Hi there, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Karen and I have been away on holidays most of this month, but are now back dancing. Sorry we missed the Adelaide Outlaws Birthday for the first time since we have been members of the Club, but I understand it was a fantastic night. Congratulations on your 33rd birthday and many more to come. Hope everyone had a great time in Victor Habor for the Paddle Steamers 10th Birthday weekend with Mike Davey as feature caller. What a great way to bring in Spring, well done Paddle Steamers for laying on a brilliant weekend, Mike was in top form plus our local supporting callers and the venues were very good. Looking forward to Pine City Twirlers 35th birthday in Mount Gambier, it should be a ripper of a weekend as well, especially when catching up with friends and making new ones. The Round Dance festival was held at the Flinders Park Community Hall and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended, a good turnout for the weekend. 4 SASDS COMMITTEE NEWS At our last meeting we finalised a few things for the AGM, so hopefully we had a good turnout & people enjoyed socialising and a meal together before attending to the business. Most of our time was spent working on the dance programme for the Christmas Dance on 17 th November. The Klemzig Hall is a great venue and it s always fun to meet up with dancers from other Clubs. New graduates are especially welcome and of course it will be basket supper. Last year some folks enjoyed dinner together at the OG Hotel before the dance, their reports were very positive so we re expecting quite a few to take that option again. (see details within) The 2019 Calendar is progressing well, Clubs have been very cooperative in ensuring there are no clashes. The Treasurer s Report for the State Convention was tabled & the full report from the Conveners will be given at the November meeting. That s about all from me, so until next time, happy dancing, Pauline Recently the Committee has also been discussing the dress code at Square Dances, in particular the requirements regarding ladies heels, below is an extract from the national website, Clean, low-heeled or flat-heeled shoes or jiffies of a type that will not mark or damage the floor shall be worn. Spike or small type heels are banned (heels must be a minimum 25mm long in all dimensions in contact with the floor surface) Ed. FROM THE EDITOR S DESK The parties roll on with this issue featuring Paddle Steamers 10th Birthday, by the time this issue comes out celebrations at Pine City Twirlers and Kannella Squares will be underway. Congratulations to all concerned. Christmas celebrations also feature in the following months with the highlight being the Society Dance on the 17th November, hope to see you there. If you just happen to be thinking about 2019 the Victorian Sate Convention is being held in March next year, early bird registration closes on 30 November if you are looking for a bargain, see details in this issue and enclosed registration form. Cheers, Stephen 4

On 29 & 30 September we held our very successful 16th Biennial Festival. In excess of forty dancers attended which was very pleasing including several from interstate and also from New Zealand. This year we included two workshop dances When I Dream of You 4 Waltz Phase 4+ presented by Warwick & Paula Armstrong (QLD) and Grande Grande Rumba Phase 3+ presented by Alex Kennedy & Sheena Casidy (New Zealand). One of the features of our festival is the local choreographers showcase. This time five dances, five different rhythms, five great dances made it very competitive. The showcase winners were 1st Loves Got a Hold of Me Rumba 4+ by Paula & Warwick Armstrong (see picture below), 2nd Some Girls Two Step Phase 2 by Anne & Les Tulloch and 3rd For Valerie Waltz Phase 4+ by Thelma McCue. The other showcases were My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You Foxtrot Foxtrot Phase 4+ by Shirley Bates & Terry Lee and Green Door Jive Jive Phase 4+ by Alex Kennedy and Sheena Casidy Thank you to all our cuers Paula & Warwick Armstrong (QLD), Anne & Les Tulloch, Thelma McCue, Terry Lee (NSW), Shirley Bates, Coral Wegmann (VIC) and Alex Kennedy (NZ), the SARDA Committee and the dancers for making this a wonderful weekend of fun and friendship. 7 Firstly - Love is in the Air! Just recently we have had two of our member couples tie the knot. Robert and Heather who met when Heather joined our learners program in 2017 and Brett & Mai who joined our learners this year. Congratulations to you all and we re glad Square Dancing is a part of your lives. We hope you all enjoyed our annual Halloween Dance this year and thanks to many who dressed the part and helped set up the hall. Always a lot of fun! Coming up shortly is our AGM. A great excuse to consume buckets of scones, jam and cream and have a brief run through the year, financials and an election of committee. See the advert for details. It will be a brief meeting during the supper break. I must say it is sobering to also announce the end of year festivities. Wow, has the year breezed along quickly. See the adverts for details but we have a Xmas party dance for each of the and Plus Clubs and we d love you all to come celebrate with us. It s been a wonderful year and let s send it off with great nights of Xmas dancing. Congratulations to Robert & Heather Married 26 Sept 2018 & Celebrating at the Adelaide Outlaws 7
Durrant Dance Shoes are visiting Adelaide early December See included flyer or Club Notices for location details 8
At the time of writing this report we have seven of our dancers travelling to Paddle Steamers 10 th birthday. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us. Looking forward to another terrific celebration. Early November we will help Pine City Twirlers celebrate 35 wonderful years of dancing. Congratulations to the Club for holding it together and supporting each other as you do. You know what is just around the corner Xmas madness once again. We have no idea where this year has gone. When one stops to think about what has transpired in 12 months it is really quite amazing. Sssshhh, don t tell anyone.. those hot cross buns will be out soon enough. Chris & Alan Club currently in recess JVC Square Dance had a full square each week this last month and we have been going over the movements that have been changed in the lists. This month we had two big events to attend. Firstly congratulations must go the Graham and Dawn and the Adelaide Outlaws Committee and members for their efforts in being able to have a Club still going after 33 years. This takes a lot of effort by all concerned well done. Then came October only one big event Paddle Steamers Dance Group celebrating 10 years With Mike Davey creating a great atmosphere the weekend went so well again congratulations must go to the committee and members for all their efforts for 10 years and of course to the callers who have helped this Group reach this milestone. We have attended Paddle Steamers Dance Night 3 times this month. Happy Dancing Everyone Jacqueline and John. The Club has been busy with Christmas approaching. We can confirm we are having dinner catered, cost is $20 for members and $40 for non members, the dance isn't included in this price. It should be a good night so please get in contact with Jeff, Malcolm or Marita if you would like to join us. Our Halloween dance will be a blast and a little spooky even! We wish Jan all the best as she begins her recovery from her surgery. We can't wait to see you again. Have fun and see you in a square, De Square lady. 9
Another month has passed with only a few weeks left before Christmas. It s good to see Roger, Anne, Brett and Lyn back from their overseas travel, welcome back!. Happy Birthday to Jeff Seidel turning the big 70 on 1 st October, thank you to the Club and all the dancers that came along to celebrate with a yummy supper. Jeff was presented with a crayfish, a treat he has hinted about on many occasions. Our Picnic at Mannum was down in numbers, but still there was great dancing, food and the weather was lovely. Thank you to Guy and Deirdre for organising the Rowing Club. Just a couple of reminders, our AGM is coming up on the 4 th December see below, membership is due so if you haven t already paid please do so. Also our Christmas Dinner is coming up so please book. April 10
What a brilliant month we've had. Dancers travelling for dances and the general enthusiasm from those on the floor on learner nights is nothing short of amazing. Congratulations to those who have remembered previous lessons while we were away - we're very proud of you. Between now and the next issue, we'll have photos from the Halfway Dance at Port Parham. Dancers going are so excited to be able to catch up with new friends from the Adelaide Clubs. Roll on to the end of the year and in early 2019 a new intake of learners will be able to enjoy the fun and friendship of Square Dancing. Happy dancing everyone, from Shirley and David Our recent Flower Power theme was interesting. Anne provided some colourful stage & side decorations that were certainly bright & vibrant. We welcomed back Ros after her cruise, visiting China & Japan & Chris who has started calling again after his lengthy trip to America. It was also impressive to find out that about certain square dance personnel who performed a dog rescue on their way to our venue. Just before their marriage in September, Robert & Heather from Adelaide Outlaws joined us on a Friday night. Congratulations! The 10 th Birthday weekend was amazing. Our feature caller was Mike Davey from Victoria who along with Les, Graham, Jeff, Ian, Milton, John & Ivan not only kept us dancing but also thoroughly entertained. At one stage Mike, Les & Graham presented together which concluded with an hilarious impromptu stand up comedy act. Bernadette & Ros called brackets of their own & were well received. The birthday callers along with Chris were presented with handmade microphone pouches in appreciation of their time & commitment to Paddlesteamers. It was an honour to announce Life Membership to Zaree Sullivan, Chris Hawkins, Leon Parsons & Don Headon. Although Zaree passed away in August she was aware of this award. All recipients have made every effort to keep Paddlesteamers an active & progressive club. Their first official duty to cut the 10 th Birthday celebratory cake. Guests from many clubs, including Yorke Promenaders, Pine City Twirlers & Acey Squares came to join us. We thank you all for your support & friendship. Thanks to our club members who planned, organised & co-ordinated the weekend with decorations, raffles, catering, programing, musical entertainment, stage & hall preparation. It s encouraging to know that we can rely on our members for the numerous jobs that need to be done for an event to run smoothly. Square dancing & fun was the optimum outcome!!!!! Gail 11

Congratulations to Robert & Heather on their wedding. In late September baby Iliana Stavast had successful heart surgery in Melbourne, we hope she is continuing to recover well. Our visit to Scootback Squares for their Footy Night was another successful and fun evening with some of our learners joining in too. Thanks to the Scootback committee & dancers for their hospitality. For the last dance in September the Wild Frontier committee put on a surprise special night to celebrate Jeff s upcoming 70 th Birthday. Many thanks to some of the committee who spent time during the preceding weeks organising the night and then came super early to decorate and set up before Jeff arrived the hall looked great. We had four sets dancing most of the night and it was good that Wendy & Ken from Naracoorte and Jenny from Whyalla also visited on the night. Thanks to the committee and dancers for a super supper spread, Angela for the birthday cake and to everyone who came along. We hope you joined us for another successful picnic and dance at Mannum; a great afternoon. Don t forget our AGM is coming up and we hope you re able to join us to hear how the Club has been going for the past year. Also on the horizon is our Christmas dinner with Kannella Squares at the Old Mill in Hahndorf everyone is welcome, not just dancers from these Clubs see advert next page for details. Happy dancing, Jenny 13

On September 25 we held our annual Charity Night with all proceeds going to the Australian Lions Hearing Dogs. What a tremendous night and thank you to all who attended and donated to such a wonderful cause. When you look at some of the statistics, 1 in 6 Australians suffer hearing loss, 90% of dogs are sourced from shelters, so the benefits are not only human but the dogs get a loving home as well. We raised $310, Anne, Les, Eddie & Rosalie attended the Open Day on October 9 to present the donation. Our donation was gratefully accepted by the Chairman and the CEO of Lions Hearing Dogs. 16 The organising of our 35th birthday celebrations is progressing with only a couple of items to finalise. It is pleasing to note the number of away dancers that are coming for the weekend. Once the celebrations are over with, the next function that some of the Twirlers will be attending is the Halls Gap weekend, It will be nice to see Jean and Neil again and other dancers that do not make it to our birthday. I would like to introduce two new dancers to our club, Marilyn & Bill McGregor. started dancing with us at the beginning of the year and are progressing well through to. Trevor The last Round Up celebrated a very successful Convention, this issue is after a very successful Round Dance Festival. With seven cuers [plus 1 who did 2 cues], 134 dances, 5 Choreographers Showcases, two demonstrations and two teach sessions, how could it not be a wonderful weekend. Congratulations went to Paula & Warwick [Rumba] for 1st place, Les & Anne [2 step] for 2nd. and myself [Waltz] for 3rd place, all were nice dances that will be published in America. Many thanks to Shirley [Convenor] and the very hard working Committee who worked tirelessly to keep the food, tea and coffee in full supply. We also had a good contingency of dancers from interstate attending. So it was a big thank you to all who attended to make this such an enjoyable weekend. It is incredible to think the next occasions will be Xmas functions, starting with the Xmas dance on Saturday 17th November at the Klemzig Hall. [I like the one's around the corner]. My breakup will be on Sunday 2nd December. So it seems every year I say this 'Where has this year gone' Until next time Regards Thelma Well, it has been a quiet month with Scotty being in Vietnam for a month. We did continue to dance while he was away using recorded sessions. Thanks to Graham and Roger C. for keeping us dancing, but we re glad that Scotty is back. We had two couples Graham & Bev and Roger & Tricia travel down to Victor Harbor to help celebrate Paddle Steamers 10th birthday. A great weekend that we really enjoyed. We are looking forward to the Weda Helawi halfway dance coming up on the 20th October and catching up with Keith Lethbridge again. Keith is a great caller and very entertaining with his music & recitals. Till next time, happy dancing Scotty 16
