This means we should get increasingly more busy accommodating customers. This requires everyone to be patient and attentive to our range masters and their directions. It is our implicit intention for everyone who uses our facilities to be safe and have a pleasurable experience. This requires attentiveness on both the participants and staff alike. Sometimes I think a lot of members believe the board s primary duty is to set and establish rules based on our bylaws. This is indeed is a very important part of the board s function. However, it is not the only function by any means. One of our primary functions is to sustain the fiduciary solvency of the club in general. I mention this as a lead in to the fact that business has been down at our club this past year. There may well be several reasons as the competition for the recreational dollar is stretched in many areas. Nonetheless, it appears that we may have to do a bit of belt tightening in the upcoming year. There are some very simple remedies like coming to the range more often and using this fine facility. Encourage your friends to accompany you. Make it a day outing. By all means expose youngsters to the shooting sports. If they are to understand the inalienable right provided by the second amendment kids will better learn it with a hands on experience which is always much more effective way to learn in my opinion. Understanding the many joys of becoming a competent marksman is a skill one can enjoy and utilize their entire life. Just recently I had the pleasure to help facilitate the Washington Water Fowl group at the shotgun range. These were youngsters most of whom had never fired a weapon before. With their parents as cheerleaders it was such a delight to see these kids reaction to breaking a flying clay for the first time. It is one of those moments a kid never forgets. In addition, it can be the start of a healthy outdoor activity that will sustain the shooting sports in perpetuity. There has been some considerable talk about remodeling range four and up grading range three as well. In light of the fair warning regarding business outlined above that reality is somewhat diminished at this point in time. We fully intend to make some additional safety improvements on range three in the near future. The one thing that members can absolutely help us with is gaining a GRANT to assist in the financial burden of remodeling these ranges. If anyone knows of a member who has grant writing ability please let us know. One last thing of meaningful concern. As some of you may know our staff are not always able to leave their post to go to lunch. They often have to order food to be brought in by either delivery or to send someone out to get food. It was brought to my attention that Jimmy John s would not deliver to our range. I contacted them and they indicated that we were not within the boundary of their delivery service. Being curious I found out that we are exactly 1.52 miles from the nearest Jimmy John s outlet. I started a dialog with one of their corporate representatives as to why they would not deliver to our range. After an exhausting parley of bureaucratic semantics involving back and forth excuses I asked the following question: I do get the impression the reason Jimmy John s is refusing to deliver to our location is due to the nature of our organization. I have owned a business and reserved the right to refuse customers for various reasons, but not based upon a controversial political position. I d appreciate a straight and honest answer, Is Jimmy John s refusing to deliver to our location because its franchise owner and/ or corporate s policy is anti-gun? Guess what I got back? The sound of crickets. Lastly, please plan to attend our membership meeting scheduled for October 10 th, 7:30 pm, in the club house. SAFETY IS JOB ONE!

3 the Sportsman Newsletter Page 3 Summer s over and winter ain t quite here yet and we had a perfect day for the last match of our regular shooting season when shooters compete for the shooter of the year award. That s from April through September. And conditions were very good almost all morning. Turnout was impressive also with half the shooters shooting in custom class and half in factory. Fourteen total. This morning we shot only at 300 yards, always a good test and as far as we can shoot at good old Kenmore range. There were a lot of scores in the 100s but not as many in the mid 100s as one might have expected with the good conditions. Usually there is something happening, wind-wise, out past 200 yards that isn t apparent from the benches. But that s what makes it interesting and challenging, Isn t it? Match one, custom class: Rick Graham was first, getting off to a good start with a score of 102. Ted Larson was right behind him with 101 and then right behind Ted was David Locke, scoring 100 for third place. Factory: The team of Cindy Vu and Doris Locke were first, scoring 99 points, Matt Caldwell and Dennis Tyskiewicz both scored 97 points for second and Ernie Simon was third with a 96. Match two: In custom, Ted and David both shot scores of 101 for first place. Rick was second with 100 points and Dan Kjelland s score of 99 was good enough for third place. In factory class Cindy/ Doris shot another score of 99 for first place. Ernie was second this time scoring 95 points and new shooter Travis Frey was third with 94. Match three: Dan found some good conditions and posted the second highest score of the day, namely 104. David was right on his tail scoring 103 points and Khanh Nguyen was third with 102 points, a very closely fought match. Good shooting! In factory the competition was also very tight. Doris/Cindy were first, no surprise, with 98 points. But in second and third place were Ernie and Matt C. with 97 and 96 respectively. Final match: Ted recorded the best single score of the day with a sizzling 105 points. That means hitting the little X dot at least half of the time, at 300 yards. Impressive. David and Khanh both posted scores of 102 for second and Dan was third with 101 points. Factory: A real cat fight Matt, Cindy/Doris and Ernie all shot scores of 95 for first place. Travis was second with 93 points and Dennis was third with 92. The overall winner with the best aggregate score in custom class was Ted whose scores never dropped below 100. This was also true of David but he had one less point. As usual, Doris and Cindy were the winners in factory class, by quite a margin. There was some fine shooting this morning. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to make it all happen, especially to Matt Daly for retrieving targets and to Jeff Locke for scoring. It was great to have Travis Frey shooting with us as well as young (12 years old!) Bennett Chan who shot very well today, including a score of 100 in the last match. Good shooting Bennett! Going into this match Dan Kjelland was ahead in accumulated points for the shooter of the year award and he was able to gather enough points this morning to hold onto his lead, though Rick Graham was nipping at his heels. Congratulations to Dan. He s now won the trophy three years in a row so it s time for someone to buckle down and give him some competition. And, due to their winning all four matches this morning, Doris Locke and Cindy Vu are the winners of the factory class trophy for They didn t make it to all the matches but when they did they were unbeatable. Congratula-tions to Cindy and Doris. They were shooting a Savage benchrest model in 6mm BR caliber which has few equals for our factory class matches. But someone still has to know how to shoot it. Our next match is October 20 and it s another of our big trophy matches, the Frombach Match. It will be shot at 300 yards as well. There is only one trophy but we ll give cash prizes in both classes, so bring your factory gun and join the custom class shooters for a great match which has been held at Kenmore for many years. We will draw numbers for bench assignment. Any questions call Richard Nicol at

5 the Sportsman Newsletter Page 5 Orientation Pistol Competitioin Highpower Rifle Match Congratulations to Kenmore member Jon Sellar for winning the 2018 Washington State Precision Pistol Championship, shooting his personal best x. Jon was presented with the perpetual "Stoppel Trophy" for his accomplishment!!! He also moved up in his NRA classification to "High Master" not an easy thing to do as it requires a 97% average over 360 shots. Congratulations to Kenmore member Michael Connolly for shooting a 250-3x in the CMP "Excellence In Competition" (EIC) Pistol match earning his first 6 points towards the Distinguished Pistol Shot badge, an outstanding accomplishment!!! Michael also won the Washington State Distinguished match with a 279-8x, earning his Bronze medal for the.22 portion of this program. Of note, he did this using iron sights while other competitors chose to use red dot optical sights. Awesome job to both of you, knowing how much time and practice it takes to achieve these accomplishments! Scott Lorenz Pistol Marksmanship and Competition Seminar The 1st Saturday of each month we have a pistol training session for Bullseye and International Standard Pistol. Learn what competition is all about and get a lot of practice on timed and rapid fire targets. Need to bring, at a minimum: A..22LR semi-automatic standard pistol (5 barrel). B rounds of..22lr C. $15 fee Starts at 9:00AM on Range #3 August 12, 2018 The WCW Highpower Program will resume Sunday, October 14th with a CMP Game as there is no match for September. I ask the competitors for their choice for the type of Course A or B. A is 30 rounds while B is 50 rounds. Typically course B is chosen. The CMP Game is an opportunity to exercise an old war horse if you have one examples include M-1 Garand, 1903 Springfield, Krag and others. Modern military is allowed as well. In any case, bring what you have and we ll figure out a category. A few reminders about the CMP Game a notarized CMP Affidavit is required to be on file with the club, the match fee is $20 and you will need 5 additional rounds for sighters. For example, Course A 35 rounds total and Course B - 55 rounds total. For the CMP game, sighters are fired up front from a position of the competitor s choice (standing, kneeling, sitting, or prone). CMP pins are awarded per Annex G in the 6th Edition There were fresh faces for this match in that Martin Morehouse and Bryan Schremp participated and after a lengthy absence, John Slater joined us as well. Robert Shuey rounded out the group as a regular. Robert was the high shooter for this match though everyone did quite well as the lowest score was in the high 300s, not bad for a rookie. See you in October. George Smith The following new member applicants attended Orientation this month and received their membership cards. Ladislav Bitto Adrian Creig Taylor and Donna Dwyer Carlos Kirk Robert Lundeen Justin McCrory Alexander Volkov and Vita Fedorova Larry Wright Welcome to the club.
