4 Girls Golf Junior Varsity and Varsity (additional developmental squad) No cut as long as numbers are manageable. There is a place for every girl who has some basic skill level and a passion to be involved. Some experience is needed along with having golf equipment. We are not teaching golf so can t really take players until they have at least had some basic instruction and exposure. Drills and assistance from professionals are provided at organized practices but the practices are not golf lessons. Timing of Tryouts: Practices (tryouts for the purpose of initial leveling) start about a week before school starts in the fall as the season starts right when school does. Often we have a meeting or event of some kind in mid-summer for interested incoming freshmen. Please contact us right after 8th grade promotion to be notified of optional activities over summer and desire to be on the team in fall. We do not cut anyone who has basic skills but selections for the varsity or JV teams are dependent upon skill level. Other developmental players may be full program members and practice and play within the team but not play in competitive matches against other schools until they are sufficiently experienced. Exact play opportunities and team assignments (varsity, JV, developmental) may not be determined until after the first few weeks of school but preliminary input is provided to all new players relatively quickly after joining the team. Girls Golf is now available year around while the competitive season is only during the first semester girls may opt to continue in the Golf PE class in the second semester as well Girls who play other sports the first semester may still apply to join the golf class only for the second semester. Therefore, between 12 and 18 kids will be selected each weekend to compete; some kids may not compete in tournaments. Cut The audition process consists of a two day clinic, with one final audition. After the final audition day, participants will be notified via if they have made the team or not. There is only one audition per year. Prospective members shall be selected on the basis of dance ability, technique, rhythm and coordination, precision and memory, poise/personal presentation and showmanship. Dance technique background is a must. Dance Team is a year round sport. It starts in September and ends in late April/early May. Victoria Brown - miracostadanceteam@gmail.com Summer practices are mandatory, they start in July and end mid- August. Dance team also attends dance camp early August. During summer practices, team members will learn material for the year including sidelines, halftime and even some competition material. Participants will receive PE credit. It is recommended that vacations should be taken in June and or late August. Patti Duong miracostadanceboosters@gmail.com The primary purpose of the MCHS Dance Team is to provide support and entertainment to athletic programs at Mira Costa High as well as compete and develop strong performance and dance technique. MCHS Dance Team acts as a performance based team representing Mira Costa High School. We perform at school athletic events, local regional and national competitions and community events. These events are mandatory. The MCHS Dance Team takes pride in its role as ambassadors of MCHS and the Manhattan Beach community. Like any athletic team, we strive to be strong, competitive, versatile dancers and performers. MCHS Dance Team works towards the common goal To be the best dancers we can be through hard work, dedication and team work. We strive to continue a tradition of excellence.
32 Cut/No cut: Prior Experience: Off Season Workouts: Varsity Coach: Booster Club Contact: Unique to Surf Team: Surf Team Cut Students interested in trying out for the surf team must sign up for surf P.E. for the fall semester. Surf P.E. and Surf Team are held during zero and first periods at 26th Street in Manhattan Beach, with students ready to surf at 6:30 a.m. Students are expected to arrive at school on time for second period every day. Tryouts (competitive surfing heats) are held during class prior to the season start in October. During the school year, Surf Team meets every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with Friday being an optional/make-up day. Prior surfing experience is needed to be chosen for the Team, however prior competitive surfing experience is not. It is suggested Middle Schoolers take Surf P.E. at MBMS. Surf Meet season runs from September through March. There are two or three weekend meets, but most competition is held before school between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. at beaches from Torrance to El Porto. National Championships are in June. Surf Team meets during the Spring Semester as well. Students who choose to participate in a different sport during the spring may miss a number of Surf Meets. Students are encouraged to surf on their own on the weekends and during the rest of the year. Tracy Geller; tgeller@mbusd.org None None Laura Hodges, lauralarkinhodges@gmail.com Surf Team is a unique sport at Mira Costa for many reasons. The biggest difference from other sports is that it meets in the morning and most competition is held before school rather than after school. Surf Team is held during zero and first periods, and academic schedules begin at second period. Another unique attribute of Surf Team is that it is coed! Girls and guys compete at meets in separate divisions, but practice together. Competition takes place on short boards, long boards and body boards, with some surfers competing in more than one division.
