1 $0.00 The Greater Pittsburgh Mustang Club Newsletter June 2017 Volume 32 Issue 6 GPMC TODAY Visit our Website at Dear Fellow Mustang Enthusiasts, Finally, cruising season has arrived. Clean up those ponies and join us for great cruising and fun events. Our annual Spring Stampede cruise on May 13th did not include rain! We met at Miracle Mile Shopping Center with around 20 Mustangs and cruised back roads to Bushy Run Battlefield near Harrison City for a great guided tour of the battlefield. Back onto scenic back roads we cruised to Ohiopyle State Park and sat along the falls for a BYOL lunch. We also enjoyed the ice cream and chocolate shop. Back on beautiful two lane roads the sun came out and the tops went down. We arrived in Connellsville for Fayette County Train Day and enjoyed a house size model train display built by one man! Following that, a group of us cruised top down to Green Dance winery for a tasting, then on to dinner at Leo s Pub and Grill in Mt. Pleasant. Another fun and informative cruise by our Master Cruise Director Tim Baker. Thanks Tim. Our all-ford Power charity show is coming up fast on June 11th at Shults Ford in Harmerville. Please sign up to work this important Charity event for the Club and build some baskets for our raffle basket drawing. The registration form for the June 16-18th multi Mustang Club Can-Am is out so sign up and make your hotel reservations soon if you want to stay on site. The Vintage Grand Prix is on the weekend of July 15th with race on the 16th. This is an important car themed charity event for Pittsburgh and GPMC traditionally participates with Mustangs parked on the fairways, volunteers, donations and a tent with food for members. Go online for information and plan on attending and enjoying this major event with Club members. Our meeting place at the Wexford Kings shutdown unexpectedly and we moved our last two winter season meetings (April and May) to the Cranberry North Park Lounge on Rt. 19. The membership will need to vote again on a new winter season meeting place. Please submit any location ideas to me and I will work with the board to set up a vote at one of the outdoor summer meetings. Locations should be near major access highways, hold at least 60 members, free room if we eat there and provide wait staff for menu service and be OK with our PA system use. If you have an article for the newsletter please forward to Scott Unger. Jennie Barker is always looking for new pictures and information of recent events for the GPMC website. Got pictures of cruises, events or your car, do not forget to send them in. As always, we would like to hear from you, brand new or long time members on any suggestions for improving Your Club. As always, your Officers and Board would appreciate your ideas and help. We have Club members who are ill or have family members who are so please keep them in your thoughts. Hope to see you June 7th at the GPMC meeting at Baja Grill at Fox Chapel Yacht Club. Before going to meetings, events or cruises, always check the Club Website for changes or inclement weather delay or cancel. Let the Cruising and fun begin, Mark and Charlyn Don t forget, when in doubt, check the Club Website at before going to meetings, events or cruises, for any announcements regarding inclement weather delays or cancelations.

Treasurer's Report: Jason Uhler said that he didn t have much activity. Small amount of deposit from dues, 50/50 and merchandise sales. We had a few expenses: a deposit for the hospitality picnic shelter in Moon and 5 year renewal on our website domain name. It was moved by Charlyn Mulkey and 2nd by Ken Barker to accept the Treasurer s Report as presented. Motion carried. Membership: Darryl Miller stated that 2 new members joined last month with no renewals, which brings us to 130 active memberships. Newsletter: Scott Unger reported that the newsletter deadline is May 15th. He sent an blast to all members with the All-Ford Show flier and information. Please send any newsletter content for Scott to add to the monthly newsletter. He will be adding the CanAm sign-up sheets to this month s newsletter. Merchandise: Barb Pifer has a lot of merchandise on hand for sale, along with the Mustang Day 2017 stickers for $1 each. Please contact Barb at merchandise@gpmc.org for any items you are interested in ordering. Webmaster: Jennie Barker mentioned that there was a question that she had received from someone regarding obtaining history about his 1967 Mustang. If you think you can help, please see the question under the News section of our gpmc.org website. Also check your or website before each event or meeting in case of inclement weather or other reasons we may need to cancel a club event. MCA: Ed Saitz stated that he received a thank you note from Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley. They were the recipient charity organization that benefitted from our All Ford Show The June 11, 2017 All Ford Show will be located at the new Shults Ford location on Gulf Lab Road in Harmarville. Ed passed around signup sheets for judging cars at the show. There was also a signup sheet for those that would like to donate a basket for the basket raffle we have at the show. Please let Charlyn Mulkey know if you would like to donate one. Our food vendor for the show will again be Little Athens. If you are planning on showing your car, you must pre-register for All Ford Show. This helps to cut down on traffic at the registration area. Please make sure you class your car in J, K or L which are members only classes. On a side note, if your car is Ford Powered but not a Ford, it can be entered in the show. Activities/Upcoming Events: Tim Baker was unable to make the meeting but he sent along the following note: Event wrap-up - The Mustang Day Cruise on Monday, April 17 saw nearly 25 cars meet at Pittsburgh Mills and head north through the back roads of Allegheny and Butler Counties for an hour's drive to King Cones Castle in Butler where ice cream treats hit the spot on a warm evening. June 2017 Page 3 of 19

4 Upcoming Events - Spring Stampede - Saturday, May 13, it's been difficult to get this one together, but the route is taking shape. The tour will gather at Panera Bread in Monroeville and head south to the first stop at the Bushy Run Battlefield. After a tour there, it's on to Ohiopyle for a picnic lunch. We will stop briefly in Normalville, PA at a Subway for those who wish to buy a sub on the way. Otherwise, lunch is a Bring Your Own Lunch affair. After lunch, we may be able to head back down to the Ohiopyle Falls area for a brief stop before heading out to visit the Jumonville Cross, then swinging back north to Connellsville to enjoy the model train display that is part of the Fayette County Train Day at a scratch-built model train layout. An has gone out late Tuesday night. Be sure to respond to be included in this spring event. June 2-4, Carlisle Ford Nationals in Carlisle, PA - This is one of the largest annual Ford shows and it takes place just 4 hours from home. Larry Souleret is organizing a group to travel to the show. Check the Member Forum on the GPMC website to coordinate with Larry for the drive. June 11, All-Ford Show at Shults Ford in Harmarville June 16-18, Can-Am weekend. There are two different tours being organized. I need "tour captains" to help keep the group organized during the drives. "Tour captains" will have to become familiar with the routes ahead of time so that when the group gets broken up (at traffic lights, etc.), they can lead our guests back to the full group or to the destination. Please me if you are interested in helping out. Looking ahead - I'm hoping to do another Drive-In movie theater trip this summer. This outing is obviously weather-dependent and will probably be organized with only a week or two advance notice. Possible drivein theaters include the Riverside near Leechburg and the Starlight near Butler. Keep your eye on your inbox! Looking far ahead - The National Mustang Owner's Museum announced that its Grand Opening will be held on the weekends before and after National Mustang Day in I know there are several GPMC members who are Charter Members of the Museum, so I'm looking into making a trip to the first Grand Opening weekend next April. Please note that if you are interested in going to this weekend you must be a charter member of the museum. Those charter memberships are still available via the museum's website. I will be filling in more details for this trip over the next month or two, but I wanted to give everyone a heads-up. Old business: CanAm Weekend (June 16-18) Mary Hutton stated that they need cruise captains for the cruises on Saturday and Sunday morning. Please see Tim Baker if you would like to volunteer. Mary sent around a signup sheet for deserts for Friday night dinner and Jerry Smith sent a signup sheet around for volunteers for Car Cruise for Friday. Mary also has car cruise fliers for the CanAm Cruise for Friday night. Please see her for fliers to pass out. New business: As you know, we lost our regular season meeting location due to the King s Restaurant in Wexford closing. We are looking for ideas for a new location. The location needs to be free of charge, be near a major highway, must be able to accommodate members in a private area. Please contact Mark Mulkey with your suggestions. The board has agreed to again support the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix with purchasing 2 parking spots. A motion was made to spend the $400 for the two parking spots. Ken Barker made the motion and Denny Lane seconded the motion. Motion carried. Also, anyone interested in volunteering at the Vintage Grand Prix, please contact Mark Morrow. If you would like to attend the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix both days, the cost is $40 total. Saturday is the car show and Sunday is the race. Please visit the pvgp.org for more information. This year s club holiday party will be in the West. We need a volunteer to arrange this event. If anyone is interested, please let Mark Mulkey know. Our first summer meeting location is at the Baja Bar & Grill at Fox Chapel Yacht club on Wednesday, June 7th. Meeting location details can be found on the gpmc.org website. Contrary to our typical summer meetings, outside food is not permitted. They do have food and drinks for purchase. The 45th Annual Antique & Classic Car Show at Mar s High School is on Sunday, June 4. Ken Barker made a motion for our club to sponsor a class of 3 trophies for this event at a cost of $25. Ken thought it would be great advertisement for the club at an inexpensive price. The motion was seconded by Dwight Hutton. Motion carried. 50/50 Raffle Rich Harrison was our winner and he donated winnings back to the club. Next meeting: Wed., June 7 at Baja Bar and Grill Fox Chapel Yacht club Adjournment: Motion was made to adjourn meeting by Jennie Barker and 2nd by Bill Rossmann and motion carried at 8:30 pm. 9 The Greater Pittsburgh Mustang Club is proud to host the 2017 CAN-AM Weekend, June 16 18, 2017 Please join us for a weekend of fun, food and friendship with your fellow Mustang club members along with the following Mustang Clubs, The Lake Erie Mustang Owners Club, The Mahoning Valley Mustang Club, The Niagara Classic Mustang Club and Northeastern Ohio Mustang Club. After checking into the hotel, attend a local car cruise and fish fry from 5 to 8 PM. The cruise will be held at The Church of The Resurrection in Monroeville, about 2 miles from the host hotel. There is no charge for this event. Food, such as fish sandwiches, kielbasa and other local ethnic specialties will be available for purchase. Dash plaques will be handed out and trophies awarded. After the cruise, return to the hotel for the traditional Just Desserts evening with clubmates. Following breakfast at the hotel, we will depart early morning for an all-day cruise to areas east of Pittsburgh. Plans include stops in Altoona and Johnstown. We will eat together at a local restaurant along the way. Cost for lunch and optional small admission fees will be paid by attendees. Following a social hour (cash bar), the banquet will be held at the host hotel. Entertainment will be a participatory Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. Sure to be a lot of fun! After breakfast at the hotel, we will depart early morning for a short cruise through the Pittsburgh city environs. The cruise will wind up mid-morning at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. We have arranged for group admission and a picnic luncheon at one of the zoo s pavilions. Following the luncheon, you are free to remain at the zoo for the remainder of the day or leave at any time. Park: Moon Township Park And now for the News Hello GPMC Members, I want to thank everyone who came out on Saturday, May 13, and helped make the Spring Stampede a success. A total of 19 Mustangs (and one white Expedition) made their way to Bushy Run Battlefield to learn about how the military tactics used there are still studied today. After a brief tour of the battlefield and a musket demonstration, it was back in the cars to drive through Greensburg, then south through rural areas in Westmoreland and Fayette Counties. There was a little snafu with the picnic area, but thanks to Darrell & Terry Miller, Tom & Joanne Horner, and Ken & Jennie Barker for going on while the rest of us picked up lunch and figuring it out so the rest of us didn't have to make the drive to disappointment. And thanks to those for being good sports about it! Kudos to everyone for embracing the spirit of adventure! We then drove past the Jumonville Cross on our way to the Connellsville Canteen and the scratch-built model train display to end the day. Thanks again to everyone who participated! June is shaping up to be a busy Mustang month with club events as well as nearby national events to keep us busy. Here's a listing: June 1-4, Carlisle Ford Nationals, Carlisle, PA - This massive show includes a car showfield, a large vendor area, and an even larger swap meet area. It's only a 3 hour or so drive from the Pittsburgh area, so some members have made it a day trip in the past. There are several members, including me, who will have their cars on display at the show, so if you go be sure to look for us! Check the member forum area on the website to see if anyone wants to caravan with you if you're heading out! June 11, rd Anniversary All Ford-Powered Show at the new Shults Ford location in Harmarville. See the website to pre-register for the event. Don't forget to sign up to help with during the show--parking cars, working the raffle booth, show prep, and tear-down are all needed. June 16-18, The 2017 Can-Am Weekend will be hosted here in Monroeville by GPMC, with Mary Hutton chairing the event. Her team is finalizing the details for a fun-filled weekend including a car show and fish fry on Fridaynight, a tour to Altoona and Johnstown on Saturday morning followed by a Murder Mystery Dinner that night, and a Sunday drive to the Pittsburgh Zoo. The registration form for Can-Am is also on the website. I'm thinking of having a Drive-In Theater outing on Saturday, June 24 if there's interest. Let me know if you'd be interested. The movies tentatively would be Cars 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 3. The night would probably include a short drive followed by the drive-in theater, likely the Riverside near Leechburg--it's the only one that has its movie schedule posted already! And finally, GPMC will again be participating in the Leetsdale 4th of July parade. The parade organizes at 1pm and kicks off at 2pm. on July 4. It's a fun time, but you probably should plan to bring a LOT of candy as they love it when you throw it. I'll start a sign-up next month for this event. That's a lot of stuff! Everyone have an enjoyable Memorial Day and I hope to see you at some or ALL of the above events! June 2017 Page 11 of 19

13 Rally Appalachia 2 Three teams with ties to GPMC are preparing for this summer's Rally Appalachia 2, a charity rally organized by Rally North America. This year's designated charity for the rally is Hope for the Warriors, a charity that provides services and help for our most recent military veterans and their families. The rally route for 2017 begins in Christiansburg, VA with Day 1 activities including a special tour of historic Martinsville Speedway, the oldest NASCAR track on the Monster Energy Drink Cup Series and laps at Virginia International Raceway, where teams will spend the night in trackside accommodations. Day 2 departs from VIR and cuts through the Blue Ridge Mountains, ending in Waynesville, NC. After another overnight stay, teams will head on to Rome, GA in a route that promises "no interstates". As a bonus day, teams will make a round trip journey to Talladega Super Speedway, NASCAR's largest oval track, to make some paced laps before returning to Rome, GA for the rally awards ceremony. GPMC teams in the rally are listed below with links to their donation page, for those who would like to make a donation. Reminder: donations go directly to the charity; teams pay their own expenses.
