I hope some (or all) of you are building some new models. I have heard a little noise about a Starduster X or 2 (or 3) getting started. Anyone who builds a Duster will quickly understand why it is such a popular model. Easy build, easy to trim and a really competitive model to boot. This design was flown at the AMA Nationals for two consecutive years as a special one-design event and it was very well attended. I spoke to Sal himself about the design. It was one of his favorites as it was such a successful build for so many people. He had fond memories of going to the Nats in about 1957 or so and seeing literally HUNDREDS of Stardusters of all sizes bringing home the hardware. My first introduction to a Starduster X was when my Brother Gord built one for the huge control line and free flight contest held on the old Sand Point Naval base (now Warren Magnuson Park). His model had a Thermal Hopper up front and he still brags about running between cars in the parking lot to catch it as it came in for a landing. He still has the model too, although the tissue has seen better days now over 45 years later. Checkered tissue if I remember correctly. Anyone who has attended the WMC contests in the past few years has seen Will Tilse and your writer battling it out with our Starduster 900 s. Will finally lost his after using the same faulty DT timer for TWO OOS flights. Seems that he got mixed up about which timer was working and which one was not. Hard way to learn that one. Last time I was over at the Tilse Hobby shop I noticed yet another Starduster 900 hanging from the ceiling so I expect that we will soon see Will flying a Big Duster again this year. (I hope so!) Our upcoming Summer Warm Up contest at Nick s field might be the perfect place to have another go at it. I have also been hearing about some action in the P-30 arena. For those who haven t yet built a P-30, this is a really fun event that really tests your ability to wind the heck outta the motor. With only 10 E:\OneDrive\SAM 8\SAM 8 Speaks\ docx 1

2 grams of rubber, it takes every last turn on the winder to eke out that last ounce of power. P-30 s build up quickly and with no prop to carve, this is one of the easiest rubber power events to get into. Don t learn the hard way with this one! DT s are a MUST with this event. I have seen several of the guys even going to the Pop the wing off method of retrieval. It s hard to watch but it seems to be pretty effective with limited to no damage to your model. Either way it s building season. Clear the yard work tools off of your building board and get something going. The hardest part is getting started! We are all looking forward to seeing some nice new models at the monthly meeting. Bring them in and show off your stuff. See you all at the Rainbow...Steve Dona, The Prez ****************************************************************************************************************** SAM 8 Minutes for December 14th, 2017 (attendance =15) The Prez called the meeting to order for the last lunch meeting of Congrats to all for making 2017 a great year. The meeting started off with the introduction of a new potential member in our ranks, Bill Juene (sp?). He admits to having worked at the now defunct "Tim's Bike and Hobby Shop" in Everett. That's why he was a familiar face to some club members. Steve reminds everyone the Christmas Banquet is Dec. 16th at Angelo's in Burien. The hours are noon to 4:00p. Your dedicated treasurer whipped up a breakdown of moneys spent by category and averages per month end January through December. It's short on small detail but shows where we (the Club) are financially. This sheet is available to whomever should request it. A first effort logo to be used on shirts or sweat shirts was shown. The meaning is to "fly the club colors" at events SAM 8 attends or sponsors. Homer says AMA is a source for shirts. More work required. Will Tilse suggests name tags for the Finn Hill mentors. Buttons and tag examples are hiding in drawers and boxes of some members. The group was encouraged to bring examples in for the next meeting. The Finn Hill ALPHA model contest results were discussed along with recommendations for model change. The next Finn Hill session is January 21st., a Sunday. Steve will not be present due to schedule conflict. Chuck Bower reminds everyone that the ALPHA flight contest is a three tier event. Tier one is a "box stock" flight. Tier two is a mod kit for the ALPHA. Tier three is modified ALPHA fly off using whatever mods the flyer deems appropriate. Feedback will be given to Mr. Bower for his contact at AMA. Best flight times over three Finn Hill events will win a Hornet 60 repro engine. Chuck Bower presents an award to David Higgins for his work at the Finn Hill Middle School as it relates to the kids development of model building and flying skills. Steve brought up the SAM 8 June 2nd and 3rd contest on 'Nick's Field' and the efforts needed before that happens. Al Fernandez reports Bob Einhaus is hospitalized, with apparent cardio-pulmonary issues. SHOW & TELL time: Jerry Morrissey shows his highly detailed Peck Polymer Embryo 16". Beautiful! Nick talked about the Northwest Aviation Conference that starts last Saturday / Sunday of January. He also presented his completed fuselage for his Goldberg Cumulus. A very fine finish. We WILL be selecting the design for our new t-shirtss Thursday at the club meeting (times a-wastin!) Bring in your new great idea for alll to admire and critique. Ya might think about the inclusion off the Strat-O-Bats and Flying Aces logos, but it might get pretty busy! Suggestions have included the original 8-Ball, black on orange shirt, as well as the newer expanded winged 8-Ball, in black, shirt color optional/tbd.
