2 From the President: Old Mother Nature has really put a hurtin on us during the past month, between the bone chilling cold, the snow, and having to cancel our Valentine s Dance. I am sure you all are as ready as I am to get to Ocean City for Meet Me At The Beach. Supporting Your Club Volunteers don t just do the work, they make it work. ~ Carol Pettit PLEASE Consider Volunteering If you would like to help with any of the many tasks involved in managing our club s weekly venues, monthly dances, or special events, please contact Ron Carroll by at: kathykco@aol.com. Sales are strong and we have a whole lot of stuff in store for everyone. The most exciting addition this year is the installation of the professional dance floor in the ballroom for our upcoming Meet Me At The Beach party. Looking forward to seeing everyone there, and don t forget to wear your green in honor of St. Patrick s Day. In February we went back to our old stomping grounds, the Szechuan Inn in Severna Park on Tuesday Nights new owners remodeled the entire place and we have been very successful at drawing a good crowd of 70 or 80 people each week. We were there for a four week trial, they loved us and we loved them so now that is where we have landed for Tuesday nights. We are also hoping to dance at Union Jacks once a month on Friday s at least until October. Let s hope that all the bad weather is behind us and we can look forward as far as we can, to Spring and the ending of this cold, snowy weather. I am getting the sign to cut this short because it is time to PARTY!!!!!!!!!! Have a wonderful time this weekend! Both Janice and Larry were born and reared in the DC/Baltimore metropolitan area. Janice was introduced to the dance fever in her very early years and was more involved with it than Larry. Once the two met, it was a foregone conclusion that Larry would be swept up in the dance scene as well. Like many of us, Larry learned to dance with lessons from members such as Louise Pyles and Phil Engstrom. Janice is still very active working as a Portfolio Manager for a prominent entrepreneur and has done so for this man for the last thirty-nine years. When she told me that this gentleman is a former US Ambassador to Switzerland, I am sure that there is another story right there. This is just one more example of how diversified and interesting our club members are. Larry has retired from the US Postal Service after twenty-eight years of loyal service and now enjoys his retirement by traveling with Janice to spend time with children, grandchildren and even one great grandchild. In addition he enjoys his time skiing during the winter months, working out at the gym, and getting in a few rounds of golf at every opportunity. Now that s what retirement is all about! Note: This list represents birthdays of members who have renewed their 2015 club membership at the time of this publication as received by our membership chairperson. Note: This list represents birthdays of members who have renewed their 2015 club membership at the time of this publication as received by our membership chairperson. Larry and Janice have been happily married for sixteen years. During my telephone interview with the two of them, Janice told me a wonderful story of how the two of them met. With Janice s permission I am going to share it with the members of the club. Janice had been in a relationship with a gentleman and DCHDC Hall of Famer, Russell Spittle for seven years. After two previous marriages, she felt that she had finally arrived in a relationship that would be lasting. Unfortunately, fate struck its ugly hand and it was not to be. Russell was diagnosed with a brain tumor and fought the disease valiantly for nearly two years. Prior to succumbing to the cancer, Russell made a loving prophecy to Janice - - that he would send someone for her. (Continued on page 5) Page / March April Newsletter

7 Spotlight on Larry and Janice Peters By Jim Chappelear (continued from page 4) Little did Janice realize that on a visit to Ocean City nearly eighteen years ago, she would meet that very special person. On an outing to Seacrets in OC on a Friday the 13th, she was asked to slow dance by a handsome gentleman, none other than Larry Peters. Janice told me that she rarely would accept a slow dance request from a stranger, but there seemed to be something special about Larry. Not only did a song come on that Russell had dedicated to her, but Larry had the exact smooth slow-dance steps as Russell and they floated around the dance floor. Larry confided in me that once he had met Janice it was a necessity that he learn this DC hand dance if he really wanted to spend time with this wonderful lady. From that initial meeting a romance blossomed and here they are some eighteen years later happily married and enjoying each other s company. In my opinion that is a love story worthy of a movie! One of the things that I enjoy asking club members during my interview is: What makes your heart go zing? Janice answered this question with a resounding when slow dancing with Larry. Amusingly, Larry answered the question initially with breaking 80 on the golf course but quickly correcting it by saying spending time with Janice. Atta boy Larry. You know the secret to a long and happy marriage. Janice and Larry are delightful and fun loving people who, if you are not personal friends with them, you are missing a treat. My thanks to each of them for giving me the time to share their love story. ========================================================================================= THANK YOU NOTE (From: Bill Kolodin Jan. 26, 2015) Subject: A Note of Thanks from Bill Kolodin, Proposed Bylaw Changes Chairperson First, I would like to John Samuels and Tom Tassara for getting the By-Laws Revision process started. Without their ground work, we would not have gotten to this point so soon or, perhaps not at all!! Next, I would like to thank the board members Ron Carroll, Pam Vann, Gene Sandros, Dave Rapson, Sondra Riley, and Carolyn Sandros for all of their hard work in fine-tuning the Proposed Bylaw Changes into a final version which members are voting on tonight. A special thanks goes to Gene for donating many hours of his time to put together the final documents that were sent to members via the newsletter and . I would also like to thank the following members who shared their expertise and made recommendations to the board to help us finalize the proposed changes: Jim Davis, Phil Epstein, Linda Hilwig, and Rose Manriquez. Finally I would like to thank Elaine Gilbert for all of her hours assisting me as Chair of the Proposed Bylaw Changes project. Thank you. Bill Kolodin Page / March April Newsletter

8 Subject: Our December 31, 2014 NYE Dance. NYE Dance Note from a Club Member (From: Jerry Hart) In several words this was one of the most fun Club dances ever. The venue: No bad tables, easy to access any part of the room, very, very nice dance floor, superb salmon. The music: Dr. Jay was outstanding with a great mix of music, old and new. The people: Dressed to the nines and "Looking good! The camaraderie: Wonderful combination of veteran, newer members and newest members. The dance floor and table decorations: The floor was oh so much superior to last year, room temp was consistent all night. Let s utilize this type of floor next year. The dance partners: Only nearly all of the best in our sphere of Hand Dancing - our Ladies of the DCHDC. Personal perspective: My impression was of a very well planned and run friendly gathering - Emphasis on fun and friendliness amongst all of us participants. Sure it was the time of year, but this new year just seemed to be special with the emphasis on "feeling the love" as we now refer to camaraderie that I felt at every table. Triple Kudos to those responsible for the planning, hard work and execution of this wonderful event. I plan to join this August group and any capacity that will be of help in In the words of Mrs. Arthur Murray, let's, "Keep on Dancing! We had an unexpected surprise at the dance when Carolyn & Gene Sandros served up some Winter Time Stew they made. Carolyn came up with the idea when she came across this recipe she found on the internet and thought it would be a good idea to have this at one of our dances. Everyone we talked to said it was very good. Some folks came back for seconds & thirds. We had plenty. Some extra copies of the recipe were on hand and given out. True Stories The 2013 Darwin Awards Countdown from 9th Place to 1st Place (Continued from Jan-Feb 2015 newsletter People sometimes do some really dumb stuff.) Fourth Place After stepping around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door, a man walked into H&J Leather & Firearms intent on robbing the store. The shop was full of customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the counter. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up and fired a few wild shots from a target pistol. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, and several customers also drew their guns and fired. The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt. Third Place Paul Stiller, 47 and his wife Bonnie wer e bored just dr iving ar ound at 2 a.m. so they lit a quarter stick of dynamite to toss out the window to see what would happen.
