The next meeting let s all bring in a new USSVI member as a probable Sub-Vet WWII associate. Thank you: Stacy. State Commander: Lee Allison has brought many feelings of pleasures and also sadness into our lives up to now: the worst thing is loosing a member so please keep roger and I informed so we can keep up to date we have Mary Evans and Bill Kopacka in assisted living or nursing homes. On the pleasure side was the Charleston area Navy Ball. 1

2 We were well represented by Henderson, Hanson, Jones, Powers, and myself, we made friends with the Nuclear school people who may help us in the long run. For now I can hardly wait but Roger is about to break news on Amberjack project I am so thankful for Rogers work which will leave behind us for future submariners and Americans to remember WWII Sub-Vets. So remember Subvets WWII is still alive, we have a convention in Green Bay Wisconsin on Labor Day week end I will keep all hands informed on what I receive from National. Roger: base secretary Submarine ball, boy who ever planned this one they did a good job, the program and the food was out standing, all were dressed in proper attire, Swede was dressed was in his formal dress uniform with hopes of some young lovely would sweep his off his feet but alas had to settle for a soft couch instead, the honor of cutting the cake was given to Marshall, as the oldest qualified sub-vet along with Swede, Willie and Lee, but for me when you look at all the young Navy personnel you feel a bit old. The food was so good and the desert yummy, but our waist lines were at risk, a good time was had by all. One of our USSVI shipmates went on eternal patrol Don Nusum; the services were on the York Town, we had a good showing for the service s the Navy Nuclear School, USSVI sub-vets and swamp fox Lee Allison. Nick did a good job as Chaplain for our service. Reminder to all associates that dues are due by July, the report goes in to WWII National the first of August, notices have been sent to all associates with a return envelopes; thanks. Amberjack memorial, received news from the graphics people they are blending colors for the amberjack names so we shall see how these turn out, I ll be glad when this is over and at the Point. Lee and I took a walk at the cold war memorial to see what spot would be best, so we need some inputs from all you where to place it. Abe has the calendars for 2010, these are the boats that operated in the Atlantic during WWII, and eight dollars will get you one with a special two for sixteen dollars. (Good deal) Swamp Fox meeting, at 1200 hours I ll say the blessings, then we eat, at 1245 we start the meeting with our pledge to our Flag, and this should be enough time for everyone to eat Dyal monument informed me that the graphics people were blending the colors for the Amberjack plates; I hope to have a sample at our next meeting. The WWII post cards that were discussed at the meeting: Abe Jenkins has samples and they look good, Lee is working an the ordering and shipping to see what sort of deal he can come up with Minutes April meeting 09 Meeting was held at Ryan s steak house in Summerville SC. Meeting called to order by our chapter president Stacy Power, the pledge of allegiance by Willie Jones, the welcome by Stacy and followed by the reading of the purpose of our organization. The tolling of the bell: For our lost shipmates on eternal patrol, Mike Emerson, the reading of the names, Lee Allison. Stacy power: any guests? Lee Allison updates; we were well represented at the submarine ball the Master Chief of the nuclear school and Admiral Richardson, along with the USSVI gave a lot of attention to the World War sub-vets. We have too many things in the works right now but Bob Snyder has something to say. Berkeley county s old office building that use to be the old hospital, the American legion is installing three flag poles, they have bricks to be put in the circle, if you want to have your name to be on one of these for a donation, Bob gave a donation for two bricks, one for the WWII Swamp fox chapter and the other for the USSVI chapter, the bricks are 35 dollars each, the dedication is on the 4 th of July after the parade, they would like both organizations to be there if possible. Thanks Bob! WWII calendars, something different this year, all the boats thet served in the Atlantic during WWII will be featured along with an article written by one of the daughters from her dads memoir s these boats were stationed in Faslane Scotland, Cold War for those of us on diesels that operated from there it was good liberty. A new approach will be used this year Abe will announce what is going on at the next meeting. Stacy: it is good to see Ben Heber back at our meeting, good to see you shipmate from all of us Bill Roberts, lee didn t you bring up at the ussvi meeting about the post cards that WWII is going to have available. 2

3 Roger base secretary: Abe was going top talk about this, these are the cards sent out at each of the commissioning of the WWII subs, the ones we saw were drawing and looked real nice and would be a good keepsake, we took a poll at the USSVI meeting to see who was interested and we got about 30 also and the Nuclear school was interested, this is still in the works. Lee, I will order a set of these and hopefully have them at the next USSVI meeting. Roger: base secretary Approval of the minutes for March 09, motion and seconded, passed it now law.. Steve Nelms base commander to all WWII members have you had your picture taken for our records and we also want to post the up at the after battery, Mike Emerson has promised to make a board (picture box) so we can display our WWII members. Treasurer report, Mike Emerson Monies were discussed, expense and balance were covered if you need information call me. Old Business: Stacy, Amberjack memorial, Roger, Dyal monuments hasn t received the proofs as yet when we do we will arrange a meeting with the cold war, they are blending the colours when I get them I ll let the powers to be know and arrange a meet at the point. Lee; a comment, we owe a lot to him for the news letter. Mike Emerson. To the WWII Vets, have you heard of the honor flights? An organization that fly s out of Columbia to Washington, the trip includes a motor coach to all the memorials in the DC area this is for any WWII veteran who has never seen these, what does it cost, a stamp I have the applications, read it over it will be some time September November, now if you other then a WWII vet you must be physically fit to help the WWII vet, and the cost to you is 500 dollars for the day if your interested I have the applications. We are looking for people, the men assisting the vets; two from the news media will be known as Guardians. The web site is see me for applications. Lee, intro guest Chief Kris from Nuclear school, for those who went to the submarine ball he is the one who built the WWII submarine that was on display as you walked into the ball room, it was beautifully made, he makes models and is good at it, Lee asked chief Kris to our meeting to see if he could make a model of the USS Amberjack, with his research the model would be a little different then the model at the submarine ball, the sail was not converted, the base model would cost around 87 dollars, with the modifications 80 dollars more, he passed some pictures to show, as for the cost Chief Kris said he would not charge us for his work, he loves to do as a hobby, and epically for the WWII this would not be displayed out side, this model is perfect never seen one so precise. Options dollars as seen at the ball, the Amberjack model would be dollars and the super model with a gun crew for a few dollars more. A discussion followed sighting that the ussvi would inherit the model when all or when we close down. Further discussion on when we should decide to order/buy the model Dave Mueller and the after battery donated dollars toward the purchase of the model; Roger made a motion to purchase this model, this was seconded and passed by all hands, the next topic was are we going to go with the old style sail, after discussion we decided to go with option two which is the same model as we saw at the submarine ball. PMC Hill WWII sub-vet and his wife donated an additional 25 dollars toward the model, our thanks. Good of the order: Nick USSVI Chaplain: The passing of Don Nusum passed into eternal rest on the morning of April 15, 2009 yesterday; the viewing will be this Friday at Stuhr west Ashley , please wear your vest! Funeral services aboard the USS Yorktown Monday morning at 1000 please muster at 0930, Navy will be involved we will not fold the flag but we will hold our two bell ceremony weather permitting this will be done in front of the Clamagore, this will be announced. The uniform will be vests light blue shirt and tie with Kaki pants. Nick will find out if there is going to be a charge, I doubt if there will be. Benediction, Roger. 5 Information on the Honor Flights Inaugural Flight - November 15, 2008 Depart Columbia on USAir 8:30 am Arrive Reagan National 10:00 Proceed to WWll Memorial via motor coach. Remain at Memorial for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Presentation of American and South Carolina Flags at South Carolina Pillar Lunch Visit Viet Nam and Korean Veterans Memorials and Lincoln Memorial Visit Iwo Jima Memorial Coaches will proceed to Arlington Cemetery with a stop at The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier. At 4:00 pm we will view the changing of the guard. Board coaches for airport - Leave DC at 6:00 pm, arrive Columbia 7:30pm Memorial Day in Summerville, Monday the 25th at Parks cemetery had a good turn out, this by far was the largest number of Veterans and civilians ever USSVI and WWII were represented. We need to tell our grandchildren the sacrifices our fallen comrades gave us so we can live in peace, thank you. Good turnout Lee and Willie In the Front row 5

What the price of freedom cost Myself I grew up in North Africa during the Second World War was bombed and strafed By both the Germans and the Italians I remember One night my Dad diving down to the bomb shelter, One landed in our front yard destroying every Window and blowing off our three inch door, My play time was picking up shrapnel and Going to burnt out planes to see what I could Find but a lot of kids got killed by picking up Live ordinance, I just want to thank all those men And woman who gave their lives that I might live. Whenever I saw the English or American flag I Knew I was safe, now you re even lucky to have Some one even stands as it goes by or shows it Respect!
