3 As all of you may have remembered in the past, Greek Week was the one week out of the year for everyone involved in the Greek community to show their pride for their individual chapters. This year we have decided to put a new spin on things. Not only do we want you to show the university your pride for your chapter but we also want there to be another opportunity. This year we have decided to make teams consisting of members from PHC, IFC, and NPHC chapters. By signing up individuals from your chapter, you are signing up not only to participate for your chapter but to be a part of a group that includes other chapters. After we receive these packets, we will have a general idea of how many people will be participating. From that we will then make up five teams. Whatever team your chapter is chosen to be on, will be your team for the whole week. By doing this we hope that there will be opportunity for growth in the Greek community. We are hoping this will be a fun opportunity to work and meet people you may have never met before. Greek week isn t just about showing off your spirit for your chapter, but it s about showing spirit for the entire Greek community. 3

4 Dear Chapter Presidents, The dates for Greek Week are set for October 11 th 17 th, This packet includes all information regarding activities, guidelines, location of events, registration forms, and times. All registration packets and shirt orders are due to the HUB desk by 12:00 PM, Monday, October 10 th, The registration form and T Shirt order form must be placed in a sealed manila envelope, marked with the title Greek Week and your Chapter s name. If your paperwork is not turned in on time it will NOT be accepted. If you have any concerns feel free to contact Cameron Klempay or Danielle Bandza with the contact information at the bottom of the page. 5 General Rules 1.) A set amount of points will be awarded to each team for every place that they achieve. 2.) All participants for every event need to be an active member or new member for their chapter and must have a signed waiver. All participants must have their student ID with them at all times. 3.) The Greek Week Committee and the Office of Greek Life Programs Staff reserve the right to disqualify any individual, group, chapter, or group of chapters at any time prior to, during, or after Greek Week for unsportsmanlike conduct, or behavior unbecoming of a member of our Greek Community. 4.) Only one (1) representative from each team may approach the Greek Week Committee members concerning a ruling decision. More than one (1) person approaching the Greek Week Committee will be considered as grounds for complete Disqualification from that event, and an automatic 5 points deduction will be taken from their overall score. 5.) There is to be NO alcohol, or representation of alcohol permitted at any event, at any time. Please refer to the Greek Week Alcohol Policy for more information. 6.) If any member or members of a team are cheating or violating the rules pertaining to each individual event, the entire team will be disqualified from that event. 7.) Points will be awarded as outlined in this packet. The team that has accumulated the highest amount of points shall be declared the Greek Week Champions. There will be a scoreboard located in the Student Union at all times with updated points for each chapter to see. 8.) Greek Week Co Chairs hold all right to amend this packet as they see fit at any particular time. 9.) Remember that as a community we are united, let s have fun and show the rest of the university what a great group of peers we are. 5

6 Greek Week Code of Conduct As participating members of Greek Week 2010, we will uphold and promote the ideas for which Greek Week stands. We will conduct ourselves with dignity and be well mannered at all times, keeping in mind that our actions directly reflect upon Greek Week and the Greek Community as a whole. The Greek Week Committee will hold teams responsible for adherence to the following basic expectations: 1.) Teams will refrain from using language that is disrespectful or otherwise in bad taste 2.) Team performances will demonstrate good taste in dress and movement 3.) Teams will respect their own property and the property of others, and will not condone nor tolerate the abuse of property 4.) Teams will exhibit good sportsmanship at all times 5.) Each participating member will keep in mind that the overall objective of Greek Week is to bring the Greek Community together ALCOHOL POLICY In accordance with the federal, state, and local laws and policies set by the University of Akron, the IFC, PHC, and NPHC Judicial Boards, and FIPG guidelines: ALL Greek Week events will be ALCOHOL FREE (dry). Any violation of this will be handled as follows: 1.) Any individual found to be in possession of alcohol and is approached by a member of the Greek Week Committee, Office of Greek Life Programming, or University of Akron Police Department (UAPD) will be asked to dump out any opened alcohol containers, and that person will be documented and held accountable 2.) If the individual refuses to dump out and/or forfeit their alcohol, they will be escorted from the event by UAPD 3.) Anyone escorted from an event will not be allowed to participate in any further Greek Week competitions and their chapter may face a complete disqualification from Greek Week This policy begins midnight October 10 th, 2010 and will extend through midnight October 17 th, Greek Week will no tolerate or condone the use of illegal drugs or alcohol at any event. If there are any questions or confusion about what this entails please feel free to contact one of the Greek Week Chairs for further explanation. Each participating chapter will be held responsible and accountable for upholding the Greek Week Code of Conduct, the rules set forth by Department of Student Life, UAPD, IFC, PHC, NPHC as well as all guidelines that the University of Akron has us comply with. 6

In consideration for the opportunity to participate in the activities described above, in association with Greek Week at The University of Akron, (sponsored by the office of Greek Life Programs, The Panhellenic Council, The Interfraternity Council, National Pan Hellenic Council, and other outside sponsors) and taking place on property owned by The University of Akron, I, for myself, my executors, administrators, and assigns, do hereby release and forever discharge The University of Akron, its Board of Trustees, officers, employees, students and agents, from and against any and all costs, liabilities, expenses or judgments, (including but not limited to attorney's fees), (collectively "claims"), arising out of my participation in the Greek Week or any loss, damage, illness or injury resulting there from. I hereby further agree to indemnify and hold harmless The University of Akron, The Panhellenic Council, The Interfraternity Council, National Pan Hellenic Council, and other outside sponsors from and against any and all such claims. I represent to the University and all other sponsors that I am physically capable of participating in the events of Greek Week, and that to the extent necessary in light of my prior health history and general physical condition, I have consulted my personal physician or other health authority before making such representation. If I have had any questions about the activities' content, nature, risks or hazards, I have contacted the activities' coordinator and have discussed those questions with him or her to my satisfaction. I hereby attest and verify that I have full knowledge that my participation may require exposure to physical activities involving risks that might result in injury. I represent and certify that my true age is at least 18 years old. I have read this entire Release, I fully understand it, and I agree to be legally bound by it. 12 Banner Competition Due: Friday October 8th by 12:00 PM to the HUB Desk Event Explanation: Each chapter will prepare and present a banner that portrays their Greek/team spirit. Event Specifics: Each chapter will be given a piece of cloth that will be used for their banner. These banners will be displayed in the Student Union throughout the week to show your chapter/team s pride and hard work. The Banner must include each chapter s letters and must incorporate the Greek Week Theme. Event Rules: 1.) Banners must display Greek spirit, but need to reflect on every chapter that makes up each team 2.) NO nudity, obscenity, portrayal of violence, alcohol, or drug references. *Any violation of the above statements will result in a disqualification from the event. Event Scoring: This is an individual event, the team with the best overall banner will be declared the winner and earn 100 points. Banners will be scored on a system broken down into the following categories: + Participation + Chapter spirited + Artistic Quality + Creativity +Use of Theme All judges will be pre selected by the Greek Week Committee 12

13 Rock Painting Competition Time: Signups will be held during the first Greek Week Committee meeting Location: Spirit Rock in front of Student Union Dates: October 11 th and 12 th with rain out days on October 13 th and 14t h The envelopes must be turned into the hub desk by Friday October 15 th, 2010 by 12:00 PM. No late arrivals will be accepted Event Specifics: Each team will be assigned a time to paint the rock. Each team is responsible for getting a camera to take a picture of the rock. Each team is required to turn in a picture of the rock painted into the HUB desk. The picture will only be accepted in an envelope that is addressed: Attention: Greek Week Rock Painting (your team s name) Event rules: 1. Teams must paint the rock during their given time only. Painting the rock before or after the designated time will result in a disqualification of the Team for this specific event. 2. Teams must turn in a picture for the final project to be scored; otherwise no points will be awarded for participation. 3. Teams must use appropriate behavior while painting the rock. Also, the rock must be painted in good taste, as it is in the middle of campus and it will not only reflect your team but the entire Greek Community. The design must also incorporate the Greek Week theme. Event scoring: This is + Participation + Chapter spirited + Artistic Quality + Creativity a tea m event, where one team will be chosen as a winner. All judges will be pre selected by the Greek Week Committee. 13

14 Collegiate Issues Event Time and Date: Monday October 11 th, 2010 Time: 8:00pm to 9:00pm Event Location: Student Union Ballrooms A & B Event Specifics: Calling All Greeks to the Floor with Tish Norman. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tish brings a powerful and influential new voice to the fraternity and sorority educational market. She motivates Greeks of all types using her creative energy and stylish humor to enhance the quality of student life on and off campus. Tish promotes diversity and unity by calling on Greek letter organizations to recognize and embrace their differences. She also challenges fraternity and sorority leaders to become role models for the men and women who follow behind them. A bottom line point value of 25 points will be given out to every team if at least one person from every chapter in that team is present for this event. Then points will be given out to Greek Week Teams based on the percentage of people that show up to the event for that team. Tish uses creative energy and stylish motivation to help students release their inner leader. She is known for her humor, her energy and for delivering programs that offer practical information and positive strategies. She also brings a special sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, making her the perfect choice for those campuses with significantly multicultural student bodies. Points 50% = 75 points 35% = 50 points 25% = 25 points 14

15 Penny Wars Penny Jugs due: Friday October 8 th, 2010 at 12:00 PM at the HUB Desk Event Starts: Monday October 11 th, 2010 at 9:00 AM Event Ends: Friday October 15 th, 2010 at 12:00 PM Event Specifics: Each team will be designated a jug to put pennies into. Each team will have a jug that sits out on a table in the Student Union. By people s donations in each team s jug we will count up the money. Each penny will be worth one point and silver change and bills will be worth negative its face value. This means that you can end up with a negative amount of points. Event Rules: 1.) Each team will be given a jug from the Greek Week Committee upon the return of the registration packet. 2.) The jugs are unified, meaning the jug is the same size for every chapter. You must use the jug provided for you. 3.) You are more than welcome to decorate your jug as your chapter sees fit. There are to be no decorations on the opening of the jug preventing coins to fit. The name must also be on the side of the jug. 4.) The bottom of the jug must be left plain with the exception of these specifics a. Team name written out not just one chapter name, or Greek letters b. It must be legible. 5.) No one is to touch, move, or vandalize another member s jug. Proof of this action results in automatic disqualification of your chapter from this event. Scoring: The team with the best score wins first place points etc * All money collected will be donated to Akron Humane Society 15

16 The Cookout Event Starts: Tuesday, October 12 th, 2010 at 6pm Event Ends: Tuesday, October 12 th, 2010 at 9pm Event Location: Phi Kappa Tau s volleyball court, Delta Gamma s parking lot, and the field between Delta Gamma, and Phi Delta Theta Event Specifics: This will be essentially three events happening at the same time. There will be a volleyball tournament held at Phi Tau, a corn hole tournament at Delta Gamma s parking lot, and a wiffle ball tournament in the field in front of Phi Delta Theta. While all of this is taking place there will be a DJ playing music, and food provided. Event Rules: 1.) Since there are three tournaments happening at the same time, if an individual participates in one tournament, they are unable to participate in the others. (For example, if you re playing wiffle ball y0u will not be able to play corn hole or volleyball.) 2.) The wiffle ball tournament will be single elimination. This game will run 7 innings, three outs an inning. A player will be declared out if their hit is caught in the air, thrown to the base, or tagged below the shoulders with the ball. Any hit that reaches the street will be declared a ground rule double. 3.) The corn hole tournament will be double elimination. We will use regulation corn hole rules. Any bean bag thrown into the hole will earn three points; any bean bag landing on the board will earn 1 point. Each game will play to 21. At any time in the game your team goes over 21 points you will automatically drop down to 15 points. 4.) The volleyball tournament will be a single elimination. Each match will consist of three games to ) All tournaments must contain male and female participants Event Scoring: The first place team for each event will earn their team 100 points. 16

17 Can Stadium Competition Event Starts: Wednesday, October 13 th, 2010 at 9:00 AM Event Ends: Wednesday, October 13 th, 2010 at 5:00 PM Event Location: The Student Union Ballrooms B, C, D and E Event Specifics: Each team will be asked to bring in canned food. These cans of food will be used to build a replica of Infocism Stadium. Eve nt Rules: 1.) Any materials are permitted to help in building your stadium, but only canned food will count for points. 2.) Only cans of perishable food are permitted. Canned soda will not count for points. 3.) Every individual can of food will count for one point. 4.) This will be a team event in which one team will be declared the winner. Creativity Artistic quality Number of cans used 17

18 Greek God and G oddess 2010 Start date and time: October 15 th, 2010 at 8:00 PM Check in time: 7:00 PM Event explanation: Each chapter will have to choose one member to compete in a multiple round pageant competi tion to decide who will be crowned Greek God and Greek Goddess for Event Location: Student Union Ballroom A+B with dressing rooms in the Ballrooms as well Event specifics: There will be four rounds: talent, interview, team mascot, and evening wear. Contestants should be prepared to perform a talent, have an appropriate mascot for the mascot wear portion along with evening wear for the question and answer portion of the pageant. All attire and performances must be approved by the committee the night of dress rehearsal. Dress Rehearsal: October 4 th, 2010 at 7:00 PM in front of the Student Union Ballrooms Event rules: 1. Each chapter will choose only one member to compete in the Greek God and Goddess competition. 2. Even though this is a fun and laid back event for Greek Life, we expect the contestants to remember to use their best judgment and remember they are representing not only their individual chapters, but the University of Akron s Greek Life Community. Along with using their best judgments; we expect them to have appropriate outfits when it comes to their attire for the talent and during the interview portion. If the committee deems anything inappropriate the night of the competition it could result in disqualification. 3. Mascot and event wear should be appropriate and has to be approved by the committee the night of dress rehearsal. 4. Each contestant should be prepared to answer impromptu questions which will be given by a member of the Greek Week Committee. Event Scoring: This is an individual event, both Fraternity and Sorority winners will be chosen. The points awarded will go toward the team s total points. Each winner will receive 25 points. Greek God and Goddess will be scored on the following: Participation Talent Team Mascot Wear Participants will pick a Mascot and design a costume for that character Evening Wear Interview 18

19 All Greek Stroll Off Event Time and Date: Thursday October 14 th, 2010 Time: 7:30PM Event Location: Student Union Ballrooms A, B, C, D, & E Event Specifics: Working closely with the NPHC, teams will create a routine and have a stroll off competition. Points and the specifics of the All Greek Stroll Off are outlined in greater detail below. Greek We ek Stroll Off Competition The University of Akron Student Union Ballroom Thursday, October 14 th, :30 p.m. Greek Week Stroll Off Rules & Regulations Qualifications 1. For each Greek Week Team there will be 2 stroll teams: a sorority stroll team (consisting of one NPHC sorority and PHC members) and a fraternity stroll team (consisting of one NPHC fraternity and IFC members). 2. Each Greek Week sorority and fraternity stroll team must have at least 5 members and is allowed a max of 16 members. 3. Each sorority and fraternity stroll team is to pick a team captain who will become the stroll team s main contact. This team captain must be a member of NPHC. Registration 4. Each Greek Week Team will be asked to submit the attached form as confirmation. This conformation form must be submitted by Wednesday, September 29 th, 2010 by Noon to the NPHC President s mailbox located in The Hub/GLO. 5. When these forms are submitted, each team captain will be contacted to make sure that they understand the format of the show and to answer any questions. Please know that at any time you have questions please feel free to contact Frank Brown (NPHC member) or Taonna Hunter (NPHC President). 6. Music for your stroll routine must be submitted by Monday, October 4 th, 2010 by Noon on a C.D. The C.D. must be clearly marked with the team s name and turned into the NPHC President s mailbox. (Music will not be accepted after this deadline). No exceptions!!!!! 19

20 7. Music must be without profanity and any inappropriate references/topics (this rule also goes for the stroll routine itself as well). If you have any questions on what s considered appropriate please contact Taonna Hunter via uanphc@hotmail.com. The music can also be master mixed, but that is the responsibility of the team. The music you submit will be the exact cut used for the stroll off. The Competition Rounds 8. Each Greek Week stroll off team will have 3 minutes to perform a stroll together. 9. You may pick any song you would like to stroll to. 10. You will be judged upon the following: Creativity. 25 Judges are looking for creativity. This can be displayed in many ways through props, a stroll concept/theme, dance moves, formation or where ever your team sees fit to display creativity. There is no need to build a set. Uniformity Judges will be looking for the stroll line to remain a consistency of alikeness in stroll movements. Apparel Judges are looking for the stroll line to be similar or carry some sort of theme in their apparel overall. This could be anything from costumes to crossing shirts to GLO shirts, etc Mandatory Rehearsal Attitude Judges are looking for the members of the stroll team to enjoy themselves and the experience of stroll ing with their stroll line along with staying in character of the stroll itself. Overall Appeal Judges will be looking for the overall appeal and spirit of strolling and the efforts of the stroll line. 11. It is up to the stroll team s responsibility to coordinate their own practices to prepare themselves along with provide themselves with what they need for their performances. 12. Saturday, October 9 th, 2010 will be the rehearsal date. This is so Greek Life can make sure that all the routines are appropriate. Failure to showcase your routine at this rehearsal will disqualify you from the event as a participant. 13. Rehearsal times are first come, first serve when selecting a time. 20

21 The Day Of 14. All members of each stroll team are expected to arrive at Student Union Ballroom no later than 6:30pm. 15. Failure to do so will disqualify your team from the competition. If any of your members cannot arrive on time due to a reasonable excuse (work, class, etc.), they must notify their stroll team captain who will notify Taonna (NPHC President) or Frank Brown (NPHC member) 5 days prior to this event. 16. All stroll teams must bring all materials needed for their performance (if you have any). 17. Each team will be provided a space to keep their belongings. 18. When you arrive, you are expected to sign in and get your wristband that will signify that you are a participant of this event. The Prize and How the Scores Are Tallied!!!!! 19. Each stroll line will be scored individually. But the points awarded to the sorority stroll line and the fraternity stroll line from the same Greek Week Team will be combined together to go toward the total points for their Greek Week team for this event. 20. The Greek Week Team with the highest collaborative Stroll Off points wins the Greek Week Stroll Off. IF ANY UPDATES OR CHANGES ARE MADE FOR THIS EVENT, THE TEAM CAPTAINS WILL BE CONTACTED AND INFORMED. 21

23 Make a Difference Day Turn in date and time: Saturday October 16 th, 2010 at various locations around Akron. There will be two shifts available for which chapters must sign up for one of those time slots. Shift 1 Shift 2 Check in: 7:45 8:30am Working: 9:00 Noon Check in: 10:45 11:30am Working: Noon 3:00pm Check in location: The Student Union Ballroom Event Specifics: Time for Greeks to go out and make a positive difference in this world we live in. This is a community service event where all members of the Greek Community are encouraged to go out and give back to the community. A bottom line point value of 25 points will be given out to every team if at least one person from every chapter in that team participates that day. Then for every person that checks in will receive one point to go toward their team. Chapters MUST register themselves to be able to participate in Make a Difference Day at 23

24 Sports Trivia Challenge Date and Time: Sunday October 17 th, 2010 at 11:00 AM Check in Time: 10:30 AM Location: Student Union Theater Event Specifics: 1. This event is single elimination 2. Each team will have a group of no more than five people, one person per chapter, who will participate in the trivia challenge. 3. Those teams with four chapters will be allowed a fifth person from the chapter of their choosing. 4. Each round will consist of either two or three groups competing at one time. A question pertaining to Sports trivia will be asked and your team will have fifteen seconds to write an answer on their answer board. 5. After the fifteen seconds each group will turn over their answer board and if correct they win one point. 6. The first group to fifteen points wins that round. Tie breakers will apply. 7. Points will be allocated based on the point system set up for Greek Week Reminder: All clothing should be tasteful as you are representing your chapter 24

25 Greek Olympics Event dat e and time : Sunday October 17 th, 2010 at 11:00 AM Check in: 10:30 AM Locations: Student Union Theater, the Recreation and Wellness Center, and the practice field next to Schrank (Student Union ballrooms as a rain location) Your chapter must arrive and be checked in by 10:45 AM otherwise you will be disqualified Events will consist of both physical and mental events Memb ers of your chapter will be competing in 6 events: 1. Sports Trivia Challenge 2. Knockout Each team will have a group of no more than three people who will participate in the game. 3. Chariot Race Each team will create their own chariot to race with. Teams can use anything they wish to create their chariot. Ex: build from the ground up or a simple office chair. Be creative! Each team will have a group of no more than five people, one person per chapter, who will participate in the race. Those teams with four chapters will be allowed a fifth person from the chapter of their choosing. Each member will complete one lap then pass the chariot onto the next member until all members have gone. 4. Relay Race Each team will have a group of no more than seven people. The chapters within each team must decide on their own how these seven slots will be filled. 5. Obstacle Course Each team will have a group of no more than five people, one person per chapter, who will participate in the race. Those teams with four chapters will be allowed a fifth person from the chapter of their choosing. 25

26 6. 8 person Tug O War Each team will have a group of no more than seven people. The chapters within each team must decide on their own how these seven slots will be filled. Any chapter that has 50% of their chapter in the Greek Week shirt will earn an additional 50 points to go toward their Greek Week Team total point value.
