Inside this issue: President s Message Minutes of last meeting Officers & Directors Activities Report 4 Upcoming Events 5 My Mustang Story 6 Sponsors 7 Notices 8 NEW MEETING LOCATION!!!!! If you go to the King s in Harmarville or to North Park on May 6, you ll be all alone. The May 6 meeting will be held at Boyce Park. See details inside. Greetings Pony Lovers - By the time you receive this newsletter, this year s event season will already be off and running. Dwight Hutton, our Activity Director, has really gotten us organized this year. You should have received his first Activity & Event Bulletin, listing upcoming events. This is the first year that the Irwin car cruise provided a Mustang corral, so a bunch of us drove over on April 25 th to check it out. The cruise had a record turnout, and over nine Mustangs from the GPMC showed up. Among those present were the Rossmanns, the Huttons, the Cipas, Carl Cramer, Chris Levy, John Holmes, the Hills, the Barkers, and two hopefully soon-to-be new/returning members. Check out our complete activities list on pages 4 & 5. And a final reminder for the Fourth Annual Pennies for Patients Poker Run, to be held on May 17 th. You can register the day of the Run, or you can pre-register using the form on the website: We ll also have registration forms at the May meeting, along with directions to Tom Henry Chevrolet. Jennie and I will be at the Run as the poker judges. All proceeds go to the St. Barnabas charity fund. If you haven t already, don t forget to register for this year s Can-Am. The article in last month s newsletter contains details on how to get Canadian currency, etc. If you re interested, let us know when you ll be driving up, and we can try to coordinate a couple of convoys. The Niagara Classic Mustang Club tells us they ve got everything ready to make this a most memorable event, so let s make sure the GPMC is well represented in Ontario on June 26 th. To get the latest up-to-the-minute info and a copy of the registration form, check out the NCMC s website at: We had our best turnout of the year at our April meeting. We begin our series of five outdoor meetings in May. Based on feedback we got from Dwight s activity survey, members would like to try some other summer meeting venues, rather than hold them all in North Park as we ve done in the past. Therefore, our May meeting will be held in Boyce Park at the Hillcourt shelter (second choice is the Primrose shelter if Hillcourt is unavailable.) Directions to the park/shelter have already been sent out, or you can download them from our website using the Meetings tab. I look forward to seeing you all on May 6 th. Keep those motors runnin, Ken Barker

As it is just not possible to do everything this year, we will drop the not so good events from this year and replace them next year with new ones. Activities Flyer All of you should have received our first Activities Flyer in the mail recently. We will be sending this out 2 or 3 more times this year just to keep you apprized of the upcoming events and any changes that may occur. Off And Running - Several members participated in the Irwin Car Show this past weekend. The weather was beautiful and those who didn t make it missed a great day. Hopefully we can do another car show together soon and more members will attend!! Cruise And Brunch May 3 We have had an extremely low response so far for this event. Please RSVP if you plan on attending. If it s too far to drive your Stang, bring the family car instead! If we don t get a few more responses, we will likely cancel this activity and possibly re-schedule it for later this year. Starlight Service Night August 21- This is a new addition to our list. Please come out and help the North Way Christian Community with this fabulous car show and their worthy charities. 6 GPMC News May 2009 Page 6 MY MUSTANG STORY By Tom Horner This car was my college graduation present (WVU) to myself paid for by myself! I graduated from WVU in the summer of 1968 and soon visited Eger Ford to see if they had any 1968 Shelbys, particularly a GT 500 KR fastback I think the best looking of the earlier Mustangs. Alas, they only had a white GT- 350 convertible, which didn t do it for me (early indication of an incredible lack of foresight). At this point, the 1969 Mach 1 s and Shelby s were being introduced. I was completely blown away by the Mach 1 with the CJ engine. After saving a few $$, I ordered the Mach 1 in January I reasoned that the Shelby was more desirable, but not $1,000 more desirable (lack of foresight strikes again)! The Mach 1 was delivered in March A friend, with a similar CJ 428 Auto Mach 1, and I spent the next five summers occasionally drag racing in Pure Stock classes, mostly at PID in Bridgeville, and occasionally at New Alexandria. We usually met in the elimination rounds, as the CJ s almost always won in class. I won eliminator once at New Alexandria and had it in the bag once at Bridgeville, but got on the brakes a little too early in order to not lower the class record (lack of foresight thing again). In those days, one of my favorite sights was being able to see the 396 Chevy s in my rear view mirror as I went through the traps because they were sooo far behind. The only in-class loss that I can remember in 5 years was to a GTO that somehow managed to be about ½ second faster than any GTO in town (slightly illegal maybe?). Ford wasn t aware of it, but they were sponsoring my racing. I bought the car at Cliff Heath Ford in Mt. Lebanon where another friend was a mechanic and notorious street racer. So every time I would bend a valve or the rear end would go south, he would fix it under warranty, after asking me which gear ratio I wanted this time. 4:30 s were great at the track, but hard to take on the street. The car currently has 52,000 miles on it, 15,000 of which were from the 1 st year. After the 1 st five years of drag racing, the car was retired, engine rebuilt and used occasionally in the summers. Although deterioration was minor through the years (primarily rear wheel returns rusted off); it necessitated new outer wheel houses and quarter panels. I am now in the process of completely restoring it to near concours/street condition, although I may hop it up a bit. Well, that s my story and I m sticking to it. One of my favorite things was being able to see the 396 Chevy s in my rear view mirror...
