The 45th Anniversary Committee did a wonderful job decorating the room with crepe paper and balloons. The dinner of chicken, pork and fish presented by The Woods was exceptional! Veronica s cakes were absolutely delicious, as is always. Neil & Kris Urban from Norway Mountain came & talked about the exciting changes they ve made to the hill please be sure to go to Norway s website for more information. After Sam spoke about Davos, Switzerland and Dick gave us details about South Lake Tahoe, DJ Dan & Company started spinning records. Between songs, he gave away our door prizes. We had quite a selection of prizes: from lift tickets to beer mugs to gift baskets. The final door prize was a season pass to Norway Mountain. Sam Fontaine s name was picked what a lucky guy!! We will be having a Christmas party in conjunction with our pre-marquette and pre-lutsen trip meeting on December 23rd. This event will be held at The Woods. We still have room on all of our trips, (Marquette, Lutsen and Boyne) including about 10 seats for South Lake Tahoe. I can t wait for the snow to fly Let s Go Skiing!!! Julie P.S. 2 On Sept. 13 th 30 members of the Gelandesprung and Sly Fox Ski Clubs went on an Alaskan cruise of the inside passage. This was the first big trip of a non-skiing nature. Our point of departure was Seattle, Washington. Everyone arrived at the cruise dock and checked in with plenty of time. The ship left port at 4 PM as scheduled. The first evening we had a number of tables reserved in the main dining room so the group could get together to meet all of the other members. It was our first dining experience on the cruise ship and it was good. After the meal everyone enjoyed the remainder of the evening. Sunday was a full day under power. It was a great opportunity to explore the ship. We were on the Norwegian Cruise Line and the ship was the Jewel. It was large, being just a few feet short of one thousand and fifteen decks high. The state rooms could accommodate about 2000 guests. There were over a dozen bars spread out through the whole ship. There were also over a dozen dining options available, which included a huge buffet and many sit down type of options where you could order off the menu. These were part of the original cruise package, but they also offered some upscale specialty dining options, which did have a small upcharge from the main package price. There was a casino and a showroom with good entertainment in the evening. They offered shopping on the ship as well. There was not a shortage of things to keep a person occupied. Monday brought us to our first port of call, Ketchikan. Back in history this area was home to a large native population. This early culture still shows and is being preserved. The most notable part of this early culture was the Totem poles. It was a means of communication as well as a marker of territory and tribes or clans. Also, there was a great deal of shopping close to the cruise docks, which is typical. We were at the end of the season and most places had huge sales. With a sharp eye some good bargains could be found. Tuesday morning we got to view Sawyer Glacier. The fjords are deep in this area so we were able to get remarkably close for viewing. The deep blue color of the ice is amazing. Also a close look at the glacier showed a lot of rock and dirt material, indicating how much action the glacier did on the valley as it flowed down. Tuesday afternoon brought us to port in Juneau, the capital of Alaska. We rode past the capital buildings and the governor s mansion on our way to our shore excursions. They are not as impressive as what some other states have, but that is what works for them. There are a lot of glaciers in this area, and at sea this is a popular whale watching spot because this was the time of the year for them to be here. There were a lot of excursions available here and I know people did a lot of different things.

3 Wednesday we were in Skagway. It became a boom town in the mid 1890 s because it was the gateway to the Klondike gold fields. As any mining boom town it had a pretty turbulent history for a few years. Here the newly arriving miners would stock up with one year of supplies which the Canadian government required to cross into Canada. Then it was the long uphill journey through very rugged country to cross into Canada, which still left a long distance to the Klondike. These men had to be tough. We took a train ride up the canyon, which these miners did not have the option of doing. It was beautiful for us, but I am sure back then they did not notice that as they struggled to make the top. Thursday we spent the entire day at sea as we returned south. It was the only day of unfavorable weather and the waves did rock the ship a bit. When you realize that this area is one of the wetter areas in the world, and to have only one day of unpleasant weather, we were very lucky. When we would make our stops at the ports the local people would thank us for bringing the nice weather as they very seldom see the sun because of the clouds and rain. Friday we stopped at Victoria Island. The biggest attraction here is the Butchart Gardens. It is indeed one of a kind. We were there in mid-september and still the color, beauty and numbers of flowers were amazing. It is hard to believe that at one time this was a depleted rock quarry. Our bus journey took us through Victoria and the bus driver was an excellent guide pointing out places of interest and giving us the history of the area. The cruise brought us to Vancouver early Saturday morning and the final stop of our journey. Here we left the ship and said our good byes as many people had made their own transportation arrangements. As we each made our way home our thoughts were full of the many experiences that we had, the sights that we got to see, and the great service we received on the ship. It was a wonderful trip and I was glad to be your leader. Hopefully more events of this type will be in the future. Thank you. Dick Wortiska

4 Gelandesprung Ski Club - Fall Bike Tour II Despite the weather on Saturday Oct. 4 th this years bike ride was a great success and a lot of fun too. Early in the week the weather forecast looked very good, the weatherman was calling for sunny skies and temps in the mid 50 s. When I awoke Saturday morning the temperature was 38 degrees and it had just started raining. However, that did not deter all. Out of an original group of 17 riders, 8 of us decided to brave the weather and do the ride; rain, wind and all. We left my house at 11:45 and made our way to our first stop, Kitty O Reillys Pub. We all had a cold beverage and some enjoyed a bloody Mary. From Kitty s we made our way to the lookout tower in Potawatomi Park, we all made the climb to the top and took a quick picture, except Mike Bast. He was busy drinking a beer that Al and Sherry gave him. Al & Sherry Gardape e and Neils Jensen camped at a nearby campground and drove up to the tower to meet us. We managed to get a group picture of the bikers at the bottom of the tower. From Left to right, Mary Strebel, Devin DeBaker (future club member), Frank Wickham, Deb Matz, John Klebes, Sybille Nickel, Mike Bast and Dean Hoegger. From the tower we made our way to Water Front Mary s where Mike Komoroske, Shelly Wickham and DD Knutson met us. We stayed at Water Front for almost 2 hours hoping the rain would stop, no such luck. We pushed our way back to my house, cleaned up and went to Sonny s Pizzeria for dinner. All in all it was a very fun day. Thanks to everyone for coming out. Frank
