at the 7 and 15 yard line (were replaced with line). The donated steel will only cover ~24 feet of the 14 ft deep by ~84 ft long covering, leaving 60 feet uncovered. Does the board want to go with / purchase different roofing for this work party? There was a question about what part of the public funds

4 Page 4 the Sportsman Newsletter December 2018 goes to repair the range as they do the most damage. Safety Tips & Concerns: A member suggested that the range masters should attend at least one pistol special use meeting every year? Is the pictured target allowed? We ll be setting up the boxes and hanging posters in the next couple weeks. The drive is to run from November 16 to December 10 th (cutoff date). 5 December 2018 the Sportsman Newsletter Page 5 We couldn t have asked for better weather for our monthly match and this was November. It turned into a beautiful sunny day with moderate winds. That is after the fog burned off. We had to wait a while for that to happen but then it was perfect. Not at all cold. The Pacific Northwest is, mostly, the best. Nine shooters showed up to try their luck and to win the fat turkey that Chris Wilder donated as the prize for the best aggregate score for the day. Thank you Chris! And thanks for coming over the pass from Wenatchee to shoot with us. It was also good to see Mustafa Bilal again who drove down from Anacortes. He s always a formidable competitor which proved to be true this morning. We had three shooters in the factory class. Or should I say four since one of the shooters was actually the team of Doris Locke and Cindy Vu. We must have had really good conditions in the first round of shooting since four shooters tied for first in custom class: Mustafa, Chris, Khanh Nguyen and Tom Horne all shot scores of 100. And in second place Doug Schwind and David Locke both scored 96 points. Also in factory class we had a tie for first: Ernie Snyder and Doris/Cindy both shot the excellent score of 99 and Matt Daly scored 81 points. All shooting was at 300 yards all morning. In match two; Khanh was first with 101 points. Doug and David both shot 100s. And Mustafa and Tom both scored 99 points for third place. Another tie for first in factory: Ernie and Doris/Cindy both scored 97 and Matt, improving his scores with each match had a score of 90. Match three: Mustafa s score of 100 was good enough for first place. David was second with 99 and Tom was third with a score of 98. Cindy/Doris were outright winners this time with a score of 97, in factory. And Ernie and Matt tied for second place with 92 points each. Last match of the day: (Our matches are ten shoots each.) Mustafa ended the match well shooting the best score of the day- 102 points. Doug was second with 98 points and Tom and David shared third place, each scoring 97 points. In factory class Doris/Cindy came out on top again with 95 points and Ernie and Matt both had 94 points for second place. In custom class Mustafa had the best total score, 401 points. Tom was second with 394 and Khanh and David both had 392 for third place. As usual, Cindy/Doris were the best in factory, with 388 total points, shooting their Savage 12 in 6mmBR. Ernie was second shooting his.204 Ruger. He had 382 points and Matt was third with 357 points, also shooting a Savage but in 6.5 Creedmoor. Chris, sorry we didn t get you in the group photo. We love having you at our matches and not just because of the goodies you bring! Next time we ll photograph you twice. Thanks to Matt and Khanh for helping with target changes and to Jeff Locke for doing the scoring. It s great that everyone pitches in to help make the match run smoothly and quickly. Our next match is December 15. We ll have a special prize for this match as well. We shoot all winter. If the weather s not so good we ll shoot at 200 or 100 yards but we ll shoot. Any questions call Richard Nicol at

7 December 2018 the Sportsman Newsletter Page 7 Rimfire Benchrest Rifle Match Rimfire Match Report for Nov 2018 Effective with the November 2018 match, the United States Bench Rest (USBR) 50- yard rimfire target will be used. Each target contains 25 two-inch diameter bulls plus three sighter bulls. The scoring system is based on where the bullet touches the inner edge of the ring of the bull with one shot per bull. Each of the rings is.125 inches wide beyond the.1-inch center bullseye so even a fractional miss can adversely affect the shooters score. X s will be recorded but used for tiebreakers only and not included in the score. Here is a link to how to score the new target: showthread.php?t= Copies of these instructions are also available from the Match Director. Each of the two targets will have standalone results and cash payouts so if you don t shoot well in the first string there is a second opportunity to finish in the money. If there are more than 18 entrants, the first 18 shooters will complete both of their targets in one 50- minute relay followed by the remaining shooters. The scores from both relays will be aggregated by rifle division and cash payouts will be then awarded. Participants from the first relay may shoot non-counting scores for the target cost of two dollars. Advise the match director if you are interested participating for non-counting scores so we will have enough targets for all participants. Shooters may use either a bipod or bags to support their rifle stocks and rear rest bags are also allowed. The scores will be posted under the Events tab on the range website. To be eligible for a season end first, second, or third place finish the competitor is required to complete a minimum of 16 targets. Wind flags have been purchased and will be set up prior to the beginning of the match. The competitors are separated into two divisions, Match for rifles designed for match competitions (typically costing $700 or more) and Sport for rifles designed for target and sport shooting like those manufactured by Ruger, Savage, and CZ. In this month s match there were nine competitors in the Match Division and ten in the Sport Division. Welcome newcomers Aaron Manezes and Peter Lee. In Relay 1 Match Division, Kevin Kellogg was the winner with a score of 242 7X. Matt Daly placed second at 233 2X, and Dennis Tyskiewicz was third place with a score of 232 2X. In the Sport Division, Mark Helsen finished first with a score of 228 2X. Keith Wilson placed second with a score of 226 3X. David Guyer was third at 218 0X. In Relay 2 Match Division, Kevin Kellogg won again with a score of 240 7X. Dennis Tyskiewicz was in the money again with a second-place score of 236 9X and David Wild finished one point back in third place at 235 4X. In the Sport Division, Keith Wilson finished first at 231 3X, Mark Helsen was second with a score of 227 2X with Joe Davis finishing third at 218 1X. Attached is a picture of the top finishers in both divisions winners of the inaugural rimfire bench rest season. From left to right are David Wild (3rd Place Match Division), Kevin Kellogg (1 st Place Match Division), Dennis Tyskiewicz (2 nd Place Match Division), Keith Wilson (1 st Place Sport Division), and Brian Lapinski (2 nd Place Sport Division). No other competitor in the Sport Division completed the minimum 16 relays required to qualify for the third-place award. The entry fee is $10 with two dollars per shooter for target expenses and the balance distributed in prize money for the first three places plus ties. For complete match details see the December 1 st calendar event. Contact me if you have any questions about this match. Matt Daly Match Director mattd5404@frontier.com

The Pistol Competition Seminar practice is on the first Saturday of the month we will be indoors for Nov. through Feb. to stay out of the cold so it s.22 only for those months. Anyone is welcome to join us. The new special use process took effect on November 1 and is well received. The Rangemasters are pleased to help us provide a much more comprehensive program. A big thank you to them. We had an awesome work party on the Saturday after Black Friday. About 15 people, led by Dan Barton, Lou Scharbau, Steve Read and yours truly, replaced all the wood on the front baffle columns and repaired the two far-right, second-tier columns. Dave Levinson put up more LED lights for the 7 yard line in the far bays. It was a beautiful day and the work went fast with all the cheerful, hard-working help. Take a look at their stunning work as the range looks super spiffy. Thank you to everyone that helped!! Please remember to bring a toy for the less fortunate children and participate in the WCW Toys for Tots drive! We set a record last year that we d like to beat again!
