We are certain you are already experiencing the excitement that is building for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Our entire staff is busily engaged in the final preparations to make this competition a rewarding and exciting experience. The Barbizon Model & Talent Competition is one of the leading opportunities for discovery in the modeling and talent industry today. Your participation in this event will not only be fun and exciting, but it could also open doors to your future. You will showcase your modeling and acting potential in front of a panel of judges. 2 At the Barbizon Competition, we will be awarding 132 prizes to our top competitors, including a TRIP to the Passport To Discovery Competition Cruise! A partial scholarship will be awarded to each division winner and each 1 st winner-up to compete at Passport to Discovery this October. The 2 nd winner-up from each division will receive a FULL PHOTO SHOOT (hair, makeup, and styling included)! Additionally, all competitors will have the opportunity to be seen and evaluated for possible representation by the most esteemed panel of judges in our competition s history! 3 Weekend of Events The 18th Annual Barbizon Capitol Competition will be held Sunday, July 8, 2018 at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria, VA. OPTIONAL WORKSHOPS SATURDAY, JULY 7, 2018 To prepare you for the format of the Barbizon Competition, comprehensive workshops have been set for: o Saturday, July 7, 2018 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. o Location: Hilton Alexandria Mark Center (map & directions on pages 11-12). The workshops will concentrate on competition runway, television commercials, and agency etiquette, as well as what to expect on the Convention Day. Please bring high heels for the runway workshop. Remember - please bring high heels you are comfortable walking in. Do not let the competition day be the first time you are wearing your runway shoes! o Dress casual and bring a notebook and pen to take notes. Be sure to pack a light lunch and bottled water, as we will not be taking a scheduled lunch break. o Be sure to attend the Convention Day Workshop to receive approximate competition call times. Workshops are completely optional, but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Parents are also encouraged to attend. o There is a special workshop specifically for parents about the "Business of the Business with a Q&A session with a panel of VIPs. Workshops are included in your registration; no additional fees are required to attend. Workshop schedules will be distributed the morning of the workshops. COMPETITION DAY SUNDAY, JULY 8, :45 a.m.: Contestant Drop-Off Be sure to bring everything that you will need for the day, including lunch. 8 a.m.: Report to Ballroom - Be Prompt! This is when you will receive your contestant badge! (CONTESTANTS ONLY) 8:30-9:00 a.m.: Orientation (CONTESTANTS ONLY) 9-10:30 a.m.: Rehearsal (CONTESTANTS ONLY) 10:30-11:00 a.m.: Break Time & Prep NOTE: We strongly recommend leaving personal valuables at home. Lunch will cost you approximately $10-$15 at the hotel or you can bring your own lunch and snacks. Don t forget to bring a few bottles of water. Arrive to rehearsal in casual attire with your hair and makeup already done. Remember to wear your runway shoes to rehearsal! 3
4 HOW IT WORKS. Every contestant will participate in the Runway and TV Commercial competitions TV COMMERCIAL: Contestants will appear at the top of the runway and be shown on a LARGE video screen framed from the shoulders up. Your commercial is your opportunity to show off your creativity and personality! You can create your own commercial or take one right from television. Remember, it can only be 15 seconds long with NO PROPS or PROP PLACEMENT (i.e. acting like you re holding a cell phone). Be sure to choose age appropriate material. Original, fun & funny scripts ALWAYS score well. Don t be afraid to make up your product and invent a great TV commercial! Singing is not recommended for TV commercials. TV commercials. RUNWAY: Contestants will walk the runway in one outfit as the MC announces the contestant number, in front of a panel of agents. No turns or pivots on runway; contestants will pose at the end of the runway then continue back to top of T before exiting. Once each contestant has walked the runway, all contestants within that division will walk in parade style for Overview, one final look by the judges. Judging & Prizes A total of 132 WINNERS will receive an award symbolizing their participation in the competition. In addition, $12,000 in scholarship money to Passport To Discovery will be divided amongst the two highest point scorers. $32,000 in scholarship money to Passport To Discovery will be divided amongst the 10 division winners. $19,000 in scholarship money will be divided amongst the 10 1st winner-ups. Each of the 10 2nd winner-ups will receive a FULL PHOTOSHOOT session with an acclaimed photographer. 4
5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW DIVISION LEADERS WILL BE PRESENT TO GUIDE YOU THROUGHOUT THE DAY OF COMPETITIONS. BRING EVERYTHING YOU WILL NEED FOR THE DAY TO REHEARSAL! BRING YOUR LUNCH AND SNACKS, OR MONEY TO PURCHASE FOOD. PARENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE DRESSING ROOMS UNLESS THEIR CHILD IS 12 YEARS OLD OR YOUNGER. IF YOU PLAN TO DO YOUR OWN HAIR & MAEKUP, IT SHOULD BE DONE WHEN YOU ARRIVE TO REHEARSAL AS YOU WILL ONLY HAVE TIME FOR TOUCH-UPS. MAKEUP SHOULD LOOK CLEAN AND POLISHED. NO WHITE EYELINER OR BRING BARBIE LIPSTICK. SIMPLICITY IS BEST FOR THIS COMPETITION. PARENTS: VIDEO CAMERAS ARE PERMITTED AS WELL AS REGULAR CAMERAS. THERE WILL BE PROFESSIONAL DVD S FOR SALE. SEE THE PROMO FORM ON PAGE 14 FOR ORDERING INFORMATION. YOUR CONTESTANT NUMBER WILL BE ED TO YOU THE WEEK BEFORE THE COMPETITION. HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS SPECIAL HOTEL ACOOMODATIONS FOR BARBIZON CONTESTANTS ONLY!!!! We recommend making reservations at the official competition hotel should you not be within driving distance of the competition. The Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria, VA is the venue for the competition and where all the agents and staff will be staying. Barbizon USA has negotiated a discounted rate starting at $ per night for Barbizon contestants and their families. Self-parking has been reduced to $10 for daily and overnight parking. The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Individual families are responsible for making their own reservations and payment arrangements directly with the hotel. Please book your room soon, as the block fills up very quickly. The hotel has a cut-off date of Friday, June 15 th to get your room at the discounted rate. If you book your room after that date, you are subject to a rate increase. All charges are your responsibility. 5
6 WARDROBE GUIDELINES There will be two outfits needed for this competition. Your outfits should be upscale and casual in nature. Don t bring any formal or business attire. Your outfits should be AGE APPROPRIATE. Please don t stress or worry about your clothing. As long as you follow these guidelines, you will be fine. This is not a fashion show, and you are not being judged or evaluated on your clothing. You are, however, being evaluated on how you present yourself and your model potential (overall image). TV COMMERCIAL Tops should be VIBRANT in color! Solids only! o No prints or patterns Skin covered! No tank/tube tops or halters, etc. o Short sleeves, ¾ sleeves, long sleeves, and jackets are all acceptable Feel free to war any type of bottom o Jeans, skirts, leggings, shorts, crop pants, etc. are all acceptable in any color Shoes should be flat! No high heels! Hair & Makeup Guidelines If you re doing your own hair & makeup, please follow these simple guidelines: - - For TV commercial, wear your hair pulled back AWAY from your face. Headbands are acceptable. Your makeup should be very simple and natural. For Runway, you have the freedom to wear more fun and dramatic looks with your hair and makeup. Keep in mind that natural is always best! 6
7 RUNWAY Any style f fashionable outfit must be ALL Black ONLY! NO FORMAL ATTIRE! Shoes may be any kind you wish. Choose a pair you can walk well in and goes with your overall look. Sneakers, heels, boots, sandals, etc. are all acceptable, but they should be b lack or neutral shoes.. Belts and headbands are acceptable ; however, no jewelry is permitted. Be sure to remove all facial piercings. 7
8 PHOTO FORMS You will need to bring photos of yourself to the competition affixed to the photo form found as a separate attachment in this . These forms will be given to the agents/managers that have expressed interest in you during call-backs. Please do not bring photos with any filters. The best photos are not posed, have very little makeup and are only YOU. Please don t bring pictures with other people or pets in them. You need to bring at least 25 photo forms with you the day of the competition. Please do not fax/mail/ them to the Barbizon office. Please see the EXAMPLE PHOTO FORM below for an example of how your photo forms should look. The contact information listed on photo forms should be the parent s contact info. You will need to provide your current measurements on your photo form only if you wear adult-size clothing. Use a soft tape measure to take your measurements in inches. 18 th Annual Barbizon Capitol Competition Alexandria, VA July 2018 FEMALE MEASUREMENTS: BUST: measures the circumference of your bust. (This is NOT your bra size!) WAIST: measure the circumference of your waist, which is located above your belly button and below your rib cage. (If you bend to the side, the crease that forms is your natural waistline.) HIPS: measure the circumference of your hips, which is around the largest part of your bottom. CHEST : SUIT : MALE REQUIREMENTS: CHEST: measure r around the fullest part of your chest, under your armpits. (measurement SUIT: is the number refers to your chest size (measurement is explained above), and Short, Regular, or WAIST: Long refers to the length of the jacket. WAIST: measure the smallest part of your INSEAM: waist, above your belly button. INSEAM: measure the inside of your leg from just below your crotch to your ankle. It is wise to take advantage of the.doc format the photo form is sent in, organize your layout in Microsoft Word with photos attached, and then print 25 copies. You can also attach two photos and fill out information on one form, and then create 25 copies on a copy machine. There are many ways to create your forms; do what works best for you! 8
9 How prepared are you to meet with agents? Quality photos is how you ll get noticed! If you ve invested time into thinking about your commercial and put thought into what you ll wear for the weekend, then don t forget to CONSIDER your photographs! Do they really capture you, your personality, and your features in the best possible way? REMEMBER, GREAT PHOTOS EQUATE TO CONTRACTS/OFFER! 10 SINGERS & DANCERS We are pleased to announce that we will be showcasing singers and dancers at the Barbizon Competition! Requirements include a one minute or less submission. It can be recorded in your bedroom, living room or anywhere quiet. Upload your video to or (Make sure that your settings allow you to share your video and that it is not marked as private.) the link to: lizlbarbizon@gmail.com. You will receive a reply via letting you know whether or not you have been selected to perform in the preliminaries. Please do not call or about your results until you have been contacted directly. If you have been selected to perform in the preliminaries, you will do so on Saturday, July 7th directly following the workshops at 4:15 p.m. This can be in costume if you choose. You will perform a one-minute solo piece in front a panel of judges. Parents are permitted to attend. You will be required to submit your musical accompaniment via by Friday, May 18, The talent winner will be notified on Sunday morning during rehearsal and will perform live on stage at some point during the competition in front of the entire audience. Please make sure you have your costume with you the weekend of the competition. There is an additional fee of $125 to participate in the preliminaries. Auditioning/submitting a video is absolutely free and if you are selected, you are not required to compete in the preliminaries. The deadline for video submissions is Friday, May 18, CALLING ALL ACTORS! A select group of agents, managers, and casting directors have requested to see more from our actors and actresses! For those who are serious about acting, there are three OPTIONAL competitions to showcase more of your acting ability: Monologue, Improv, and Stand-Up Comic. If you choose to participate in Monologue, you will showcase your 30-second memorized monologue. Improv contestants will be provided a scenario to improvise with a scene partner for 30 seconds. Stand-Up Comic participants will perform an original two-minute comedy set. (Stand-Up Comic contestants must submit a video of their set by Friday, May 18th to qualify. No video submission necessary for Monolgue or Improv.) Contestants must be available to perform on Saturday afternoon, July 7th to participate in either event. The top five highest scorers will perform Sunday morning, July 8th, in front of all agents and managers. This is a truly amazing opportunity to get more exposure in front of the agents! The cost to compete in the OPTIONAL Monologue, Improv, or Stand Up Comic competition is $85 each and must be completed prior to June 1st to ensure you are on the roster.
