Stanton Middle School News Principal, Anthony Horton Assistant Principal, Kathy Scott Dean of Students, Aaron Hido March FAX Spring Break: March Last Student Day: May 23 Dear Stanton Parents, Our Stanton staff and students have been working diligently this winter with high-quality lessons and relevant learning paired with academic intervention and enrichment in TIE. We have been preparing our 8 th grade students for their transition to Roosevelt High School next year. Our 8 th grade school counselor, Mr. Goshe, has been working closely with the Roosevelt guidance office to help students create schedules for next year. Also, our 8 th grade students recently participated in a tour of Roosevelt High School. Transition events will continue into August to assure the best possible transition from middle school to high school. You are invited to enjoy Stanton s musical Château La Roach on Friday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditeria. It includes 31 students as cast and crew members, who have been rehearsing daily after school for eight weeks. Don t miss this musical comedy! Spring sports (lacrosse and track) begin on March 5. Participating in a spring sport is a great way for our 7 th and 8 th grade students to challenge themselves, build friendships, and get physically fit. For more information, contact our Athletic Director, Mr. Marty Tinkler, at (330) or ke_mtinkler@kentschools.net Stanton s Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) STAR program continues to encourage and teach students Safety, Tolerance, Accountability, and Respect. Each Friday at lunch many students eagerly redeem the STAR bucks they have earned for their positive behavior at the STAR store. Thank you for supporting your children in their academic, athletic, and social growth! Continuing their development at home reinforces and builds upon all we do here at Stanton. Sincerely, Dean of Students

If school is cancelled due to inclement weather, you will be notified by our One Call Now automated parent broadcast phone system. Be sure to say Hello when you answer the phone or else the message will not play and the system will continue to call. Please make sure that we have your correct phone number in case we need to send you a message regarding school closings. As always, you may also check local TV and radio stations and websites. We are always concerned about the safety of our students. The decision to close school is made by the Superintendent in conjunction with advisors. School may be closed due to wind chill, driving conditions, deep snow, ice, or a combination of factors. As a parent, the ultimate decision about your child s safety is left up to you. If you feel the weather situation is not safe for your child, please keep him or her at home and call the office to let us know.

School Fees If your child did not receive a report card, it probably means that school fees are owed. Fee invoices were mailed. If you have questions about school fees, please call the account clerk, Mrs. D Sidocky, at (330) (If your child is on the Free or Reduced price meals program, you may be eligible for a full or partial waiver of school fees. We must have received signed permission to waive fees.) 4 Counselors Corner Miss Frey, Mr. Goshe, and Mrs. Cottrill Tidbit of the Month: Self-Harming Behaviors Middle schools all over the United States have reported outbreaks in self-harming behaviors among students. While the injuries are typically minor these behaviors tend to cause concern among parents. What is important to know? Self-harming refers to hurting oneself to feel an immediate release from emotional pain or distress. Self-harming behavior can be scratching, cutting, pinching, pulling out hair, burning, or bruising inflicted onto oneself. Majority of self-harming adolescents do not meet the criteria for a diagnosable psychological disorder, have never had suicidal thoughts or attempted to end their lives, and have never experienced sexual or physical abuse. Tattoos, body piercings, or dark clothing and makeup do not indicate self-harm When adolescents self-harm endorphins are released and they experience a numbing or pleasurable sensation. Like a drug, self-harming provides fast-acting relief for youth from their emotional distress or other stressors in their lives. What are signs and symptoms of self-harming behavior? Marks on their arms, legs, and abdomens. Finding knives, razor blades, and other sharp objects hidden in their bedroom. Regularly locking himself or herself in the bathroom or bedroom after a bad day. The youth s peers engage in self-harm behaviors. Wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather, such as long sleeves in summer. What can be done to help? Help your child to learn self-care, stress management, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and conflict-resolution. Foster a meaningful and close relationship with your child. Teach your child alternative coping strategies like exercise, ripping up an old newspaper, drawing, reading, squeezing ice, or listening to music. Avoid yelling, lecturing, put downs, harsh and lengthy punishments, invasion of privacy, threats and ultimatums. *If you have concerns regarding self-harming behaviors the school counselor s at Stanton are available to help. is a great website for more information and many more alternative coping strategies.

Reminders for the Upcoming Months Throughout the next few months, students will continue feeling the additional weight of the standardized assessments that will take place in April. Help to ensure that your child is getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and gets to school on time. Encourage your child and talk with them about any anxieties they may have about the tests. Frequently check ProgressBook with your student so you both have a good understanding of their academic progress. The third grading period ends on Friday, March 16.

INFLUENZA (FLU) What is the Flu? The flu is an illness caused by flu viruses. The flu may make people cough and have a sore throat and fever. They may also have a runny or stuffy nose, feel tired, have body aches, or show other signs they are not well. The flu happens every year and is more common in the fall and winter. People of all ages can get the flu, from babies and young adults to the elderly. How does the flu spread? People who have the flu can spread the virus by coughing or sneezing. Droplets released when a sick person coughs, sneezes, or talks can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. The droplets can also be inhaled into the lungs. People may also catch the flu by touching their mouth or nose after touching something with the virus on it, such as doorknobs, tables or an infected person s dirty hand. How do you know if you have the flu? How long can a person with the flu spread the virus to other people? Most people may be able to spread the flu from 1 day before showing symptoms to 5-7 days after symptoms begin. Severely sick people or young children may be able to spread the flu longer.

If you are worried that your child or family member is showing symptoms of flu, please take them to the doctor. If you need help finding a doctor, your school health nurse can advise you.
