The preparations and planning for our week at Sun Peaks is coming together nicely thanks to Tom Piette, our trip leader and Ron Quick, the assistant trip leader. It is snowing at Sun Peaks; their weather forecast indicates: An upper low currently off the Washington coast will move into the North Cascades by this afternoon. I love traveling to new places!! There is snow in the forecast a week before we arrive almost every day! Today, the following trails have been groomed it looks like a great selection. We still have seats available on our weekend trip to Mont Ripley/Mount Bohemia in February. Mont Ripley has 6 green runs, 7 blue runs, 10 Gelandesprung Gazette Going Downhill since 1969! P.O. Box 10422, Green Bay, WI black diamonds and 2 double blacks a little something for everyone. The town of Houghton is a quaint little place with lots of activity since it is the home of Michigan Tech. Sign up soon!! Parking will now be available for all of our trips in 2 places. The Bar in Appleton and at The Woods in Green Bay (where we hold our Banquets and Board meetings). We are in need of a trip leader for our Mont Ripley/ Mount Bohemia mid-west trip. If you are interested, take a look at the website, Gelandesprung. org, under Member Resources. There is an updated comprehensive Trip Leader Guide that gives a great overview of what is involved. Ninety percent of deaths are from slides triggered by the victim or members of the victim s group. There is only a 30% chance of survival when buried by an avalanche. However, there s good news. Avalanches aren t magic. If you know what to look for and what to avoid, you can drastically decrease your chances of getting caught. Having the knowledge to make good decisions doesn t help unless you put it to use. Conditions may change throughout the day and so should your evaluations. Stay alert to changes in aspect, elevation, or weather that may change snow stability. Your initial assessment of the danger may not be accurate after you travel even a short distance. Don t venture into backcountry without the proper tools. Carry a beacon, probe, and shovel and know how to use them. Make sure your partners also know how to use them so they can find you and help if disaster strikes. Always be prepared to execute a rescue. Do everything you can to not get caught. Always have an exit plan in case an avalanche begins. If caught, do everything you can to avoid being buried. Remember, if buried, your chance of survival is only 30%. If your partner gets caught, do not go for help! You have only 15 minutes for a good chance to recover someone alive. Watch your partner as long as you can to establish a last-seen point where you can begin your search and yell to alert others. Despite the dangers, the lure of fresh turns and promise of backcountry solitude will continue to draw people into avalanche terrain. Know that these rewards never come without risk. 3 Sun Peaks Update: As you know, the sign-up period for Sun Peaks began early in August. The signups so far indicate strong interest in a trip to a new location with excellent skiing and the amenities for a great vacation. One item for considerations is purchase travel insurance for yourself. You can insure yourself for medical emergencies and also for travel problems or trip cancellation. One option for you to consider is through Travel Protectors LLC. This insurance is offered through our association with CMSC. Contact myra@travelprotectors. com. Winter Ski and Sport also offers travel insurance. Please review your situation to determine if you would like to purchase insurance. ELECTION NIGHT Gelandesprung Ski Club Elections will be held during the Spring Banquet Friday, April 27, 2018 All members are encouraged to attend Anyone interested can contact the current position holders and to let us know by April 17th of your decision. Vice President Perform the duties of the president in his/ her absence. Coordinate all aspects of the mid-west trips. Maintain contact for trip leaders. Treasurer Maintain and report monthly on the financial transactions using Quickbooks on the club provided laptop computer. Reconcile the bank accounts monthly. 4 Gelandesprung Ski Club of Green Bay is going to Sun Peaks, British Columbia Sun Peaks is the second largest ski area in Canada. It includes three mountains with excellent skiing for all levels. Highlights include: Ski in-ski out; in fact you can ski through town Dry powdery snow Great terrain for all levels of skiers on 4,270 acres of skiable terrain 16 Gladed runs are identified on the map; most are blue runs Two alpine bowls We will stay at the beautiful Grand Hotel In-house mountain-view pool, boutiques, eateries and nightclub The basic trip will include: Seven nights at the Grand Hotel including a full hot breakfast each morning Two people per room (King bed or two queens) Five of six day ski pass 6th day of skiing for $50 An après ski event Farewell party Thursday February 1 Two groups will go: 30 People Jan. 26 to Feb People Jan. 27 to Feb. 3 The cost is $1,695 per person for the Saturday to Saturday trip.
