9 Synchro scoring In case you ve been wondering how a score is determined, here are some notes taken from the CASSA Rulebook updated November 2010 with revisions on January 6, 2011, available on the Synchro Canada website, synchro.ca. There s more to it than this; trust me, the official scorer uses a computer. 1. Figures The order of performance is drawn at random. (a) The highest and lowest marks are eliminated. (b) The remaining marks are added and averaged, and the result is multiplied by the degree of difficulty assigned to the figure. (c) The sum of the four figures performed is divided by the total of the degree of difficulty of the group and multiplied by 10, and then any penalties are deducted. This result is multiplied by 50%. 2. Routines For the free routine and free combination routines each judge awards three marks from 0 to 10 points each (e.g. 9.4, 8.2.). Technical merit judges award marks for execution, synchronization, and difficulty. Artistic impression judges award marks for choreography, music interpretation, and manner of presentation. In technical routines judges give a mark for execution and a mark for overall impression. However, only the routine and championship scores are announced. For each of the six components of the free routine (technical merit: execution, synchronization, and difficulty; artistic impression: choreography, music interpretation, and manner of presentation), the highest and lowest mark (one each) for each set of components is cancelled. The remaining marks are added, divided the sum by the number of judges less two. The result is multiplied by the factors in CASSA rulebook section 7.4.4(b) for technical merit and artistic impression to get the component score. The technical merit score is the sum of the execution, synchronization, and difficulty scores. The artistic impression score is the sum of the choreography, music interpretation, and manner of presentation scores. The free routine score is the sum of 50% of the technical merit score and 50% of the artistic impression score, less any penalty deductions. In technical routines one highest and one lowest mark is eliminated from each group of marks, and then for each group the remaining marks are added and averaged and the result multiplied by five. The marks are then added to obtain the routine score. Applicable penalties and deductions are subtracted to obtain the routine adjusted score. Ranking Routines Competitors are ranked twice, for purposes of awards. 1) The routine score is the routine adjusted score. 2) The championship score is based on 50% routine and 50% figures. For Senior FINA events the championship score is based on 50% technical routine and 50% free routine. For free combination the championship score is based on 100% routine score.
