Garry Betar wrote the tribute below which was read out at Alan s funeral service: Hello, my name is Garry Betar. I m a long time friend and shooting companion of Alan. I am also President of the Canberra International Clay Target Club, of which Alan was a foundation member. On behalf of myself and our members I extend our deepest sympathy to Alan s wife Penny and to his family on their loss. I would also like to say a few words for Alan on behalf of the club members. Alan was a member of the CICTC for a large part of his adult life. He spent may days in our company enjoying the shooting and in the company of his friends. Alan was not a fierce competitor. Rather, he enjoyed a casual round of skeet, or a wander around the simulated field course with people who enjoyed their shooting and hunting. Alan had a passion for hunting game birds over his pointers. He well understood the partnership between a good dog and a good master and liked nothing better than to see a dog work well. The shooting and the game were incidental to this joy. We will all miss Alan, but perhaps none more so than his faithful red setter. Of course Alan had immense knowledge on
the care and training of gun dogs and there are many club members who are better dog handlers today as a result of his advice. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Alan, but let us all be thankful for a life well lived. Thank you. OCTOBER SPORTING The October Sporting Shoot was a fairly quiet event with only two and a half squads attending. The weather was a pleasant 20 degrees, there were light intermittent clouds and a light and variable breeze. High Gun went to Norm Simms with 89/110, A grade was won by Rob Butterworth with 80 and C grade went to Garry Betar who shot a very impressive 85/100. Our thanks go to Neal Goodwin who helped set up the range on Wednesday plus all the people who refereed, scored and ran the buttons on the day. Here are the three grade winners. From left to right: Garry, Norm and Rob: DTL, 27 October 2013 The October DTL shoot was held in sunny conditions with 16 shooters in attendance. A program of all doubles isn t for everybody but it certainly was a bit of fun. Barry Skinner started well in the first event, 15 pair double rise, shooting the best score of 27/30. James Barron and James Ewart were close behind on 25/30. The second event was the championship on offer and again the James s shot well with James Barron taking the overall from James Ewart who consoled himself with the AA grade win. Warren Clark shot really well to take A grade and only be one shot back. The writing was on the wall when the James s nominated as a pair for the final event and that s how it turned out when they shot the only clean bracket. Peter Ewart and Geoff Mills took the second place over Steve McIntyre and myself after a very brief shoot off.. Sorry about that Steve. Event 1. 15pr Double rise Graded CD: AA 1st Barry Skinner 27/30 2 nd James Ewart, James Barron 25/30 A 1st Warren Clark, Geoff Mills 25/30 3rd Phillip Tse, Peter Ewart 23/25 B 1st Bob Churchill, Brian Moffitt 19/30 3rd James Jonklaas 18/30 C 1st Jana Balogh 16/30 Event 2, 25pr Double rise Championship: O/A James Barron 46/50 AA 1st James Ewart 45/50 A 1st Warren Clark 44/50 B 1st Brian Moffitt 32/50 C 1st Jana Balogh 32/50 Event 3 20 pairs Deauville Doubles: 1st James Barron/James Ewart 20/20 2nd Geoff Mills/Peter Ewart 19/20 +1 Overall High Gun: James Barron 71/80 CICTC Newsletter - December 2013 Page 2
Skeet: 20 October 2013 QUEANBEYAN 100T AMERICAN SKEET CHAMPIONSHIP Fine Sunny Day B Grade: 1st & O/L: J Pethybridge 92/100, 2nd: J O'Sullivan 90/100 C Grade: 1st: S Balogh 87/100, 2nd: G Fuller 75/100 DEEWR Corporate Day There was some good shooting by the DEEWR team on their corporate day in late November. Male HG was Damian on 19/25, Ladies HG was Sheree with a very good 17/25. November Trench Trench practice was conducted twice over the month of November. Good attendance from Majura Park Gun club kept the Trench Coordinator busy for most of the day. Overall, around 50 rounds were shot by about 14 attendees over the two days. Special mention goes to Paul Jenkins who shot a PB of 24/25 and also Chris and Rob Southwell who shot 109 and 107 from 125 respectively last Sunday. CICTC Newsletter - December 2013 Page 3
NOVEMBER SPORTING Some pics from the Xmas Medley: The normal three and a bit squads attended the November Sporting Clays, which was shot in pleasant (occasionally overcast) weather with L/V winds. All targets had been changed from our usual set up and one or two traps provided a bit of a challenge. The results were as follows: HG NormSimms/Rob Butterworth 81/100 AA Andy Vaccoro 79/100 C Greg Fuller As normal no Sporting will be held in December, but a round of Sporting was included in the Xmas shoot. :November DTL Christmas Medley Shoot It was a beautiful day for shooting and everybody enjoyed it. Rob Butterworth won the raffle and everyone managed to win something, so well done by all and see you all next year. The event winners were: 5 Stand: Brent Murphy Trench: Suzy Balogh DTL: Barry Skinner Skeet: Andrew Paddison High Gun: Andrew Paddison with a magnificent 98/100 A great day for shooting. The light was good and there was little wind. There was only one event contested being a 100 targets Point Score amongst the 15 shooters who turned up. Matt Gerstenberg had second in AA on 290/300 but the overall for the event and first in AA required shoot off between Willo Cameron and Ray Welch who were tied on 291/300. Surprisingly the shoot off only went three targets before Ray pulled a second barrel and Willo duly smashed his target with the first barrel. Warren Clark took A grade with 287/300, but Veteran shooter Ray Kearns only one point back on 286/300. B grade was won by Veteran Bob Churchill 281/300 with Nathan Wilson in second 265/300. Overall: Willo Cameron, 300/309. CICTC Newsletter - December 2013 Page 4
Christmas Sim Field On one of the best days in terms of weather for many a month, 10 squads participated in the Sim Field Christmas shoot for Bill Warriner took out high gun with a score of 90 with the other results as follows: AA: Mohammed Wazir 87, Russell Stephenson 86, Simon Weeding 83 A: Adam Shiels 88, Wayne Collins 85, Darren Jones 82, B: Paris James 74, Bob Tetley 71, Walid Wazir 69 C: Ross Cotsios 66, Roger Sands 65, Nick Malanos 61 Ladies: Allison Bell 58, Margaret Warriner 50, Jenny Kessey 48 Juniors: Grace Gschwend 75 (Fantastic! Watch out, Dad!) Vets: John Taylor 64, Col O Brian 48 Being the Christmas shoot there was a great selection of seasonal prizes, with all competitors receiving a Christmas prize of some description. A big thank you to John, Lorraine and Jennifer for all the help they have provided over the year to make the running of the event smooth. To all those whom came out and assisted in setting up, in particular Rob Butterworth and John Norris, thanks for your support. To JT & Nelson for trap maintenance your efforts are invaluable so it was good to see JT taking home a ham and Nelson winning the hamper raffle. Next year, changing to my hunting and habitat hat, we will see a couple of theme shoots i.e. pre ducks and fox season, WIT training and potentially an inter organisation hunters comp with both rifle and shotgun events (at different ranges of course). Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a safe new year... CICTC Newsletter - December 2013 Page 5
