Manager s Report By Carl Romano Long time VOTG Board Member Toby Van Rhee resigned from the VOTG Board of Directors effective August 1, We wish Toby well and appreciate all the years he served the Village. The rest of the Board members will need to select a new Treasurer and also consider filling the vacant Board position created by Toby s resignation. We are plowing through some of our summer projects. We have completed the replacement of twelve electrical pedestals. Each pedestal supplies electric power to four units. The work was done by Owens Electric Inc. I think the project went well, in most cases we were able to get the power turned back on sooner than in previous years. The cost of the electrical work was $52,488. We are also doing a sewer replacement project from A-7 to B-19 and beyond. We hired A-Team Plumbing to do the job. They are pipe bursting the section of sewer line that goes under 3rd Street and are hand digging behind B-19 so that a new section of sewer pipe can be installed all the way back to B-8. The total cost of this job is $27,550. CPA Kenneth Kandefer has completed the audited year-end financial statement for fiscal year Shareholders will be provided a free copy of the audit at their request. We had a surprise tropical storm kick up on Monday, July 31, It made landfall at Anna Marie Island, but luckily the Village did not suffer any wind damage to speak of. Once again, we would like to remind residents to observe the 15 MPH speed limit in the Village and please come to a complete stop at the stop signs. Also, keep the doors to your unit, storage shed and vehicles locked. I also advised chaining up any golf carts, bicycles or outdoor grills. I would encourage residents who have internet access to consider signing up for the VOTG Information Blog. It s free. There are two ways to access the VOTG Information Blog. One is to provide me with your name, unit number and address and I will send you the invitation to join the Blog. Please note that the blog is not to be used for commercial purposes, for an example, you should not post an article saying you have a love seat for sale. The second restriction is that it should not be used to insult or attack other Village residents. Labor Day September 4 Labor Day Picnic Submitted by David M. Ragland There will be a Labor Day Picnic on September 4, 2017 at Noon. Menu is Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Coffee and Tea. If you want other drinks, you must provide. Table setups will be provided. For tickets see Louise Lovejoy B11, Marilyn Rickwald N42, Janice Davis R9 or Pat Jacobs D35. Cost of tickets is $3.00. 3 Getting To Know You Interview by Sara Koziol Jean Johnson was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Chuck, her husband of 63 years, was born in Kansas City and moved to Baltimore for a while when he was very young. At this time, they lived next door to each other. Chuck s family moved away when he was about fifteen, obviously after Cupid had found a spot to later shoot her arrow! Fast forward a few years and the families met again in a grocery store back in Baltimore. The arrow was shot and the two became a couple. Chuck s military service over, they married and settled down to raise their three children. Jean was happily a stay-at-home mom while he completed his education in Engineering and Law and began his long career as a Corporate Patent Attorney. Early in the marriage, Chuck s mom taught Jean how to quilt. Jean had always been a seamstress and transitioned easily. She made a bed-sized quilt at that time (which is still being enjoyed by a family member) and then put this skill aside to enjoy raising her family. When her last child entered college in the early 80 s, Jean picked up her quilting again. She made several quilts of different kinds and on a lark sent pictures to Quilters Newsletter Magazine. Imagine her surprise and delight to later receive a call from the editor who said she was publishing some of her contributions! This ignited Jean s career in quilting and she became a prize-winning creator as well as a popular instructor for guilds and conferences throughout the country. She was consumed with her quilting until Chuck retired in Chuck accompanied Jean for her final presentation which happened to be in Pensacola, Florida. The next year they received an invite from the Pink Palace (now the Hampton Inn) in Bradenton which was then a residence for seniors. They spent about a month at that time looking around. After two brief stays in Timber Creek, they found their haven in El Rancho Village (K-50) and have been here since 1996 with the last several years full time. The Johnsons have enjoyed many activities here in the village. Jean is a constant in the bridge groups, loves to read and do puzzles. Chuck played golf and they both loved the dances until Chuck passed away in Jean enjoys being with her children, grandchildren and great grandchild whenever they are able to visit her. 5 Dance Committee Submitted by Pat Schalk There will not be any New Year s Eve dance. The person who was scheduled to play is unable to keep his commitment. We have tried to find a replacement without any success. If you know of anyone who is available and would be in our price range ($ to $ ) let us know. There will be February and March dances.
