1 November 2015 The Fall Banquet was a great evening for the start of our Ski Season! Jenny Lunde, our Web Meister, put together a great slide show for everyone to view during cocktails and dinner. The food that The Woods provided for the dinner was delicious, as is usual. During the presentation from the President, the internet was rather slow, so those who were at the banquet will have to wait with bated breath to see the details of the website presented at the Spring Banquet. Adam Hanson, our Social Events Coordinator, had us all stand up and look under our chairs to find door prize winners. Some of the door prizes were hats, t-shirts and a free hotel room from Canada s Sun Peaks resort. Our guest speaker, Ben Herdrich, from Wind Power Windsurfing & Kiting Center from Fond du Lac, told us of their plans to host Snowkite racing. This involves racing around a course on Gelandesprung Gazette JULIE S JIVE Going Downhill since 1969! P.O. Box 10422, Green Bay, WI either skis or snowboards, while flying a kite. It sounds like it would be quite exciting! Our trip leaders are falling into place: For the Lutsen trip, Frank Wickham is the trip leader, we are looking for someone to be his assistant. The trip leader for Boyne is Gary Wisneski and his assistant is Dean Hoegger. We are in need of trip leaders for our day trip to Marquette for their Spring Carnival. We were a little late in organizing a showing at Zeller s Annual Ski & Snowboard Consignment Sale on October 24th, so could not put it in last month s Newsletter. Dan Goudreau was kind enough to volunteer for the event on short notice to distribute brochures and trip business cards to those attending. P. S. If you see a trip you like, contact that club to see if there are openings available. Warm-up Stretches before Downhill Skiing Before skiing you should always do some form of warm-up stretches. Preparing muscles and joints for activity helps prevent injury. Below are a few exercises that can be done before hitting the slopes. Dry Land Stretch #1. Find an even surface that runs perpendicular to a wall. With feet spread shoulder-width apart, point them straight ahead so that six inches to a single foot remain between the wall and your toes. Place both hands as high as they will reach on the wall and slightly arch the lower back. Hold this extended position without lifting the feet off the ground. Dry Land Stretch #2. Sit on a flat surface and extend both legs out as far as they will reach. With ankles touching, reach toward the inside of the feet and try to hold on for an extended period of time. Next, reach and hold on to the outside of the feet. Finally, point the toes straight in the air and reach for the top portion of the feet. Another set of stretches will take place with the boots and skis fastened in order to specifically target the most commonly used muscles during the activity. Ski Stretch #1. With the insides of the skis touching, reach straight down and touch the outsides of the ski boots. Keep both legs fully extended. Ski Stretch #2. Stand on a flat surface away from any downhill slope. While fastened into the skis place the inner rails together and slowly assume a squatting position. Continue to stand up and squat down repeatedly to stretch the quadriceps muscles as well as the hamstrings. Perform this stretch multiple times with the skis touching and with the skis approximately shoulder-width apart. If you have any Helpful Tips you want to share with the GSC members, please forward them to newsletter@gelandesprung.org. These tips can be anything you feel would help out skiers/boarders. For more Helpful Tips go to FAQ & Helpful Tips on our website. Snowboarding is an activity that is very popular with people who do not feel that regular skiing is lethal enough. - Dave Barry

3 SKI SEASON TIPS Author Unknown Ski Season is here. The following is a list of exercises to help you prepare Soak your gloves and store them in the freezer after every use. Fasten a small, wide rubber band around the top half of your head before you go to bed each night. If you wear glasses, begin wearing them with glue smeared on the lenses. Throw away a hundred dollar bill - now. Find the nearest ice rink and walk across the ice 20 times in your ski boots carrying two pairs of skis, accessory bag and poles. Pretend you are looking for the bus. Sporadically drop things. Place a small but angular pebble in your shoes, line them with crushed ice, and then tighten a C-clamp around your toes. Buy a new pair of gloves and immediately throw one away. Secure one of your ankles to a bedpost and ask a friend to run into you at high speed. Go to McDonald s and insist on paying $12.50 for a hamburger. Be sure you are in the longest line. Clip a lift ticket to the zipper of your jacket and ride a motorcycle fast enough to make the ticket lacerate your face. Drive slowly for five hours - anywhere - as long as it s in a snowstorm and you re following an 18-wheeler. Fill a blender with ice, hit the pulse button and let the spray blast your face. Leave the ice on your face until it melts. Let it drip into your clothes. Visit your local butcher and pay $45 to sit in the walk-in freezer for a half an hour. Afterwards burn two $50 dollar bills to warm up. Dress up in as many clothes as you can and them proceed to take them off because you have to go to the bathroom. Slam your thumb in a car door. Don t go see a doctor. 16. Repeat all of the above every Saturday and Sunday until it s time for the real thing!
