1 38 YEARS AND STILL GOING DOWNHILL. Gelandesprung Gazette February 2008 Hello everyone, Just in case you do not know, it is winter, which means skiing. And some good skiing we have. The trips I have been on have had great snow conditions, some of the best in years. Yes, even this last weekend on Big Snow II, temps around -4 to -22, Sunday morning. Dress for it and we had a great time, snow was awesome. By the time some of you read this the club will be on there way to Switzerland, what a trip. For the rest of you we still have room on the Boyne/Nub s Nob trip, Feb Sly Fox has room on their Marquette trip, Feb Other than that people the trips are done for the Midwest, so if you have not gone a trip yet this year now is the time to sign up for one, there is some fantastic skiing to be had. Don t forget are general meeting before Boyne, February 19,7:00, Sports Corner. All are welcome, refreshments served. The only other is the Banff trip coming March This trip is full. GET YOUR PASSPORT!!! Special note to this trip, we will have a pretrip general meeting, Tuesday March 4. At the Sports Corner, 7:00. Those on this trip should try to be there, Dick Wortiska, your fearless leader will have trip info along with your plane tickets, please be there. Others are welcome to attend. Refreshments here too. Folks don t know of much more to say, but this skiing year is going by fast. And fast it has been. Hope to see you on a trip or at the meeting. Till next month. General Meeting February 19th Sports Corner 500 Grant Street De Pere, WI 7:00 p.m. Pre-Trip Meeting for Banff Trip March 4th 7:00 p.m. at Sports Corner President. 2 The first trip of the season, to Marquette Mountain, took place December 29, It was a one-day trip, leaving early on Saturday morning with an almost full coach of 47 skiers aboard. We arrived at Marquette at about 11 am their time, and had time to take a quick warm-up run or two before the group NASTAR was held at noon. Twelve club members participated in the NASTAR race and eight medaled! We had four silvers and four bronzes. Our fearless president, Carl Williquette, was the fastest down the hill with a time of seconds. Other silver medalists were Ellen Olmstead, Bill Smith and Don Steffens. The bronze medalists were Mike Bast, Sheryl Brunette, Diane Coyle and Frank Wickham. After NASTAR it was time for lunch! Brats and chips were served at Border Shack, along with liquid refreshments, then we had a full afternoon of skiing. Skiing conditions were good - almost all the runs were open, even though it was early in the season. As people mostly behaved themselves, there were only four Obtuse Award nominees and none of the nominations were for something truly outrageous. Two nominations were related to bar activities, someone dropped a ski lock under the deck, and someone was nominated for having ancient ski equipment. Brenda Brunette, the winner, won a fruitcake for falling out of the bar on her way to have a cigarette. This trip was Tom and Colleen VanderLinden s last Midwest bus trip, as they are planning on moving to Florida and joining a ski club there for the next ski season. Gary Austin, the trip leader, gave them a miniature Lamers bus bank so that they could not only fondly remember their trips on the bus, but save their pennies for their western ski trips. We stopped for dinner in Escanaba, then watched the funny movie, Wild HOGs (or City Slickers on Harleys ), for the rest of the return trip, arriving safely back in DePere before 9 pm. If we could make a late nomination for the obtuse award, it would be for the two people who left equipment in the parking lot Saturday night. The hat and goggles have been claimed, but will the person who left their white Alpina ski boots please give us a call if you want them back? We had a great time. Thanks to everyone who helped out - we couldn t have done it without you! There are still openings on Sly Foxes' Marquette Weekend Trip, February 8-10th They are taking two buses. Cost is $260. Trip Details: Leaving "The Bar" on Lynndale Drive at 6:00pm SHARP Stopping at The SC Grand, DePere around 6:30pm Subs & refreshments provided on the way up Two nights lodging at The Holiday Inn, Marquette Two buffet breakfasts and one dinner at The Holiday Inn, Marquette Two day lift tickets Two trailside lunch cookouts Pizza party at Luigi s Sunday on the way home Return by 10:00pm Any questions, contact Dar Kramer at or darlene_kramer@hmco.com Send payments to: Sly Fox Ski Club P.O.
