1 March 2016 Beaver Creek was a great ski week!! Dick Wortiska and Al Gardapee did a wonderful job in the preparation from booking with Southwest Airlines (who should be commended for their service), to planning fun activities such as a wine & cheese party, directions on how to get to Vail, a fun chili cook-off, etc. It was terrific! We all came back safe & sound with great memories to share. Our Spring Banquet is scheduled for April 22nd and as the temperature increases in March, so too our price for the Spring Banquet must increase to $ The Woods has increased their prices, so we must follow suit. The Spring Banquet is also the time for elections. This year the Vice President and Treasure s positions are up for re-election. If you would like to throw your hat in the ring, please let one of the Board members know in advance or at the Banquet. Here is a brief description of what each position does: Vice President Vice President Perform the duties of the Perform president the in duties his/her of absence. the president in his/her absence. The CMSC Seminar is May 14th this year and we will need to know if you are interested in going by April 8th. Dick Wortiska, trip. chair@gelandesprung.org, is our point person again this year. We are changing our policy to match what Sly Fox does, which is: If you would like to go, we will need you to send a check of $25.00 to secure your slot. After the weekend, you will be refunded this money. (Typically Gelandesprung has paid for this, but the Board has decided to be consistent with the Sly Fox policy.) The Board has decided to invest in a new computer for the Treasurer. The computer we currently have is wracked with viruses making it difficult for Jeanine to do her job in a timely fashion. A committee (Jeanine Bosdech, Adam Hanson, Frank Wickham and Tom Piette) was formed to investigate the purchase. You need to consider the stronger sunshine, changing snow conditions, and warmer temperatures. These tips will help you make sure your spring skiing is enjoyable and safe! Always wear sunscreen! Wearing sunscreen is a must during spring skiing. When your skin has been covered all winter long, the bright spring sun can easily cause you to burn. So, make sure that any uncovered parts of your face (such as your nose, around your eyes, or even your lips) are covered with a sunscreen protectant. Stay hydrated. During spring skiing, temperatures may rise and drinking water is important - especially if you re skiing at high altitudes! Make sure you drink plenty of water. Adjust your stance for spring snow. When skiing in spring snow, ski more solidly by keeping a balanced, even weight on each foot. Consider investing in a lesson to learn how to perfect your skiing on spring snow, because it will teach you things that you will be able to use each spring, year after year. Wear your goggles or sunglasses. The bright spring sun calls for good eye protection, so wearing your ski goggles is a must. Athletic sunglasses will also protect your eyes against the sun and make sure you can see well. Wear the right gear. During warm spring temperatures, any skier will overheat in a heavy winter parka. Make sure you have a lighter jacket (or even a fleece!) for sunny days. A light, waterproof jacket is perfect for days where there may be rain. Get your skis tuned-up for spring. Spring snow can be difficult and will slow you down, so a spring wax will make your skiing much smoother. If you have any Helpful Tips you want to share with the GSC members, please forward them to newsletter@gelandesprung.org. These tips can be anything you feel would help out skiers/boarders. 3 Lutsen New Years Trip We started our drive up at 11 am on New Years day and arrived at Grand Marais about 7:30 pm. The trip theme was best packer outfit and many people participated but no one could beat Brian Mudd as he was dressed in packer garb from head to toe. He even had packer long underwear on! Everyone that participated received a prize (thank Mr. Mudd for that) but Brian Mudd got the grand prize of Apple iphone accessories from me. Unlike last years trip, the temps this year were just about perfect for skiing in the Midwest. The new 8-person gondola was warm, comfortable and fast and provided no more waiting in line at the end of the day to get back to the main lodge from Moose Mountain. The weather leading up to this year s Lutsen trip was not favorable with rain and warm temperatures, but the snow conditions were good and the hill was about 85% open. After skiing on Sunday many of us gathered at Sven and Ole s for pizza and to watch the last regular season packer game. Even though the packers did not win it was still a fun night. Monday morning, we packed up and headed down to Duluth to Ski at Spirt Mountain. I think I speak for everyone when I say we had a pleasant surprise. Spirit Mtn. was in very good shape and the hill was much bigger than we expected. Because it was a weekday and school was in session we pretty much had the hill to ourselves. After a great day skiing at Spirit we headed back to Green Bay. On the way back we presented our Obtuse Award nominations and this year the Obtuse was won by Cindy Randall for stopping the lift at Moose Mountain after sitting on Ken Noland s lap! Thank you to all who helped Colleen and me with the trip. We had a great group of people and it was fun skiing with everyone again! Frank & Colleen

4 Beaver Creek Trip The Gelandesprung Ski Club went to Beaver Creek, CO for the out west trip this year, the dates being February 20 to people signed up for the trip, and it was a great group from the Gelandesprung and Sly Fox clubs. Saturday was our travel day, with the largest portion of the group busing from Green Bay or Appleton to Midway airport in Chicago. There was only a slight delay as one of the buses had a nonfunctioning heater and had to be changed, but all worked out well and we arrived at Midway with plenty of time. Our airline was Southwest and they had everything well planned. We landed in Denver on schedule and all the luggage made it as well. We loaded our busses and made our stop for supplies at King Soupers and Apple Jacks. Then it was on to The Borders Lodge in Beaver Creek and we got checked in. Borders Lodge is a huge and recently remodeled condo complex and it is beautiful. They have a pool and two hot tubs and a nice staff of personnel to run the complex. There is a ski storage area and then out the door is a lift to take you up the mountain, and you can ski back to the door at the end of the day. There is also a complimentary shuttle to take us to the village transportation center. This makes easy access for the main part of the mountain or to catch the bus to Vail. In the evening it will get you close to the dining and night activities. That evening there was a complimentary wine and cheese reception in the conference area. This is where the trip leader distributed the lift tickets. Unfortunately the representatives from the mountain did not make it so we missed out on the orientation, but were able to figure out what we had to do. Sunday was our first day of skiing and most people stayed at Beaver Creek and got familiar with this mountain. Lot of people were surprised at how large an area this is. Our pass was also good at Vail and during the week most of the group traveled there also to enjoy their mountain. Monday evening there was a pizza party in the conference room. Pizzas of all different types were catered in and people brought their own beverages and we all had a great time. Tuesday was our powder day. We woke to as much as 12 inches of the fresh stuff on some parts of the mountain. I do not need to say how much fun this is, but on powder days it is surprising how fast it gets skied out, so ski fast and enjoy it as long as you can. For the rest of the week we then had groomed slopes, but they were great because of the new snow pack on top. Wednesday was the chili cook off night. This is an event the club has been doing Continued on page 5

5 Beaver Creek Trip (continued) for a number of years, but this year there only three entries in the contest, but people brought a lot of snacks to pass around and pizzas were ordered so we all ate well and had an enjoyable evening. The best chili award went to Gary Delveaux. was the trip leader for attaching the wrong file to the letter that was sent to the trip participants. Tom Sitter and Dick Wortiska (Obtuse winner) Chili Contestants: Gary Delveaux (Winner), John Wauters (2nd place), Sherri Gardapee (3rd place) Friday night was the farewell dinner which was at the Dusty Boot in Beaver Creek village. This is a very nice place and we had our own private area. The wait staff was very attentive of our beverage orders and the bar-b-que ribs and chicken were served buffet style. The food was excellent, a lot of people commented on how much they liked it. After dinner we went over the departure information. Bob Schmidt and Paul Pendowski got rewarded for stopping to help a small child that had run off the trail and was trapped in the woods. They heard the faint calls for help, went to investigate and helped the child out of the woods. Then saw that the child was reunited with the parents. First time pins were handed out to the 14 members that traveled with us for the first time to our out west destination. Then it was time for the obtuse award. The winner Saturday morning was up early for our departure. Again we had two buses, but only one was on time. We got that one loaded and on its way. When we got to the airport, check in went really well, so when the second bus arrived, there was plenty of time to get these people checked through. Again, Southwest needs to be complimented on how efficiently they handled everything. The flight to Milwaukee arrived on time and the Lamers buses brought us back to our start point. This brings this adventure to a close. It was a great week, had a lot of fun, good food and refreshment, got to meet some great new people, who I hope will join us again. There were no serious injuries, just a few minor bumps and bruises. Thank you to everyone that went on the trip, you are what makes all the work enjoyable. Also thank you to all the people that stepped up to help in any way, it is greatly appreciated. Also a thank you to the board for letting me run the trip, hopefully they will let me do it again. Your trip leaders, Dick Wortiska Al Gardapee
