1 Gelandesprung Gazette May In this issue: Beaver Creek Re-Cap Morzine, France & Paris Sign-up Timber Rattlers Game & Tailgate Sign-up May Birthdays Save the Date!!! Summer Picnic August 4th If there is something you would like in the newsletter, please submit it to me by the 20th of the month. My address is: Keep informed and update your ski pals on what you're doing on the ski club's Facebook page! Click here to visit the site: QUICK S QUIPS Thanks to all that came to the banquet at The Woods on Friday the 13 th of April. The food and service was very good and everyone had a good time. Thanks to all who shared ideas! I think we are already pumped for an exciting ski season to come. A trip to France, a possible train ride to Whitefish Mountain and our Midwest trips give us a lot to look forward to. It seems like the planning for the next year starts earlier every year. In a few weeks, a group from our club will be going to Chicago to get ideas and confirm details on trips in the works. I would like to thank Judy Van Caster for the great job she did as our Vice President. Her hard work and humor will be missed at our board meetings. We look forward to working with Julie Steltz as the new VP. Also thanks to Dwayne Whitfield for continuing on as Treasurer. He does such an awesome job! Those are going to be big shoes to fill when he leaves the board. The Don Steffens Memorial Ski Trash award went to Senny Wegner for skiing the most days and making every Gelandesprung ski trip. He has won this award several times already. Second place went to Mike Komoroske who unfortunately had his season end short with an injury. We wish him fast healing and look forward to skiing with him next season. Pam Lewandowsi won Gwanda the Gelandegnome for the Obtuse of the year award for multiple nominations and crazy behavior. Both awards are travelling awards passed on to the winner from year to year. Display your awards proudly as you may only have them for a year! Put on your calendar the club picnic for August 4. A sign- up sheet will appear in next month s newsletter. The Sly Fox club is doing a Timber Rattlers baseball game, see the sign up sheet in this newsletter. Don t forget that sign-up for France begins in May again the sign-up sheet is in this newsletter. Have a great rest of the spring and I hope to see you soon. Ron
2 Beaver Creek Report Our last trip of the was to Beaver Creek, Colorado and 34 of us left early Saturday, March 24 from Green Bay airport. Luckily, we had enough people with Delta credit cards, that we all got one free checked bag. Thanks folks! In Denver we picked up 3 more independent travelers and boarded our bus to Beaver Creek. There we picked up 3 more very independent travelers and we were for 40 strong. After stashing the luggage in our rooms, The Borders Lodge, our condo host, sponsored a wine and cheese reception. The Borders Lodge was certainly one of the most luxurious places we ve stayed at in recent memory. Right out the back door was the Elkhorn triple chair. A spacious lobby, front desk, exercise room, ski lockers, outdoor pool and hot tub. All of the rooms had washer/dryers, fire places and all of the bells and whistles. There was also shuttle service up the hill to the village and main ski area. After dinner we walked around the village, sat by an open fire where kids were toasting marshmallows and watched the groomers doing their thing. Next morning, oops! No power in our condo building. No power in the whole village. Yet the lifts were running. Apparently Beaver Creek has a good back-up power. Our problem was how to make coffee. Ah Hah! There is a gas grill on the back lobby patio, so we boiled water on the side burner and hand dripped it. Then, voila, the power came back on and everyone is happy. The weather was sunny and warm the entire week. Even though the lifts opened at 8:30, there was no reason to go out before 9:30 as everything was frozen solid and just beginning to thaw out then. The skiing was great from 10:00 till 1:30 depending on how the slopes faced the sun. By the end of the week, we all had learned how to follow the sun. At the end of the day we found our way to the trail back to the condo. Since the slope had a southern exposure, the trail was melting rapidly and the snow got to be fairly rotten near the end. Well, we ordered ski-in/ski-out condos, and by god, we skied in! From now on we re taking the shuttle down from the village. On Monday, a lot of people headed to Vail to ski; our lift passes were good at both Vail and Beaver Creek. About 2:30, we got a phone call with bad news. Mike Komoroske had a broken leg. We stopped by the Vail Medical Center and found him ready to be wheeled down the hall to the X-ray room. He said he really didn t know how it happened. He hit a small bump and had a freak fall. Any way, he was on pain meds and we said Later and off he went to X-ray. Tuesday at 5:30, Deb prepared a Fondue Apres-Ski Party in the condo common room. We had both cheese and chocolate fondue, bread, wine, fruit, sausage. The talk, of course, was about Mike. His roomies, Scott and Jeanne Stilp and Dick Wortiska were in touch with Mike and would bring him over things he needed. Latest update: rods and screws were put in. His surgeon is the head Physician of the US Women Alpine Ski Team. If you have to break a leg, break it in Vail. Wednesday and Thursday went by in similar fashion. Every day was sunny and warm. Thursday the trail behind the condo was closed. We were now just ski-out. Mike was scheduled to get out of the hospital on Friday. We re having our farewell dinner Friday night at Coyote Café and hoping he ll be able to make it. The skiing has been pretty predictable: ice 8:30 to 9:30, corn snow 10:00 to 1:30, mashed potatoes after by 2:00. That s OK, we re worn out by 2:00 on most days. Between Vail and Beaver Creek the choices were huge. Well Friday is here and Mike is not getting sprung until Saturday. After consulting with the hospital staff, it was decided Mike would be more comfortable riding in a CME van to the airport than trying to get on our charter bus. Our tour operator, Winter Ski and Sport, got bulkhead seats for Mike on the way home and golf cart service at Minneapolis Airport when we changed planes. So that brings us to Coyote Café. We had a Mexican dinner followed by Lunar nominations. Discretion prevents me from giving you the name of the winner, but it seems she forgot to pick up her boot bag at Denver Airport. So hubby had to arrange they be located and delivered for a nominal fee. And we all know it was really his fault. So, Beaver Creek is in the books. Not exactly roughing it. (The Beaver creek Slogan). Thanks for all the help President Deb gave me, especially organizing our fondue party. I also want to especially thank Dick Wortiska and Jeanne and Scott Stilp for all the help they gave their roomy, Mike. Also to Gladys Hansen, traveling nurse, and finally to someone who was not on the trip: Cindy Rendall, who met us at the airport with her station wagon converted into an ambulance to take Mike off our hands. Get well soon Komo! Sam Fontaine
