It's better to quit while you're ahead and save your energy for next time. two years. It has been a wonderful time. Let me count the reasons: 1. The Members The club has to make substantial payments for our ski trips on a specified schedule. Many of these payments are due early in the Fall. Having the funds to meet these early deadlines seems almost scary in the beginning, but each year our members always come through. Sally Griffith Treasurer They make their scheduled payments, and no one in the past two years has defaulted on a payment. We have wonderful members 2. To Further the Goals of the Club The Skunk Hollow Ski Club functions as an opportunity for club members to participate in activities at a group cost. 4 Recap By Jaci Gentile, Trip Leader From January th we came, we conquered, and then we left. Who are we? We are John Wurl, Susan Reynolds, Bryan Merrill, Patrick Marron, Patrick Kilbourne, Jean Michel Lussagnet, Jim & Mary Stefely, James McGregor, Gary Jasica, Rita Kubin, Greg Grueb, Sally Griffin, Cheryl Dinwiddie, Christa Schulz, Janet Harlow, Rick Fearless Leader Jaci Heinz, Richard Hoffman, Milton Levenberg and myself. Before we left it was, here we come, but now that we are all home and shoveling snow it is, we had fun. Arrival to Hayden on Thursday night Group Photo at the Rendezvous Sundeck went without a hitch. Our Alpine Taxi driver was gracious enough to call ahead to the City Market to make certain they would still be open when we arrived into town. All twenty of us hit the store with only fifteen minutes left before closing time. In order to get out in a timely manner, Jaci bagged all of our groceries (plus those of a few locals) as the check-out girl had no help. Then it was off to our condos. The Ranch had great accommodations and their complementary shuttle service could not have been easier or better. Friday, we woke up to a beautiful day in - blue skies and moderate temperatures. The mountain in experiences a temperature inversion that makes the top of the mountain warmer than the bottom of the mountain. All weekend the lift lines were very minor, but especially on Friday and Monday. Snow conditions were acceptable, but they really could have used a good dump while we were there. Personally, I had never seen such blue skies with or without my tinted goggles on. Each day, the group met around 1PM at the Rendezvous Food Court for lunch. We had a guest Skunk, Rick Hoelzer, join us from Provo, Utah for three days skiing (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Friday evening, 16 members ventured into town and ate at the Smokehouse - Cheryl and Christa great BBQ. Saturday was our day with mixed weather conditions (light snow, fog, ice and clouds), but that did not stop most from skiing. I think I was the only one to go into town on Saturday. Janet skied with the extreme team and found herself challenged in areas she would not normally ski, but she survived. Milt, a new member, was seen giving Cheryl lessons on the hill this day. We had 4 Skunk racers on Saturday: Rick Hoelzer capturing a gold medal and Rick Heinz, Jim Stefely, and Mary Stefely all capturing bronze medals. This was Mary's first medal. Hooray for Mary Saturday night saw the first of three game nights held in the female condo (Cheryl, Sally, Janet, Christa, and Jaci). Saturday night's game was Famous Faces. We competed boys against the girls. The boys won Saturday night. Sunday, we again woke up to a beautiful day. The racers hit the course early today. More medals were won. Rick Hoelzer captured a silver and was disappointed to be only 0.5 seconds from a second gold. Jim Stefely, Rita Kubin, and Sally Griffith all captured bronze medals. This was Sally's first medal. Hooray for Sally Milt Levenberg and Jaci Gentile competed for participation points. Sunday night was the club dinner party. Everyone met in the girls condo for delicious salad, garlic bread, lasagna, and pizza catered from Mazzola's. Continued on next page Jean Michel Page 4 Page 4

5 Continued from page 4 Bryan Merrill hooked his camera up to the TV and we all watched a slide show of pictures and videos. Watching the boarders go through the trees was quite an experience. With a roaring fire going, game night began again. Sunday night, the game was Trivial Pursuit. Again we teamed up boys against the girls. The boys seemed to know more trivia than the girls and took the title again. Monday was our last full day in. While most of the group spent their extra day skiing and boarding, four members decided to visit Mmmm Lasagna Strawberry Park Hot Springs. A few others spent time in town shopping and eating. Those that chose to ski experienced another beautiful day on the mountain. Après-ski occurred all over town on Monday night. Rick Heinz spent the evening at a cancer fundraiser concert headlined by Little Big Town, Richard Marx, and Kenny Loggins. Many joined back together again for one last game night. It was round two of Famous Faces and the girls team finally won. Tuesday was an early start. Our bus arrived at 5:30AM. It was a shame we all got up so early as we ended up with a two hour layover at the Hayden airport waiting to go to Denver. By the time we arrived in Denver, our flight to Chicago was already boarding at the other end of the terminal. We literally had to run to the next plane and were the last ones to board. How our luggage arrived in Chicago on time is still a mystery to me. Well, I hope everyone had fun. I know I did. had a lot to offer and we took advantage of it all. A Garden of Earthly Wetness By Cheryl Dinwiddie Bryan in the Trees Strawberry Park Hot Springs Page 5 Want to experience the Primordial? The Fluid Essence of Nature? Ancient cycles? 'Sno problem Immerse yourself as Steve, Gary, Jim and Cheryl did in a super- Natural, pressure rising, fault producing, masonry enforced caldron of thermal delights a hot tub Not just any old hot tub, like ones full of chlorine, cement and blue paint, but one created by the forces of nature Herself. Imagine a melting snow base percolating thru the rock face, it's water absorbing all that primordial heat hidden deep inside the earth, then pressure-rising like a fiery dragon spewing gardens of earthly wetness even when another snow base is still on the ground. Get down, Skunks Down in the water that is. Rest those aching muscle and moldy bones. Strip down to your inner core (and your bathing suit). Submerge. Enjoy the emerald green and glistening silver of the trees, the rush of running water the ice. Stay there Stay there. Breathe. The water doesn't stink (like Skunks expect) from sulfur. Soak and relax. Let the lithiumfilled vapors fill your insides making you giddy, silly and quite frankly higher than a kite. Then come down the mountain the 7 miles to town and tell everyone of your experience at Strawberry Park Hot Spring, Springs, CO. Go back every season again again and again. Think Snow Page 5

6 S.H.I.T. AWARDS Skunk Hollow Indecent Tactics The Hug-A-Tree Award To Patrick Marron - I guess you'll have to ask him the story The No Four Leaf Clover for U Award To Grace Peskie for tragically breaking her wrist the Sunday before leaving for missing the trip. We missed you Grace The Run-Away Board Award To Patrick Marron for losing his board while riding the lift. His board fell off and was seen going downhill solo. The Snakes on a Plane Award To Jim Stefely for bringing a snake bite kit through security at O'Hare airport. The TSA will not soon forget Jim. The Lost in Space Award To Jean Michel. The UAL ground crew boarded the plane prior to take-off trying to locate him as he had checked in, but not boarded the plane. Needless to say, he was the last one on the plane. The Elusive Gold Award To Rick Hoelzer for missing the gold medal on the second day of racing by only 0.5 seconds. The Silence is Golden Award To Patrick Kilbourne. On this trip, Patrick was being quiet and low-keyed - not like him at all The Artistic Achievement Award To Cheryl Dinwiddie for producing a fine picture of Rick Hoffman, Gary Jasica, Jim McGregor and herself luxuriating in the Strawberry Park Hot Springs Pools. The picture created with crayons at Johnny B. Goode's restaurant now. hangs ceremoniously on the wall of the restaurant at least until somebody tears it down. The Just Visiting Award To Janet Harlow for starting out her day with the extreme team that was heading straight towards the black runs of Pony Express. The one groomed run was the width of a single snowcat and also featured exposed rocks as well as bare ice. Janet made her turns without a single fall. Having completed her goal of a black run, Janet thanked the extreme team and politely skied off in search of friendlier runs. Page 6 Page 6

7 The Famous Faces Award To Jim Stefely for being reprimanded during the Famous Faces game with, No Jim, Napoleon is NOT Italian To Janet Harlow for stating that Alexander the Great was Russian (He s Greek). To the LEFT Award To Gary Jasica for calling Let's go to the left as we got to the top of the lift, then consistently going... to the right. The Once is NOT Enough Award To Greg Grueb for running into Gary Jasica, while stopped, not once, but twice on the same day. The Hokey-Pokey Award To Cheryl Dinwiddie for putting her boots on the wrong feet (you put your right foot in, you put your right foot out, you put your right foot in and you shake it all about) The UK vs. USA Shoe Size Award To Cheryl Dinwiddie. This explains why she was able to put her boots on the wrong feet. Cheryl was sold a UK size 7 boot, but her feet are USA size 7. The Grab the Bull by the... Award To Big Rick. After noticing that the Smokehouse restaurant had Rocky Mountain Oysters as a special, Rick placed an order for the table without hesitating a second. Rick, nor the rest of the table, had ever had them. Jean Michel was willing as he announced that he liked oysters very much. Surprise The 1,2,3,4 Award To Janet Harlow for the following comment on the shuttle bus into town. Well it's easy for her... she is German Christa was counting numbers in Spanish. The Victoria Secret Award To Greg Grueb for prancing around the condo in his red underwear. Thankfully, they were one piece long johns. The Billy Kid Award To Rick Heinz for taking advantage of the opportunity to ski with Billy Kid on Friday at. The Almost DEAD Skunk in the Middle of the Road Award Milt, Jim, Mary, Jim, and Rita To Greg Grueb for standing in the middle of Lincoln Avenue taking pictures of the town with cars zooming by on both sides of him. 8 Mardi Gras Recap By Janet Ortaggio, Trip Leader Thirty members came out to join in our fun-filled Mardi Gras Trip. The festivities started right away with the pub crawl on Friday afternoon & evening. Carl, Nancy, Jim and Sara were there from the start. JQ, Sally and I joined in at the tail end of the second stop - just in time to get some beads and tiaras Then we were off to bar 3, which just happened to be the tavern at the DeSoto Hotel. While there, we saw more members checking in, so that by pubs 4 and 5, we had a pretty big group Eventually, some headed out for dinner, while others continued along the pub crawl route - congratulations, Carl & Nancy We all ended up at Fried Green Tomatoes and met the latecomers. We danced and carried on, with a few finishing their evening with a late night party in Peggy and Tom's room. Saturday was a great day - cool, but sunny Many mingled at breakfast in the hotel courtyard before starting their day. Twelve members headed out to the slopes - JP and Scott arrived early on Friday to ski Chestnut, and the rest skied Sundown on Saturday. The rest took in the town, climbed the 250 stairs, The DeSoto Hotel, Galena, IL shopped, went to museums, and snowshoed. At 6:00 pm, our official 'Krewe' of Skunk Hollow Masquerade Ball began Using four hotel rooms, the Skunk Revelers started the evening with Hurricanes and hors d'oeuvres. The rooms were formally renamed St. Charles Avenue, Rue Royale, Toulouse, and Bourbon Street. The Revelers received party favors of Black and White Beads with our own Skunk Hollow Medallion. Then they began moving along from one room to another, experiencing our own streets of NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana). The costumes delighted all in attendance Some donned countless strands of beads and Mardi Gras clothing/accessories in the traditional colors of purple, gold and green. Jim Wood in his 'pimp' hat became our Skunk Hollow Relationship Coordinator; Lynn had a new hairdo - golden strands with green and purple beads - and with her clothing, could definitely have been working for Jim JP also went the risqué route, and with her 'external implants' was hanging out of her t-shirt all night. Everyone loved her outfit, and she was very groped by everyone in the bar that evening Sally dressed as a Skunk at Mardi Gras; Cindy was the Queen of the Mardi Gras, complete with her formal dress, long blonde hair, mask and flashing beads - no, she wasn't flashing for beads, her beads were actually lit up and flashing We also had Craw Mommy & Craw Daddy, Emeril (who was bamming everything in sight) and our top award winning Revelers masquerading as a Voodoo Doll (Peggy) and a very Anne Rice like Vampire (JQ). Near the end of our cocktail party, we all gathered in Jim and Shari's room, took pictures, and then paraded down the street to Benjamin's for our Pizza Party. After receiving more party favors, we showed off our costumes by parading around the restaurant and bar, with some of the Skunks playing 'When the Saints Go Marching In' on their recently acquired kazoos After dinner, we reigned over the bar and dance floor, bringing new life to the place. The band was really good, and again we all carried on well into the night - this time the room party was at Jim and Shari's On Sunday, we had a great brunch at the hotel before checking out. Afterwards we roamed the streets of Galena, and pondered - there's no way that they would be able to have such a great Mardi Gras without us. I think that by the end of the trip, everyone truly understood the meaning of Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler, and by next year, will be ready to do it again Thanks to all of the Revelers, who really made this trip Fun, Fun, Fun Page 8 Page 8

9 Mardi Gras Trip - Galena, IL S.H.I.T. AWARDS Skunk Hollow Indecent Tactics You Can Run, But You Can t Hide Award The Can I Get A Wake Up Call Award To Michael P. His request was for 7:00am, but it came a bit early at 2:00am when Mark arrived without a room key. To Sally. She was approached by one of the band members who said, You're a long way from Palatine, aren't you? She was recognized by a fellow employee I'm Too Sexy For My Hair Award To Lynn for her stylish masquerade costume. The Trapped In A Hurricane At Fried Green Tomatoes Award To JQ. She sucked a couple down and went down with them The Good Sport Award To Scott, who watched all the men and women grope his girlfriend all night. The Don't Hold Back Award To Lynn for entertaining the group with her sexy chair dancing using her boa as a prop. Gracie Award The Touch Me Feel Me Award To Janice. See The Good Sport Award. To Diane G. She turned the car over to Bud with just a little bit of gas, and they had a long way to travel with the low gas light on. They replenished the 20 gallon tank with 19.5 gallons and let out a sigh of relief. Whew The Teachers Pet Award To Terry for staying in on Saturday to grade papers for Jaci, so that she could go skiing. The Drinking Couple With A Skiing Problem Award To Nancy & Carl who managed to complete the entire pub crawl. The Relationship Coordinator Award To Jim W. Cars or Sex, he can sell it all The Hey Big Spender Award To JQ, who broke JO's shopping record and definitely had the most expensive trip this year. Page 9 Think Snow Page 9

We started the evening out with pizza from Garibaldi's which was very hot. This was good because the area assigned to us for our pizza party was very chilly. Even the bartender wore her coat After pizza, we got our lane and partner assignments and proceeded with our three games of bowling. The first game was the single bowl to try and get the highest score you could. For some of us we had to try and remember how to even bowl. I heard a couple of people say they couldn't remember which fingers go in the holes. But all of a sudden balls started flying down the lanes. Let the games begin. With lots of hooting and hollering the prizes for highest score went to Jim and Shari Wood. The needs most improvement awards went to Tom Wolos and Sarah Obal for the lowest scores. The second game was the Scotch Double, where the first partner throws the fist ball and the second partner picks up the pins left standing. This turned out to be quite a rousing game with strikes left and right. The third game was the Candlelight Bowl game of silly moves. There were several people who could not figure out how to skip down the alley and really had a hard time holding their partners bowling ball. But the best was the bowling between your partner's legs. Some choose to keep their back to their partners while others choose to face them so that they wouldn't accidentally get hit in the butt Everyone had a great time and thanks to all of you who came out and braved the weather to laugh and play with your friends.
