2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Statement Windhover s mission is to offer classes, workshops and performances in dance and related arts to the Northshore community by bringing outstanding artists to teach and perform; to create a nurturing environment where original and creative work can be developed and presented; to continue to forge strong ties to the community by including local artists in all aspects of performances, and promote original works based on community issues and interests. Background Statement In 1967, Herbert and Ina Hahn purchased the last farm in Pigeon Cove, Rockport, Massachusetts. Herb single-handedly converted the barn into a dance studio, the stable into a library, sheds and out-buildings into dormitories and the main house to function as a dining-kitchen complex. A performing arts camp for teenage girls opened in the summer of 1968 and during its seventeen years was filled to capacity. During that period new buildings were added including a chapel/theater, a second dance studio, and an outdoor stage for dance and theater performances. The place was named "Windhover" after a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins, whose "Windhover" is a falcon (or seagull) that hovers in the air against the wind, and symbolizes the soaring of man's imagination and the spiritual quest that informs art. In 198 Windhover became a 51(c) (3) non-profit foundation, and in 1986, changed its focus to a performing arts center. As such it was able to expand its mission to include more citizens of the Northshore community and to focus on creating works that reflected the community. Since 1986 it has offered classes and workshops in dance, music and theater for adults and children as well as teenagers, and to local residents as well as boarding students. Teachers have been recruited from artists outstanding in their respective fields: Betty Jones and Risa Steinberg of the Limon Company; Lynn Simonson, master of jazz dance technique; David Szepessy, world-renowned cellist; jazz musician and composer, Joe Mulholland;director/playwright George Angell, to name a few. Windhover s works have included the creation and re-creation of original choreography, dance/ theater pieces and full-fledged musicals with original music. In addition, the Windhover Dance Company has performed reconstructions of the dances of Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, and has been the only company dedicated to the work of these pioneer modern dancers in New England. In 26 Windhover presented "A New Dance For America" a symposium focusing on the legacy of modern dance pioneer, Doris Humphrey. Ina Hahn s documentary on Humphrey followed and, "A New Dance for America" premiered at the 211 Dance On Camera Festival in New York City. Ina Hahn and the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre are now collaborating on The Poor Man s Paradise, a documentary based on Cape Ann s quarries. 2

3 Impact Statement Ina Hahn created a 8 minute documentary: A New Dance for America: The Choreography, Teachings and Legacy of Doris Humphrey, which includes dozens of interviews and dance footage from Windhover s Symposium on Doris Humphrey in 26 and was chosen to open the Dance on Camera Film Festival at Lincoln Center, NYC in 211. We are continuing to promote this film to schools, dance academies, universities, to students and the general public. Windhover dancers reconstructed Made in Folly Cove and The Artists of Lanesville with narration by Pat Kane Earle and choreography by Ina Hahn. The works were performed by Windhover dancers under the direction of Carol Burnham at the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester to a sold-out audience.our goal is to perform these community based dances at Windhover every other year. The documentary was also shown at The Cape Ann Museum, and enthusiastically received. Windhover s week-long intensive summer dance workshops for teenagers have been filled each summer. They have been highly successful in the quality of the teaching, the enthusiasm of the students, and financially. The workshops have been held for 15 years. In the summer of 212 the Dusan Tynek DanceTheatre of NYC created and performed the first Quarry Dance at the quarry in Halibut Point State Park. The performances were well-attended and received much publicity and praise from audiences and critics alike. There have been two additional quarry dances created and performed at private quarries in 213 and 214. Now in 215, we will create a 4th Quarry Dance. The work has so far been funded by The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation. We look forward to another new quarry dance this summer. Windhover plans to raise the necessary funding to develop and present "Quarry Dance 4" as well as continue work on a documentary film based on the Quarry Dances, titles: " The Poor Man's Paradise." Needs Statement We need a more stable financial base. Our yearly summer dance performances, which have been presented for decades and receive top reviews for their quality, are in financial trouble. The expenses of hiring a top NYC company, Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre, a local dance company Forty Steps Dance, and other local dancers as well as technical personnel, are not covered by our ticket sales. We charge very low prices--$15 for seniors students and $2 for adults--because we want to make the performances accessible to all. For this reason we depend on grants and other funding to produce these dance performances. In the past few years, we have received few corporate grants; while we do raise money through individual contributions, they go towards maintaining Windhover s buildings and property, and in the past they have gone towards scholarships to students in our dance workshops. We need to attract more workshops; in the past, our seasons were filled with them, from Buddhist retreats to a 5-week arts program for children. In order to be more pro-active in publicizing our good work, to apply for corporate funding and government grants, we need to hire staff for publicity and outreach. We need to keep recruiting additional volunteers as well. 3

4 CEO/Executive Director Statement It is part of our mission to express through the arts the need to preserve our precious resources, the environment, and the vitality of our shared communities. Windhover s mission has been not only to celebrate the arts, and, in particular, the arts of dance and theater, but to connect these arts to the community and our environment. As a result, we have produced original works over the past many decades that center on the environment and community. Some of the many examples are: The Battle for Pigeon Cove Harbor, a dance/music drama that highlighted the ongoing battle in 1997 between the fishermen and developers. This focused community attention on the issues and resulted in the inappropriate development being stopped and the fishermen retaining their rights to the harbor. A musical/danced adaptation of Percy McKaye s Dogtown Common, to celebrate the unique history and landscape of the interior of Cape Ann, a special place celebrated by many artists including Marsden Hartley. In 21 we produced Made in Folly Cove, which used dance and narration to celebrate The Folly Cove Designers an amazing group of mostly, women, who, under the direction of Virginia Burton Demetrios, formed a collaborative and created fabric designs that became renowned throughout the East and were even shown in a special exhibit at Lord and Taylor in NYC. In 25 we produced another original production: The Sculptors of Lanesville, celebrating renowned sculptors Walker Hancock and Paul Manship, among others, who lived and worked here in Lanesville. Both of these were shown recently in 212 at the Cape Ann Museum to an overflow audience. This past season we produced The Quarry Dance, created by our long-time guest dance company from New York, The Dusan Tynek DanceTheatre. Funded by a grant from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, the dance was performed twice at the Babson Quarry at nearby Halibut Point State Park. The work was designed to call attention to the quarries, these hidden treasures of Cape Ann and to preserve them. The performance of dance in a special natural setting was so successful that HPHC is committed to funding Quarry Dance 2 for our 213 season. Finally, Windhover itself, a former farm, with its five acres of open fields, woods and gardens, outdoor stage, studios, cabins and main barn, is unique on Cape Ann. This special place and a continuous dedication to the arts for 45 years are its legacy. 4

5 Board Chair Statement SUCCESSES A New Dance for America: The Choreography, Teachings, and Legacy of Doris Humphrey. The film was chosen to open the Dance on Camera Film Festival, sold hundreds of DVDs and was viewed by thousands who have seen the film streamed on line through Alexander Press. In June 212 Windhover s performances of Made in Folly Cove, and The Artists of Lanesville at the Cape Ann Museum inspired such responses as the following letter: Hello, Dear Ina and Gang! It was so good to get your info about July and visualize another evening of dance and beauty in that fabulous setting! I came to the Cape Ann Museum for the absolutely brilliant performance about the Folly Cove designers and those months and years when that place came to life and flowered. I was deeply touched. The narration, the variety of dances, the inclusion of the products and the historical perspective of what a community could be generated by people who loved their crafts and who loved each other, was truly unique. Humphrey or Ailey couldn t have done it better. What would it take to do another performance? I would hate for that grand performance to be lost forever. Cheers and love, Laurie Hawkins Our week-long intensive summer dance workshops have been highly successful. This year, 215, marks our 15th year of offering the Dance Workshop titled: WIndhover Spreads its Wings. Windhover s collaboration with the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre: the three years of successful Quarry Dances leads us to believe we will have no difficulty in securing funding for summer 215 s creation of Quarry Dance 4. CHALLENGES We need to expand our programming and outreach. We have the capacity: a beautiful and unique mini-new England village with architectural treasures,three large studios, an outdoor stage, large dining room, kitchen and accommodations for 3 overnight guests. We should be able to thrive. With funding to hire the right person, we would take on the publicity and outreach that could sustain us. PERSONAL STATEMENT from a Board Member: I was introduced to Windhover in the late 197s when it was a summer arts camp for girls. At the request of a friend, I attended a performance of Trojan Women. The enthusiasm and professionalism of the young women was totally unexpected. In the years that followed I made it a point to visit every summer and was rewarded with performances of the Windhover Dance Company in both original works and those by modern dance pioneers. When Windhover became a non-profit corporation in 198, I volunteered to assist in any way I could. I was not familiar with concert dance. I was a sports film photographer; my company, WWFilms, made films for NBC and received a Peabody Award for the production of The Baseball World of Joe Garagiola. When Martha Graham requested that I film her works because she wanted someone who knew where the action was I fulfilled her request to her satisfaction. Windhover then promised me that I could film all their performances. For the next 25 years I fulfilled their promise and made many films of Windhover, some of which were used to promote and obtain funding, so necessary, as I found out, for a non-profit foundation. From a sports background, I became inextricably bonded to Windhover s mission to foster the arts and it was a natural next step for me to accept the role of president of the Board of Directors. 7 Programs "Windhover Spreads Its Wings" Intensive Summer Dance Program Description Now in its 15th year, the mission of the Windhover Spreads Its Wings Workshop is to provide a supportive, nurturing,fun, and creative environment in which to study dance for students ages 12 and up. Taught by members of a NYC based professional dance company, the students (maximum 3) have technique classes along with choreography and repertory, culminating in an informal performance at the conclusion of the workshop. A typical Workshop day begins with a gyrotonic warm-up, followed by two technique classes in Ballet and in Modern Dance (Humphrey-Limon technique). Morning concludes with a lunch break. Each afternoon, students have classes in Modern Dance Repertory and Dance Composition, including Laban Movement Analysis. Repertory features original works by our faculty. Members of the New York City based Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre have, since 27, served as special guest faculty. In the evening, students are given the options of classes such as Music for Dancers, Yoga, and Stretch; popular dance movies and documentaries are shown in the Main Barn and discussed. The workshop closes with an informal performance of the students' work. Young dancers present their own work and perform repertory for their family, friends, and local community members, thus gaining more confidence and proficiency in performing. Windhover's young student dancers return to their schools and studios with a developing artistry, one based on the discipline of dance, the creativity of improvisation, and an understanding of the place of dance in contemporary society. Workshop students return every year until they age out of the program. They and their parents write Windhover glowing letters about their experience of the workshop. Workshop students have gone on to dance in college and in dance and theater companies. One student, for example, graduated from Bennington; another, Goucher; and a third, Drew. Former students perform with dance and theater companies. 7

8 Windhover Annual Summer Dance Concerts Description Windhover performances have featured both local dance companies and special guests. Recent performances have included the Forty Steps Dance of Nahant, Sarah Slifer from Gloucester, and the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre of New York City. Windhover uses its beautiful outdoor stage for a weekend performances, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The performances are generally held in late July or early August. Shows start at 8: and can sometimes take advantage of the natural lighting of the full moon as backdrop. No reservations are required. In case of rain, performances are held indoors with limited seating available on a first-come, firstserved basis. Ticket prices are kept low so that community members who wish to do so can attend: $2 general admission; $15 seniors, children, North Shore Dance Alliance and Boston Dance Alliance. As Windhover draws from the history, stories, controversies, and places of its community in creating work, audience members can better understand their own sense of place (whether in the Cape Ann community or elsewhere) and respond from a depth of what they better perceive to be true. The value of performing classical works of dance and theater cannot be overestimated; all of us cherish the inspiration and joy they bring. Windhover audience members write letters and even poems in response to Windhover performances, for example, "Saturday was an unforgettable evening at Windhover... I want to congratulate you and thank you for the many things you have done for dance and continue to do so." Performances are reviewed, and newspapers write such accolades as, "Quarry Dance at Halibut Point State Park was a thrilling reminder of how dance narrative can have its own truth, not just its own language. Windhover was included in Cape Ann Currents, "212: A Great Year for the Arts -- A look back at milestone performances and cultural events on Cape Ann... for decades Windhover has enhanced the repertory of modern dance... 9 Windhover Dance Company Description Ina Hahn started the Windhover Dance Company in The Company is dedicated to the creation of dance and dance/drama with an emphasis on community, and has taken the lead in the reconstruction and performance of the dances of pioneer choreographer, Doris Humphrey. As such, it is the only company in New England whose mission is to pass on the legacy of this great artist. Ina, who studied with Humphrey, performed in her company and is a reconstructor certified by the Dance Notation Bureau, directs the reconstructions. The Company s repertory includes, "Made In Folly Cove, a Windhover original dance/theater piece, based on the lives of the Folly Cove Designers and "Artists Of Lanesville, based on the lives of Cape Ann artists. Reconstruction of Doris Humphrey's work includes, "Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor", "Water Study", "Two Ecstatic Themes", and "Variations and Conclusion from New Dance." We want to continue to revive these dances and perform a selection of them regularly. The Windhover Dance Company has kept alive both the spirit and the repertory of the great artist/choreographer, Doris Humphrey. Humphrey's works are demanding, technically and artistically: under the direction of Ina Hahn (and later, Carol Burnham), Windhover dancers develop their abilities to realize these works. The Windhover Dance Company uses the principles of composition and improvisation of Humphrey's, taught by Ina and therefore become artists and teachers who enhance the greater community. Directors Ina Hahn and Carol Burnham have the experience and education to see what works and what needs to be addressed in the running of the Windhover Dance Company. Audience response and newspaper reviews also track the quality of the dance performances. 9

10 Examples of Program Success In May of 212, the Windhover Dance Company collaborated with the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester to bring their original work, "Made in Folly Cove," to the general public. "Made in Folly Cove" was originally premiered in 21 at Windhover and has been performed at various venues on Cape Ann. "Made in Folly Cove" is an original dance/drama based on the lives and work of the Folly Cove Designers who formed a collective that flourished for 3 years and produced beautifully designed textiles. This work is a success wherever it is performed. Quarry Dances Description For the past three summers, Windhover has sponsored a site specific Quarry Dance at one of a number of fresh water quarries located in the Cape Ann region. The performances are free to the public and take place outdoors. The work is a new commission each year, created by choreographer Dusan Tynek and performed by members of his NYC based professional dance company. Members of the community have been called upon to help with the project by providing rope climbing skills, zip line skills, original music, and other activities. The cultural experience changed people and their concern for the natural environment. Bringing audiences of all kinds into nature to witness a creative performance that links the beauty of the environment to the experience, will hopefully bring awareness that nature is precious and must be protected, preserved and celebrated. The performances were free but people willingly donated money after the event concluded. Many audience members write stirring notes saying how successful these quarry dances had become and how they created a platform in which people could show care and concern for these precious resources. Many letters were received by people from all over that witnessed these events and were transformed by them. 12 Management CEO/Executive Director Executive Director Ms. Ina Hahn Term Start Jan Experience Ina Hahn is Windhover's Founder, Choreographer, and Principal Director. As a professional dancer, Ina was a member of Charles Weidman's dance company as well as performing the works of Doris Humphrey under her direction. under the direction. She danced on Broadway in several musicals, including "The King and I" and "Can-Can", where she understudied principal dancer, Gwen Verdon. Ina has taught at Radcliffe College, Harvard University, The Boston Conservatory, Smith College, Hampshire College, Bradford College, and Endicott College. She has run Windhover for over 45 years, first as a music, theater and dance performance summer camp which began in 1968, and later as a professional training school for the arts. Additionally, Ina received her certification as a Dance Reconstructor from the Dance Notation Bureau and has reconstructed many modern dance classics for colleges and companies throughout New England. Ina was a recipient of the Walker Hancock Award in 2 for her contributions to the local arts community. Ina has choreographed many of Windhover s original works, reconstructed many dances of Doris Humphrey, produced the documentary, A New Dance for America: The Choreography, Teachings and Legacy of Doris Humphrey, and is currently working on a new documentary, The Poor Man s Paradise, based on her collaboration with the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre on the Quarry Dances. Co-CEO Co-CEO Ms. Lisa Hahn Term Start May 212 Lhahn@art-horizons.com Experience Lisa Hahn has grown up at Windhover, having started as a camper at Windover from the age of actively engaged in studying modern dance, theater and music. She went on to help her mother run the programs at Windhover when her father died in In 1985, she started her own company, Art Horizons Int'l which organizes and conducts art tours around the world for museum patron groups. Her expertise in art allows her to lecture on the arts communities in cities all over Europe and the U.S. Lisa leads about 18-2 tours a year, escorting high level museum professionals as well as high end donors of museums into private art collections, artists' studios and behind-the-scenes in museums and galleries. With her professional business experience in the arts for the past 3 years, she is capable of leading Windhover into the future. 13 Experience/Biography Sallee Slagle danced with The Windhover Dance company for many years and has brought her own modern dance company, Forty Steps, to perform in Windhover's Summer Dance Series. She has successfully directed Windhover's Summer Dance Workshop for the past few years. Sallee is a graduate of The Boston Conservatory, and the Artistic Director of Forty Steps Dance. Sallee also has her own dance and fitness studio in Nahant, Dance Dimensions. She continues to teach Ballet and Modern Dance at several North Shore dance studios as well as her own. 17 Impact Goals Our goals are to increase public awareness of the beauty of the natural world and the art of dance.. We have already made great strides in this effort. In the past three years we have celebrated the quarries of Cape Ann by presenting dances that take place around and in the quarries.the performances are free, open to the public and have been so successful that we plan more. They are uplifting and celebratory events in these natural settings. We also present dance companies from the North Shore as well as New York City and are the only venue for dance in this area. As a result, our revenues from contributions have increased significantly these past several years, and the number of people volunteering their time and expertise has increased significantly. Finally, we plan to create an indoor theater for dance and have received a matching grant of $3, from the MCC as a first step towards this endeavor. Strategies We plan to address community issues as well as larger global environmental issues through performing works that take place in the natural world. As well, we will continue to foster local talent. Because of the success of our teenage dance workshops, we will increase them in the next few years and present more informal presentations of the students' works. We will continue to collaborate with other Cape Ann institutions and artists, as we did in 212 with three presentations at the Cape Ann Museum: performances of our dance/drama, Made In Folly Cove ; a panel discussion and a showing of A New Dance for America", our film on the legacy of modern dance pioneer Doris Humphrey. We plan to host a series of diners en couleur where guests pay to come and join in a fun evening of food, wine and entertainment. These were successful in 214, raising over $14,, and we will build on that success. Strategies include the building of a new theater to bring in more audiences and to allow for more performances in all of the performing arts in this bucolic setting. One goal is to combine dance and theater in nature to allow audiences to appreciate the natural world and its resources. Our goal is also to explore and introduce interdisciplinary works, combining musicians, dancers, writers and theater people in future productions. This goal helps to bring a more diverse audience to Windhover to appreciate the arts. Capabilities Capabilities: We have a long history of community involvement and support. We have addressed community issues for over forty years. Some examples are: The Battle for Pigeon Cove Harbor, an original musical we created, wrote and staged at Windhover in the 9 s, and which was effective in saving the local harbor for the fisherman. Made in Folly Cove," an original dance/theater work about the women who created a textile business and whose products became nationally recognized was an enormous success with locals whose heritage encompasses this Folly Cove designer group. And we have gained national recognition as presenters of modern dance. through our presentations of famous modern dance companies such as the Limon Dance Company as well as new choreographers and companies like Dusan Tynek Dance Theatre of NYC. We hosted a symposium on modern dance in 26 where experts from across the country came to participate and we created a dvd: New Dance for America in 21, which has sold thousands of copies to schools and universities. We continue to teach younger students of dance about their heritage through our dance workshops, and we plan to present many more dance companies in the future when we reach our goal of building an indoor theater for dance. (Currently we present dance on our outdoor stage which, while magical, is subject to the whims of the weather) 17

18 Indicators We have made enormous strides forward in recent years in a number of ways. One way was to increase the diversity and number of audience members that attend our performances. We launched a series of hosted dinners in many local's homes and invited all members of the dance companies to mix and mingle with the community. As a result, our individual donations increased, and 214 was the highest in more than a decade. Publicity of all sorts increased. The Quarry Dance was on the front page of the local Gloucester Times newspaper. The local cable television conducted an interview about Windhover and its origins and goals which was viewed by the community. The same cable TV made a video with drones of one of our outdoor performances, adding luster to the footage with these aerial shots. This has run a number of times on the local cable station. The Boston Globe chose our performances as a "Best Picks" two years in a row. Our efforts will only increase in these ways and a wider audience will be reached. Progress Our long term goal is to build a new indoor theater, complete with air conditioning. This will expand our offerings and ensure performances rain or shine.at present, performances are held on our outdoor stage and are subject to good weather. Building a new theater will also increase our audience capabilities,by attracting people from further away that will be assured of a comfortable indoor environment. With such a theater, we plan to invite dance companies from New York and Boston more regularly to perform from spring, through summer and into early fall, thus increasing our season. Our hope and goal is to collaborate with Rockport Music and offer master classes, lecture demonstrations and collaborations between musicians and dancers. Renowned choreographers including the Limon Company, Beth Soll and dancers, and Paul Taylor company whose new mission is to preserve the heritage of modern dance, are all guest companies we want to invite to perform at Windhover in the future. So far, we have started a fundraising effort and are continuing to raise money towards our matching MCC grant. Our goals are slowly but surely being realized. 18
