Kiwanis Kapers Official publication of the Kiwanis Club of Fountain Hills, AZ february 2016 Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time Website for those nice shirts Immediate Past President Al Roselieb and current Vice President Bernie Hoenle and wife Marcia have been fielding some questions lately about those nice-looking collared shirts they ve been wearing to meetings and other events. We announced the availability of those shirts last fall, however, we didn t have any real-life models displaying them at events at the time. Semi-custom shirts with Kiwanis branding on them can be found at The site has various styles of shirts to choose from along with colors. Different art work can be selected along with adding the club name to the shirts as well as some embroidery. Prices are reasonable and vary depending upon style and customization. Single-shirt orders can be placed as well. These shirts are different than the bright yellow T- shirts that we are selling through the club. There is no requirement to wear any of these types of shirts to projects, etc., but wearing Kiwanis-branded clothing and your K pin around the community does enhance the visibility of our club and likely will prompt questions from folks allowing you to explain all about our wonderful club! Jerry Comeau and Cecelia Gugliemo work with a young bicycle rider at an intersection. Bike Safety Rodeo Keeping our bicycling youngsters safe on local streets The mission of Kiwanis International is serving the children of the world, and one way to serve kids is to keep them safe. That was the main motivation behind the first-ever Noon Kiwanis Bike Safety Rodeo held Jan. 23. The event also included a car seat inspection. We had much support for this safety event, and various community sectors pitched in to help us stage this program, said Mike Scharnow, Noon Kiwanis Club president. All of our volunteers and participants enjoyed the event and how we set it up, so we will definitely stage another (cont. on Page 4) Inspectors Boyd Tong and John Stubbs examine a car seat.
Page 2 Kiwanis kapers A WORD FROM PRESIDENT MIKE SCHARNOW What s that formula again? Fellow Kiwanians: I d say our two first meetings of 2016 have been awesome. The clubhouse has been full as members congregate, visiting Kiwanians from around the country stop in for a visit, we ve recognized some outstanding student leaders in our School District and we ve inducted two new members (welcome Roger Bates and Craig Gildersleeve!). Let s keep the momentum going! I know we have some other residents coming forward to join our club, so February is already looking like another sweet month (couldn t resist with Valentine s Day coming up and all that). What has impressed the new members and first-time visitors the most is our impressive array of service projects, fundraisers and other activities. It takes more than a meeting to make a club or organization an outstanding group of people. It takes enthusiastic people who love what they are doing. Remember The Formula slogan that we ve adopted for the year? Love it! Share it! Live it! And people can see The Formula working within our club. The enthusiasm for providing service and making a difference in this community nay, the world is contagious. People see that and they want to be a part of that as well. Keep up the great work and keep inviting people to our projects and meetings. We love Kiwanis and what we do. So naturally we want to share that with others. And we live it every day by making time to make a difference in Fountain Hills. Keep inviting! It will only make us a better club than we already are. January was chocked full of projects a community blood drive, Kiwanis Across the Border (Nogales day trip and party), a visit to the Ronald McDonald House, a trip to the RM House by our Aktion Club, meetings of renewed Builders and K-Kids clubs, a visit to Extended Hands Food Bank, manning a table at the Volunteer Expo and, of course, our first ever Bike Safety Rodeo. Whew! We have two fundraisers in February and plenty of other things going on. Love it! Share it! Live it! Distinguished Noon Kiwanians What a distinguished looking group of Noon Kiwanians! Paul Appeldorn, Mike Scharnow and Jean Linzer were recognized by Kiwanis International as being distinguished members for the Kiwanis year They were recognized for their recruiting skills, as each brought at least two new members into the club, along with their participation in service projects. Phyllis Horan also was recognized as being distinguished, but of course she couldn t be in the picture because she has relocated to Texas. Congratulations to them all! All four were recognized at the midyear Southwest District conference held this past weekend in Prescott.
Kiwanis Kapers Page 3 Kiwanis Kodak Moments Mayor Linda Kavanagh stopped by the Noon Kiwanis booth at the recent Volunteer Expo at the Community Center. Thanks to Betty Pantuso, Marcia and Bernie Hoenle for manning the booth and talking to residents about the Kiwanis mission. The high school choir performed for our club just prior to Christmas. As always, the group inspired our group and showcased their many talents and abilities. Our club donated $500 to the high school music program and its talented director, Lynn Truby. Hoenles talk up Kiwanis to prospective members at the Expo. High school Pacesetters! Recognizing the January Falcon Leaders from Fountain Hills Middle School.
Page 4 Kiwanis Kapers Bike Safety Rodeo was small but mighty (cont. from Page 1) rodeo next year. Look for it again next January, possibly in a different location. Kids who participated were able to dodge in and out of cones, test their braking/stopping skills on a bicycle and even went through a mock intersection complete with stop signs and moving vehicles. Doug Carlson from Fountain Hills Bikes was on hand to perform a safety inspection on bikes, and three inspectors were present to look at infant car seats. Scharnow paid kudos to the Fountain Hills Rural/Metro Fire Department for showing up in full force; to the McKee Branch of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale (and Rotaract group) for helping with refreshments, snacks and raffle; to the School District for use of the old Four Peaks campus; to Calvary Chapel for opening its doors; to Justin Weldy and his Town Street Department for the cones and barricades; to the Parks Dept. for the chalker; and to other volunteers who pitched in. Super big thanks to our K-Kids and Builders, Roger Bates and his Holy Spokes Bicycling Club, to Doug Carlson of Fountain Hills Bikes and Marcia and Bernie Hoenle of Noon Kiwanis for pulling this together, Scharnow added. This was our first rodeo, so to speak, and we plan on making this an annual event. Promoting bicycling safety and safety in general among children is paramount, so we want to continue providing this event to the community. Getting a high five after successfully completing the bike rodeo course. The event will be back next year, possibly at a different location. Plenty of cool prizes were given out after the event. This was the friendly greeting and registration table at the bike safety event. One factor in having a safe bike is having enough air in the tires. Safety inspections were performed by Fountain Hills Bikes with the help of Kiwanis volunteers at the rodeo. All those who participated enjoyed the event. A big thanks to teen volunteers from the McKee Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs and Hans De Jong from Holy Spokes for manning the snacks and refreshment table.
Kiwanis Kapers Page 5 Dancing across the border Four Noon Kiwanians danced their way across the Mexican border as they participated in the annual trip to Nogales, Sonora, Mexico in conjunction with the Santa Cruz Kiwanis Club in Nogales, Ariz. Al Roselieb, Keith Junk and Marcia and Bernie Hoenle made the day trip for the Kiwanis Across the Border party Jan. 16. This is a project our club has participated in for many years. Pepe and Ramona Wise of Nogales once again organized an awesome Three Kings Day party for the poor families just across the border. The fiesta included clothing, toys, other gifts, food, refreshments and free dance lessons from Keith Junk. The mayor of Nogales made an appearance and helped pass out gifts to the families. Our club donated $500 toward the project along with more than $300 raised by collecting aluminum kans thanks to Paul Kan Man Appeldorn. Those who attended said the event was fun and heartwarming. The children were well behaved as they had to wait for the mayor to show before gifts could be doled out. It was agreed by the group that this is a worthy project that needs to continue into the future. Keith Junk, left, found a new dance partner in the crowd, and the mayor of Nogales, above, helped pass out gifts to the many children in attendance. Yummy Sonoran hot dogs proved to the hit the spot for the hungry and large crowd that showed up for the Mexican fiesta. A group check presentation from our club to Pepe and Ramona Wise of the Santa Cruz Nogales, Ariz. Kiwanis Club. What kid doesn t love a new toy during the holidays?

Kiwanis Kapers Page 7 Aktion Club helps out The Aktion Club is all smiles after completing a job well done at the Roanoke House in Phoenix. Active group pitches in at Ronald McDonald House Our Aktion Club, based out of the STARS facility in Scottsdale, continues to shine in the Southwest District as it regularly performs service projects. The group is now making a monthly trip to the Ronald McDonald House to make sack lunches for the family in addition to help clean up the facility and perform other light duties. The staff and families at the Ronald McDonald House have been impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication of these adults with developmental disabilities. The Aktion Club really is showing off the many abilities of its members. Regular meetings and service projects are open to all Noon Kiwanians. You will be richly rewarded if you get involved with this group. Photos by Jon Flash Geller

Roger Bates and Craig Gildersleeve are the newest members of the greatest service organization in Fountain Hills the Noon Kiwanis Club. Roger was sponsored by Mike Scharnow, while Craig was introduced to the club by John Rosenquist. We welcome them into the friendly Noon Kiwanis fold and look forward to working with them on future service projects and fundraisers! Four Peaks Women s Club Our club recently donated $500 to the Four Peaks Women s Club in recognition of their members helping us out at the Oktoberfest event held in Fountain Park. Their club provided about one-third of our volunteer labor force as we collected tickets at the entrance gates and sold food and drink tickets inside the event. Barb Hansen and club President Mary Franken were all smiles as they accepted the check. The club supports all kinds of children-related causes, aligning nicely with our mission of serving the children of the world.
