5 GPMC NEWS June 2010 Page 5 MEMBER PROFILE: CHERYL & JIM BAKAJ Jim and I have been GPMC members since July of Looking for a local cruise to attend, I saw the Hospitality Picnic listed on and saw it was open to all Mustangs regardless of year. At the time we had a 2000 V6 Mustang, Laser Red. We attended the picnic at North Park (local for us) and found that it was also Can-Am Weekend, so there were tons of Mustangs there, and the people were all very welcoming. Our first Mustang was a 1969 coupe, with a black vinyl roof.remember those? The car was Competition Orange. Jim bought the car in 71 when I was 16, and I learned to drive in that car. (It was an automatic I still can t drive a stick!) We kept her till 1979 when our second child came along; it was too hard carting two young kids and all their paraphernalia around in a Mustang. Traded her on a station wagon.groan! Fast forward to Fall 1999 the new Mustang body style had just come out, and we couldn t resist any longer. The 00 was my daily driver for the next 8 years. But we kept the car in show condition, and attended many cruises & events with it. But being in a club surrounded by GT s & Cobras, Jim yearned for more power arrrr, arrrr. So when he saw the 2003 Mach 1 at the car show, the search was on. In March of 03 we found his Azure Blue R-code V8 Mach 1. He has added a 281 hood stripe, and upgraded the exhaust with a Magnaflow X-pipe and Borla catbacks for a throatier sound than the stock exhaust system had. In the meantime, our kids started having kids of their own, and I quit my job to babysit. Try getting one of those infant carriers into the back seat of a Mustang, with a growing baby in it my back was killing me! So once again, we traded the 00 pony on a granny-mobile. ( 08 Pontiac Vibe.) But kids grow fast, and soon they were climbing into the car by themselves, and one even buckles herself up in her carseat. Jim s work vehicle, a 1998 Ford Escort, was starting to show her age, so Jim graciously offered to take the Vibe, and we traded the Escort in on my new daily driver: a 2010 V6 coupe Candy Red Metallic! I probably look a little loony getting two toddlers into their carseats in the back seat of a sporty red pony, but I don t care, and the kids call it Meemee s race car! Since joining the club, Jim and I have volunteered at many events, and I ve been Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, and now just plain old Director-at-large. The club is lots of fun if everyone puts forth a little effort now & then. What s next? We re thinking maybe a classic 60 s-era Mustang. I think it should be white, since we ve already got the red and the blue. :-D
