6 Program visiting with Pres. Rapke Today s program was presented by Wayne Mahar. Wayne is a native of Brunswick, Maine and received his training from the National Weather Service in Portland Maine. He and his wife, Dianne, have two adult daughters, Emily and Caitlin. They currently live in Baldwinsville, NY. Before beginning his career in television, Wayne founded Precision Weather Service, a private weather consulting firm that serves hundreds of clients worldwide in several industries including: radio and TV broadcasting, transportation, tourism, and the Hollywood entertainment industry. Additionally, Wayne lends his meteorological expertise to the state Supreme Court, providing expert testimony in weather related cases. (Maine, USA) Wayne has been a professional member of the American Meteorological Society for more than 30 years, and holds the AMS Television and Radio Seals of Approval for excellence in weather broadcasting. In 1984, the United States Jaycees organization recognized Wayne as one of the Outstanding Young Men in America. Wayne is the chief meteorologist on CNY Central s weather team. Wayne delivers the forecast on NBC3, weekdays at 5, 6, and 11 p.m. and occasionally on CW6 and CBS5. Wayne s contributions to meteorological education include "Wayne's Weather Workshop" for high school earth science classes and a co-authored course workbook on the science of meteorology, sold worldwide. In 2007, with the help of meteorologists Chris Brandolino and Peter Hall, Wayne developed an educational mock weather disaster that is used in the curriculum requirements for a college degree in emergency preparedness. He became the first fulltime meteorologist on Central New York television, which began a whole new era of taking television weather more seriously. In 2008, Wayne founded the Priscilla Mahar Animal Welfare Foundation, a notfor-profit organization with the mission of raising funds to support animal welfare initiatives throughout Central New York. He established the organization in honor of his mother, who passed away in She, like Wayne, had a unique connection with and love for animals. To learn how you can support the Priscilla Mahar Animal Welfare Foundation, Wayne at wmahar@cnycentral.com. Wayne told Rotary members that in the beginning of weather reporting, the weatherman would rip off data from a tickertape type machine and read it on the air with the use of a cardboard map and a magic marker. Now, there are satellites, radar green screen weather maps, computer graphics, Internet, Facebook, twitter and cell phones to master the use of along with a school for future meteorologists. He states that his news organization was the first to have Doppler radar. He said that news and sports could read their report from teleprompters while weather personnel must be extemporaneous while having ear plugs with time prompts, buttons to press to switch graphics and gesture with the other. The SUNY Oswego now has a Meteorology program.

7 Wayne spoke about Doppler the weather cat who actually was 3 cats before the last one died of old age. The first Doppler turned up during weather reporting outside in the news station s fenced in area where there was a small table.. The cat jumped up on the table and sat during the report and did this on a daily basis and earned the sport of Doppler the weather cat thereafter. Someone asked, What is a polar vortex? (By Jon Erdman Published: January 6, 2014) One of several semi-permanent weather systems over the Earth, the polar vortex is an area of low pressure in the upper atmosphere that, on average in the Northern Hemisphere, typically has centers in two main areas: near Canada s Baffin Island and over northeast Siberia. The vortex is strongest in winter, thanks to an increased temperature contrast between the Polar Regions and the mid-latitudes, including the United States. Occasionally, the polar vortex can either be forced well south of its typical position, or a significant piece of the larger spin can break off and plunge south into the U.S. Incidentally, this eastern Pacific ridge of high pressure aloft has been a persistent feature since December, helping to keep particularly the central U.S. stubbornly cold. In essence, instead of cold, Canadian air grazing the northern tier of the U.S., then draining off into the North Atlantic Ocean, the heart of this Arctic air plunged south into the U.S. A Rotary Minute The following Rotary History bites are from the book presented to Rotarians attending the 2013 Rotary Institute for Learning. Title of the book is, A century of service by David C. Forward. This will be ongoing. Rotary s History The Cold War Just as Rotary clubs in Eastern Europe saw a glimmer of hope at the end of WWII, Soviet communism arrived. For the next 44 years, former Rotarians were forbidden to enjoy the Rotary that they used to have. These countries included Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Baltic and Balkan states, E. Germany, Cuba and China. There was no freedom of speech or assembly. When democracy finally emerged in 1989 and the Berlin Wall fell, no group played a greater leadership role in reintroducing Rotary then German Rotarians who made many visits to help establish 80 new clubs in the east. More next week Community Events & Activities Rome Community Theater The next theater production will be the play Kindertransport to be shown June 5-7 at 7:30 PM and June 8 at 2:30PM. Fred Normand says that this will be an excellent production and encourages people to attend it.

District 7150 & RI News Rotary International themes: May is the Promote international convention month. The following are articles and excerpts from various 2014 Credos 7150 Information New Website Rotary 7150 is finally here! Official Website, Rotary7150.org. Rotary International Website, Rotary.org. The Rotary International Convention Will be held in Sydney Australia from June 1-4, Bruce Aylward, assistant direct-general at the World Health Organization (WHO), will be a speaker at the 2014 Rotary International Convention and will bring together some of the world s leading experts on water, polio, and social media. You will find new ideas for service and maybe a new partner for creating change. For details go to: New information: Safe water, improved sanitation and hygiene education are essential for health human development. Although access to water has increased dramatically, progress on sanitation lags far behind. Rotarians traveling to Sydney, Australia for the 2014 RI Convention June 1-4 can learn more about these issues at the World Water Summit held by the Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group on Friday May 30. Keynote speakers include Bob Scott (Rotary s International Polio Plus Committee chair), Vanessa Tobin (former head of water, sanitation and hygiene at UNICEF and Braimah

They are! Since not many Rotarians from our district actually go to the Rotary International Convention, each Rotary club has received an titled Voting Delegate Card for 2014 RI Convention. These delegate cards should be filled out by the club secretary, signed by the secretary and president, and then sent to DGE Deb Glis-son. DGE Deb will be attending the Convention in Sydney in June and will represent the clubs in our district who are not able to send a member to vote for them. The Rotary Foundation and its partners supplied water filters to 5,000 families living along the river. They are not just giving us a concrete box. They are giving us health and our children a better quality of life. Contributions to the Annual Fund help The Rotary Foundation provide clean drinking water and improve sanitation facilities worldwide. Take action by making a gift today. Up front from the May 2014 issue of the Rotarian. This is a watershed year for women in Rotary. Anne L. Matthews is the first female RI Vice President and there are more female directors on the Board than ever before. Ann- Britt Asebol, who serves as a member of Sweden s parliament when she s not in a Rotary boardroom says she s proud to be a part of the transformation. She states that women are taking on more and more leadership positions in Rotary, but we still have a long way to go to have 50 percent female membership. 10 Grant Received The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc. has awarded a $50,000 challenge grant to DPIL-HOC to expand in the two counties.
