In the context of this message you ll see a picture of a couple of youngsters with a certain smile of satisfaction and contentment that only comes with having achieved a primal accomplishment. This was sent from Gary Webster with a notation that this was a reward for doing well in Hunter s Education. This particular hunt took place in Parma, Idaho. I point this out because Gary and his wife Patty are still very much engaged in promoting shooting sports and especially the gratification a person gets from hunting. Gary was the past president of WCW and is still very much involved having correspondence with board members concerning the health of our club. If that isn t an example of paying it forwards I don t know what is? That is a small example of the type of assertive action that helps promote the hunting aspect of our club. Take another close look at the smiles on these youngster s mugs. Does it bring back a semblance of happy days when you had that type of experience? If so, I believe you must get a little nudge from me about contributing to the growth of the shooting sports in general. Yes, it is our collective responsibility in my opinion. How many times have you had a conversation with someone about the shooting sports? In some cases you actually get a response that is somewhat curious about what it is all about from the person you are talking to at the time? Do you invite them to the range? If not, why not? Are you afraid they might think less of you because you are shooting sports advocate? Or perhaps you might think it is a hassle to help someone in the beginning stages of a new discovery? Please I implore you don t take the lazy way out on this because it is the future I am talking about in this regard. We need to foster and encourage folks to come check us out regardless of their interests. The other day, I was talking to someone at the grocery store. I was wearing my member s badge. In the context of our conversation this person said they had an interest in archery. I told them about our program and recently saw this person at the range. You ll note if you are paying attention that we will be putting out more signs for public display. Just the other day, I was driving up the hill and glanced at gravel/compost Company just across from the range. They had a simple sign that read: Open to the Public. Sounds like a no brainer but we finally have a sign as well which I hope abates the notion that we are a private club. I would be remiss if I didn t mention the effect of the snow on our club. Like many other businesses we suffered from the lack of participation in the activities that abound at our club. I would like to inform that we had many employees but especially Scott our maintenance supervisor who spent countless hours moving snow and deicing the premises. Toward the end of the snow cavalcade we had several employees that came to work just to do some snow shoveling grunt work. You know what that indicates to me? It means that we have people who work for us that have a basic affection for what is happening at the Kenmore Shooting Range that is beyond the pale of it s just a job. It takes an incredible amount of caring and concern to foster such an environment. I know that the efforts of our operations manager Mr. Mark Silver in conjunction with trustee SAFETY IS JOB ONE!

2 Page 2 the Sportsman Newsletter March 2019 Dave Levinson overseeing day to day operations is what is making that environment flourish. Before I bore you to death or worse yet have you believe that I am nagging you (well perhaps I am) there are some things I want to remind folks about. One is that in June we will have our club picnic which coincides with our annual fund drive to help victims of domestic violence. We were informed last year by the Snohomish Domestic violence services that they had a need for kid s bicycles. So, take a look in the garage and see how long it has been since that bike you bought your kid who is now thirtyfive has been occupying space. Lastly, I will be glad to continue to urge anyone who is interested in our First Shot Youth Day scheduled for August 17, 2019 to please come forward. Even if you feel uncomfortable getting involved in a hands on manner you could also put a few dollars in contribution toward this worthy cause. Thanks. Rimfire Benchrest Rifle Match Rimfire Match Report for February 2019 Effective with the November 2018 match, the United States Bench Rest (USBR) 50-yard rimfire target will be used. Each target contains 25 two-inch diameter bulls plus three sighter bulls. The scoring system is based on where the bullet touches the inner edge of the ring of the bull with one shot per bull. Each of the rings is.125 inches wide beyond the.1-inch center bullseye so even a fractional miss can adversely affect the shooters score. X s will be recorded and used for tiebreakers only. This is the link to how to score the target: showthread.php?t= The competitors are separated into two divisions, Match for rifles designed for match competitions typically costing $700 or more like those manufactured by Anschutz and Sport for rifles designed for target and sport shooting like those manufactured by Ruger, Savage, and CZ. The entry fee is $10 with two dollars per shooter for target expenses and the balance distributed in prize money. Competitors may enter rifles in both divisions with a $10 entry fee required for each rifle. For complete match details see the March 2nd calendar event. Match Division competitors will shoot both targets beginning at 9:01am with a 45 minute time limit. Sport Division competitors will shoot immediately afterwards starting at about 10:15 and need to register by 9:45am. Each of the two targets will have standalone results and cash awards so those competitors who don t shoot well on the first target have another opportunity to finish in the money. Shooters may use either a bipod or bags to support their rifle stocks and rear rest bags are also allowed. Wind flags will be set up prior to the beginning of the match. To be eligible for one of three season ending trophy spots, the competitor is required to complete a minimum of 16 targets. In this month s match there were eleven competitors in both the Match Division and Sport Division. Welcome to newcomers Sam Boggess, Sean Beveridge, and Peter Krengel. In Relay 1 Match Division, Kevin Kellogg was the winner with a score of 247 4X. David Wild placed second at 238 1X with Ernie Snyder finishing third place with a score of 236 2X and Tom Horne in fourth at 235 2X. In the Sport Division, Keith Wilson won with a score 234 2X. Newcomer Sean Beveridge was second with a score of 234 1X with Darren Hoffman third at 232 1X. Fourth place money was awarded to newcomer Sam Boggess and David Konkle with scores of 222 1X. In Relay 2 Match Division, the same contestants finished first, second, and third. Kevin Kellogg 246 6X, David Wild 243 5X. and Ernie Snyder 237 2X. Brian Lapinski was fourth with a score of 233 2X. In the Sport Division, Keith Wilson finished first again at 231 5X. Darren Hoffman finished second at 231 1X, Sam Boggess finished third with a score of 224 2X and David Guyer finishing in fourth place with a scored score of 219 0X. Member Benjamin Engelking asked we have the following letter read at the board meeting and published in the monthly newsletter. Below are the contents of the letter. START OF LETTER Open Letter to WA State Senator Palumbo, WA State Representatives Kloba, Stanford HB 1315, SB 5172 There are over 578,299 concealed carry permit holders in the State of WA which is over 10% of the adult population. Various studies show that increasing the rates of concealed carry permit holders has a strong influence on reducing crime rates, as found in the relatively low rate in WA. Studies in Texas, Florida and Louisiana have found that permit holders have firearm crime rates of 2.4/100,000 versus 16.5 for police officers and 3,813/100,000 for the general population. Your proposed legislation will add unnecessary requirements to the concealed carry permit holder. Myself and other members of WCW-Kenmore Gun Range would like to know the concern the legislation is trying to solve. What is it? Does your office understand that decreasing the number of permitted concealed carry may lead to an increase of firearms crime? We will be publishing your response in our monthly newsletter and our bulletin boards at the range for over 6,000 plus members and guests to read. Ben Engelking WCW member and WA 1st District resident END OF LETTER Committee reports: A brief review of the Archery Committee s, Shotgun Committee s, Pistol Committee s, Rifle Committee s, Corresponding Secretary s, Operations Manager s, Trustees and Treasurer s reports follow. 5 March 2019 the Sportsman Newsletter Page 5 shooting Rick! In spite of global warming, we had quite a snowy February here in the Puget Sound and quite a bit of it happened to fall on our range. About five inches. It s the only match in memory when it would have been good to have snow shoes or an Artic Cat to set up the target frames or put out wind flags. So, turnout wasn t that great but we had a good match. Conditions were almost perfect, except for the cold and the white stuff. Practically zero wind. We shot at only 200 yards to avoid a lot of trekking through the snow and puddles. It was good to see Parker Letson back with us, looking rested and very fit. He had a custom rifle built last year chambered in a souped up 6MM BR, the Dasher version. So he ll be doing some long range shooting out of town this year, but it s always good to have him here at our short range matches. We just about had three shooters in the custom class but during warm up, Tom Horne s extractor broke in his Panda action, so he was out of the competition before it started. To make things simple, since we had few shooters, I ll list the score in all four matches for Custom Class and Factory Class all in one paragraph each. Here are Rick Graham s scores in the four matches: 101, 104, 104 and 103. Parker s scores were: 96, 78, 68 and 85. Parker started using an unfamiliar front rest part way through the shooting and got a bit discombobulated. Good In Factory: Doris Locke, the Queen of Factory Class, won every match with her Savage BR model in 6mmBR. She s an amazing shooter, shooting custom class scores with her factory gun. She also shot no scores less than 100. He scores were: 101, 100, 102 and 100. Cindy Vu, shooting the same type of Savage rifle as Doris also shot very well. Her scores were: 92, 96, 97 and 98, every score better each match. It s great to have these two sharpshooting women at our matches. The certainly keep the men on their toes. And it was great to have Matt Caldwell with us again after several months. His scores were: 97, 79, 90 and 84. Rick and Doris were the clear winners in each category. Excellent shooting you two! Our match in March is one of our big trophy matches. This is the Siebert shoot. We use rules like a sanctioned BR match. Maximum weight is 13.5 pounds with a Light or Heavy Varmint profile stock. However, shooters can shoot any rifle they want, but only shooters with the appropriate BR rifle will be eligible for the trophy. We ll have prize money in at least two classes of rifles. The match is shot for score, as always, but only at 100 and 200 yards and one shot per bull, so it takes a bit longer to complete. We ll take a break for lunch. We ll shoot 25 shots at each distance, so bring enough ammunition. We draw for benches so do that before you claim a bench. The match is on March 16. It s always a terrific, very competitive match. Hope to see everyone there. For information call Richard Nicol at PS: If anyone wants to bring a prize: targets, primers, bullets, whatever, that would be more than welcome. Highpower Rifle Match This article should be a report on the CMP Game held on February 10 th, no surprise, we didn t have one due to the snowpocalypse! In fact, even the range was closed. There was a suggestion that we soldier on with the game to have a local reenactment of the Ardennes Offensive in But that was in December. Besides I m pretty sure the competitors were short on great coats, steel pots and white sheets for camouflage. The club prepays for the CMP Games and rather than forfeit the fee, we will have a CMP Game for the April 14 match in place of the planned NRA Approved Match. For March and April, we can hope there will be no snow, yet one never knows. If you plan to participate in the March Game, come early to check out the Member Swap Meet to be held on the same day in the Club House. Ted Hudlow, called me and said that they would be opening earlier to allow High Power competitors to peruse the bargains and be subjected to pre-game temptations. Don t forget to check out the flyers on bulletin boards for information on the June 8-9, CMP Small Arms Firing School at the Douglas Ridge Rifle Club, near Portland. Not mentioned in the flyer as I didn t know it at the time, the CMP will also be conducting a Range Officer Level 2 school the day prior. One must complete the Level 1 course which is offered on line. For more information check the CMP Website for Range Officer Training. For information about the Douglas Ridge Rifle Club check their Website.. See you on the range. George G. Smith

Spread the word. Also looking for instructors. The Bullseye Washington State Indoor Championship and NRA Sectional Matches are taking place on Feb 23 & 24, Many of the top bullseye shooter in the state have signed up as entries are coming in. Thank you to Mark and his team for repainting the yellow firing line in the clubhouse so everything will look stunning for the match. Indoor Bullseye League is running on Thursday nights 7-9 pm.22 only. Multi-state NRA Postal is moving into week 6. We shoot stickers on the back of the target and the score is ranked comparing teams in over 6 states. WCW has three teams, one in second place, and a second team in 4 th place in the top ranking section, A, and the third team is in 2 nd place in section C. Pistol Competition Seminar First Saturday of the month 9am - 12pm we move to Range 3 on March 2. Safety Tips, suggestions and Concerns: Members would like the Special Use program modified to allow the Rangemasters to use their judgement about the number of visits for certain members that they know they have the needed knowledge and responsibility from past work with them at the range or after at least 3 visits (rare and targeted use only). Pistol Marksmanship and Competition Seminar Rifle Committee Rifle Committee report, 13 Feb members have taken our Rifle Special Use classes this year. Our class on 5 February was cancelled and rescheduled due to weather. Our next classes are on Tuesday, 19 February at 3 PM, and Sunday, 24 February, at 1 PM. Matches since the last board meeting: Rimfire Match, 5 January Youth Rifle Match, 12 January Benchrest Rifle Match, 19 January Matches for the next month: Benchrest Rifle Match, 16 February Rimfire Match, 2 March The Puget Sound Riflemen s Association Winter League is in progress on Tuesdays. This has changed to a postal match to reduce the time spent driving to other ranges. The match here on 5 February was cancelled due to weather. The Junior Rifle program will continue on Fridays through April Their match on Saturday, 9 February was cancelled due to weather, and will be rescheduled as a postal match for the members from Everett and Marysville. The Douglas Ridge Rifle Club in Portland will be sponsoring a CMP Small Arms Firing School at their range in June. Could we offer orientation and mechanical training for new rifle owners? The NSSF has a First Shots program 90 minutes classroom, 90 minutes shooting at no or minimal cost. The club is looking in to a Youth Shooting Sports day along these lines, we are getting volunteers. We are looking into offering a position rifle match of some type for smallbore, on R #1. We requested two spotting scopes in the west bay of Range #1, similar to the ones in the center bay. We will use them in matches as soon as they arrive. We studied the 200-yard target line to see if the 40x42 inch SR target will work there, in case we apply to host a CMP SAFS event. The targets will fit on modified target frames, but there is not enough clearance under the baffles to shoot from the platform in any position other than prone at 200 yards, especially with the taller SR targets. We won t be able to do this. We are increasing our match notice coverage, with WSRPA, WAC, NRA, and CMP. We have volunteers to help with the clubhouse bullet trap cleanout when that gets scheduled. The next Rifle Committee meeting is on 20 February, at 7 PM in the chalet. It is open to anyone interested in rifles, rifle shooting, range operations, how to use rifles, how to use sights, how to compete, how to improve your shooting. If we can t answer questions, we have references! Martin Morehouse Rifle Committee Chair The 1st Saturday of each month we have a pistol training session for Bullseye and International Standard Pistol. Learn what competition is all about and get a lot of practice on timed and rapid fire targets. Need to bring, at a minimum: A..22LR semi-automatic standard pistol (5 barrel). B rounds of..22lr standard velocity. C. $5 fee Starts at 9:00AM ON Range #3
