2 Greetings Mavericks! The long awaited Homecoming 2016 is about to unfold in front of your very eyes on 3 rd October. I am excited to let you know that this year s theme is Going for gold, that resembles the beauty and sheer magnificence of the international Olympic tournament. Such elegance can only be witnessed in Minnesota State University, Mankato, filled with fun events and entertainment. All information regarding the Homecoming 2016 can be found in this packet or at Eager people who are willing to participate in the week s events: dodgeball tournament, Homecoming court, soccer tournament, Mav s Got Talent, and parade registration can fill out forms online. In an effort to converse paper, all sub-missions will be online. This year, our Homecoming king and queen will be crowned on Thursday to allow our Homecoming court to be highlighted throughout the week, simultaneously featuring all the competitive tournaments and showcasing talents. Donation of non-perishable food is encouraged throughout the week at the Cram a Van drop off site on the university mall. From an intense dodgeball game to sweat-stained soccer matches, as well as the new Mav s Got Talen Competition and Lipsync: this year is an absolute delight for any individual. So why not just add yourself to the joyous Homecoming culture and long standing tradition of Minnesota State University, Mankato? Just a simple visit to the vicinity would do the trick. This year there will be a competition featuring three divisions: Gold, Purple and Maverick. Remember that group compete for first, second and third in their own division. All teams compete for the All-Spirit Awards. 4 2016 Competition Divisions Going for the Gold Beyond the campus-wide celebration, Minnesota State University, Mankato s Homecoming Week involves a series of contests to foster school spirit. All Minnesota State University, Mankato students are encouraged to participate in the events. The three divisions that students may participate in are: * Please note the different divisions are based on the number of students from your organization/group that will participate in the Homecoming competition. A roster must be submitted with packet. GOLD DIVISION The Gold Division will consist of groups that have 10 to 25 students. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in this category: 1st Place: $250 & traveling trophy 2nd Place: $175 3rd Place: $100 PURPLE DIVISION The Purple Division will consist of groups that have 26 to 45 students. Prizes* will be awarded to the top three winners in this category: 1st Place: $250 & traveling trophy 2nd Place: $175 3rd Place: $100 MAVERICK DIVISION The Maverick Division will consist of groups that have 46 to 120 students. No more than 120 in a group. Prizes* will be awarded to the top three winners in this category: 1st Place: $250 & traveling trophy 2nd Place: $175 3rd Place: $100 * Your group must have a 901 account (on-campus account). Prize money will be transferred to your 901 account and can only be used for travel, programming on campus, or convention fees. For more details contact Student Event Team Advisor, Bill Tourville, by at William.Tourville@mnsu.edu ALL-SPIRIT AWARDS Two All-Spirit Awards will be awarded: one to the team with the highest overall point total and one to the team voted by the Homecoming Committee to have the most spirit throughout the week. Each team will receive a traveling trophy, as well as an additional $125. All applications and contacts involving Homecoming activities must be turned in by Monday, September 15, 2016 at 4 p.m. to the Student Activities Office, CSU 173, online or ed to farhan.chowhurdy@mnsu.edu *Applications turned in after 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 15will not be accepted.

5 Overall Point System for the 2016 Homecoming Competition Homecoming Royalty- 400 Points Possible Royal Candidate Sponsorship All Royalty applicants will need to submit an application. A group of judges will narrow down the applicants to a minimum of four kings and queens. The remaining two candidates will be selected based on their application and interview, allowing for a maximum of six queens or six kings and 10 candidates total. Team Points Teams will receive 50 points for each candidate Teams will receive 75 for each candidate that is chosen for the Homecoming court (max 2 candidates). o Each team may enter two (2) candidates, one (1) king and one (1) queen candidate, two (2) queen candidates, or two (2) king candidates A team will receive 75 points (additional) if one or both are crowned as king and queen. Homecoming Royalty Selection Homecoming candidates will be chosen based on the following (each a 10 point scale): Demonstrated leadership on campus Demonstrated involvement in campus activities Academic excellence Ability to represent Minnesota State University, Mankato with a positive image Homecoming King/Queen will be chosen based on the following 10% Attendance at Kick-Off 10% Performance at University Trivia Contest (5 Questions) 5% Attending Trivia Contest 40% Candidate Interview 35% Percentage of Royalty Voting Homecoming Royalty Requirements Candidates must have completed a minimum of 30 credits at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Candidates must have at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA and be in good standing with the University. Candidates must be currently enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours at Minnesota State University, Mankato. All candidates must fully complete the Royalty Application and turn it in by Thursday, September 15, To verify the candidate s GPA with the Registrar s office, all candidates must sign the grade release form attached to the Homecoming packet and turn it in with the royalty application.

6 All Royalty Court members must attend an informational meeting on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 8 p.m. If a candidate cannot attend this meeting, the Homecoming Chair or the Student Events Team advisor must excuse him or her in advance. This meeting will cover the duties of the Homecoming Royalty along with taking the candidates photos. All Royalty Court candidates must attend Trivia Contest on Tuesday, October 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the CSU Mall. The King and Queen must be able to attend the Homecoming Parade and Football game. Rules for Royalty Campaigns Materials may be hung from September 30 to October 6 at 11:59 p.m. All printed materials must be taken down by Thursday, October 6, 2016 at noon. Failure to meet this requirement may result in disqualification. No chalking of the buildings is allowed. To sidewalk chalk you must confirm with the scheduling office located in 220 Centennial Student Union. Defacing, covering, or taking down other candidates posters/flyers will result in disqualification. Posters/flyers hung in academic buildings or residence halls must follow guidelines set by Building Services. Please read the Residence Hall posting policy (Page 28) before hanging flyers in the halls. Candidates will be disqualified for hanging materials in improper spaces. The exchange of a vote toward any specific candidate for any good, material, or service is prohibited. Bribery will not be tolerated. The Student Events Team and Homecoming Committee will not be held responsible for any of the rules (as stated by Building Services, Residence Halls, and the CSU) that are violated by any team participating in Homecoming. Any costs related to damages are the sole responsibility of the sponsoring team. Rules for hanging materials in the CSU Posters may be hung in the restrooms. Building signs must remain completely untouched. Artwork and gallery spaces are not to be used. Campaign materials must not interfere with building traffic. Only Blue Painters Tape can be used to hang materials. No signs may be placed on doors Trivia Contest: This contest is included to find out which participant truly bleeds Mavericks. A set of 5 questions will be asked to the candidates on the day of spirit lunch. This is a public event.

Candidates will be given 1 minute speech time to tell people why they should vote for them after the trivia contest. 5. Candidates will be disqualifies for inappropriate answers Dodgeball tournament-125 Points Possible Each team will receive 50 points for entering a team of six people only one dodgeball team will be allowed to participate per competition team excluding residence communities who may have more than one team. Points will be given to the top two finishers in each division. First Place 50 points Second place 25 points. Soccer Tournament-125 Points Possible Each team will receive 50 points for entering a team of six people only one soccer team will be allowed to participate per competition team excluding residence communities who may have more than one team. Points will be given to the top two finishers in each division. There will be eight teams allowed in competition. First come, first serve. First place- 50 Points Second place 25 points Rules: 1. Each team will have 6 people including goal keeper. 2. It will be decided on October 1 who is going for finals 3. Rolling substitution is allowed and there will be no offside 4. Single elimination tournament with random seeding 5. Each game will last 20 minutes with stoppage time. 20 Minute halves with a 5 minute break 10 minutes in-between games

8 Food Eating Contest -90 Points Possible Each team that enters will receive 25 points for each participant (max two participants). Points will be awarded to the top three finishers: First Place- 25 points Second place 15 points Third Place 10 points Rules: There will be four rounds consisting of three heats, one for each division. Two winners from each division will compete in final round. Contestants must remain seated at all times. They cannot use their hands or any other tools. Each plate must be completely eaten. One judge will determine the winner of each round. Two judges will monitor for interactions. Judges decisions are final. Cram A van :275 Points Possible This is Homecoming s opportunity to give back to the Mankato community. Each team will receive points for the weight of their non-perishable food items donated one lbs. is equal to one point, not to exceed 200 points. There will be extra points awarded for the three teams with the most points. Food Point System First place 75 points Second place 50 points Third place 25 points Lip Sync Contest 200 points possible Each team will earn 100 points for participating in this event. Additional points will be given to the top three teams: First Place 100 points Second Place 75 points Third Place 50 points The contest will be judged on: Overall performance 15% Originality 15% Choreography 10% Teamwork 10% Someone lip syncing at all times 15% Correlation to the Homecoming theme 20% (includes costume and props) Knowledge of song lyrics 15%

9 Rules: All routines must be performed on the space provided in Bresnan Arena. Each team must use the first unedited 25 seconds of the Olympic Theme Song, Olympic Fanfare and Theme. The rest of the music will be chosen by each team at the informational meeting. Teams will come with a list of 10 additional songs, and in an organized manner, teams will get to choose their songs. You can only use the music that your team has selected. The teams will end up with five (5) songs, every song must be used during the performance. By Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 5 p.m., you must come in to the Student Activities Office, CSU 173, and show your music for approval. Each routine must be between four (4) minutes and eight (8) minutes long. No glitter No obscene actions are permitted. No alcohol, drug, or sexual connotations are allowed. At all times, someone from your team must be lip syncing to the music or points will be deducted. All items must be removed from the performance area following the performance. Items left on the stage will result in a point reduction. Must sign a waiver in order to participate If you do not follow the above rules, your team will be disqualified. Mav s Got talent: 200 Points Possible This competition is for the people/groups who want to showcase their talents and Maverick pride. This competition participants will be selected after they submit a video of their talents on Orgsync. A group of judges will decide whether they are eligible for main stage show or not. For the main stage show, 8 acts will be selected. Each competition team will receive 50 points or each member(s) of their team is selected to perform (Max 100 points) First place 100 points Second place 75 points Third place 50 points PARADE ENTRY -300 POINTS POSSIBLE The parade is Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Noon. Lineup starts at 10 a.m. Look for signs and future information about the parade. Teams that enter a float or parade unit will earn 100 points for participation. Earning Points As stated above, each team will earn 100 points for entering a float, car, or marching/walking unit. Teams can earn additional points based the following: Correlation to Homecoming Theme 30 points Originality and Creativity 20 points Quality of Work 50 points Additional points will be given to the top three teams:

10 First place entry 100 points Second place entry 75 points Third place entry 50 points Teams will lose 100 points for turning in a parade application and failing to enter a float or parade unit on the day of the Homecoming parade. If the team does not get their registration in by September 30, the team cannot participate in the parade. No late entries are accepted. COMPETITION ANNOUNCEMENT Competition and All-Spirit Award winners will be announced following the outcome of Mav s Got Talent in the Ballroom at approximately 10pm. Teams are asked to attend, as they need at least two (2) members to be present to accept their award. TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS: 1,715 Additional Notes: 1. Any infractions of the rules or regulations outlined in this packet will result in the loss of points or disqualification from the Homecoming competition. In the event of an infraction, the Student Events Team and Homecoming Committee reserve the right to determine the point loss or disqualification. 2. Student Activities reserves the right to address any improper behavior including, but not limited to, deducting points. 3. In the event of a tie, the Student Events Team shall decide the winner based on contribution to Homecoming in the areas of enthusiasm, effort, and participation. The Student Events Team s decision will be final. 4. There will be a mandatory team meeting Thursday, September 22 at 5:00 p.m. in CSU 173 (Student Activities Office). 5. Please refer to the official Homecoming website at for more information regarding rules and event details. All Homecoming events are held in wheelchair accessible facilities.
