1 Skunk Hollow Ski & Snowboard Hollow Holler Monthly Newsletter Volume 46 Issue 05 May White Water Rafting Camp-out! June 9-11, 2006 Wildman Whitewater Ranch, Athelstane, WI Wildman Whitewater Ranch is a unique outdoor adventure facility located 4.5 hrs. north of Chicago near Crivitz, WI. The all-inclusive weekend includes a total of 3 separate rafting trips: once down the Menominee & twice down the Peshtigo. The Menominee River has one of the greatest flows in the Midwest, with rapids & hydraulics similar to those of great western rivers. The Peshtigo, noted not only for its scenic beauty, but also for its very challenging white water, is recognized by river enthusiasts as the longest continuous stretch of whitewater in the entire Midwest. Portions of these rapids reach class III to IV. Two nights camping along the forested banks of the Peshtigo River, 5 meals and 2 action photos round off the cost of the trip. There is even a live blues band to entertain us during our authentic Texas Pit BBQ dinner. So, clean out your tents, organize your carpools and... For the past 6 yrs, I have participated on the Board as Parliamentarian & Social Chair, & for the last 3 yrs. as President. It has been a pleasure (& responsibility) to be president. The biggest reward for me was the pleasure of working & playing with so many wonderful people who have become friends. Those on the Board do so because they enjoy Skunk activities & the close friendships resulting from working together keeping the club going year after year. Next year, the Skunk Board has a great lineup with Janet (OJ) Ortaggio at the helm. New Board members are TomaLee Blowers, Membership Chair; Rick Heinz, Corresponding Sec./Newsletter; Dave Strauss & Marilyn Palmer, Auditors. Returning members are Lynn Grosse, VP of Trips; Sally Griffith, Treasurer; Cheryl Dinwiddie, Recording Sec.; Scott Brighton, Social Chair, Mike Pogar, Webmaster; Janice Pelkowski, Racing Chair; Don (Blaze) Blazowski, CMSC Rep; & yours truly Jackie Quillinan, Parliamentarian. We have an ideal situation returning Board members to maintain continuity & new members to put a different twist to their roles. It takes dedication to assume extra responsibility year after year. Thank You Skunk Hollow and... Welcome to the NEW Skunk Hollow Board of Directors. skunkhollowskiclub.com Sincerely, Jackie Quillinan

4 Volume 46 Issue 05 Hollow Holler Page 4 ASPEN TRIP REPORT By Mike Pogar, Trip Leader CMSC Chicago Week Aspen was an excellent trip. 472 people from eleven clubs enjoyed the excellent end of season snow and parties. Thanks Janice Pelkowski (J. P.) for enrolling 12 of the 18 Skunks to run the two NASTAR races. They won 11 NASTAR medals and 8 CMSC race awards. The GANT condos completed common area property upgrades and updated decoration and furniture in the condos from how I remember them in Great job! Their service staff and guest shuttle service continues to be top notch also. Wednesday was our club dinner at Mezzaluna s, known for their stone oven baked pizza. Another night some of us dined at Kenichi s for superb sushi and sasumi. It was costly but no more so than many restaurants in Chicago. On Wednesday I took off a ski day to bike ride with Ron, Mary Jo, Mary, Blaze, Debbie, Keith and J.Q.. Aspen Velo Bicycles was open just 3 days in to their rental season. Michael the owner recommended we ride to Woody Creek Tavern for lunch. It was about 14 miles round trip, great scenery up and down many hills. A great ride. I don t know the exact altitude but it is a lot higher than the 300 ft elevation of Chicago! Ron Jenczewski did a photo essay of the ride. Next door to the Woody Creek Tavern is Peg O Brien s Physical Therapy shop. It had lots of aroma therapy and crafty stuff. But it was the expresso machine that got my attention. They use organic coco beans in the dark chocolate bars and organic grown coffee to make the drinks. Even though Mary said we can t stay longer to have a coffee and the bike didn t have a cup holder, none of the coffee was spilled while riding along the road! Organic made it pricey but it was damn good dark chocolate and coffee! The weather & snow for skiing wasn t perfect but very close especially for spring skiing. If you know Aspen you know the excellent ski trails with sunny spring weather makes a most pleasing spring ski trip. Sunday s first day was a powder day with wet, heavy snow more like cement. But conditions improved with every day. And everyone who wasn t bike riding was in the hot tubs after skiing, even when it was snowing especially when it was snowing. If you have not been to Aspen, talk to Marilyn Palmer & watch the smile on her face. This trip was her first time to Chicago Week & Aspen. We celebrated 3 birthdays: JQ on 3/ 27, me on 3/28 & Marilyn Palmer on 3/ 29. Chicago Week 2007 is in Sun Valley leaving O Hare on Sat. 3/24/07. When the prices are announced in June I ll be putting down my deposit and signing up. How about you? ASPEN S.H.I.T. AWARDS I Wanted A Harder One Award (every woman s wish) to Patty Pulte when describing the longer and stiffer characteristics and reasons for buying a new snowboard. Jimina award to Rita Kubin. While dining at Jimmy s she saw many signatures on the restaurant wall. So Rita went to pen her name among the rest. A waitress quickly stopped her saying you must be a Jimmy to write on the wall. Guess you ll have to change your name, Rita! Burn Out award to J.O.. She burned out two hair dryers in two days. Dials, Levers and Buttons award to Janice Pelkowski. Upon entering the ladies room at the Kenichi s sushi bar (passing through a black curtain & the black door) J.O became so frustrated with the dials, levers and buttons on the commode that she cried out, "How the hell do you flush this thing?" A staff member arrived and immediately showed her the way. Photo Bug award to Cheryl Dinwiddie. Spent lots of energy going to the Kinichi Suhusi restaurant not to dine but to photograph all the buttons, dials & levers. The Computer Interest award, again to Rita Kubin. When asked why she didn t take pictures with a digital camera, Rita replied, Computers are the work of the Devil.

6 Volume 46 Issue 05 Hollow Holler Page 6 Skunk Hollow Hang Up Your Skis/Snowboard Party Recap On Saturday, April 8 th there were a couple of Skunks swaggering down the road. They sniffed the air and discovered a wonderful aroma coming from of all places, the American Legion Hall in Arlington Heights. Well, they walked in and discovered not only a spread of Boogaloo Buddies delicious beef and mostacholi but some wonderful side dishes as well. The word spread like wild fire and before you know it there were some 50 odd (very odd indeed) skunks gorging on the food, drinking the skunk juice and doing the Skunk Boogaloo to the sounds of music provided by a great D.J. The atmosphere was definitely of a party mood. The antics by particularly one skunk on the dance floor: well you had to be there. My back still hurts. I won t mention any names but his initials are DK (for Derek Kroll). Hey, Cheryl, where are the pictures? (Right here, Honey.) The party went on until midnight. S.H.I.T awards were presented, racing awards were given out (Thank you J.P. ), & the silent auction was a great success. Thank you, Cheryl for running that. There were many interesting donations including an authentic cow skull, a TV stand, Star Cartwrong s jewelry & abundant, interesting, tasty libations. All too soon, the party had to end. But there is always another dance right around the corner & before you know it. Thank you to all of the Skunks who made this party the success that it was. A special thanks goes out to all of the people who brought side dishes and helped set up and cleaned up afterwards. And I would like to nominate the bartender, Bob for an honorary Skunk Award. The Wanna Be A Skunk award. Hear! Hear! Bob is a man who is eighty some years old. In the last year he had by pass surgery. And he was on the dance floor partying with the Skunks. What a guy!! Hope you all had a great ski year. Check out the summer events coming up on the web site. It has been a privilege working as your Social Chairperson and I m looking forward to a successful coming year. My compliments to the current board and my wishes for success to the new board. Sincerely, Scott Brighton, Social Chairperson Ooo La! La!
