1 Skunk Hollow Ski & Snowboard Hollow Holler Monthly Newsletter Volume 46 Issue 01 Jan ESCAPE TO BOYNE WHILE THERE IS STILL TIME Boyne Mountain or Boyne Highlands Trip Leader, Lynn Grosse reports that there is still time to sign up for our weekend trip to Boyne Mt., Michigan, Friday Jan. 20th - Sunday Jan. 22nd. The trip includes round-trip bus transportation (with traditional bus beer, wine & pop libations); Two nights lodging at the Oak Park Ski Club Lodge; 2 breakfasts & 1 dinner; interchangeable 2-day lift ticket for either the Mountain or the Highlands; and NASTAR Racing! All this for $ Skunks, we are very lucky. Boyne ski /snowboard areas are close to home and offer the largest & finest skiing areas in the lower part of Michigan. Recently, both Ski Magazine & Snow Country Magazine voted Boyne Highlands the #1 ski area in the entire Midwest, with Boyne Mountain running a close second. The Mountain has a 500ft. vertical drop even greater at Boyne Highlands. Both areas offer all levels of skiing/snowboarding abilities. The ski schools offer traditional lessons (private or group) plus special workshops where skiers/boarders can view their lesson (or performance?) on video tape complete with instructor analysis. Plus, you get to keep the tape! (Wouldn t you just love to see Patrick Kilbourne s tape?) There s even special workshops on racing. (You get to keep that tape too!) Currently, the snow base at the Mountain is 75in. & 73in. at the Highlands. So get your act together. Escape to Boyne while there is still time. We ll ski/snowboard, eat, drink & be merry all week-end long. How lucky can we get? Call Lynne Grosse at or her at trip_me@msn.com & sign up! Inside This Issue: Trip Ads & Payment Schedules Cascade Trip Re-Cap Xmas Party Re-Cap Nastar Updates Safety Article Adventures In Travel Expo Other Stuff Blondie s Safety Tip of the Month Shut up! (Talking annoys skiers & boarders.) It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you re a fool than to open it & remove all doubt. Mark Twain

Go Skunks! Speaking of newsletters, it s been 6 months now since I ve taken over the position of Skunk Hollow newsletter editor and publisher. It has truly been, like all good things, a labor of love. In each newsletter, I ve tried to include all areas of Skunk infestation: our current ski/snowboard trip schedules, trip ads, recaps, pictures & SHIT awards; our wonderful social events (including Rob s infamous summer camping trips) ads, pictures & re-caps; our CMSC events;, Skunk meeting schedules/birthdays, & of course, important articles on skiing/boarding safety all with a little (very little) humor thrown in for laughs. I ve made every feeble attempt to write witty, entertaining Skunk adventure articles and hassled enough other skunks to also do the same. My philosophy for the newsletter is simple: Keep it all in the middle. You know, like a dead skunk in the middle... of the road. We don t lean left. We don t go right. We stay in the middle where all good Skunks should be. And if any of you Skunks out there think this newsletter stinks, well...too bad, tough you know what. You try putting one of these things together. It isn t just a matter of a cut and paste you know. It s hours of writing & re-writing, fact-finding & research, editing & reediting. It s photography & computer skills. It s page lay-outs, resource hunting & logistics. It s experimentation & repetition. It s labor and it s love. And I intend to stay... in the middle...with every one of you...every step of the way. CD Cheryl Dinwiddie Skunk Hollow Newsletter Editor

5 Volume 46 Issue 01 Hollow Holler Page 5 Cascade Mountain Drive-up, 2005 The snow was great, the people even greater. By Patrick Kilbourne The Skunk Hollow ski season kicked off on Fri. Dec. 9 th with members from the club arriving at Fitzgerald s around 4PM. Patrick & Lori arrived at 5PM, settled in & freshened up before heading out to dinner. After dinner, Lori retired for the evening saving herself for a weekend of skiing & partying. Patrick went off to party immediately. Shari & Jaci arrived at 10PM. By 11PM most everyone had made it to Fitzgerald s Motel. Dennis, Nettie & Patrick joined Derek & Randy for a late night drink or two at Nig s. Those two drinks turned into many & Skunks were soon showing the town of Wisconsin Dells how to party. Sat. morning came very early for a few people, Patrick to name one. He partied a little too much the night before. (So what else is new, Patrick?) But all the others were well on their way to Cascade for a day of excellent skiing. Patrick & Lori missed an exit & had to make a slight detour back to Cascade. Not as bad as what happened to Jaci and Shari however. With Jaci driving, they headed to Cascade via Eau Clair, WI. This took them 40 miles out of their way. Patrick was relieved to find out he wasn t the last one to arrive as if that mattered. Waiting for us at Cascade was one of our Milwaukee members, Dan Bossard who decided to join us for the day. It was good to see him. After skiing for an hour, word filtered in that JP was skiing with a Cascade ski patrol member, her friend from high school, Dot Havens. We all met up, skied, & had a great lunch. While Patrick was headed for the lounge he heard someone say they had just received a Skunk Hollow newsletter. Patrick stopped, turned around. The people recognized him from Ski Dazzle Ski Show! Patrick chatted with them for a few minutes & invited them to the Skunk lunch. They accepted & met the others. The Skunk s greeted them with a warm welcome. Everyone ate, then parted ways. It was good to meet potential members. Also, a big Hi to potential members, Rich & Felicia who we met on the slopes. As snowboarders, they were concerned the club would not accept them. The Skunks reassured them that they are more than welcome. Hope to see Felicia & Rich at a Skunk meeting. After skiing on Sat, (Cascade did not offer Nastar racing.), we went back to Fitzgerald s for a pizza party hosted by Patrick. Everyone ate pizza & talked about the day s events. Afterwards the group headed for the bars. First stop was The Sand Bar serving only beer & wine who cares they had a great pool table. Lori showed us how to play pool. Jaci learned quickly. Be careful when you play her next, she s quite the pool shark! Next, we hit Nig s. It was crowded & the shots were flowing. A shot of Tequila Rose started things off. We even got JP to do one. (Way to go JP!) By midnight some Skunks were back at the motel, but others continued to party. And then sometime between midnight & closing. a miracle happened. LORI GOT DENNIS (KATO) ON THE DANCE FLOOR! It was quite a sight. You should have been there! On Sun., we headed back home, skied-out & happy. The week-end was a success. The snow was great, the people even greater. Thank goodness no one got hurt, a little plastered maybe, but not hurt. Can t wait to do this again next year. KATO It s A Miracle!
