Chase brought home a 1st place medal in the 220 weight class and David a 2nd place medal in the 195 class. Senior Makaela Moser, along with fellow MPHS musicians and musicians from surrounding towns, competed at the Small Group Music Contest on Wednesday, February 11, in the MP Middle School. The seniors headed down to Pierre to get a first-hand look at the legislature and tour the Oahe Dam, on Feb. 12. The trip, organized by Jason Weisbeck, social science teacher, was a memorable experience for the students. After returning to school, the students were asked about the trip. Many had favorable comments about the dam and how it worked. Others thought the committee meetings were interesting. The discussions of the bills and the capitol building itself were also highlights. The students all agreed it was a very interesting and educational trip. -Hudson Shillingstad Mobridge-Pollock High School has several students enlisted, or in the process of enlisting, in the Air Force and Army National Guard. These students all have different reasons for enlisting. Some reasons are family tradition, adventure, and/or that it helps pay for college. 2 P A G E 2 Sociology Students Visit Colony Going to the Hutterite Colony was an interesting and educational experience for the students in Mr. Weisbeck s sociology class. While at the colony, the students saw the colony s way of life. Areas toured were the old and new kitchens, both the German and English class rooms, the butcher shop, the welding/ workshop, the church, the laundry room, and the building where the chickens are kept. Although this colony is well known for their pigs, the students were not able to go in those buildings because of health reasons. They were also not able to go into the homes of the Hutterites. The colony visited is divided into three different colonies around Ipswich. The sociology class went to Plainview Colony. This colony is currently building a new kitchen, at a cost of a little over one million dollars. All of the work done to build the kitchen was done by the Hutterites themselves. While touring the church, the students learned that the Hutterites attend church everyday at 6 p.m. Their church does not have any crosses or paintings because they do not feel they need them. While at the butcher shop, the class learned that there are about 1,000 chickens butch- ered a month. When the chickens lay eggs, the only eggs the Hutterites eat are the cracked eggs, the rest they sell. The tour also included the chicken barn with all of the chickens. Their schools are much different than those of the touring students. The kids have three teachers one for the German school, the English school grades K-3, and the English school grades 4-8. After eighth grade, they are done with school and then go to work in the colony. Their school days start with German school from 7:40 to 8:40 a.m., then English school until 3:30 p.m., and then back to German school for another hour. At English school they do not have homework. They are also not allowed to use the internet. Anything they need looked up is done by the teacher. Another stop on the tour was the laundry room and a room where the food is stored. There, the students learned the Hutterites make their own soap. In the storage area, they saw how they make lotion and wine. The Hutterites make everything they can by themselves. The items they cannot make they buy in town. At this colony only the men have their driver s license and they are only allowed to go to town for business. Going to see the colony was an experience they will always remember. Their way of life is much different than ours. -Maranda Wagner MPHS students brought home a unique 3rd place trophy from the LNI conference art show. Mobridge Wins Award at LNI MPHS students brought home a trophy from the Lakota Nation Invitational (LNI) art show. MPHS placed 3rd with over 50 pieces of art. Deb Walker, art instructor, was in charge of organizing the art for the show. Students who participated were Trisha Soft, Arien Gustafson, Juliette Two Lance, Alexis Sjomeling, Lauren Thompson, and Jeremy Dennis. The LNI, which features a basketball tournament and art show, among other events, is an annual event in its 38th year. Over 2500 students come together and compete in the different events. Although the basketball games are big, the art show is the most visited event. MPHS students look forward to attending the event each year. The event took place in December at the Civic Center in Rapid City. -Alexis Thompson Students accepting the 3 rd place trophy for MPHS were Trisha Soft, Arien Gustafson, Juliette Two Lance, Alexis Sjomeling, Lauren Thompson, and Jeremy Dennis.
3 Senior Boys Bring Home Medals Senior Chase Schoenhard brought home a medal by taking first place at the state wrestling tournament in Rapid City on February 28. In the final round, Chase s opponent, Austin Bertram of Parkston, was unable to wrestle for the 220# title as he was injured during his previous match. Senior David Jensen took second place against Turner Blasius of Kimball at 195# in a close match. Other state participants were eighth-grader Isaac Olson 126#, Freshman Jaden Shepherd 120#, and Junior Jaden Madison 132#. All of the Mobridge-Pollock wrestlers won their first matches. Everyone had a great season and the seniors will be missed. -Brandi Martian P A G E 3 The athletes, coaches, stats, and cheerleaders pose for a tournament photo. Students are Anna Carmody, Maranda Wagner, Kayla Schneider, Dante Fischer, Jake Bleyle, and Robbie Pollock. Not pictured are Michael Hanson and Jordyn Mertz. Angel Tree Gifts Bring Smiles Once again, the high school student council participated in the annual MinnTex fruit sale. The members sold fruit and other food items before the Christmas break. These items raised money for the Angel Tree program. The money raised was used to purchase gifts for children from around the area. These gifts were given so the children may experience a true Christmas. The student council was able to purchase twenty-five gifts for the children. Ms. Bain, working with the child protection team, organized the delivery of the gifts before Christmas. The fruit sale has been taking place for many years now. I ve been buying fruit for 10 years and I still look forward to the sale every year, said Mrs. Shillingstad, the fruit is consistently high quality and the other items, like the cheese and beef sticks, are great. -Kenny Helm

Brandi is a wait- Business Interests Donte Two Lance As a senior in high school you have many of choices on what school you want to go to and what you want to do. Donte plans on attending Sitting Bull for his generals and then go to Colorado State or Washington State. Although he is undecided on a future career, he is interested in business. In his spare time he hangs out with his cousin, plays Xbox One, and chills. Donte s favorite high school memory was when he got to express himself in art class with his projects. His advice to underclassmen is to grow up. He also adds that this school is the best one around. -Juliette Two Lance Tori Fischer Aspires to be a Nurse The Fischer twins seem to always be together, but they have different plans for college. Tori plans to go to the University of South Dakota or The University of Mary to become a RN. Even though she is undecided about the college she is going to, she is set on being a nurse. Her favorite high school memory is playing games in Span- Skyler Meyer ress at Hogies Bar and Grill in Glenham. Her favorite high school memory is cheering at the State A Boys Basketball Tournament in 2013 in Rapid City. Her school activities now include cheerleading, track, robotics, and chorus. -Ronna Moser ish class before the Christmas break and having no homework! Art is a favorite subject for Tori, she also enjoys reading, watching movies, playing on her Ipad and writing stories. -Tara-Claire Whalen P A G E 5 Jake Carmody Awaits Graduation Jacob Carmody Brandi Martian Donte Two Lance Tori Fischer Jacob Carmody is graduating this spring. His friends call him Jake, or sometimes John Wayne. Jacob s family includes siblings Taylon, Anna, Ricky and Phillip. His hobbies are rodeo, hanging out with his friends, listening and singing to music, driving his Ranger dangerously, and hunting and fishing. He said his favorite teacher is Mr. Goehring, because he has taught him a lot and he has fun in his classes. Jacob s future plans are to join the military. If he could give any advice to the underclassmen it would be don t be late and get to school on time. -Anna Carmody Graves Memories As the years have passed, from kindergarten to my senior year, have we grown up? It has been only 14 years from my first day of school. Having to get dressed to go somewhere new without the protection of my mother. Again, as seniors, we are asked to do the same. Leaving to go off to college and begin careers, maybe even start families of our own. The time we ve been in school may have felt like forever, but in actuality it has been a small part of the bigger machine. Some are ready while others are not, me myself being the age I am, have had a chance to taste some of life s more sinful fruits. I have come to realize that through time things can only work if you make them happen, not waiting for the opportunity to strike, but seizing it. So have we grown up? That s not really for me to decide, but for you. -Tristen C. Graves
