1 GPMC NEWS The Greater Pittsburgh Mustang Club Newsletter Visit our website at Volume 27 Issue 8 August, 2012 Next Meeting Sunday, August 5, Monroeville Community Park In conjunction with the Annual Hospitality Picnic NOTE: The meeting time is 12:00 NOON, with the picnic open to the public at 2:00 PM See Map and Directions on Pages 6-7 Greetings Pony Lovers We just returned today from Can-Am in Erie, PA. It was a very fun time. Mike Trinko and his wife Laurie put a lot of effort into planning the weekend s activities. But disappointingly, it was pretty much a two club event, as NEOMC and MVMC were both absent and there was only one car from Canada. Fortunately, nine GPMC cars attended a great turnout for us. See inside this newsletter for more details and photos. Because of difficulties encountered with scheduling Can-Am this year, we re hoping to settle on the third weekend in June going forward. If we can get the other clubs to agree, next year s Can- Am will be held from June in Canada. As I write, PVGP week in Pittsburgh has already started. The Club will be participating in most of the week-long events, including the Walnut Street Invitational Show, the Cruise in Homestead, the Downtown Car Show & Parade, and of course Race Weekend. On Race Weekend (July 21 & 22) the Club tent will be prominently displayed in the Mustang section of the International Car Show. Also, on Sunday the Club has reserved two members-only spaces in Patron Parking. We ll be in C54 & C55 which have a better view of the race course than the spaces we ve had in past years. The Friday following the PVGP (July 27 th ) is the Club s Service Nite at the Starlite Car Cruise in Wexford. The folks at Northway really count on our help, so come on out so we have a good showing. You don t have to stay the entire time. Come early and leave early, or come late and leave late. They especially need help with setup and tear down. It will be Cobra/Exotics Nite, so there will be plenty of cool cars to see. Our July meeting at Monroeville Community Park was very well attended, with plenty of food to go around. Thanks to all the members who brought goodies, especially Dwight & Mary for the hot dogs. Don t forget, our next meeting will be on Sunday, August 5 th back at Monroeville Community Park for our annual Hospitality Picnic. The Club provides burgers, dogs & beverages the rest is pot luck. If you haven t told the Rossmann s what you re bringing, you can contact them at vrossmann@comcast.net. I hope to see you there. Keep those motors runnin, Ken
2 GPMC NEWS August 2012 Page 2 Minutes of July 11, 2012 Combined Board and General Meeting The combined meeting was called to order by Ken B., President, at 7:30 PM, at Monroeville Community Park, Monroeville. The sign-in sheet was passed around, and the 50/50 was sold by Charlyn. New Members: Gary B., 2012 Black/Red coupe; Steve and Kathy M., 64 1/5, Light Yellow/Light Blue convertible and 1981 Pontiac Firebird. Minutes: The June 6, 2012 Meeting Minutes were reviewed. It was moved by Mark Mo. and 2 nd by Bob Q. to approve the minutes. Motion carried. Correspondence: None. Treasurer's Report: Jason U. reviewed income and expenses. Most of the income and expenses are related to the All Ford-Powered Car Show. The majority of income consisted of Registration/T-shirt sales, Basket and 50/50 raffles, merchandise, an additional donation to the Cancer Institute, and Dues, 50/50 raffle, and merchandise sold at the June meeting. Expenses were to Ken B. for postage, Cheryl B. for the All Ford-Powered Show dash plaques and donuts, Turtle Creek Sportswear for Show shirts, Weldon Acres Trophy for Show trophies, McCartney Agency for D&O insurance policy annual premium, and Waterfront Embroidery for special order shirt. It was moved by Andrew T. and 2 nd by Dwight H. to approve the Treasurer s Report. Motion carried. Membership: Mary reported we have several new members since our last meeting. The updated directory will be sent out at the end of the month. Membership dues are now $10 through the end of September with membership status to the end of December. Effective October 1, the membership dues for 2013 are $20. Newsletter: Andrew reported that Jennie will be helping him with the August Newsletter and the deadline is July 15. Send photos, articles, and event to gpmc.newsletter@yahoo.com. Merchandise: John reported we had a good month because of the All Ford-Powered Car Show. He thanked Ray for helping at the booth. He mentioned the size of the patch had to be changed on the ladies shirts because it was too big. John also mentioned that the shirts will be American made. Webmaster: Jennie reported that the busiest day ever was June 11, the day after the All Ford-Powered Show, when we had 2,500 page views. She thinks it s because of the photo galleries. The most-viewed pages are: Home, Upcoming Events, Announcements, Calendar, Membership, and whatever the next big event is. In the days leading up to the All Ford-Powered Show, the listing for the show got a lot of views. Currently, the Can-Am page is very active. Jennie thanked Toni G. and Scott U. for the car show pictures. Jennie mentioned there is activity on the Pony Chat, Contact Us, and Facebook pages. Please continue to send her your car pictures. TRCCC: For Ron, Ken reported there was not a lot going on. MCA: Ed reported on the MCA Grand National show to be held over Labor Day in Sept., 2013 in Orlando, FL. Registration forms should be available in August, He also discussed the 2014 shows in Las Vegas and in Charlotte in tribute of Mustangs. If you joined MCA recently, please send Ed your MCA number and expiration date when you get it. Check the MCA website for ongoing info ( Event Wrap-up: Ed reported on the All Ford-Powered Show. There were 119 registrations. He also reviewed the feedback comments. One suggestion was having more trash bins and a recycle bin. Charlyn suggested giving bottled water and providing some type of shade. Ed added next year there will be two lines of cars, which will extend to the back of the body shop for registration. (This should relieve the traffic congestion when entering the show.) Regarding the Goodie Bags, it may not be worth doing them anymore, because it is a lot of work and the contents are now mostly advertisements. Ed added that Cheryl would like to have someone else handle the gift baskets next year. Jennie suggested having more door prizes and Mary suggested that members solicit door prizes from local businesses. Ed reviewed the income and expenses from the All Ford-Powered Show. He added that the club is in a position to make a donation to the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. It was moved by Mark Mo. and 2 nd by Andrew T. to make the donation. Motion carried. Discussion followed regarding the 2013 All Ford-Powered Show, which would normally be held after the Carlisle show. However, that would fall on Father s Day weekend. The question was when it should be held -- the week before Carlisle or June 23. Ed will check if June 23 is available at Shults Ford.
3 GPMC NEWS August 2012 Page 3 Jason reported on the Starlite Mustang Night and thanked everyone who attended. There were 15 members who attended. Ken mentioned that the Service Night is scheduled for July 27 and asked those who will be going to arrive early to help direct traffic. Ken also reported on the Rotary Club July 4 th Parade in Harmony. Six cars participated and he thanked those who attended. Activities: Dwight mentioned this coming weekend (July 13-15, 2012) is the CanAm in Erie and six members will be attending. Also the Hospitality Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, August 5, at Monroeville Park, Pavilion 3, at Noon. Bill and ValJean are chairing it. Non-members are welcome to attend from 2:00 to 4:00. The Pgh. Vintage Grand Prix is scheduled for July Parking is available for $30 for two days and can be reserved on-line. Ken added the club has reserved two Patron Parking spaces (C54 and C55), which have a better view of the racetrack. He asked members to join the club on Saturday to park in the Mustang section. Volunteers are needed to man the Club tent and setup a canopy(ies) in the patron parking area. Regarding the 2013 PVGP, Mark Mo. Mentioned that 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the Mustang. Ken added he would like to have our club participate since the Mustang will be the Marque for 2013 and he would try to get some of the other CanAm clubs involved. Jason and Mark said that Ed is going to write an article about this for the Mustang Times. Dwight reminded members of the upcoming Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival and Winery Tour (Sept 7-9). Ed and Dwight discussed car cruises this year and suggested doing just one cruise. The proposed date is Friday, August 17, at Kings from 6-9 PM. Upcoming Events: Listed in the newsletter and on the website. Old Business: None New Business: John mentioned he and Carole saw former member George F. who said hi to everyone. Ed reported he saw a flyer from Shults Ford-Powered stating they were Proud Sponsors of the Greater Pittsburgh Mustang Club. Other: Dan C. won the 50/50. 4 GPMC NEWS August 2012 Page 4 UPCOMING EVENTS GPMC Activities are listed in bold print. Some dates and events are subject to change, so please check the website and most recent newsletter for the latest information. July July 27 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix GPMC Volunteer Night at Starlite August 5 Club Picnic, Monroeville Park, Monroeville details on pages 6-7 Sunset over Lake Erie at Can-Am 2012 News From the West Coast We heard from Ed Werner and thought you d enjoy reading what he s been up to lately: In the 4 years since I joined GPMC, I have not participated in many events. The ones I did were always a lot of fun and I met the nicest people. Pat and I have moved from Pittsburgh to the West Coast to be closer to two of our three sons and our only grandsons: 9 & 6. Hopefully we will live long enough to see them grow into their teenage years. They have already laid claim to my Bullitt. The Bullitt has been resident in WA since December and is now licensed here with plate V8MUSIC. The Bullitt has been personalized and is now a sheep in wolf s clothing. My sons gave me an MRT 68 style hood for my 70 th Birthday. I have painted mirrors with turn signals, MRT rear sequential turn signals. SHR lower grill rear quarter flush louvers. Rocky Mountain Graphics rear trunk panel. I have purchased and yet to install brushed aluminum center caps for wheels and anodized SHR rear medallion. I will paint the center circle matt black before mounting in place of the Bullitt Medallion. For shows only, I have front and rear reproductions of 1968 CA black plates from Bullitt movie. The sheep part is that I have done nothing under the hood thus far, but Woltz and Wind Ford installed Ford Racing shocks and springs from KR500 (lowers 1.5 inches from GT height) and KR500 exhaust (loudest legal in 50 states). Car looks and sounds awesome! 320 HP is enough for a 73 year old to handle so far. I stored my Z4 in Pittsburgh for use when we come for medical appointments (no doctors accept Medicare here except emergency rooms and specialists) and for East Coast road trips. I am also hopeful that someone in Club can provide me with a reasonable reference to drop a 5.0L Coyote into the Z4 to build a modern Cobra.
5 GPMC NEWS August 2012 Page 5 Can-Am Weekend 2012 Can-Am 2012 was a big success. Thirty cars were registered representing four Mustang clubs. Pittsburgh was well represented with ten cars present nine from GPMC and one from SWAMP. Due to conflicting schedules neither of the Ohio clubs was present. One car came from NCMC in Canada, and LEMOC members made up the rest. Overall, the GPMC had 18 members in attendance, as follows: Baker, Barkers, Cramers, Duncans, Hoovers, Lanes, Mulkeys, Reiszs & Wolvertons. It s good to see so many of our newer members participating in Can-Am. Friday night kicked off with an outdoor corn roast, followed by a hayride to the top of a nearby hill to watch the beautiful sunset over Lake Erie. Saturday morning was a tour along the Erie shoreline and around Presque Isle, with a lunch stop at the famous Sara s Diner. In the afternoon we headed east into New York for a scenic drive around Findley Lake. We then headed to Lake Erie Speedway for dinner, to watch the races and get our cars out on the track. Despite the heavy rain Sunday morning, it was an enjoyable drive down to the historic Riverside Inn for brunch. The Canadian bacon award (the pink pigs) is now safely residing in Erie until next year.
