4 Jackson Hole Trip Summary Sixty- one skiers traveled on separate days to Jackson Hole, Wyoming the first week in March. Due to airline restrictions we were limited to small group sizes. So we had three groups travelling, two on Saturday, March 2 from each of Green Bay and Appleton, and one from Green Bay on Sunday, March 3. In addition, several people drove or flew on their own to Wyoming. Flights went off essentially as planned; thankfully a delay in departure we experienced from Green Bay on Saturday was not long enough to cause us to miss our connecting flight. The Green Bay and Appleton travelers met in Minneapolis and flew into Jackson Hole together. After a short trip to the hotel to check- in, we had plenty of time that afternoon to experience what the town had to offer. The hotel, the 49er Inn & Suites, was comfortable and most welcoming to our group through the week. Many of us over the course of the week just had to sit on the bar stool saddles at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, or have a steak and listen to a live band at the Silver Dollar Bar. Jackson Hole Mountain lived up to its reputation as steep and challenging. We were all tired at the end of the day. Thankfully, there were no injuries more serious than a shoulder separation. Many of us suffered bumps and bruises, either from skiing or from walking on the ice- covered sidewalks in town. Surprisingly, our club experienced its serious injuries prior to departure. We had three skiers who had intended to come with us injure themselves so badly that they had to cancel their Jackson Hole reservations. We wish them a speedy recovery. Weather was warmer than expected and was a challenge for a few days. We had some snowy conditions, which our powder hounds loved, and one day we had white- out- like conditions due to snow and fog. One skier observed, I don t need a ski pole, I need a white cane with a red tip! Sadly, our planned side trip to Grand Targhee had to be cancelled due to a snowstorm. The road to the resort goes through Teton Pass that can be treacherous if the weather is bad.
5 There were plenty of things to do besides ski in the area, and it was fun to hear about everyone s experiences at the end of the day. Quite a few took a guided snow coach tour of Yellowstone, and many of us did a sleigh ride through the elk reserve. We also had cross- country ski opportunities that we took advantage of. There was plenty of shopping and many of us visited the several museums in the area. We had a pizza party on Wednesday night, which was held in the mezzanine area of an old theatre that had been converted into a restaurant. The pizza was fantastic and we all had a fun time. The farewell party was held on Friday night in our hotel, and we had a wonderful BBQ dinner catered for our group, along with a surprise cake given to us by the hotel. The obtuse award ceremony was fun, as always, and our trip leaders took time to thank several people who were especially helpful to the club over the course of the week. We ended the event with a raffle of several door prizes. Those of us travelling on Saturday through Minneapolis had some concern about a big weather system in the Midwest, which threatened to delay or cancel flights. Four of our group decided to leave one day early to avoid that situation. Happily, all of our flights, both Saturday and Sunday, went off as scheduled and everyone got home safely. Jackson Hole may be a destination for us again in the future, and the 49er Inn & Suites has offered us a free wild- meat BBQ if we return!
