10 10 of 17 1/30/2018, 2:19 PM 2018 Hawaii Regional Science Bowl 20 teams represen ng 14 schools competed in the 2018 Hawaii Regional Science Bowl compe on, which was held yesterday at Honolulu Community College. Iolani entered two teams, Team 1 (Davey Huang 18, Norton Kishi 18, Tate McAluney 19, and Jake Fleischer 19) and Team 2 (Arupa Poudyal 18, Ashley Kim 20, and Mika Ishii 20). Team 2 went undefeated a er five rounds of round robin compe on. Team 1 suffered their only loss of round robin compe on in a spirited head to head match between the two Iolani teams, with the final score Iolani 1 and Iolani 2 finished as the top two teams in their bracket and both advanced to the single elimina on rounds. In their quarterfinal match, Iolani 2 was knocked out by the defending 2017 champion Punahou Team 1. Iolani 1 defeated previously unbeaten Maui in their quarterfinal match, but were also bested by Punahou 1 in the semifinals. They finished strong by bea ng Moanalua in the third place match. The teams earned $100 and $300 for the school science department for their quarterfinalist and third place finishes. Punahou 1 went on to win in the finals and will represent Hawaii at the Na onal Science Bowl in April. Thank you coach Darin Kohara and other faculty members who supported the team. K 8 Fire Up Friday Walkathon Lower School students, paired with buddies from 7th and 8th grade, par cipated in a UNICEF Kid Power Walkathon on Friday morning. During the walk, they earned over 1 million steps toward their goal of accumula ng 300,000,000 steps to unlock $5000 in funding to provide food for 83 children around the world who are suffering from severe malnutri on. To learn more about this program, and to see how many steps they have accumulated, see Iolani UNICEF Kid Power Campaign. In Lower School Chapel, students learned about The Rev. Dr. Mar n Luther King, Jr. s dream for the world. In religion classes, they wrote about their own dreams for the world. These dreams decorated the Lower School walkway.

12 12 of 17 1/30/2018, 2:19 PM A er the walk, students gathered on the football field for a final cheer. They were reminded that Dr. King s dream could not change the world if it only remained in his heart. The dream had to come alive in people s ac ons. Dr. King ~ and countless others ~ made the dream come alive in their two feet as they marched, in their voices as they sang songs of freedom, and in their prayers as they gathered together in churches across the South. Chaplain Simopoulos, a er reading aloud some of their dreams, reminded them that they need to find ways to make their dreams come alive not just in their hearts, but in their words and ac ons. Here are some of their dreams. I have a dream: That there would be no war, no killing, no guns and no fighting That everyone would have a family, and that all families would be able to live somewhere safe with enough food and clean water That everyone can have homes, and that guinea pigs would have homes, too That all kids and grownups would live in peace That no kids would have homework That children would live in a world of peace forever, and no one would live in fear That no child would ever go hungry That we could end global warming That we could end stereotyping and bullying That women women would be treated the same as men That we would have peace with our enemies That presidents would get along That everyone would be smiling, kind and fair

13 13 of 17 1/30/2018, 2:19 PM That kids all over the world would be able to have a healthy life from the moment they are born That there would be no more suffering in the world That everyone in the world would have watermelon That all people would have books to read That there would be no more hatred That families would spend more time together making their family bond closer than ever before That we would stop polluting our world with trash That one day we won t have to worry about threats That every child would be able to go to school That everyone in the world would find and understand God s amazing grace Congratula ons paddling team Congratula ons to our varsity paddling mixed crew that finished second at the ILH Championships on Tuesday and qualified for Saturday's HHSAA Championships in Hilo.
